FPL review: Martial injury latest, Bruno on pens?

The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from two of Saturday’s Premier League fixtures are discussed in our latest Scout Notes article.

Manchester United v Crystal Palace and Newcastle United v West Ham United are the games in question.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture this season.

FERNANDES ON PENS?

One of the most-asked questions of the week concerned who was first on penalties at Manchester United, and we got an answer on Saturday afternoon – we think!

As called by Lateriser in his article earlier this week, it was Bruno Fernandes (£9.9m) who stepped up from the spot to convert after the Red Devils were awarded a seventh-minute spot-kick at Old Trafford.

That was the first time that the Portugal international had scored from the spot since 2020/21.

This was the fourth penalty United have been given this season, and there have been four different takers:

TakerWon byWho else was on the fieldWho wasn’t on the fieldResult
Europa League group stage (Sep 15)RonaldoDalotFernandesRashford, MartialScored
Gameweek 9 (Oct 2)MartialMartialFernandesRashfordScored
FA Cup third round (Jan 6)RashfordGarnachoFernandesMartialScored
Gameweek 22 (Feb 4)FernandesRashford (for handball)RashfordMartialScored

So Anthony Martial (£6.5m) is the only current United penalty-taker who hasn’t been on the field for any of the other spot-kicks that he didn’t take. He did, however, win that Gameweek 9 penalty himself and immediately grabbed the ball.

Getting him on the pitch (more of which below) is another matter altogether, of course.

Fernandes and Marcus Rashford (£7.2m) have each taken a penalty when the other has been on the field but, as Lateriser discussed in his article, there may have been a charitable reason why Fernandes relinquished those duties in the FA Cup third round.

MARTIAL INJURY LATEST, CASEMIRO BANNED

Martial was – surprise, surprise – absent from the United squad on Saturday afternoon, with another injury keeping him out of action.

There was no mention of him in the post-match presser but before kick-off, Erik ten Hag said of the Frenchman:

“He had a setback from the game when he returned. He thought he could build up, but he dropped a little bit back. We have to wait, we have to be patient not to force it.” – Erik ten Hag on Anthony Martial

Casemiro (£4.9m), transferred in by over 100,000 FPL managers ahead of Friday’s deadline, will now be missing for the next three games, keeping him out of league action until Gameweek 26.

The midfielder was sent off for violent conduct midway through the second half of the win over Palace, with United going on to lose their clean sheet.

The shut-out prospects of Luke Shaw (£5.2m) and co may take a bit of dent with the Brazilian spoiler out. First for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBIs) and second for successful tackles among midfielders since his Gameweek 10 full debut, we saw how open United were at Arsenal last week in his absence.

Marcel Sabitzer (£5.0m) at least looked promising on his own Red Devils bow as a late substitute.

RASHFORD TRIPLE CAPTAINCY

Above: Effective ownership stats for United players by rank tier

Over 550,000 FPL managers made Rashford their Triple Captain in this Gameweek; that’s over 100k more than backed Erling Haaland (£12.2m) in Double Gameweek 20.

Over one in five (21.55%) of the top 100,000 FPL managers used this chip on Rashford.

It’s already advantage Rashford backers with half of Double Gameweek 22 still to go, with his current tally of 12 points four more than what Haaland managed in Gameweek 20.

The Palace game panned out as the underlying stats form guide suggested it would: Rashford betters every single other FPL asset for goal attempts (seven) in Gameweek 22 so far, while Fernandes is joint-top for chances created (four). Doubters of the Portuguese midfielder can claim a hollow moral victory while licking their wounds: outside of his early penalty, he didn’t have a single shot all game. ‘Penandes’, indeed.

GORDON’S ALIVE?

Newcastle United conceded their first league goal in three months as West Ham United gained a deserved point on Tyneside thanks to Lucas Paqueta‘s (£5.9m) strike. Kieran Trippier (£6.1m) blanked at home for the first time in over a year as a result.

The absence of the banned Bruno Guimaraes (£5.6m) was lamented by Eddie Howe after the game:

“He’s our difference maker, he’s got that creative flair we possibly missed today.” – Eddie Howe on Bruno Guimaraes

It should be said, however, that Newcastle hadn’t scored a single goal with him on the pitch since Boxing Day. In fact, it could be argued that they missed him more defensively on Saturday.

From having a press-resistant, ball-retaining number six in Guimaraes and operating with a conservative left-winger – Joelinton (£5.9m) – to going with neither against West Ham, Newcastle did look a bit more open and were second best for much of the game.

Replacing Guimaraes in the starting XI, Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.1m) was barracked by some of the home support for his display. Over half of the big chances that the Magpies have conceded (14 of 25) in 2022/23 have come with the ‘luxury’ French winger in the starting line-up – and he’s only started five matches all season. A grossly unfair apportioning of blame, perhaps, but the personnel change did appear to affect Newcastle going in both directions.

While Saint-Maximin didn’t take his chance on a rare start, debutant Anthony Gordon (£5.2m) certainly made the most of his second-half cameo with a lively display. Barely any FPL manager will be bringing in a Newcastle asset now given the upcoming blank in Gameweek 25 but Gordon is one to monitor for Gameweek 27 onwards, given his bargain price.

