Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 3?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have plenty of choice for the Gameweek 3 captaincy, and as per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling.

First, we will assess the fallout of the Gameweek 3 captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 BST deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

In the closest captain poll of the season so far, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is the current leader, with 32.5% of total votes from our users at the time of writing.

Just behind in second is Gabriel Jesus (£8.1m), who is backed by a mite under 30%, ahead of his away tie against Bournemouth.

Erling Haaland (£11.7m) occupies third place with just over 12%, followed by Tottenham Hotspur duo Harry Kane (£11.4m) and Son Heung-min (£12.0m), with a little further back.

THE CANDIDATES

MOHAMED SALAH

Mohamed Salah endured a frustrating night against Crystal Palace and produced a below-par performance short of the expected gold standard. Liverpool’s Premier League challenge has stuttered with two consecutive draws and a lack of fluency in attack as the Reds adjust their playstyle to accommodate Darwin Nunez (£9.0m).

The Uruguayan, dismissed for violent conduct, will serve a three-match Premier League ban which ironically could strengthen Salah’s captaincy credentials for Gameweek 3. Across the opening two rounds, Nunez ranks best among all outfield players in the division for goal attempts (nine) and big chances total (five) despite playing just 96 minutes.

The underlying data suggests that Salah has turned provider, ranking second among all outfield players for chances created (nine) after two Gameweeks. Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) should help rather than hinder Salah’s output if he recovers from a knock to deputise for Nunez.

Liverpool travel to face Manchester United in Gameweek 3 who have endured a chaotic start to the season with consecutive defeats to Brighton and Brentford, respectively. The Red Devils rank joint-worst for goals conceded (six), clean sheets (zero), and lead the division for defensive errors (three) over the first two matches.

Erik ten Hag’s intention to play out from the back has suffered early setbacks and Liverpool’s high press will provide an unwelcome acid test. Furthermore, Salah boasts a strong recent record against Manchester United notching five goals in last season’s Premier League matches.

Above: Goal attempts conceded by Manchester United over the last two matches.

Basically. There’s so much crazy value there. So much so I think FPL towers have really messed up the pricing. I have no idea why you wouldn’t want to take full advantage of their mistakes.

I guess the only response to this, would be that FPL have messed up pricing of defenders across the board.

            Saliba 4.5 should be good.
Cucurella 5.0 now it seems very likely it’s his place to lose should be insane value.

Allows me to play Neco too when the fixtures get better.

Wolves look super tight for 4.5 so I like Collins

            Patterson starting at 4.0.

I’ve gone value because I think it’s there with the teams of these defences. Ideally, I have James.

Not as much as Trent, James, Cancelo or Robbo.

I think it's great. Though I liked your old team too. I would prefer Son and James to Salah and Cucurella. Or even an 8.0 instead so you can upgrade Rodrigo and Cucu both

        1. Athletic Nasherbo
          • 7 Years

Which old team? Prior to Wc or a different wc draft?

Salah is the main problem. I don’t think he’s worth 13.0 but I’ve kind of had a huge realisation this year that one of the ways to enjoy the game is having insurance whilst having a big hitter that can go against the grain.

E.g., if I own Salah, Haaland, Jesus I still get half of the points of captainers and thus don’t lose much. Combine that with a KdB not many own is a lethal mix. If I go against Salah I lose the insurance. Yes, it can still be met by my alternatives but banking against Salah is tricky because the alternatives often aren’t as reliable.

          Sorry for long post…

But once I realised I only lost 7 but not captaining Salah over Son GW1 I was convinced!

              KdB Captain GW2 worked too.

The points are in defense this year. I wouldn't do this.

KdB and Diaz have so much weight to drag with this draft. If you drop KDB your Cucurella, Saliba, Collins become TAA, Cancelo and James. There's a reason the template is heavy in defense.

      1. Athletic Nasherbo

I would argue I’m doing ok through another way to play the game.

I captained KdB last weekend. Nobody had him, double the reward.

Just means I have to look for value in the team. I wildcarded because I hadn’t got the value right.

But, I have a better idea now.

Plus you can’t argue there isn’t value across the defender this year. Chelsea LWB @ 5.0, Arsenal defender @ 4.5. Neco @ 4.0m

And you can downgrade someone later if you need funds, it's no biggie.

The reason big at the back is popular is because people aren't intelligent to understand how pricing, positions and points work. They just see high scores in defence and assume that means good value without fully considering the spread across the team. It's not really a criticism, it's just natural. I'm also a human so I'd need tools/assistance to figure all that out! If you pika good combo, it will work, but you're only guessing until it happens, and then it's retrospective. Go for it if you like it!

            • 8 Years

I should say that I think big at the back is perfectly valid. It's all about the individual players, though, at the end of the day.

