Frisking the Fixtures

Who has the best FPL fixtures over the next six Gameweeks?

Once the six-week domestic break ends on Monday 26 December, matches come thick and fast for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

Our regular frisk of the fixtures sees us assess the clubs and players with – in theory – the strongest and weakest runs over the coming half-dozen Gameweeks.

It’d be foolish to ignore everything beyond that point, of course, with a Double Gameweek 23 scheduled for Arsenal and Manchester City.

Here, Scout’s colour-coded Season Ticker is the primary source. Using this tool as a Premium Member, you can sort by difficulty, rank by attacking and defensive potential or find budget rotation pairings. You can even set your own difficulty ratings, should you disagree with our own.

You can see a tutorial on the Season Ticker below:

OVERVIEW

BEST FIXTURES

CHELSEA

It was announced over the World Cup break that three previously-postponed matches have been inserted into the FPL calendar. By adding Fulham v Chelsea to Gameweek 19, we get our first Double Gameweek of the season – one that makes the meeting with Manchester City less off-putting.

Four meetings with the three newly promoted clubs follow over the coming six Gameweeks, while even Liverpool away isn’t the formidable test it used to be as the Reds – like Chelsea themselves – have been shipping chances for fun of late.

In defence, Reece James (£5.8m) has been out for a while with a knee injury but may return in time for the league’s resumption. However, FPL managers may be hesitant at buying him again, such is his injury record, occasional moves to centre-back and the tendency of head coach Graham Potter to rotate.

Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.5m) is a tempting cheaper option but there are also concerns about whether he’s going to be fit enough to feature come Gameweek 17.

No reliable attacking options stand out. There isn’t a nailed-on forward, whilst Mason Mount (£7.5m) is probably the pick of midfielders but has only returned in three matches so far.

MANCHESTER CITY

As if we needed more reasons to stack up on Man City options! With Arsenal to chase down and a fresh Erling Haaland (£12.2m) that wasn’t involved in the World Cup, they now have a (provisional) Double Gameweek 20 to tempt managers into a triple-up.

Despite the opponents looking tough, had this frisk been over eight Gameweeks instead of six, Pep Guardiola’s men would have ranked first because they also have a Double Gameweek 23 on the radar.

Joao Cancelo (£7.4m) is one of only four players whose ownership exceeds 50 per cent, although some believe he isn’t as essential as last season due to the higher price tag and having a lower rate of goal attempts. He is the leading defender for penalty area touches, though.

In midfield, FPL royalty Kevin De Bruyne (£12.6m) is more of an assist machine than a goalscorer this time. He is reliable and consistent but many will instead be tempted by Phil Foden (£8.3m).

Almost 800,000 bought the England star for Gameweek 13, only to then see him benched for the next three outings. You have been warned.

SOUTHAMPTON

At the other end of FPL popularity is Southampton, where only James Ward-Prowse (£6.2m) is in over one per cent of squads. The majority of his owners are likely inactive teams, having seen him score ten times last season yet only deliver one attacking return between Gameweeks 2 and 15 this time around.

Under new manager Nathan Jones, the Saints have a fixture run so good that it ranks above two sides that have a Double Gameweek.

There are no meetings with big-six sides or Newcastle United in the next seven Gameweeks, with a home match against goal-shy Wolves to follow in Gameweek 23.

They have the league’s joint-worst ‘best’ player, with Che Adams (£6.4m) only on 50 points. The forward may be their leading asset, with such good fixtures and a price tag that provides a differential option to Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.8m) and the possibly banned Ivan Toney (£7.4m).

The evidence so far suggests it’s probably best to avoid their defence but the arrival of a new manager brings with it fresh hope. Southampton have collected the fewest clean sheets in 2022/23 but left-back Romain Perraud (£4.4m) has already scored two goals and is the leading FPL defender for shots.

FULHAM

Speaking of Mitrovic, his World Cup involvement means that the Serbian has recovered from the foot injury that kept him out of the last two Premier League matches.

The addition of Double Gameweek 19 will secure the popularity of a player whose nine goals have only been bettered by Toney, Haaland and Harry Kane (£11.6m). Although it should be mentioned that Mitrovic has zero assists to his name and is one yellow card away from a suspension.

Backed from the start to be this season’s best £4.5m bench midfielder, Andreas Pereira (£4.6m) is doing so well that he may force his way into starting XIs over this fixture run.

Two goals and five assists have arrived – could he be rotated with another budget-friendly midfielder to enable a ‘threemium’ squad?

