FPL Gameweek 3: The pros and cons of buying Marc Cucurella

Our team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors have returned for 2022/23 to offer their Fantasy Premier League (FPL) insight, tips and advice during the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Here, five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman ponders a move for Marc Cucurella (£5.0m), weighing up the pros and cons.

... 2

Like many, I’m in the market for a new defender ahead of Gameweek 3, having decided to sell Lucas Digne (£5.0m) after a couple of underwhelming outings. For context, I already own Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Joao Cancelo (£7.1m), Reece James (£6.1m) and Neco Williams (£4.0m). As a result, I am considering a move for Marc Cucurella, Chelsea’s new £5.0m defender, which would mean doubling up on Thomas Tuchel’s backline. So, in this, my latest column, I’m going to weigh up the pros and cons of signing ‘Cucu’.

THE PROS

FPL new signings: Does £5.0m Marc Cucurella provide Chelsea defensive coverage?

Marc Cucurella got off to a flying start on his full debut against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, producing the assist for Kalidou Koulibaly’s (£5.5m) opener. Notably, it arrived from an out-swinging corner, one of four the Spaniard took in Gameweek 2.

During the match, he posted some encouraging underlying stats, as he racked up 57 touches and received 29 passes in the final-third, both team-leading totals. In addition, he attempted two shots, and I do think he has some untapped goalscoring potential in this Chelsea side.

The match saw Cucurella selected ahead of Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) in the starting XI, completing 90 minutes despite having only had a week to train alongside his new teammates. Given that Chilwell has just returned from a significant ACL injury and is still someway short of match sharpness (he featured for the development squad earlier this week), Cucurella’s short-term prospects look pretty good.

“I have a feeling that he (Cucurella) has a bit more feeling for the rhythm and intensity of matches than Ben (Chilwell) at the moment. We keep Ben for substitutions because he is a high-speed runner, an intense runner. But after his long injury I think he lacks a little bit of rhythm and feeling for the matches. That’s why we go for Cucu today.” – Thomas Tuchel

It’s also worth noting Tuchel’s pre-season comments on Chilwell, when he spoke about the need to be cautious.

“Ben (Chilwell) is very ambitious; he couldn’t wait to come back to team training. He looks better and better, but at the same time, it looks like he needs more time to adapt to the physicality of the match itself, which is absolutely normal. It is not only about training and training exercises, little pitches. In the end, it is a very demanding league. We have to take care of him, it’s our responsibility. We can’t throw him in and see what is coming. He is impatient, we will never expect him to be fully patient. He knows, we speak a lot about it. Everything needs its time.” – Thomas Tuchel

Upon signing, Thomas Tuchel suggested he sees Cucurella as both a left wing-back and centre-back (a position Graham Potter utilised him in at times last season), and while the latter role does perhaps feel less likely, his versatility is a real positive.

“I don’t want to get too excited but I have the feeling we signed the new (Cesar) Azpilicueta, in terms of his mentality, attitude, even in terms of his position – just with a left foot. He can play in the back three, he can play wing-back and he is a very nice, very humble guy with his personality.” – Thomas Tuchel

“All three positions on the left side is good for me. Maybe my best position is in a back four, left-back because I play all my career, in academies, in this position and have more movement to be comfortable.” – Marc Cucurella on his best position

Chelsea are a side that relies heavily on their wing-backs for creativity in the final third, with both players handed plenty of freedom to attack. And it does feel like this current Chelsea system is a perfect fit for Cucurella, given that it often resembles a 4-3-3 shape in possession.

In addition to Cucurella’s goal/assist threat, there is clean sheet potential too.

Already this season, Chelsea have shut out Everton at Goodison Park, and their run right up until Gameweek 8 is very decent, which is around the time I plan to Wildcard.

If you were to wildcard this week how many players would you change?

I genuinely think if I'm on WC I'd change 3 players. 12/15 would stay the same. Some talk today on Twitter about how FPL mucked up the pricing and I really do think they messed up by pricing defenders so low and not doing anything to change the scoring system.

I'm not sure I can see when a wildcard will be impactful this year. Defenders being the dominant option makes the game quite dull because by nature they need to be held for a longer period of time to realize value. You don't swap defenders as freely as aattackers. It's much better to have the attackers be the attractive picks because it makes for more variety.

Interesting this Camzy as I’m on wc and I had only 4 difference so I played it to avoid the -8 which is clearly my fault so I have no problem with that. Did some research and just felt that dropping Salah and going a bit different esp after reading the hot topic on kdb/salah it was worth a go. At the end of the day it’s only two free to get Salah back in so why not.

The way things are going by GW8 Man City are completely crushing the league on 22pts, Arsenal are 2nd on 19, Chelsea 18 Liverpool 14.

At that point do you then decide to migrate to City, and ditch the Liverpool players. Train has already left the station.... At that point its time to bring them back in.

thats a very reactive way to play the game though.

the pattern is clear. the only question to me is whether it continues or reverts

Is this season any different than previous ones?

