How the all-time best FPL managers set up for Gameweek 2

Every Gameweek here at Fantasy Football Scout, we bring you analysis of the teams and chip usage of the leading Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers via the excellent LiveFPL website.

Usually we concentrate on the top 10,000 but we’re in the very early stages of the campaign and the front-runners are still jostling for position.

So instead, we’ll mostly take a quick look at how some of the FPL bosses with the best season histories are set up for Gameweek 2.

INTRODUCING THE ‘LEGENDARY MANAGERS’

Much like our very own Hall of Fame, the LiveFPL site features its own list of the leading 1,000 FPL managers of all time.

You can see the top 10 above, with a very familiar name at the top of the pile.

Other notable names you may recognise further down the list include Finn Sollie (2nd), John Canning (43rd), Pranil ‘Lateriser’ Sheth (52nd), Mark Sutherns (88th) and one of our new recruits for the 2022/23 season, Obay Eid (125th).

OWNERSHIP AND CAPTAINCY

How the all-time best FPL managers set up for Gameweek 2 2

One obvious thing to note is the rise in Erling Haaland‘s (£11.7m) ownership, which sat at 64.7% in Gameweek 1.

Harry Kane‘s (£11.4m) own ownership figure dropped from 35.6% to 5.6%, with the straight swap between the two forwards accounting for the majority of the 30% swing: 275 of the 1,000 managers featured here did that exact move.

The market movement was limited elsewhere, though, with over 60% of these bosses rolling a transfer. Expect the overall picture to be shaken up a bit more in Gameweek 3, when our hall of famers have two moves at their disposal.

Over two-thirds of them have a decision to be made over Leon Bailey (£5.0m) after the Aston Villa man’s benching in Gameweek 1, while 44% may be mulling over Pedro Neto‘s (£5.5m) output and short-term points prospects.

4-4-2 remains the most-selected formation, with over 90% owning a £4.5m forward of some variety and Andreas Pereira (£4.5m) sitting in 93.6% of squads. Neco Williams (£4.0m) is in almost two-thirds of these teams, meanwhile.

2.1% of these historic high achievers saw enough on the opening weekend to play their Wildcard and most of them – 18 of the 21 – shaped it around Darwin Nunez (£9.1m). Time will tell if that was a sage, bandwagon-beating move or an overreaction to the Uruguayan’s returns against Fulham.

While we’re not overly interested in the top 10k at this early stage, the average Wildcard played within this leading bunch shows a similar keen interest in Darwin and a move towards a lighter-in-midfield set-up:

Yeah, some very strange decisions. Saying that I can’t complain - was the best result possible for Utd title hopes. 2 points dropped for each of them. We take those.

      I'm holding.

His next 3 fixtures are very favourable. If he blanks in his next two then I think its time to reassess.

But, for me, two GWs, one of which was always going to be a tough matchup that you wouldn't have expected him to have gotten many points from anyway, is too short a period of games to give up on him for.

    3. Tomerick

I bought him for the fixtures after Spurs not the Spurs game. If you ship him before Leeds you deserve him punishing you.

Bailey has become the problem he was always going to be. With Trippier having bad fixtures for the next 3, I'm forced to play Bailey or Andreas regularly.

Slim pickings on replacements for Bailey. Have 1.0m in the bank.

    A) Gross - good fixtures, on pens.
    B) Neto - has looked lively despite not scoring yet.
    C) Da Silva - 2 goals from 2 shots, Damsgard complicates matters.

I'm thinking I just hold because don't see anyone getting points out of that group.

I would still get rid for someone whose nailed.

You still need a bench regardless of what formation you play.

Villa don't look great and after this week their fixtures get harder. I have Cash as I gambled on getting some early returns from him, but he's looking likely to be my first transfer out of the season this week.

How is Wolves a bad fixture for Trippier? I'm playing him against Liverpool, they always give away a few chances so I don't mind taking the risk. Just keep. Do you have Neco Williams? Playing him against Everton may not be the worst shout

True but he's still club captain and Lampard gave him enormous praise after last season saying he's one of the best people he's met in football. Definitely doesn't have the legs he used to but he's a big influence on the pitch

That does not need a WC. You're GTG. Bailey the main risk. Your WC team looks a little knee jerky (Cucu nailed? Perisic mins? Darwin mins with Jota recovering. Inflexible formation i.e. 2 mids)

Surely you got Trips knowing 2 of his first 5 were against City and Liverpool.