The ‘double’ obviously skews the ticker somewhat in favour of those sides with an extra fixture, and it should be said that their Gameweek 20-22 run is one of the worst in the division.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Whilst Spurs have a provisional Double Gameweek 20, it’s a tough pair versus the top two, with a second meeting with Man City soon after.

Still, the three fixtures leading up to that pencilled-in ‘double’ are appealing in their own right, while a defensively suspect Fulham follow in Gameweek 21.

Only a pair of late comeback wins have prevented it being five successive defeats for Antonio Conte, so the returns of Son Heung-min (£11.6m) and Dejan Kulusevski (£8.0m) will provide a much-needed boost.

The Swede’s 27 Premier League appearances have produced six goals and 14 assists, making him a strong alternative for those who think a forward line with both Kane and Haaland is too top-heavy.

Surprisingly, only four teams are conceding more shots than the Lilywhites and they gave multiple goals to Bournemouth and Leeds United. Perhaps it’s best to avoid their defence, especially with rotation commonplace at wing-back and even occasionally at centre-half.

ALSO CONSIDER

Looking at teams without a confirmed Double Gameweek, the fixtures look great for well-owned Newcastle United trio Kieran Trippier (£5.9m), Nick Pope (£5.3m) and Miguel Almiron (£5.8m). With England out of the World Cup and Trippier and Callum Wilson (£7.4m) barely used, there should be no major concerns over fatigue or late arrivals back.

Darwin Nunez (£9.0m) looked great for Liverpool in Gameweek 16. He’d be a very popular way to avoid spending big on Mohamed Salah (£12.8m), while injured attackers Luis Diaz (£7.8m) and Diogo Jota (£8.8m) look like they won’t be ready to feature for a while yet. After beginning the season with ‘essential’ status, it’s hard to find a way back in for the expensive Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m).

Nottingham Forest’s fixtures are okay but only the ‘out of position’ Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.5m) is in any sort of form. Cheap wing-back Neco Williams (£4.0m) isn’t even guaranteed minutes anymore.

Manchester United has an outstanding first three fixtures for a short-term way to approach this window of unlimited free transfers. Marcus Rashford (£6.7m), Bruno Fernandes (£9.8m) and Diogo Dalot (£4.8m) are all now heading home from Qatar, while Anthony Martial (£6.7m) is fit – for now – and building up fitness in mid-season friendlies.

At Leicester City, Danny Ward‘s (£4.1m) place in FPL squads is probably secured regardless of opponents. James Maddison (£8.2m) has been with the England squad but not getting any minutes.

As mentioned earlier, Arsenal have a ‘double’ in Gameweek 23, so it’d be unwise to overlook the league leaders. However, some iffy fixtures surround it.

The Gunners are among the seven best teams for xGC this season; the other six sides they meet between Gameweeks 17-23. At the other end of the pitch, Brighton, Newcastle, Spurs, both Manchester club and Brentford are all top-half material for minutes per xG.

WORST FIXTURES

What can FPL managers expect from Julen Lopetegui at Wolves?

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

The first four games under Julen Lopetegui don’t look too bad until you remember that Wolves are bottom of the league and have scored just eight times from 15 matches.

Forwards Diego Costa (£5.5m) and Raul Jimenez (£6.8m) are out of form, whilst early-season template pick Pedro Neto (£4.9m) has an ankle injury.

There had been slight investment into their defence, having secured four clean sheets in their opening ten matches, until things fell apart in the final weeks of caretaker boss Steve Davis.

EVERTON

The poor attacks of Wolves and Southampton add potential to defensive names like James Tarkowski (£4.4m), Jordan Pickford (£4.5m) and Vitalii Mykolenko (£4.5m). Only 12 goals were conceded in their first 13 matches, yet having the second-highest total for expected goals conceded (xGC) suggests vast overachievement.

Super cheap full-back Nathan Patterson (£4.0m) might be worth having but forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m) is injury-prone and neither Anthony Gordon (£5.3m) nor Demarai Gray (£5.3m) is matching their decent underlying numbers.

Alex Iwobi (£5.6m) leads the way with one goal, five assists and 58 points.

ASTON VILLA

The Villans are the other team with the worst ‘best’ player, as goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez (£4.9m) joins Che Adams on 50 points.

Things have started well under new manager Unai Emery though, beating both Man United and Brighton and Hove Albion before this six-week break. Tyrone Mings (£4.3m) offers good defensive value once Gameweek 19 comes along, with attacking full-backs Matty Cash and Lucas Digne dropping to a brilliant £4.6m.

Every time that attacking midfielder Leon Bailey (£4.5m) seems to break into their starting XI, he then gets rotated. The Jamaican international scored in Emery’s first match, only to be benched the next week – although illness was thought to have played a part in that decision.