We have great assets at a lower price like James, Cucurella, Walker, Zinchenko, Trippier etc.
Going cheaper at the back makes it possible to put more money up front, be different, and still have a strong team.

It is different because of the number of strong defensive template picks coupled with comparatively overpriced mids and forwards. There are fewer options across the board.

I had to get rid of 4:
      ward/iversen
      dalot
      bailey
      neto

I had only 1ft but still I could have got away with a hit or two
but the real reason I wc was changing team structure. I had 3 premiums: kdb, salah and haaland. That gave me no flexibility at all. I had no way to run from those 5 to 5.5 midfielders

Just have a dirt cheap bench, no 5.0 mids eating your budget away. Plan now!

Once everyone has hit ther WC, it will be 3 up top and you don't want to lose value on junk players.

Those who have played their WC many of them already have 3 up top.

If I hadn't changed James + Neco to Dalot + Rashford hours before GW1 deadline I would've just taken -4 this week. Bailey Dalot Rashford Darwin was too much price sink. I'm 101.1m value atm with probably more to come though probably lose some as will switch back to Salah from KDB

      Possibly 4.
      Robbo, Saka, Bailey, Iversen

5 at a push with Neco/Archer, but they're fodder for reason.

Thing is it'd just look like other teams with the little data we have. Happy to wait a bit.

Honestly, 0. I agree the pricing wasn't good at all (with defenders especially). I do like the way the goalkeepers were priced in isolation, but being able to afford an XI of viable options across the top teams shouldn't be possible IMO

to answer the original posters question, i did WC this week, and I changed 6 players
part of it is form, part of it is to move anti-template.

Iversen, Robbo, Salah, Foden, Bailey, Archer
      to
Mendy, Cucu, Diaz, KdB, Reed, Toney

      Benefits:
      1) Changed a strong X into a strong XI by switching Bailey to Cucu.
      2) Fixed GK
      3) Migrated anti-template KdB vs Salah (which could of course backfire completely) which based on the evidence of 2022 is wholly justified
      4) Shifted funds from defence to attack (Robbo to Toney). This may not be correct, but there is value in other defenders and the 3rd striker spot is a source of points - see Mitro, Toney and potentially Scamacca so it makes some sense
      5) Foden is too much of a rotation risk. Maddison, Diaz, Mount and Saka look better options for the price. Went with Diaz in attempt to 'cover' Salah, but if i was going all in on Liverpool being bad and form should probably pick Madisson who also has had an amazing 2022.

        - GK fix is correct. I did Wardversen to start and knew I would need to remedy at some stage so WC is the time.
        - Archer pick or any non-starting 4.5 forward I never like any season. It's always a trap that requires multiple trades as soon as viable non premium forward shows up. I started with 3 playing forwards as always do and Darwin has become Toney but I'm really interested in Mbeumo for 1m less. Only 20pts less than Toney last season and Toney outscored him in bonus 19pts vs 6pts

Zaha is a good pick but if it doesnt work out there isnt much around there. Maybe Grealish. I think it is imperative to have the 8m slot covered once if not twice. Although having said that there is Rashford who is going to be serious value when Utd's season turns (which might be awhile away but something to monitor).

It's tough for me to reply to this.

I started with Mount in GW1 but did not like what I saw. Didn't think he'd get much from Spurs so sold for Saka going INTO GW2 who I thought would get something/others would find it hard to get him.

Now Mount vs Spurs, I didn't love postionally either, but was expected. If I had kept him, I wouldn't sell for Leeds - given he had a good record against them and Leeds are much more open.

Saka could really go either way. Think he has some top fixtures coming up, but really really need more of the Arsenal play to go down the right side. If it continues not to, it's a bit troubling.

Seems a bit excessive. I don't eve like a hit for just a 0.1m at tomes. It depends on the players you're selling & replacing them with too though?

    Ward (Sanchez)
    TAA Cancelo Gabriel James Trippier
    Salah Diaz Martinelli (Andres Neto)
    Haaland Jesus (4.5)

2 FT- im thinking Trippier to Cucurella but then debating if I downgrade Neto to a 4.5 to avoid a price drop… thoughts?

Mason Mount v Leeds, Leicester, Saints and West Ham last year:

    Minutes played: 517
    PPG: 8.3

I would be delighted with anything around 6 PPG.

I do. I'm no 'fan' of owners of any professional team, they're all entitled, over-rich jerks, but the way these people tried to dangerously protest last time doesn't give me hope that they can make their feelings known constructively. Thing is, do they really think the Glazers are going to SELL the team because of this? It's inane and pointless.

I agree totally bud but that doesn’t mean it can’t really kick off with this sort of thing. The question is should the authorities be ready because if their not they could very easily succeed.

I understand that supporters "feel" closer to the club and perhaps more "ownership" than American sports fans do, but its all an illusion. Unless you own actual shares that have voting power, their support is really equal to fans everywhere else.

That’s just not the reality though, the culture behind a clubs support is intrinsic to the society in which they live…..the rivalry isn’t just club based it’s city based, north/south based, even within a single city based. It truly does mean so so much more than your giving it credit for. Not saying it’s acceptable as Ive already said.

