FPL Gameweek 2 review: Williams’ threat and why Chilwell didn’t start

Having already brought you the statistical summary of Sunday’s Gameweek 2 action, we now turn our attention to the wider Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the day’s fixtures.

The numbers and heatmaps you see in this article are from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

CHELSEA 2-2 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

In a fiery encounter, Tottenham Hotspur twice came from behind to earn a point at Stamford Bridge, thanks to a stoppage-time equaliser from Harry Kane (£11.4m).

The England international went into Gameweek 2 having been sold by over 800,000 FPL managers, but ended up outscoring Erling Haaland (£11.6m) by three points, despite facing the tougher fixture.

Kane headed in from substitute Ivan Perisic’s (£5.4m) corner, one of three shots registered, while midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£5.5m) also found the net with a long-range drive.

Meanwhile, Ryan Sessegnon (£4.5m) made his second successive start at the expense of Perisic but had a tough afternoon and was beaten too easily down his flank in the first-half. As a result, he came off before the hour mark for Richarlison (£8.5m) as Antonio Conte switched to a more attacking 4-4-2 formation. That system change saw Son Heung-min (£12.0m) move into a wider wing role, where he struggled to influence proceedings.

“We are working to try to reduce this gap between us and Chelsea – today was a difficult game and I think that with the ball we could do much better. But at the same time, the speed was good, the personality to stay in the game was good. We conceded two goals – for sure we have to improve, the first goal from a corner, the second goal we had changed the system to play 4-4-2 and then something was wrong positionally and Chelsea exploited this to score.

We have to understand that in every game you have to try to kill the opponent in a sporting way, otherwise the opponent is going to kill you. When we started to understand this, I think we are ready to take another important step. But in only eight months I think we did a lot of steps with these players and I have enjoyed a lot of work with them.

Last season I was really frustrated because in three games we showed zero per cent possibility to get a result against Chelsea. Now we played a game with a different confidence. We still have to improve a lot because there is still a difference between us and them.” – Antonio Conte

For Spurs, they are only two games into the new season but have already won four points from losing positions, and now embark on a kind run of fixtures that sees them sit second on our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 3 to 6.

Chelsea played a back-three system with wing-backs to counteract the pace in the Spurs team, with Reece James (£6.0m) starting out as a right-sided centre-back.

That meant Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.0m) was deployed at right wing-back, from where he would often tuck into the half-space, allowing James and Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) to supply most of the width down that side.

“We go for Reece (James) in the back three to match the speed of Son Heung-min, and Ruben (Loftus-Cheek) played wing-back in pre-season and in many matches last season. You need five to defend the aggressive wing-backs of Tottenham.” – Thomas Tuchel

However, in an eventful afternoon in keeping with the match itself, James was booked but then switched to a wing-back role in the second-half, where he found the net and almost supplied an assist for Kai Havertz (£7.9m).

Elsewhere, Kalidou Koulibaly (£5.5m) scored from one of his three shots in the box, while Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) was preferred at left wing-back, with Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) clearly still not up to speed following injury.

“He is a very intelligent player, he does good choices, very safe on the ball, good by playing through the lines, very calm. I have the feeling he (Cucurella) has a bit more of a feeling for the rhythm and for the intensity of the matches than Ben (Chilwell) for the moment. We keep Chilwell for substitutions because he’s a high speed, intense runner, but after his long injury he lacks a bit of rhythm and feeling for the matches. That’s my belief.” – Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel gave an update on N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) after full-time, who hobbled off late on.

“It seems like a muscle injury, a hamstring. He said he feels it pretty strong, so not good.” – Thomas Tuchel on N’Golo Kante

Chelsea XI: Mendy; James, Thiago Silva, Koulibaly; Loftus-Cheek, Kante (Gallagher 85), Jorginho (Azpilicueta 73), Cucurella; Havertz (Broja 90), Mount, Sterling (Pulisic 84)

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris; Romero, Dier, Davies; Royal (Moura 82), Hojbjerg, Bentancur (Bissouma 79), Sessegnon (Richarlison 57); Kulusevski, Son (Perisic 79), Kane

NOTTINGHAM FOREST 1-0 WEST HAM UNITED

It’s been a busy summer at Nottingham Forest with 15 new signings arriving at the City Ground to date. As a result, no one can be quite sure how long it will take those new arrivals to settle, but on Sunday’s evidence alone, the signs are good.