I don't feel SO dejacted by that loss last night because for once we went out and played decent football in a tournament against a top team (arguable played better too). Also we were never ahead. Maybe that makes a difference...

Not that that alone wins you anything, but it's been a good few years watching the National Squad. Lots of young talent in there for the next attempts too.

But again such fine fine margins... Not even mentioning the referee (who was absolute gash)...

1st France goal - should have been pulled back for a foul on Saka. It's the second sort of that 'tackle' where he's gone straight into his leg that is ridiculous.

2nd France goal - Giroud's header was going straight at Pickford if not for that flick onto Maguires head. Who knows if Pickford would have saved it but he had far more of a chance.

And just that 2nd Kane penalty... Wouldn't have bet on him of all people to miss. Having said that the pressure for both of those kicks was insane. Though he did really well on the first one given how long it took. Was more confident about the second yet...

Oh well back to FPL soon. Suffering from football fatigue, almost can't be bothered to set up my team again 😆

Look at the squad, dont you think England with this squad should win something or you accept that England dont belong to the biggest stage of international football with only 1 major title? Yes England plays good finally after 32 years of wait but a title should come soon

Maybe I'm just not cutthroat enough, but this line of reasoning seems a bit silly to me. Its not like winning the league across 38 matches - international tournaments like this are so much more prone to luck/variance, that you don't just win because you "deserve" it with a squad of a certain quality - there's always going to be teams capable of beating you on any given day. And when that happens it doesn't necessarily mean you "don't belong".

Well yes I think they can, but as I said it's incredibly fine margins.

Same for the other day with the Croatia/Brazil game. Brazil maybe could have won if not for a deflection too.

I am neutral. Ref was on Fra side, that is a fact. But England had everything in their hands and they couldnt progress. They played better and they had great oportunity to level game. I think that they lack strong mentality because of previous losses. (2018 sf loss, 2020 final loss)

Not sure how you've read into this as me being biased. I said the ref was crap (he was) but barely touched on him.

I said the foul on Saka should have been called (it should have).

Beyond that all I've said is we got unlucky with fine margins and "not that that alone wins you anything.

At the end of the day France were clinical with the few chances they did have. Just really honed in on not being too gutted because we played well and it came down to fine margins?

Seems like instead of reading what I've said you're projecting a narrative I wasn't trying to make.

          Hi Hazz
Agree with everything you have said about fine margins etc. One other point I would like to make is why was Saka replaced on about 79 minutes when he was causing France so much trouble? Was he injured?

Hope you soon get your enthusiasm back for FPL. If so why not join my Half Season Sprint League which commences in week 20. Other leagues are available. Ha Ha.

Can only think Saka was gassed or wanted fresher legs. Agree it was a shame he was subbed off.

And thanks, comment on FPL was more in jest. I'll be in when it's back but I'll join regardless.

      England played great

It was the best game of the Cup. Instant Classic.

France is so good, the opponents need to play near perfect. And the French National Team is getting better. In the Pro Youth Tournament in Toulon, they were destroying people.

France is so deep, they are staffing and developing players for multiple African nations.

Any Utd fans, do you think Rashford and Martial are nailed ? Antony/Garnacho also there for the 3rd spot in attack. Maybe both Garnacho and Antony start with Rashford ST and Martial out?

They're pretty nailed yeah. Ten Hag prefers Martial to Rashford at ST. So he's more nailed than Rashford imo.

But I don't think Garnacho starts much yet. So Rashford should be okay too. Why do u want double United attack is the real question tho? Risky move.

Aright thanks. The first 3 fixtures are great, I surely want Rashford but i also like Martial a lot especially for the 2 home games against Forest and Bournemouth. But yes there are other options like Nketiah Mitro Wilson also good for Martial spot so im not sure

You'd want Mitro for the double in 19 wouldn't u? So picking for 17 and 18 only makes Martial a good option. But u could also just start with Mitro.

Yes if I don’t go Kane then maybe I go both but Mitro seems the best choice atm, also fancy a punt on 4.3 Garnacho for the bench just in case he becomes a starter

It’s the “he’ll almost certainly be first choice” that kills me.

He’s probably the best attacker in the world. He starts first choice for every team on the planet without a second thought.

England fans need to accept reality in that Southgate has never beaten a team ranked higher at a major competition. This is an obvious sign that he doesn't have the tactical ability to win at the highest level.

The vast improvement in England performances has come down to 10 years of FA development in youth players. One of their goals was to improve homegrown players and make England more competitive at International level. You can read about this in the link below.

    https://www.premierleague.com/news/2911912

Fans need to thank the FA for making English players more technical and take off the Southgate glasses. This is the best technical team in English history.
England looked better on the ball than France but were beaten due to poor tactics and lack of creativity. That's not the players fault.

