Assessing the best FPL players from Man Utd

Throughout the 2022/23 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, our team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors will be sharing their thoughts, tips and own transfer plans.

Only Premium Members are able to read every single one of these pieces, so sign up today to get full access not just to the editorial content but all of the other benefits, from hundreds of Opta stats to a transfer planner.

Here, two-time Indian FPL champion Lateriser assesses the Manchester United squad ahead of a favourable fixture swing.

The FFS Pro Pundits 34

Not often in the last few years have I been asked to write specifically about Manchester United, which in itself is quite encouraging.

In the next three Gameweeks, the Red Devils face West Ham United at home followed by two trips to Aston Villa and Fulham.

It’s worth noting that both West Ham and Aston Villa have the best expected goals conceded (xGC) record over the last six matches. So, if opting for a United attacker, the expectation should be more ‘steady stream’ rather than an explosion of points. Their underlying attacking stats haven’t been great (ranking near the middle) but it is worth noting that a bad start was then followed by better results against tougher teams.

The last five games have been against Manchester City, Everton, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, a selection of the league’s stingiest defences.

THE ATTACK

Gameweek 9 brought Antony‘s (£7.6m) first full game, so it’s worth looking at the data since then to identify trends as Erik ten Hag’s side has finally settled into a rhythm.

Let us look at goal threat first.

For more on Gameweek 14, my fellow Pro Pundit Zophar and I did a short comprehensive podcast where we discuss Liverpool, Arsenal and the short-term flings we like for the final pre-World Cup weeks. You can watch it below:

World Cup: Was wondering how many of the community are thinking of investing their time in participating in a 'fantasy WC'? Personally I believe given the intensity of fixtures post Christmas/WC that the tournament would be a welcome break to relax & enjoy the tournament for what it is & apart from the matches themselves maybe spend some time with the blessing that is my family?

I might play it very casually, not bothering with the kind of research & effort that I usually put into FPL. But then for me its not really a decision between family time / football time

If I can find cash leagues I will. I don't see the point in playing fantasy games for OR and I certainly don't play for fun. Cash leagues are harder to find in these type of comps

Like Champions League, I don't know enough about other players from outside of the Premier League, so I won't be taking part. If this means I have to spend more time with the family, so be it.

Thanks for your considered replies peeps. Will give it a miss myself apart from monitoring injuries & what players progress to the latter stages given possible rests etc. Good luck this gw. Cheers! MTW

Just wasn't having fun, not as much as I could be spending my time elsewhere.

It takes a week for anything to happen and when it does, so little is under your control.

      Tricky.

The fact he played 90 is weird, but perhaps suggests how integral he is to this new system.

I guess Carvalho could play there but I do doubt Klopp playing both Elliot and Carvalho again.

I think he starts, but that’s 55-60% sure.

I have Maddison and I don't know what to do with him.
    A) keep and play against City;
    B) bench and play Andreas instead;
    C)sell and buy Almiron;
D)sell and buy Foden for a hit.
    E)something else?
    My team
    Sanchez/Kepa
    Cancelo/Trippier/ Saliba/Guehi/Neco
    Salah/Martinelli/Zaha/Maddison/Andreas
    Toney/Haaland/Jesus

No need to sell this week. Play Andreas and then use the extra FT next week to sort out the no City mid situation.

I can ser the temptation to sell Maddison before City.
On the flip side of the argument is that Leicester will score. Thats guaranteed. Maddison usually involved when they score and is a big game player for them.
And then two decent fixtures, with for example Arsenal next in 15 is Chelsea, if Saka were in your mind. Foden if he plays is good, but Maddison is secure starter. And for a hit you are almost a goal behind with 3 games left.
I would play him. Over Andreas. Leicester-City is a 2-5 something game.

Where it's clear that a player is responsible for first goal conceded, deduct points from that player. The keeper and defenders keep their CS bonus. If a forward misses an easy goal chance a the attacking players don't lose points, but if a player makes a stupid mistake why should all the defenders and keepers miss out on points?

I think the main problem with FPL's design (and something that sees engagement drop) is that it is a game that makes it easy for people doing well to pull away and difficult for people doing badly to catch up (hence so many dropping out early) because of player price changes among other things. It's the exact opposite of 'rubber-banding' in good game design (think Mario Kart in how rubbish drivers can still have fun, catch up and win).

The way around this imo would be a contract system. So every player in the game can be played for e.g. 20 games a season and then you are locked out from using them. It would make it more tactical for the engaged players like us, but would also mean casuals can still catch up with a bit less luck required.

Failing that, price changes made once a week at a set time, similar to what FanTeam does.

      1. GreennRed
        • 12 Years

Yeah but the good players plan for most eventualities and if they get ahead and get a good rank at the end then fair play to them. I won't be one of them but it's no less enjoyable.

So remove even more of the skill from the game?
We already have extra wildcards, free hits, and influencers giving out their entire team selections.

Blue Shells are tolerable for a 2 minute race in a Nintendo video game for all ages.
We don't need them in a 9 month long game ruining people's hard work and dedication.

