Scout Picks - Bus Team

FPL Gameweek 9 Scout Picks early selection: Alexander-Arnold and Salah return

We’ve put together our Scout Picks ‘bus team’ ahead of Gameweek 9 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

In this early selection, we select a first draft of our regular picks before they are finalised and published much closer to the deadline.

We are limited to a £83.0m budget for our starting XI, while our bench is also price-capped after a reader vote – although we will continue to offer our ‘alternative’ substitutes in the final Scout Picks based on the old criteria.

The final Scout Picks cement our weekly selection but this ‘bus team’ article – a term coined by the Always Cheating chaps – will discuss the players who are likely to be in the running.

THE LIKELY LADS

Salah's role one to monitor in FPL as Alexander-Arnold continues forays infield 2

We start with Liverpool, who will have had a 17-day gap between fixtures by the time Brighton and Hove Albion visit Anfield in Gameweek 9.

The Seagulls, of course, will be led by new boss Roberto De Zerbi, which does make them a bit of an unknown.

However, with key members of the Reds’ squad returning to action – like Thiago (£5.2m) and Joel Matip (£5.9m) – they will fancy their chances, having beaten Ajax 2-1 in a much-improved display last time out.

Here, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) are ‘the likely lads’, but international minutes could present us with other opportunities.

For example, Luis Diaz (£8.2m) is due to face Guatemala in New Jersey on Saturday and Mexico in California in the early hours of the morning on Tuesday, whereas Darwin Nunez (£8.9m) will be based in Europe for both of Uruguay’s fixtures.

In Chelsea’s first game under Graham Potter last week, Reece James (£6.0m) and Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) were deployed as wing-backs, although the latter was much more of a winger (the Leandro Trossard (£6.5m) role, if you will), with Marc Cucurella (£5.2m) providing support behind him.

“We wanted to get some dangerous width, and Reece [James] and Raheem [Sterling] were that. They were more full-backs in the lateral positions and then midfield players. I thought we got Raheem into some good situations and Reece as well down that side. Mason [Mount], too and we scored a good goal. [But] you don’t want Raheem really defending in his box too often, and I don’t think he did. I think Marc Cucurella managed the situation quite well. I can’t remember too many opportunities they had down that side. Raheem is really good at attacking a backline and scored a fantastic goal. I thought he was really good in the game. Reece balances it off a little bit, and we can still defend in a four if we need to, so that was the thinking.” – Graham Potter

From those wider positions, Sterling was able to net his fourth goal of the season, while James was almost relentless in his attacking forays, which suggests they can cause Crystal Palace plenty of problems in Gameweek 9. Indeed, the Eagles have conceded in each of their three home matches so far.

Leicester City are in a complete and utter mess right now, having lost six Premier League matches in a row, but they have still scored two goals in four of their seven fixtures this season. Now, they face an equally leaky Nottingham Forest side that rank bottom for expected goals conceded (xGC). James Maddison (£7.9m), meanwhile, produced seven shots and created four chances at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, whilst netting his third goal of the campaign.

Elsewhere, Erling Haaland (£12.0m) is up against a Manchester United side that have tightened up of late, allowing just two goals in their last four Premier League matches, but on current form, only injury will keep the Norwegian out of the Scout Picks.

As for Joao Cancelo (£7.2m), his price is the only real obstacle to him finding his way into our weekly selection, which has a budget of £83.0m.

IN CONTENTION

FPL Gameweek 5 round-up: Saturday goals, assists, bonus and injuries 8

With Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur squaring off in the north London derby, we could potentially overlook both sides in favour of those with ‘easier’ fixtures, at least on paper.

For example, Brentford visit a Bournemouth side that are among the five worst teams for both minutes per expected goals (xG) and xGC in their last three matches, despite going unbeaten during that time.

Attacking and defensive representation from Thomas Frank’s side is appealing, then, with Ivan Toney (£7.2m) a key target up front. At the back, Aaron Hickey (£5.0m) could profit from the Cherries’ weaker left-flank, while David Raya (£4.5m) and Ben Mee (£4.5m) are also in the running.

Perhaps the likeliest source of defensive returns, however, will come at the London Stadium, where West Ham United entertain Wolverhampton Wanderers, given that they have netted just six goals between them all season. Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m), Kurt Zouma (£4.5m) and Jose Sa (£5.0m) could all be decent picks, then.