So why sell to foreigners with no football background who certainly don’t/can’t share those values? These are cultural/community treasures, so why let outsiders gain control? I never side with ownership, most especially in sports here in the U.S., but it’s tough to feel much empathy when someone lets wolves in the door and then is surprised by the wolves doing what wolves do.

    Why does everyone feel that Cucu will be subject to rotation as opposed to something like;

    LWB - Chilwell
    LCB - Cucu
    CB - T.Silva
    RCB - Kouli
    RWB - James

    1. FOO FIGHTER
      • 4 Years
      1 year, 8 months ago

For now I see Cucurella at LWB.

Once Chilwell is fully fit which does not sound close according to Tuchel, then yes, perhaps we will see him at LCB.

      1. Zenith UK
        • 7 Years
        1 year, 8 months ago

No I agree, but what I mean is everyone's like, oh Cucu rested, Cucu rested. If they only wanted Chilwell cover they wouldn't have dropped £50M (especially with Emerson & Alonso- granted these are world class players but if it was just cover to get Chilwell fit/rotate they'd use one of those two, no?).

Plus it's Tuchel's signing, and he has openly said he can play in a back three.

    2. Klaren
      • 6 Years
      1 year, 8 months ago

Because Koulibaly was on LCB first two games and James and Azpilicueta can play RCB. You could be right and Koulibaly might be shifted to RCB but there is just no way to be sure of until we see how they line up in the next few.

      1. Zenith UK
        • 7 Years
        1 year, 8 months ago

Kouli is naturally right footed though. I mean it could so easily be Kouli CB with Azpi RCB. TSilva is surely the one who's going to need the rest/rotation, at the big old age of 37 (38 next month).

    3. Dr. Rog
      • 14 Years

      I think over the season
      60% LCB
30% LWB (100% in the short term)
      10% rested

basically same as Dave, but with a left foot.

      1. Dr. Rog
        • 14 Years

Agreed completely. I don't think this man gets rested or rotated. He either plays LWB and Chilwell gets rested or he plays LCB. If anything, he'll get rested once they qualify for the knockout stages in the easier UCL fixtures.

    4. Clintymints
      • 14 Years

Because Chilwell is there and there's a lot of cbs.

Old the season man Silva might get subbed/rested vs pacier opponents shifting Koulibaly over to central cb. Cucurella gives them that left footed cb slot as well as backup/competition for injury prone Chilwell. Great buy. A 2-in-1 purchase that ticks a lot of boxes. A great asset for any team and a decent left foot.

So much more security and options

      1. Zenith UK
        • 7 Years

This is what I mean, do we really think he gets benched over 38 year old Silva, 33 year old Azpi and a recovering Chilwell? Surely not.

        1. Clintymints
          • 14 Years

For certain teams and when more competitions/midweek games show up, maybe. But for now, ride the wave. It's up to him to nail a spot down, but don't be surprised by the odd benching. 5 subs also changes the lay of the land this season, so gota be adaptive and reactive to the changes we have this year.

I've gone for Cucurella in the hope of some attacking returns which Walker is unlikely to provide

If we hear Perisic not in starting lineup would you take -4 to replace with Cucurella?

Seen a lot of teams/posts/videos etc talking about using their 2 Fts to downgrade Robertson/Cancelo etc to accommodate an 8m Midfielder ....however is it worth it?

I'm thinking of just burning a transfer to keep my big 5 of Cancelo, Taa, Robertson, Dias and James.

The whole purpose of doing transfers is to increase points expectancy and unsure at the moment whether going away from the big 5 to ''increase flexibility'' warrants this.

I don't own Robbo but RAWK forum saying he looks tired, they were better when he came off, needs a rest

      1 x 8, 1 x Salah or KDB and then 1x Marti or another 8 if you only have 1 x 7 defender.etc

I have never understood the concept of flexibility. An “inflexible” team can become “flexible” with a 4 point hit, so why build your team around a concept.

Flexible allows not taking unnecessary hits. Some teams like 4.5m non playing forward are so unflexible they need more than a couple of hits to fix if circumstances dictate

Yeah get that. But if your preferred “inflexible team” has outscored by 20 point the you can afford to spend to fix it.

Malacia at 4.5, everyone will be looking to get him in 3-4 GWs time when we signed casemiro and another mid to partner him 🙂

Neto at 91.5% to fall, price changes in 1.5 hours, will be priced out if he falls, make the move now or wait for pressers? Looking for Chilwell news before buying Cucu

Chilwell is on the bench as per the view of 99.99% on here.

Could someone please confirm if FPL statistics price changes are reliable {I know it takes a few weeks to settle the algorithm). Exact money for Perisic to James but want to wait until the pressers. Reckon I am safe but just to check. Cheers

Fpl statistics have been unusually bang on this early in the season than compared to other seasons.

James rose to 6.1 yesterday. He's several days away from another rise, probably after this game week over. Peresic 35% not falling any time soon either

Toney and Gross seem to be both very sensible picks for a number of weeks.