Eight new recruits were handed starts by Steve Cooper in Gameweek 2, including Taiwo Awoniyi (£5.9m). The former Bundesliga forward was dangerous throughout and opened his Forest account, scoring from close range. He did fade in the second-half but made a real impact during his time on the pitch, with his team-mates always looking to find his runs in behind.

“Taiwo’s (Awoniyi) in because he’s the type of profile of nine that we want for this game. Sam (Surridge) hasn’t done anything wrong, you look at a game plan and think what might be needed the most and it’s the football decision we’ve made.” – Steve Cooper on his decision to start Taiwo Awoniyi over Sam Surridge

“I’m really happy about the goal – it was a dream for me to score and for the team to win. As a striker you just have to be ready for anything around the goal. It’s all about getting ready whether you are starting or coming on from the bench. The win will give more confidence to the team, it will keep us going for the next game. I believe we will have a great season as a team.” – Taiwo Awoniyi

Forest were a real threat going forward, thanks in part to some wonderful wing-play by Neco Williams (£4.0m). Notably, the Welshman was on set-pieces and ended the match with some eye-catching underlying stats, which included four goal attempts, two shots in the box, nine attempted crosses and two created chances. His crossing, especially in the early stages, impressed, while he also registered an Opta-defined ‘big chance’ when his close-range effort was kept out by Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m).

Above: Neco Williams’ passes received heatmap v West Ham United in Gameweek 2

Elsewhere, another new signing Dean Henderson (£4.5m) followed up his seven saves in Gameweek 1 with a massive 14-pointer, courtesy of a penalty save, clean sheet and maximum bonus.

It must be said that the immediate schedule for Forest does look a bit daunting, with a trip to Everton followed by games against Tottenham Hotspur and champions Manchester City. However, from Gameweek 6 onwards, things improve with successive fixtures against Bournemouth, Leeds United and Fulham.

On the injury front, Moussa Niakhate (£4.5m) pulled up with what appeared to be a hamstring problem, and despite trying to carry on was taken off immediately following his return. Cooper also addressed the reason for Jack Colback‘s (£4.5m) absence.

“He’s sick. He has been all week really. We were hoping that he might get through it with a couple of days to go, but he’s still at home. Disappointing for Jack, he’s a big part of our dressing room and what we do here.” – Steve Cooper on Jack Colback

As for West Ham United, they were wasteful in front of goal at the City Ground, with Declan Rice (£5.0m) missing a second-half penalty. The England international has now missed two of the three penalties he’s taken in the Premier League and the last two in a row, so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if someone else steps up next time.

Elsewhere, Pablo Fornals (£5.5m) and Said Benrahma (£6.0m) both hit the woodwork (the latter also saw a goal ruled out for a foul in the build-up), while Michail Antonio (£7.5m) was hooked early again and replaced by new signing Gianluca Scamacca (£7.0m) after 69 minutes.

“We defended really poorly, quite often, and we didn’t do that well enough. It cost us a goal through very poor defending, and gave them a chance. We have to blame ourselves. Maybe we could have scored three or four goals. But it wasn’t to be today.” – David Moyes

Nottingham Forest XI: Henderson; Worrall, Niakhate (Cook 79), McKenna; Williams, Mangala (Cafu 84), O’Brien, Toffolo; Lingard; Johnson, Awoniyi (Surridge 72)

West Ham United XI: Fabianski; Coufal, Zouma, Johnson, Cresswell; Soucek, Rice; Bowen (Cornet 85), Fornals (Lanzini 69), Benrahma; Antonio (Scamacca 69)

Haaland Foden

hadn't checked team news and just turned on start of the game and iI genuinely thought for a lot of the first half that mount had been dropped for the spurs game or had picked up an injury. was astonished to see he was playing ( think it was when he blazed a shot over the bar). so something has definitely shifted in his role if he is involved that little.