I think that giving us all unlimited transfers over the World Cup break was a big mistake.
They should have just had one Wildcard that could be used at any time of the season and another that could be used in GW17 or later.
We would then all have had a wildcard to use in GW17 if we needed one then, and the choice of using the other either before or after the World Cup break.
The Second Wildcard used to become available in January and could easily have been brought forward a couple of weeks.
It was quite unnecessary to have Unlimited Transfers in GW17 in addition to the two Wildcards.

When we used to only have one Wildcard, we had the choice of either playing it early or saving it for the Doubles and Blanks at the end of the season, and this led to more variety between different teams.
If we had had just the two Wildcards this season, and no Unlimited Transfers, I would probably have planned to use the first one in GW17 and then to save the second one for later.

Seems a bit severe, but if implemented this should only kick in after identical moves have been made by multiple players on the same dates for several Gameweeks, or if it can be proved that these are really multiple teams set up by single individuals.
Content creators ought to stick to explaining their thoughts and giving advice, not telling their followers their own exact moves on the same days that they make them themselves.
But even FPL themselves are guilty of too much spoon-feeding, such as recommending entire template squads. This detracts from the possible variety of the game and does not encourage players to think for themselves.

More small sources of points as points is why we play.

1 point for a clean sheet half which increases to 4 as is currently the place at 60 mins / full time. This keeps it interesting on defenders after conceding and banks a point at half time (45 mins).

      Other small additions:
1 point 2 or 3 shots on target
1 point per 2 or 3 tackles (have to check data)
1 point 90% pass accuracy for midfielders and attackers

Ideally we should be seeing more players getting 3-4 points as standard

Gk penalty save should be 6 points

I’d also add an ‘elite’ or ‘beginner’ option where you can adjust starting budget. E.g 95m—105m or remove chips. Whether there comes with a score bonus or not is debatable. For example elite team starting with 5m less budget but a 10% weekly score boost.

Basically a few different ways to play with a handicap system to cater for different attitudes and ability levels.

I've said before that altering starting budget based on historic performance might be a way to go eg top 100k get 95m, top 200k get 96m, top 300k get 97m, top 400k get 98m, top 500k get 99m and everyone else gets 100m

The elite are therefore 'disadvantaged' giving those lesser skilled, lessee experienced players the ability to compete.

Minus 1 for EVERY goal conceded.

Never fails to look ridiculous to me that when a team is thumped the scores of the defenders don't reflect this.

on the same token, GK's should get a point for a win or a point if they lose. It would make the top keepers more of an option over their defensive counterparts, as there isn't much scoring between 4.5m and 5.5m

Just some basic touches and the game can be gold.

Change in the baps system + correct classification of players.
        (Which I feel is basic)

        For eg -
Salah should have been a fwd long time ago.
The game is all about midfielders.
A fwd scoring a goal should definitely be higher baps.

        Also,
Haaland scored a hattrick against forest and got 17 . You know how difficult it is for a player to score a hattrick? (Maybe not haaland)
BUT the point is you kind of feel cheated only getting 17 in a hatty.
There should be some hattrick bonus as well, like +3 or double the baps player is on if he scored a hatty ... Something like that...
And fwds will also benefit coz they have higher chance of scoring 3 goals than a mid.
        Think about it

Extra point(s) for a goal line clearance. They're not celebrated as much as a goal, but may turn out to be as good as, and might just have saved your GK/defenders their clean sheet or points.

I think captain points are excessive, they can be reduced by perhaps awarding the armband wearer only minimal additional points for attacking or defensive returns only.

The World Cup Fantasy game used to allow goal line clearances by outfield players to count as saves and gain points.
In one infamous match, Suarez was awarded a point for a 'save', and shortly afterwards was sent off for a goal line handling offence in a separate incident. (A couple of other Uruguayan players also tried to stop this shot with raised hands, but Suarez was the one that the ball hit). Many fantasy players thought that he had been awarded the save point for the shot that he had handled, not realising that these were actually two separate incidents.

At the start of that tournament, players were deducted points for unsuccessful passes, and in the first match Evra finished with a negative score despite a man of the match performance because his crosses were regarded as unsuccessful passes. The rule was immediately changed.

No 50% loss on selling price when in profit. This week is a perfect example where if i received the full 12.2m for Haaland i may have been tempted on a one week punt elsewhere but not worth it when i would lose so much value.

Nah, if you kept 100% of price rises, you could create ridiculous team value early on if you WC very early on and brought the 10 players that rise each night and then sold etc. The 50% rule works very well IMO.

        1. Remove the budget restriction from the Free Hit chip. Make it Unlimited Budget like the Limitless Chip. It is named Free Hit, so there should not be any restrictions to it.

        2. Some people don't like chips. But since Fpl will keep it, give every 2 TC, 2 BB, 2 FH and they should be used in 2 slots. Slot 1 : GW 1 to 19. Slot 2 : GW 20 to 38. Just like the WC.
This will lead to a variety of different strategies and different teams.

Get rid of fixed deadline. Like fantasy NFL you should be able to change players in your team right up until 90 minutes before their particular game.