All the teams who have played high possession football have gone out of the WC which includes England. Southgate persisted with this tactic which only worked against Iran. Most of England's goals came from when they were pressed back in their own half and scored on the counter.

England didn't have the coaching or creative players for playing high possession football. The players had no space to run into like against Wales and Senegal and therefore couldn't score from open play against France.

If England can get to a QFs with a manager who couldn't get a job in the EPL, then imagine how far they'd get with a top coach?

      1. Kane is not WC winner striker material. Lack of pace.
      2. Set piece takers needed. How tf letting shaw and rashford take set piece when you have Trippier and Maddison on bench.
      3. Clown coach didnt take note on point 1 and 2

        1. Rubbish. Does Giroud have blinding pace at his age? Our wingers have pace and we know how deadly Kane can be in supplying those. It's fair that maybe he's not in the box as much as he could be but he did on a few occasions yesterday.

        2. Sort of. We do lack specialists but our current crop certain can whip in some good balls. It's worth remembering that James was injured, Trippier/Trent were on the bench and Maddison hasn't played a second. The talent is there - just not being used (rightly or wrongly).

        3. Dumb comment.

Kane is a lot younger and faster than Giroud, and France are good bet to win the WC.

So your whole thesis falls apart right there.

It Is time Southgate is replaced. He has ultimately taken England back to our natural water level: comfortably capable in beating lesser ranked sides, but also short against top tier opposition.

He's done an excellent job, but he has been benefitted by kind draws and the dysfunctional period between 08-16 where we struggled against the likes of Algeria, Costa Rica and Iceland.

Let's get a manager in to put to bed the question of whether the players are actually good enough.

        Name a realistic replacement?

Howe or Potter are the only two real options and neither will be available for a while. England don’t want another failed foreign appointment.

        There’s nobody else.

The foreign managers failed because they came from possession based leagues that required technical players to fit their system.

England didn't have good technical players who could pass and keep possession.

That problem has been fixed by the FA who now develop technical players and have moved away from kick and rush football.

England are now improving at International level across all age groups. All England coaches are seeing improvements but the media only talks about Southgate.

We're still coming up short on this. There's a bit of Emperor's New Clothes with this. However, we certainly have improved and the other nations are actually falling behind. Once the last drops of this generation across the board have been squeezed, there could be another shift in England's favour. Sadly, even that won't be enough.

Johann Cruyff tried to spell it out for us at Euro 2000: "you guys must learn to pass the ball to one another".

Not convinced on Howe or Potter for England tbh. Bit over simplistic to highlight those two as well when Southgate's CV consisted of a sacking at Boro.

My honest opinion is that England's problems are deep rooted, rather than it being a case of all the blame solely lying with Southgate. Replacing Southgate may improve things to a point, but I'm not convinced we have anything near the personnel required to overcome top tier opposition and then by extension actually win these competitions.

My main argument is to replace Southgate to highlight this. Atm, the main argument is that this is another Golden Generation let down by management, when the inconvenient reality is that we're not good enough and haven't been either side of '66. We get a crack at this tournament football every two years and we always find some way of losing out. It's one thing to fail in finding solutions, it's another to be in utter denial of the problem.

      What improvement though?

      Last 3 comps

      WC 2018
      Tunisia w, Panama w, Belgium L, Columbia W(pens), Sweden W, Croatia L

      Euro 2020
      Croatia W, Scotland D, Czech W, Germany W, Ukraine W, Denmark W, Italy L

      WC 2022
      Iran W, USA D, Wales W, Senegal W, France L

They have had a dream of a run compared to most teams and bar Germany, who have been in decline a while. They have lost when they met one of the big teams. With a couple of draws Vs poor teams thrown in

It's no use trying to reason, PH. Our Anglocentric outlooks can't get beyond that the PL is not the be and end all and just because you're an excellent prospect in the PL doesn't mean you then dominate international football.

Yes England always lose when they face big teams in knockout fixtures on foreign soil. Against nations that have won the WC England are now 0 wins and 11 defeats in knockout fixtures at major tournaments on foreign soil (WC, European Champions/Euros), but 4 wins and 2 defeats both on penalties at home.

England have to be very careful with who will be their next manager.

Southgate is risk averse as a manager, but he has created a culture of inclusivity, togetherness and teamwork. That is something England have not had for decades, even when the golden generation of Gerrard, Lampard, Owen, Rooney, J Cole, A Cole etc. were together.