Yeah tactics were different. Not so much part of the front 3 but found pockets of space just behind Spurs CMs. Will likely change role again for Leeds

Yeah I'm hoping the game against Leeds will be more open and he will be involved more around the box.

Looked a lot better yesterday (as did Chelsea in general).

He was completely wasted playing on that right hand side - much better when he drifts infield to pick up those pockets.

Are you tempted to upgrade your keeper? I've got the same Leicester duo as well as Bailey and have two FTs so really thinking about upgrading keeper by downgrading Bailey to a 4.5 like Lavia

Has to be a good team before they can be considered to have a good fixture

Leicester's defence isn't good. Actually could be considered whipping boys since the beginning of last season. Leicester might still win by outscoring the opponent. But that defence is bad

Sanchez, on the other hand, plays for a good defence and faces a West Ham attack that still needs to go up a few gears

Both might concede. But I'm playing Sanchez until I sell him. Treating Ward like I treated Foster last season: a good backup if I ever somehow need him off the bench

Exclusive just means they're the ones who got the info out of the club: not an official announcement or a leak from another source

It's a useful signpost to say that you can subscribe to them for future exclusive info

Even if it's an interview with a player about his favourite pizza, it's still an exclusive interview and takes quite the effort to set up, so they'll say it 😀

Bailey and Neto played 1200 minutes between them last season, 13.33 games out of a possible 76, for a combined 2 goals and 4 assists. Both still in over 15% of teams.

Some players are cheap because they’re OOP, or move to a better team after pricing (Cucu), and some players are cheap because they’re naff/crocks/in really poor teams. The FFS echo chamber works both ways. Wolves haven’t been able to buy a goal for 2 seasons and Villa’s record since Gerrard took over is better only then 4 teams in that period. I’m mindblown people are defending the Bailey pick still, don’t get me started on Neto.

Strange picks, but I still went with Bailey. Think it's more about poor 5-7m options rather than echo-chamber comments. They're enablers - pure and simple.

He simply isn't though. He plays well when fit, the opening games of this season being no exception, and he is very likely for long stretches of the season to significantly outperform his 5m price tag. Owners are unlucky that this may happen after we have moved him on.

Ødegaard, Mount, Mahrez, Grealish, Fernandes, Rashford, Sancho, Ronaldo, Anonio have all blanked twice out of two (who knows, Diaz might also) and they cost between a fair bit and a lot more.

For 5m I am more likely to burn a FT than sell him at the moment.

You are not picking a player to play a football match for you. You are picking a player which will get you points in FPL.

Bailey simply is not a good FPL asset.

Andreas is another player which should be on your bench, not in your starting eleven.

4.5 or 4.0 defenders will trounce him.

Check their injury history of the past seasons and you'll understand why they didn't play much and couldn't get back to speed in a few games. It's much more complex than you think it is.

Right - what I'd defend about Bailey is his price. There's still no better option at 5m and below for a midfielder. It was always a bad move to have him in your starting line-up with non-playing benchies, but if you've got a decent starting XI and he's a sub, you're good. If he's called upon, I'm happier with him stepping up than a DaSilva or Reed (I've got Andreas alongside him on my bench).

Aston Villa and, in particular, Bailey were good in pre-season. GW1 that was all history already. What changed and why that happened doesn't matter, the reason for owning Bailey just evaporated. It's only a bad pick if you can read the future, which none of us can. Get rid and move on

Thinking of doing Bailey & Cash > DaSilva & Saliba/Mee/Dunk?

    This would be for a - 4

Yes or No and which Def?

Think Cash to Mee (Brentwood fixtures look very nice) or Dunk looks good too.