Further forward, Jarrod Bowen (£8.1m) could pick up some support from the Scout Squad panel, but it’s a lot of money to invest, given that lack of attacking threat we touched on above.

We could see another low-scoring affair at Southampton, which is why James Tarkowski (£4.4m) has found his way into the initial picks. The defender ranks among the top five in his position for aerial duels won (20), clearances (42) and blocks (15) this season, and looks at ease in Frank Lampard’s new 4-3-3 formation.

Nathan Patterson (£4.1m) is cheaper still if savings are needed, while Gavin Bazunu (£4.5m), Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m) and Armel Bella-Kotchap (£4.5m) are all options in the Saints camp.

Given Leicester’s ongoing defensive problems, which has seen them concede a whopping 22 goals in their opening seven matches, a Nottingham Forest attacker will surely end up in the mix.

Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.5m), who has taken on a share of corner and free-kick duties following his arrival from Wolves, could profit from the Foxes’ issues defending set-pieces.

Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.9m) and Alexander Isak (£7.0m), meanwhile, ought to be in the conversation for a forward spot if we opt for a three-man frontline.

THE LONG SHOTS

FPL Gameweek 4 hot topics: Zaha, Potter's tinkering and Newcastle's form 2

There probably won’t be too many takers for Wilfried Zaha (£7.2m) in Gameweek 9, given that he faces Chelsea, but he has registered four goals and 15 shots in his five matches this season.

With Potter’s wing-backs positioned high up the pitch, could there potentially be space in behind for Zaha to exploit?

It’ll be a tough ask for any of Leeds United or Aston Villa’s options to force their way past others, but there is potential for Nick Pope (£5.2m) or Kieran Trippier (£5.2m) to sneak in, although at this stage it does feel unlikely, given that opponents Fulham are one of the top-scoring sides in the division.

Nope, it's like this every IB. Many times I've used my WC hoping for double rises over the IB but it rarely happens.

I think he is better value than a 5.7mil mid and is set and forget. If you want to rotate the 3rd striker position with a mid/def that is an option as well. I can see the appeal.

Zaha - doesn't have a bad fixture until the WC.
      Toney a good option too.
Not sure about Isak - Wilson to come back so may be pushed a bit wider, and his penalty papered over the cracks of an ordinary performance last game.

  7. Wildcard in GW15?

Anyone considering an alternative WC week to GW9 or 13?

Strongly considering saving WC till GW15, myself. Conventional wisdom is that you won't see the benefit in just two weeks, but there's not a big difference between my WC and non-WC teams this week, or in GW13, while I'd probably be selling 6-9 players in GW15, which should see a greater effect overall, even if only from 2 GWs.

The sacrifice is that I'd have to play all three of Andreas, Patterson, and Neco in GW12 instead of just one or two of them, but that's not huge, especially with their decent fixtures.

Benefits include avoiding a hit I would most likely do to dead-end into GW12. I may even save a FT into GW12 if I'm lucky.

Considering fixtures, if Man Utd (avl, ful) are firing, I can double or triple on them easily, with those prices, while still trippling on Man City (FUL, BRE), and picking the best City players on the short-term instead of the long-term. West Ham have a good two fixtures (CPL, wHU), so it's an opportunity to jump on any player that's actually built up a case from now until then over their good fixtures, while avoiding Man Utd away in GW14. Same deal for Leicester (eve, whu) after their MCI fixture, as they might have built up some form over their good fixture run, with Daka, Vardy or others making a case for themselves. Could be a good time to pick a bargain from Brighton (wol, AVL) too.

And it's a good time to jump off some/all Arsenal (che, wol), Liverpool (tot, SOU), Spurs (LIV, lee) - though I will likely not own any, Chelsea (ARS, new) and Fulham (mci, MUN), and maybe some others that won't affect me. This so I can target 2 GWs as aggressively as possible

I haven't made the decision yet, as it rides a lot on news from the international break, including the availability of ASM (who I would buy for a hit and dead-end into 12), Odegaard (who I have yellow-flagged in my team), and other potential injuries. But I do like that patience on the wildcard means I don't have to be making transfers that I'm not actually convinced by over the next few GWs, and I can wait until things become a little more obvious (or at least hope they do!).

