Alexander-Arnold v Robertson: Who is the best Liverpool FPL defender?

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) or Andrew Robertson (£7.0m): who makes your Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squad in Gameweek 1?

Alexander-Arnold was the top-scoring defender in 2021/22, with 208 points placing him third in the overall player standings. However, since the turn of the year, Robertson outscored his team-mate by a whopping 37 points and is also available for half a million less.

Is Alexander-Arnold a no-brainer, then? Can Robertson compete with his fellow full-back? And is double Liverpool defence worth considering?

In this, our latest Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members article, we’ll attempt to answer those questions.

ALEXANDER-ARNOLD v ROBERTSON: FPL RETURNS 2021/22

Salah's role one to monitor in FPL as Alexander-Arnold continues forays infield 2

Across the course of 2021/22, Alexander-Arnold finished 22 points ahead of his Scottish colleague, producing eight double-digit hauls, two goals, 12 assists, 18 clean sheets and 32 bonus points.

Meanwhile, Robertson racked up 186 points, courtesy of six double-digit hauls, three goals, 11 assists, 17 clean sheets and 23 bonus points.

Robertson mustered 6.4 points per match as he appeared in 32 Premier League fixtures, while Alexander-Arnold produced 6.5 points per match across 34 outings.

Robertson’s second double-digit haul arrived in Gameweek 22, when Alexander-Arnold already had six to his name, which drives home the fact that the Scotsman was the more viable Fantasy asset to own in the second half of 2021/22. Indeed, Robertson only blanked in three of his last 21 starts in a run that went all the way back to Gameweek 13.

However, an advantage for Alexander-Arnold appears once we start looking at the underlying statistics.

ALEXANDER-ARNOLD v ROBERTSON: ASSIST POTENTIAL

In-form Robertson an appealing FPL differential for Gameweek 23 and beyond

Alexander-Arnold grabbed 12 assists in 2021/22 and retains his title as the most creative Liverpool asset, leading the way among teammates for chances created (90) and big chances created (18).

And he could arguably have had more: his expected assists (xA) tally was 13.01, one higher than the actual assist total he ended up with.

Unsurprisingly, his overall xA figure was by far the best in the Premier League last season:

While Alexander-Arnold registered an impressive 12 assists in 2021/22, Robertson came very close to his colleague, posting a total of 11.

However, Robertson trails Alexander-Arnold by a considerable margin when we look at chances created (55), big chances created (nine) and xA (5.52).

Even from Gameweek 13 onwards – the start of Robertson’s fine run of form – Alexander-Arnold created 2.55 chances per 90 minutes, compared to the left-backs 2.14, while he was also ahead for big chances created per 90 minutes (0.45 to 0.39) and xA per 90 minutes (0.37 to 0.22).

    Honestly I think I'm done. I'm gonna set this as my dead team till the blanks and doubles. Will only change captaincy.

    Henderson
    TAA Robbo Cancelo James Perisic
    Salah Kulu Pereira
    Haaland Jesus

        I meant I just don't see how I can improve on this by making transfers. I'll end up losing points more likely.

    Don't take it too seriously.... but here's how many goals Arsenal attackers will score based on responses on the last two pages (very approximate, obvs).

    Jesus = 13.9
    Martinelli = 9.8
    Nketiah = 7.1
    Saka = 7.0
    ESR = 5.8

    Assists are not included, of course, but it looks like more reason to avoid Saka, given his price.

    I didn't include my own thoughts in the calculation, but there there are:

    ESR and Nketiah could double their predictions here, making them viable, even if the majority of their mins come off the bench (which could even be through 45-minute 'cameos', which I expect Arteta will facilitate on occasion).

    With Nketiah being more expensive (and him being scored as a forward), I would prefer ESR at this point. But, of course, this is only based on my belief that he will contribute more to goals than the majority of people think.

    Martinelli is still the better option at 6.0, based on current information/expectations, but ESR could still be better value than others at that price or lower. It's a bet I'm currently planning to place.

    I'll certainly be keen to jump on any of the cheaper Arsenal attackers if something changes to give them more minutes. Personally, wouldn't use a spot on their defenders during good fixture runs, for that reason. Perhaps rotate a defender when the fixtures are more mixed.

        I guess we can add 10 goals to that from defenders/defensive midfielders.

          Well 54 is about on par with Villa last year so I still think its at least 10 shy

            12 from defenders and DMs last season (incl Xhaka)

            7 from Odegaard

            47 from front 3 (=77%)

            1. Deulofail
              • 8 Years

              Correction. I think 41 from front 3 (=67%)

              But then I'm still missing a goal, and I can't be arsed to find it

      2. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        1 year, 10 months ago

        Yes, I suspect this is true. I mean, the second part 😀

        Let's say Arsenal score more goals (which I personally predict). So from 61 last season to 76 this new season (same as Chelsea last season). And let's say that 70% goals come from the front 4.

        That's 53 goals rather than 44 from this group (excluding any incomings and fringe players (and Vieira as a winger). That would put the figures more like:

        Jesus = 16.7
        Martinelli = 11.8
        Nketiah = 8.6
        Saka = 8.4
        ESR = 7.0

        So I would say there's potentially good points available here. And especially good value, given the prices

        I think he'll increase his goal and assist output, but if I had to bet, I wouldn't bet against ESR scoring more goals than him again. So, I'd put him at the bottom of this group for goals.