Already have 2 ARS so Saliba might be an overkill on ARS players?

    Ramsdale, Ward
    TAA, James, Cancelo, Vestergaard, Perisic
    Martinelli, Kulu, Salah, Sancho, Bailey
    Jesus, Nunez, Greenwood

    Should I :
    1) Sancho > Rodrigo, keep the rest and if will to fit Haaland, I will have to lose Jesus or Nunez
    or
    2) WC to be able to fit Haaland for Greenwood but have to lose Kulu, Ramsdale and Perisic and will have to play Neco, Ward and Neto

Morning Ladies and Gentlemen. 🙂 Always aware of the shortfalls here, goes back to choosing Nunez over a Chelsea defender pre Gw 1 and the x2 4.5 mids.
With Bailey dropping pre deadline this week downgrading to a 4.5 just isn’t really an option as x3 4.5 just isn’t an option is it ❓ and it’s clear the 5.5 options in midfield are pretty dire.
Really want to get James but none of it really fits at all.
    Lining up 5-2-3 for Gw3 which I really don’t like either 🙄 😆

    Ramsdale Walker
    Cancello Walker Trent Perisic Nico
    Bailey Salah Andreas Gilmore Martinelli
    Jesus Haaland Nunez

That's true haha! Still shocked it's so low though - surely even if his other two goals were 0.2 each that means every other shot he's taken has an XG of 0?

Just had a quick look at the stats: he had 5 shots against Southampton. His 2 shots which lead to goals had a combined xG of 1.19. The other 3 shots that he didn't score from had a combined xG of 0.11.

Ah okay, cheers for clearing up! Surprised his first goal was so low! Does that mean the goal and other shots against Wolves only had 0.1 XG combined? Do shots off target/blocked shots count too?

                    • 1 Year

His goal against Wolves only had an xG of 0.04! The 3 shots he had in that game had a combined xG of 0.13.

I don't think those other factors are considered. As far as I'm aware the only things that are considered when calculating xG are the position of the player on the pitch when they take the shot, the shot type (left foot, right foot, header), and the situation (open play, free kick, corner, penalty).

      3. Black Knights
        • 12 Years

Yes that's right. Based on the shots he had in the areas he had them, 1.4 goals would be the expectation. So he's scored more than expected. The header on the line vs Saints must've been close to 1 xG tbh.

      GW3 team:

      Ward
      White / TAA/ Robbo / Walker / James
      KDB / Saka / Diaz
      Haaland / Wilson

Regrettably kept Jesus out, 0.1M off bringing him in for Wilson.

Last week took a hit under the influence to bring in Iversen and Foden which seemed a bit aggressive in hindsight but worked out quite well netting 5 points in total (Foden 9 vs Coutinho 0).

This week im looking at my squad and weighing up options. There are 3 transfers I would *like* to make - with first choice first and fallback option in brackets.
      1) Bailey --> Fodder
      2) Robbo --> Cucurella (Saliba)
      3) Archer --> Toney (Mitrovic)

      Ward/Iversen
      TAA Robbo Cancelo James (Neco)
      Salah Foden Martinelli Bailey/Andreas
      Haaland Jesus (archer)
      0 ITB, 1FT.

In an ideal world I'd bring in Cucu, Toney and Fodder but thats a -8. Even that seems a bit too much to me - but spreading this over 2 weeks some price changes means im getting Mitrovic instead of Toney - and potentially missing out on 3rd striker vs Andreas returns for GW3. Im sure my team is pretty similar to most, and many are allergic to hits but at this stage of the season getting ahead of the template is pretty key.

What are your thoughts on taking aggressive hits or do you prefer to be slow and steady (as other opportunities will present themselves in time e.g. a starting Scamacca might be amazing)?

        Bailey to fodder.

It gives you 0.5 for your next transfer.