I got Botman instead because I'm happier sitting a £4.5m defender for those 2 games, whereas I'd want to play my £5.0m defender every GW.

I'd stay away from most Twitter accounts regarding this, a lot just twist these stats to confirm their own biases / decisions. The only account I like that posts stuff like this is The xG Philosophy, after most games they post each team's xG and occasionally post different screens or videos of shots and give a bit of info on xG.

Folks need to stop with this nonsense that Xhaka will be benched sooner or later just because Tierney is back and Zinchenko could move to LCM. This ain't FIFA or FM and players who are presently the best, fittest and deserve to start, start. Vieira is far away from taking his spot as well and it looks like Arsenal won't sign any other midfielder. Left trio Z-X-M complement each other very well and will most likely remain starters whether you like it or not. Things can change in a month of course. And yes, there's a slight rotation risk with many players in the squad but they won't be dropped after one bad performance or mistake. Those who are coming back from injuries don't need to be rushed back because first team is playing fine and doing their job. Competition is also good for everyone but unless there's an injury, illness or serious drop of form, I can't see a lot of changes in starting eleven in the coming weeks, like some keep suggesting.

Xhaka has been arsenals best midfielder for about 5 seasons now.
He is also the captain (even if he doesnt wear the armband).

Very under-rated but would walk into most teams in the prem.
Mourinho keeps fishing to sign him which should tell you a lot.

he would not walk in to any of the other big guns.

his problem is that he is liable to moments of sheer madness and letting the side down.

This is part of the game and human nature. Football is also about passion and emotions. He makes plenty of mistakes but there's also an image of a bad boy who isn't judged the same with others. If Kane and Xhaka will make the exact same challenge from the back on opposition player, one will get yellow card and one will be sent off. Some absolutely ridiculous calls were given in the past just because Xhaka was involved. Trust me, I know.

Granit will forever be underappreciated by some fans, let alone others. I think his redemption arc speaks for itself. Compare him with Aubameyang for example and how each of them handled the situation and who tried his best to fix things. Xhaka is a leader and even if he never was or will be a world class player, he's still pretty damn important for this team. Love him or hate him, he always plays for the badge, gives his all and fights until last second. Sometimes this is worth so much more than people realise.

Any downside to playing a 5-2-3 formation? I think much more value in defenders.

It could work well, but the downside is its inflexibility. You'll presumably have 3x4.5 midfielders, which means to change anything will often require hits.

There are plenty of decent 4.5m-5.0m defenders but zero midfielders in that price range apart from Dasilva really

    Ok ladies and gents.

No more comments from me till after the match tonight.

Then I can explain why I went Haaland and Darwin excluding Jesus on my WC GW1 and whether it is or was a bad move or a very good move. I have explained it over and over again though and people still ask or lambast me for not having Jesus.

Just like I have been lambasted about Bailey OF ALL PLAYERS???

Atleast I will not be hiding irrespective of what happens later.

You kneejerk-ed Jesus to Mitro, don’t really wanna un-kneejerk, and are justifying yourself out loud. It’s 1.5m, gosh

And you lambasted Martinelli, Neto and Bailey, realised the worst one of the three after GW1, and prayed no one remembered your comments about Martinelli

Just make your own decisions, no need to seek everyone’s approval of them

Wilson in particular could score in any game. Just wait until his inevitable injury before transferring him. Bamford may be injured so I would consider bringing in Awoniyi vs a shaky Everton and maybe upgrade a mid to Rodrigo if you want Leeds coverage.

Repost from last article boys and girls as missed the new one.
So this rogues gallery are my options for a Bailey replacement this week 😮 can’t go to a 4.5 as already have x2 4.5 mids. Thoroughly depressing but that’s the deal with the pricing this season and my team structure.
Leaning towards Aaronson but I guess it’s whether I push the boat out 😆 to a 5.5 or save 0.5 and go for a 5.0 like Kdh ❓

      Jenson
      Kdh
      Gordon

Aaronson is probably the one with the highest ownership out of those, but his next couple of fixtures are not great. I would probably lean towards Gordon as Everton have some decent fixtures coming up in the short term and he looks like Everton's biggest goal threat currently (which isn't saying much!).

Yeah he definitely does make us weaker in defence. He often holds the ball deep and is the one who always receives it in tight spaces under pressure. Him being not known for tackling doesnt instantly mean he does nothing in defence...