That culture has been instrumental in allowing the younger players (Rashford, Foden, Bellingham, Rice, Saka) to flourish without taking away from the senior players. With that culture, England finally managed to beat a good team in Germany at the Euros - something not achieved since Argentina were beaten in 2002.

Appointing a Poch or Mourinho could destroy that and send England back to step 2 and 3 of 6 (see my post here: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2022/12/10/morocco-and-france-wins-shrink-midfield-options/?hc_page=1&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_25519788)

I would prefer Southgate to continue, but he could use a consultant, perhaps someone like Gary Neville, to encourage a bit more risk-taking in games.

Oh well, I did have a decent OR of 1.7k in the official FIFA game before last night, then due to being busy with other things I managed to forget to sub in a few of my France & England players last night and also forgot to use my remaining 3 transfers for the semi-finals!! On the slide we go!! I guess I'll just get 11 out for this matchday now for a -6?! Do we think that getting a full squad of 15 for MD6 for a -18 is blatantly too much or might that be the better option? Mmm? Just hoping my mistake hasn't cost me my cash league?! Am still in 1st but now praying my 2 closest rivals don't still have their wildcards left?!

    A - Get 11 out for a -6?
    B - Get a full squad of 15 for a -18?

    Thanks.

I guess I will just have to ignore Croatia & Morocco players then and hope that the favourites in each fixture do their thing?! Will have to bring 3rd place play-off players in, and get a full 15 squad back again, using the 6 transfers allocated for MD7? Am playing my Power Captain then, so obviously I could really do with a full squad for that?! My cash league could now go to the wire when perhaps it didn't have to?! Aargh...what a mistake-a ta make-a?!

You don't have to decide the number between 11 and 15 right now. Remember its not FPL, you can break the transfers down game-by-game and decide how many subs/hits you need after the first SF is over depending on how many blanks you get

Under-the-radar FPL options for the restart:

Afternoon everyone. I’m trying to get the quarter-final blues out of my system with a discussion on fantasy options who we may be overlooking for gw17. Please feel free to chip-in with your thoughts.

    GK: Mendy £4.8m
I really like Chelsea’s clean sheet potential between 17 and 29. Yes they’ve struggled for shut-outs this season but with Fofana and James now back in training I’m looking to back their defensive assets. While all the talk is of Kepa and Ward as being the template picks from gw17, Kepa is still injured and not training with the main squad atm. I think Mendy - who started the last 3 PL games and is back from World Cup duties looks outstanding value at £4.8m

    Mid: Summerville £4.4m
Sensational form in Leeds’ last 4 PL games - scoring in each one of them. Rodrigo’s form has also been outstanding this season but the £1.9m saving over his club mate could swing it his way in our squads especially with those on a ‘threemium’ strategy.

    For: Adams £6.4m
Played havoc with Liverpool’s defence in gw 16 and looks ideally suited to capitalise on his new manager’s more direct style. Southampton’s fixtures look very appealing too over the long-run.

Meant to add Laporte to the list. At 5.8m, his potential at both ends of the pitch should not be understated. He’ll need PL games under his belt too with Ciy likely to go deep in the UCL.

oh Summerville i totally forgot about him, Mendy i have my doubts about as i think he gets dropped when Kepa is fit, i've just brought in Broja from Chelsea, he's not nailed obviously but he has 2 nice fixtures then a dgw, i feel he's worth a punt at 5.3 with Auba being underwhelming, Halland, Broja, Nketiah frontline, KDB, Bruno Salah Almiron mid 😎

Summerville is almost a lock for me. The Mendy/Kepa thing stinks. Mendy isn’t all that good, so I still expect Kepa to get right back in when he’s fit.

Adams - interesting to look into. Have never imagined a Saints attacker in my team.

The City defense is just so tough. Akanji has been amazing, and so too Ake. Stones is back looking great, not to mention Dias. So so many good defenders there - it’s unfair really.

Well my decision boiled down to 3 main points

        1. 2 budget midfielders offer the best fodder which will hopefully prevent an early wildcard

        2. Of the existing players above, who is 1) the cash cow 2) worthy of going without (or I feel confident with getting rid)

        3. Rashford fixtures are good, but does he always get the returns? I’d argue, no. He isn’t a elite finisher

I like your reasoning. I read in an article here on FFS that Leon Bailey could be an even better option than Pereira if he can nail his spot down under Emery. He’s £0.1m cheaper too.

I do like Bailey. I’d rather wait on him and see if he’s nailed. His benching GW16 makes me uneasy, despite it seemingly because he was ill. Andreas also has the double which makes him a no-brainer.