            Might play more as 8 than 10 if going 433, and get rotated with Vieira more? Maybe its on the low side though. 5 or so wouldn't surprise me

    Mendy, 4.0
    TAA, Cancelo, Perisic, Trippier, Tomiyasu
    Salah, Diaz, ASM, Neto, Andreas
    Haaland, Jesus, Greenwood

    Current thinking is:
    - Chelsea defence might be a bit sketchy without replacement CBs
    - Newcastle getting overlooked defensively

    Let me know!

      Agree with your thinking. Might get a little FOMO wih James/Chilwell as they're great FPL assets & have good fixtures but I'm really not sure what to expect from Chelsea at the moment - if anything probably quite a drop off in CS. And will they go 4 at the back? Newcastle look good value to me & the fixtures around City/Liv/WH are prime CS games.

      I like it. I Agree with you regarding the Chelsea defence. That and the fact that other premium defenders have better early fixtures imo (Liv, City & Spurs) means that I too am considering going without James/Chilwell at the start.

    Mendy
    TAA - Cancelo - Digne - Tomiy
    Salah - Mount - Diaz - Martinelli
    Haaland - Toney

    All fodder bench w/ 0.5m ITB

    TAA + Toney > Robbo + Jesus (0.0 ITB + ARS triple up)?

        Good opening fixtures. Will likely swap him out by GW5 for a bandwagon.

        My only worry about Kulu is Richarlison taking some of his minutes - good pick though.

        Also tempted to do Mount + 4.0 def > Bruno G + Chilwell

    Max 16.5m to fill in the gaps:

    _____ | 4.0 Keeper
    Trent | Cancelo | Doherty | Tomiyasu | N.Williams
    Salah | Son | Martinelli | _____ | Pereira
    Haaland | _____ | Greenwood

    Who would you opt for?

    A) 4.5 Keeper | Gordon/Neto | Mitrovic

    B) Mendy | Gordon/Neto | Johnson/Solanke

    C) Mendy | 5.0 mid | Mitrovic

    D) 4.5 Keeper | Bruno G | Johnson/Solanke

    4.0 Andreas Neco 4.5

    Kane can become Haaland, Bruno G to Neto etc

        Yeah question marks. Coutinho will play more often than not. I think Gerrard will play two attacking mids, with one upfront. Ings the makeweight.

      Isn't Mahrez a better should than Foden just because of Grealish being better than the other options on the right? Or am I underrating Alvarez?

    Thoughts on game time for Haaland over the season? Granted, he has been brought in for a specific job but if anyone is going to tinker and play around with the line up etc it’s pep.

    Another busy season ahead for city, plus the extra substitute and it also remains to be seen how he will integrate Haaland. Many of us were expecting Foden to see more game time when Silva left as I recall.

    Point is with Liverpool and Spurs there is more certainty around their premium assets even with the arrival of Nunez and Richarlison.

    Just think with city it’s better to stick with the defs or KDB if he stays fit and prepare to jump on if someone like gundo goes on a run…

      I agree but they've sold Sterling and Jesus so Pep doesn't have as many options up front now.

      I consider Diaz more or a minutes risk than Haaland, but I’ll be starting with both

      Alvarez lurking too. I think he will play a lot to begin with but Alvarez will impress and eat into minutes.

      Has a similar vibe to Jesus when he ousted Aguero for a bit, but then again Haaland was bought specifically by Pep.

      For me, the best thing to do is include him and then adjust if necessary. You can get any striker in as a replacement.

        He'll start the majority of games and probably steamroll opposition most weeks imo.

      So, here goes the first draft, thoughts? Is big at the back still frowned upon? Rotating between 541/451

      Mendy
      Taa, Cancelo, Robertson, Perisic, Trippier
      Salah, Mahrez, Courinho, Martinelli
      Haaland

      4m, Pereira, Greenwood, Taylor

        Thats basically 541, right? Pereira just covering for Trippier in GW3 & 5?

        Looks pretty good. My main issues with 5atb are lack of flexibility in midfield - not a problem here as you can move the Mahrez & Coutinho spots around - and 4.5m def being better sub than 4.5m mid - but if Andreas is nailed as 10 he should do a decent job for you as 1st sub

        I’d be tempted to go for a 4.5 and hope a starting one appears and use the 1m elsewhere. The options aren’t great. You could go with someone like Rice at 5 but he ain’t gonna do much for you beyond the 2 points…

      I've just set up a new phone and the links to this website and to FPL that were fine before aren't working. When I go into Play Store I can't find them to instal or open either.

        If you restored from a backup then that often fails. Just try setting up the link again and make sure the OS is up to date. If that doesn’t work try a different browser and if still in trouble then could mean the device is the issue. They’re only websites so should work unless there is some security setting…

      Based on other years where I have tried to be too different and clever. I decided to just pick a team that is balanced and looks good for gw1. With one decent sub.

      It will be slightly different to the popular 5-3-2. It is 4-3-3 focusing on teams against the promoted sides. Or simply sides who struggled last season.

      Raya (4.0)
      Digne-Robertson-TAA-Perisic (Tomiasyu)
      Neto-Salah-Saka
      Wilson-Kane-Watkins

      I feel it allows simple flexibility without being very shoehorned into one formation going forward.

            Funny you say that for some reason I assumed Coutinho was 8m then got him in for Saka. Suddenly I was looking at keeper options Mendy/Ramsdale even Ederson. Mendy seems best value of top defences for me. But then Raya likely to get save points.