Obviously once a player has already played you can't swap them out.

With regards to transfers in this scenario, deadline for a GW's transfers should be 90 minutes before the last game of the GW, not first.

What a cracking thread of ideas. Imagine you’re the team at FPL reading this list trying to find a way to build them all into one game - countless scenarios.

        • Remove formation restrictions so you can play 2 defenders, 5 mids & 7 forwards
        • Rollover more than 2 Free Transfers
        • Penalise individual defenders for goals conceded rather than whole backline
        • All out attack chip
        • Best 11 chip where it picks your strongest 11 points
        • Captain override chip where it picks your best player points
        • 38 free transfers at start season to use across season as you like
        • Max tenure for players selected or number of times you can pick them eg you can play a player for max 19 games and then need to move them on or if you sell Salah buy him sell again you can only transfer that player so many times
        • Differentiate defenders points to stop teams of full backs, for example CB goal worth 1 pt more than full back
        • Changes to 60 mins clean sheet or 2 pts per half for clean sheet
        • Sell your chips for transfers or £m values
        • Sell your accumulated transfers for another chip
        • Half points introduction for players coming off bench
        • VC only x1.5 the score or sub captains sees the score depreciate
        • Injured player = free transfers
        • Auto bonuses for things; 1 goal = 4 points, 2 goals = 9 points, 3 goals = 14 points, consecutive compound scoring
        • 2 subs per position regardless of formation, bigger squad
        • Unlimited players / budget chip so you could have a total team of just City or Liverpool and no budget cap for one week, Limitless Chip
        • 2 player team limit and can’t be same position
        • Can’t pick the same captain consecutively

The major problem I see specially in the last few years is that captaincy is not exciting anymore with Haaland/Salah perma caps having 180% EO week in week out.
One way to tackle it would be letting people also choose a couple more players.
        One player gets 2x
        Second one gets 1.75x
        Third one gets 1.5x

Some people will opt for a threemium strategy, and a lot will have different players for 1.5x and 1.75x for sure. Also the order matters.

Currently, even If I feel Salah outscores Haaland, I am scared to cap Salah because the risk is huge. In the scenario mentioned above, I can go Haaland 1.75x to play safe and also go Salah 2x

I've been away for a couple of days, so I've only just gotten around to reading this hot topic. There are some fantastic suggestions for making the game better. My contributions are:

        1. A maximum of two players can be chosen from each team.

        2. You can't pick the same captain in consecutive weeks and need to rotate.

I remember when CR7 was a young kid SAF told him off for doing pointless tricks. He used to beat the same man repeatedly just because he could. SAF taught him to use his abilities as a weapon, rather than just for show.

Ten Hag now needs to do the same with Antony. A spin might be a good trick in tight areas, but looks absolutely ridiculous in open spaces 😆

      Trippier Saliba Targett*
      Salah(C) Foden Bowen* Zaha Rashford
      Haaland Firmino

Nah, binning for Saka this week. Losing pens was bad enough even before any injury.

      Dunk > White?
      or
      Save FT (and play Perisic)

I'd say play Perisic, Tottenham need a result after what happened midweek and I feel like Conte will want to start his strongest team.

Hey guys, hope everyone is having a good day, just wanted to ask for a bit of advice here cause I'm stuck on what to do this week, my team currently is:

      0 ITB and 1 FT
      Pope (Ward)
Trippier, Dalot and Cancelo (Gomez and N. Williams)
Salah, Martinelli, Saka and Sancho (Andreas)
      Haaland, Mitrovic and Firmino

I'm thinking to do one of these three options:
A: Roll the transfer, but then I don't know who to start between Andreas and Sancho.
B: Firmino and Sancho -- Wilson and Antony or Rashford (-4)
C: Salah and Firmino -- Foden and Kane (-4)

Any advice or ideas would be much appreciated

What about just Sancho to Rashford?

That's a great idea, thank you and it saves me taking a hit, do you think that Rashford outscores Almiron?

        Sancho to Almiron.

I did consider that, I'm just unsure if Almiron will continue like this, I have bad luck by bringing in players who did well recently only for them to do nothing XD

      1FT, 2.2 ITB, thoughts?

      Pope, Iversen
Cancelo, Trippier, Kilman, Webster, N. Williams
      Salah, Foden, Bowen, Martinelli, Andreas
      Haaland, Mitrovic, Solanke

A: Transfer Solanke out and play Bowen/Andreas
B: Transfer Bowen to Saka & play Andreas
      C: Transfer Kilman/Webster out and play Bowen/Andreas

Callum Wilson just now on Talksport confident he'll be in squad for Qatar. He's probably behind Calvert Lewin in South gate's plans but ahead of Toney. Hard to see the cautious Southgate punting on Toney. He needs a Freehit chip!

What on earth has Calvert Lewin done to be in the squad, I really dont know

Very little recently. Still not match fit. But Southgate will bring him because he has 4 goals in 11 caps, too cautious to risk uncapped Toney.

Toney would be decent in the squad even just as a penalty taker, 20/20 for Brentford!