    Example WC15 team:

    Sanchez
    Cancelo Dalot Estupinan
    KDB B.Fernades Sancho Zaha
    Haaland Scamacca DCL

I would rather target Arsenal v sou/NFO in 13/14 than speculate on Man Utd / West Ham (whose fixtures aren't even as good as Arsenal in 13-14). Shame on you for suggesting otherwise! 😉

I would have two Arsenal players in GW13 already, and potentially 2 FTs to bring in KDB and an Arsenal defender, for example.

So benching 2x Ars & Haaland? Hmm ok I guess if you can have 2x City & 3x Ars in GW13 (or vice versa) without hits then maybe its fine to explore alternatives. The proposed WC certainly looks very differential, but I don't know, my faith in West Ham especially is extremely low right now & I dont really see those 2 away games (esp Ful) as such amazing targets to warrant triple Man Utd

          1. Deulofail
            • 8 Years

Yeah that would be the plan. I think there are quite a few potential options that could emerge as good punts or obvious choices, not just Man Utd and West Ham, but it is a gamble that they do emerge, of course.

To counter, I think WCs, transfers and even hits at this time, and pre-GW13, also seem to be including quite a few blind-ish gamble, and they are for much longer-term than 2 GWs.

I would just keep Trent and Diaz, and probably leave it at that. The sacrifice is not having, say, Darwin (as I'm very unlikely to get Salah on WC13 anyway). So that's a real sacrifice, but how much better is he than, Mitrovic or Jesus, who are my other 2 players in GW13 & 14, hypothetically. All the other players in my team are good with good fixtures, too, so the sacrifice is minimised.

Worst case, Jesus gets suspended for GW13 and I have to sell him for Darwin and ignore KDB, or take a hit for them both, but plenty of hits flying around at this point, and my alternative strat would include at least one hit anyway. I feel like there are downsides, but Liverpool ownership isn't really one of them.

We're not in GW15 now, so I don't know what the team would be. Triple Utd is just one possibility, but so is double, single or none 🙂 It's only for 2 weeks so I don't need to guarantee there's a lot of amazing long-term options.

WC in GW15 or 16 is close to being a 1 or 2 week free hit chip, could be very good strategy if your GW13 team doesn't need a wildcard.

One of my early plans was to play my Wildcard in GW15 in order to prepare for a Bench Boost in GW16, but then I unfortunately wasted my Bench Boost in GW2 (a very bad decision).
I had started GW1 with a strong squad, but my early transfers and a couple of unnecessary hits only made it weaker, so I played my Wildcard in GW6 to repair the situation and change formation to 3-4-3.
For those who are happy with their current squad going forward and still have their Wildcard available though, I think it would be more natural to play it in GW13 rather than in GW15, unless it is to be followed by a Bench Boost in GW16.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years

Interesting. I don't know about it being more 'natural' for me, either way, but I can see the appeal of including a GW16 BB. E.g. This in GW16 with 1FT remaining:

        Sanchez
        Cancelo Dalot Estupinan
        KDB Antony Sancho Zaha
        Haaland Scamacca DCL

        Pickford | Patterson, Neco, Martinelli

Not sure the BB would be worth it. On the one hand, getting an automatic 4 points per position is generally undervalued with a BB, since we put more emphasis on the returns than appearance points. Here I would essentially lose 8 points for it being a SGW.

However, there's surely a lot of value in keeping Patterson and Neco, Ward (and maybe Andreas) throughout the season if they keep starting (which was my strat from GW1), and there's certainly no guarantee that they will have the DGWs at the right time for your chip plans later in the season, so getting BB done now means you don't need to carry a bloated bench for any amount of time. Sure, the same arguments are made every year, but we really do have bargain basement options for 4+ bench spots this season, and maybe that's what I want to take advantage of.

Food for thought. Thanks for the BB idea.

Half-tempted to use it as a FH in GW16.

Treble City and Liverpool, Double Spurs, Double Chelsea.

Like you said, not enough of a variation from my regular team to be tempted to use it yet. Couple of hits here and there likely to do the job (-8 this week more than paid off immediately).