Robbo vs Cucu and you wasting a transfer in my humble opinion.

you can make that argument - but the point is that unlocking 2m funds a 3rd striker - which upgrades the XI.
it does feel like the Bailey transfer is the absolute priority at this time to protect TV

Here is how I see things panning out.

Darwin is top of the points table for forwards, he is on 9 points at the moment, and Jesus becomes the bait.

Darwin at 9.2 or even 9.3 might be a frustration you won't want to deal with.

Tomorrow morning we will know if this is what happens...

No, my plan was to get Darwin irrespective of what Jesus points may have been otherwise I could have gone

Jesus Haaland Darwin on WC and still have a good team.

I did not go Jesus because I felt Darwin would be the better option and then I could have my toys in defence as well.

How does having a player that costs 1m more than Jesus allow you to have more "toys in defence"?

Only 1.5m from Mitro - Jesus as well, doesn't kill your defence

Have I ever come across a more self-unaware poster? You avoid Twitter due to the p-----s, but it's okay for you to spam this forum with your terrible advice? Still, clearly the mods are on your side, so who am I to object to you leading newbie posters astray with truly bad advice? It seems that's the direction they want this forum to sink into. 🙄

Have a good time owning Baily next week.

I did not have in my GW1 team as I knew he would provide problems.

Next time don't bother to respond.

You are destracting people from getting rid of Bailey.

                          Ok?

He'll be sat happily on my bench. I'd advise anyone to do that rather than waste a transfer that won''t improve the squad. i'm happy to help people who might be drawn into huge errors by a spammer who doesn't even trust his choices for one week.

As it stands I think I would hold in your position unless Bailey looks like falling.

I’m also not convinced that your end team outscores your current team.

Aggressive hits can be fine, good even, at the right time and in the right context but I don't love the idea of taking them early on with the small amount of information we have. Yours worked out for example, but what if Foden is benched next week (which is possible given his HT withdrawal and Pep's comments)? Taking 2 hits in 2 weeks to move fodder around isn't a plan I like the look of at all when it's not needed (availability issues or a run of bad games, for example).

I do agree with this. I think I just got lucky last week.

Probably the best course of action is just to chill, monitor baileys price. Other options will reveal themselves in the coming weeks that fit whatever budget i have

Luck is always going to be a part of it, on paper getting Foden in for Bournemouth at home was a good shout, but he's had a few occasions where he's been in Pep's bad books so I wonder if this might be a 1-2 game thing, maybe the HT sub was enough. I've taken aggressive hits many times but I guess I feel right now is a bit early, transfer window still open, some players that will get into first XIs coming back to fitness, teams in Europe in a couple of weeks having to deal with midweek games every week for 2 months, etc. Still a lot for us to find out

On the micro-level there's a ton of luck, eg DaSilva's goal, Saliba's og, Kane last-second header and much else. On the macro-level we have Peptation. Whether Foden start next game or not, the bigger picture is he will always be rotated - maybe not as much as last season, but it will still be frustrating. Owning any City asset - even Haaland must be undertaken with this awareness in mind - and cover on the bench.

How is my team selection & bench order looking? Any changes?

        Raya
        Walker - TAA - White
        Salah (c) - Martinelli - Dasilva - Rodrigo
Haaland (vc) - Kane - Jesus

        Ward - Jonny - N. Williams - Andreas

I'm thinking about moving out Mount and/or Bailey for GW3

        A) Mount to Kulu/Saka?
        B) Bailey to Da Silva (freeing up another 0.4)
        C) Bailey to Jensen or Xhaka
        D) Roll FT

I'm keeping Mount. He has 3 very good fixtures. I am moving on Bailey though, if that's any help.

Thanks - who are you thinking on Bailey?

Brentford have some good fixtures, so Da Silva does appeal, and would be a bench option.

Keep Mount if you still have him.

Back on some set pieces and has the fixtures.

        Taa, James, Cancelo, Walker, Wiliams
        Salah, Martineli
        Haaland, Jesus, Darwin

Two very attacking defenders who also have some set pieces.