Call me unintelligent all you like, but my simplistic calculation that a plethora of 5m+ defenders will comfortably outscore equivalently priced midfielders and forwards has yet to be demolished. And when I sat a plethora, I mean there is plenty of choice, hopping about from City to Chelsea to Arsenal to Spurs. There's no decent choice below Martinelli and Jesus further up the field.

              1. Deulofail
                • 8 Years
                1 year, 10 months ago

The game isn't about picking between equivalently priced players. You don't need to play any 4.5-7.5m mids, let alone make this comparison the measure for your decision-making. It's not a restriction imposed by any game rules.

You're missing vital parts of the puzzle when you compare a def to a mid directly; that being the alternative def and mid that you're not going for (and that's even simplistic because it doesn't take into account the whole team, incl bench, nor future transfers/chips).

I'm not calling you unintelligent; I'm calling all humans generally unintelligent, relative to the understanding you need to automatically process the game mechanics and probability.

I can completely understand why big at the back is popular.

As I spoke about previously, it’s essentially another form of insurance. Because they can go big (even though it doesn’t scare me because they’re never captained) people need them.

My final question to you best man is this:

Would you keep Salah on wildcard or do this below:

Cucerella, Rodrigo, Salah > James, Mount, Sterling

            1. Deulofail

      Great Banter over this team!
For my piece I think Cucu and Saliba aren't nailed enough for this lineup, Chillwell will start the odd game against less strong teams (when you'd want Cucu playing) and Saliba may still be at risk when Tomayisu is fit, we just don't know yet. Wouldn't be that suprised to see White partner Gabriel in the centre soon despite his good performances. It just happens to the younger players. Look at Chalobah last year - what did he do wrong at Chelsea to warrant them looking to sign so many defenders. Anyway getting off topic. The rest of defensive picks seem OK if they can keep their places, Neco, Patterson (who i have) and Collins all definately of use if they rotate well.

This is a really fair reply.

        Completely understand and actually agree.

Alternatively, I’m in the money if Chilwell plays champions league and White plays Europa as they have experience in the team.

problem is that people with Bailey generally already have a cheap bench (with him starting). Moving him to a 4.5m leaves you with another bench player. I have him and trying to work out how to significantly upgrade him.

    Guys is Toney a trap?
His stats suggest he’s more likely to assist than score, that’s not much points for a forward albeit his price is attractive especially with their fixtures…

I avoided buying him for Darwin, chosing a 4.5 FWD instead to spend the money elsewhere for a hit (actually 2). So yeah I think he might be. But it's more that I think the money was better spent elsewhere for me. Toney still a good option, regardless of stats from a couple of GWs only.

          Shame about Forest.
But seriously, they've bought in a dozen midfielders - too much competition and 0.5m too expensive for me to consider.

Apparently Jimenez is back this weekend.

Neto should start returning GW4, I reckon.

Wouldn’t be surprised if he scored tomorrow

No, Wolves have just spent big on attacking midfielders. They might increase Neto's output.

I generally dislike 3 premium drafts as they're too rigid, that aside, I'd maybe do Trippier to Cucu and play over Bailey.

Im happy holding onto Trippier for now and benching for the odd fixture. Bailey probably needs to go though

In that case, I'd just do Bailey to 4.5 fodder and play Trippier.

Sorry but not keen on any of those as Mount is a good pick this gwk and Robbo could potentially return. I did Robbo to James as no other Cheslea cover.

Steve Cooper must have been asked by the hierachy: "so what signing do you need that will get us over the line to survive (comfortably) in the Premier League then?" "MGW" please. I really hope that all this spending doesn't come back to bite Forest in the bottom...

To be fair, they were after MGW since they won promotion - I'm surprised they took so long.
Thing is, they've signed a dozen other midfielders in the meantime.

City have won their previous five league games against Newcastle, netting at least four goals in each of the past three.
The Magpies and City are the only sides yet to concede a goal in the Premier League this season.

The last time the Magpies kept a clean sheet in each of their first three league games was in 1961-62 (second tier), while they last did so in the top-flight in 1902-03.

Pep Guardiola has won all 10 of his meetings with Eddie Howe – it’s the best 100% win record one manager has against another in the competition’s history.

Replaced Neto and Bailey with Rodrigo and dasilva early in week before Liverpool game.

Also have Nunez. Worh removing for -4 and for who?

Unlucky bud, trying to catch those price rises comes with a fair amount of risk. Nunez to Toney is the popular pick. Welbeck or Havertz if you feel frisky.

The only player it would be worth taking a -4 hit for selling Nunez would be Jesus.

        Saka > Martinelli
        Sancho > Diaz/Mount

Already made two transfers this week. Wilson to Havertz worth a hit? Great fixtures I want to get on top of soon and Newcastles now much tougher. I still have Trippier. Gutted Wilson's goal was chalked off last week. Two returns from him for my team would have been a very nice start to the season.

I might not want to start Wilson this week, but I wouldn't be bringing Havertz in - he's poor and I do expect Chelsea to bring another striker in to nudge Havertz out of the front 3.