It's like a Free Hit, I suggested it too ... it is a good idea if you don't really need to use a WC up to then

Lots of differentials to consider from lopsided fixtures like Fulham v Man U, Liverpool v Soton, City v Brentford, Newcastle v Chelsea, Spurs v Leeds & Wolves v Arsenal ... FH written all over that GW 😉

a quick play and I can afford this

      Allison
James, Perisic, Cancelo, Rashford, Bernardo, Diaz, Mount
      Kane, Jesus, Haaland

    0.4 ITB

    Guaita
    Cancelo / James / Trippier
    Foden / Son / Zaha / Maddison
    Haaland / Toney / Isak

    Iverson / Andreas / Patterson / Emerson

Not completely sold on Guaita atm, feedback welcome.

Any possibilities of DGW or BGW before the World Cup break?
Maybe some of the postponed fixtures will be shoe-horned in somewhere?

Rearranged games seems unlikely - no team currently has more than 2 games to rearrange, and the PL tend to kick the can down the road in this situation.

OK. I'll keep my powder dry for a few GWs, some players are bound to pick up injuries etc.

Yeah it’s a tricky one mate, could lose Jesus and play 4-4-2 or Cancelo to a 3.9, no easy way without a sacrifice unfortunately

I think just have a plan to get TAA back in a few weeks. Maybe Cancelo to TAA in GW12.

Yeah if I lose TAA plan would be to get him back in 12 mate by losing cancelo or Jesus with 2 frees for that gameweek, I don’t think he keeps a clean sheet against Arsenal or city so there’s only the Brighton game I think he could punish me, but Brighton have been excellent and will have to impress a new manager so could even see them scoring too really

Zaha. Diaz is a good player but i find him struggling a bit with the PL. He may improve but Zaha is more settled and has been in good form so far.

I would't say Diaz is struggling. He has 3 goals in 6 PL games.

Liverppol assets just aren't favourable over the next 3 fixtures but from GW12, Diaz will be one of the 8m mids you want to own.

Can I ask why not? No Salah and a weak midfield is my reasoning. And a dreadful keeper pairing right now.

Would get Salah, Maddison, Zaha, Toney and a good keeper

I want Haaland, Salah and Kane on my wildcard. How would you fill the last two spots in this squad? Will play Neco or Andreas often depending on the fixtures, so these last two players will usually probably appear only from the bench, if needed.

    Pickford - Begovic
    Cancelo - Trippier - James - Neco - *****
    Salah - Zaha - Martinelli - Andreas - *****
    Haaland - Kane - Mitrovic

Are we expecting a comprehensive Liverpool win at home to Brighton? I can still see City getting at least 2/3 goals vs Utd at home and the likes of Kdb profiting.

Bookies have the handicap line at about the same for both Man City and Liverpool this week - I probably wouldn't bother swapping one for the other (e.g. KDB to Salah, or vice versa) using FTs this week, and if on WC Man City look more appealing for the next few than Liverpool.

Been considering dropping cancelo who actually does not have 7M+ xGI despite his real output.

It would lead to a weak at the back wildcard that i dont hate if guaita plays. Thoughts? Thanks!!

    Guaita Ward
    James Trippier Fofana Patterson Neco
    KDB Diaz Zaha Martinelli Pereira
    Kane Haaland Isak

I dropped him too, but I am scared. Considering playing Cucurella instead of him and hope for a CS against Wolves

      Quite weak...

Not keen on either GK really - fixtures aren't everything.

James, Trippier are good options. Fofana risky as less attacking output. Patterson unproven. Neco nice and cheap.

KDB yes. Diaz covers Liverpool. Zaha yes. Martinelli alright, off form a little and doesn't pay GW12. Pereira yes.

Kane seems a waste of money and a waste of a forward spot...either get Son or downgrade to Toney/Mitro

      Isak and Haaland yes.

Haha I feel like I'm just reaching breaking point on my no-Cancelo experiment...
Although his GI threat is a little down on last season, I feel like he is now starting to find ways to get more directly involved in chance creation, and is still scooping bonus even without it.

    Trippier Cancelo N. Williams James
    KDB Martinelli Diaz
    Haaland Jesus Mitrovic

    Sanchez, Gross, Saliba, Andreas

    Should I:

    B) KDB to Salah
    C) Use Wildcard