“I’m really pleased with his debut. Teams when they play us now will make it difficult for us, The onus is on us to break teams down.” – Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon

Callum Wilson (£7.1m), temporarily deprived of competition due to an Alexander Isak (£6.6m) concussion, put Newcastle 1-0 up but there was another blank for the quiet Miguel Almiron (£5.7m). This was Almiron’s second-lowest xGI total of the season (0.05) and he’s not had a single big chance since Gameweek 17 – although he was admittedly centrimetres away from claiming an early assist for Joe Willock (£4.7m), only for VAR to spot that the ball had crept out of play.

More FPL sales will justifiably follow this week but the next two fixtures, against Bournemouth and leaky Liverpool, may be enough to persuade his remaining owners to keep whatever faith still exists.

Above: Premier League teams sorted by mins per expected goals conceded (xGC) in 2022/23

Every season there’s a team (usually Brighton) who look great on the underlying stats front but who don’t translate that into FPL returns.

West Ham are a bit like that in 2022/23. Only four sides have conceded fewer goals than the Hammers (who are also fourth for xGC, above), yet only Southampton (one) have kept fewer clean sheets than David Moyes’s side (four).

The recent return to fitness of Nayef Aguerd (£4.8m) could be key on the shut-out front, with the Moroccan absolutely superb on Tyneside – as was midfield shield Declan Rice (£4.7m).

Moyes mostly going with a more conservative shape (a wing-back system) in the last month also perhaps bodes well for future clean sheets. Budget FPL defenders Emerson Palmieri (£4.0m) and Vladimir Coufal (£4.1m) stand to benefit from this tactical set-up, each starting again here.

“They’re a big, big side. They can put the ball on top of you when they don’t go round you. Nayef had a brilliant tackle. Part of your job is to defend well and we did defend well today.” – David Moyes

Just to make sure if I’m seeing this correctly, do I have eight players here for GW 25?

    Ederson*
    Shaw - Trippier - White*
    March - Saka* - Rashford - Odegaard* - Bruno
    Kane* - Haaland*
    ______________________________________
    Kepa: Gnonto*: Schar: Aurier*

If so, then doing March + Schar > Mahrez + Moreno would make it 10.
That’ll be enough for the blank wouldn’t you think?
Feel like I’ve got away with this somewhat with WC’ing early in GW21

    Help appreciated as always.

I might consider Bruno to an Arsenal midfielder, if only because you'll get 2 extra games between now and 25 from him. Otherwise would hold.

      A couple of thoughts:
First, I'd get another midfielder in your starting lineup, as opposed to all those defenders. I tend to think 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 are the best set-ups right now.
Second, if you can afford it Martial to Nketiah for sure, and then Almiron to Saka.

    Kepa (Ward)
    Trippier, Shaw, Botman (Bueno, Patterson)
    Rashford, Bruno, Odegaard, Martinelli (Almiron)
    Haaland, Kane, Nketiah

Planning for DGW23 and Blank25 (gotta move out Patterson, Almiron, Bruno, Botman):
    A) Botman + Bruno = Ake + KDB
    B) Bruno + Martinelli + Almiron = KDB + Saka + Bailey

I think using the WC for this upcoming GW is very underrated. However if you're able to field 6 DGW23 players (Arsenal 3 Mancity 3) and navigate BGW25 with a full 11, then perhaps this does not apply to you.

Using a WC to set yourself up for the next 7/8 GWs while using the FTs accrued over the weeks can help you navigate the opportunity to use bb (if still have it) on DGW players and future DGW/BGWs. It can also save you a few -4's if you were planning to take them between now and BGW25 (I know I was). This is my WC going into next GW with the goal of hopefully setting myself up nicely for the next 7/8 GWs as previously mentioned.

    Kepa Ward
    Akanji Gabriel Shaw Trips Tarkowski
    Mahrez Saka Odegaard Rashy Mitoma
    Mitro Haaland Kane

This leaves me with 3.3mill left ITB, so plenty to play with.

    Few notes:
    - Akanji is most nailed city def imo as he's played every city game bar 1 where he played 45 mins.
    - Bueno was benched today so I think he's on the way out of people's teams which is concerning with BGW25 coming.
    - Mitro is a nice differential with the next 3 being (NFO, bha, WOL).
    - Tarkowski has a decent fixture to AVL for BGW 25. Also think Everton will do well with Dyche ball in full effect hah. Either way low risk high reward move.

I'm sorta waiting to make the move after blank28. Would basically dead-end into that week, and then switch out with a wildcard. Just a thought.

Good points, but one question: why Ward on a wildcard? You have the funds for Kepa + Raya, which covers blanks and doubles with two of the best keepers in the game atm

Agree with the rest, although I'd probably take Ake over Akanji due to the (possibly unrealistic) fear of Dias and the eventual return of Stones

      1. Scalper
        • 7 Years
        1 year, 3 months ago

I don't see myself using Raya often if at all considering he's blanking in 25 as well. 0.7mill is a lot to bench imo but you're right he could be better some weeks than kepa.

As for Akanji, it's a toss up for me. Going back and forth between him and Ake. Only pep knows!

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          1 year, 3 months ago

My reasoning is that you don't really need the funds, so it makes sense to have a better asset

Raya will have DGWs pop up now and then. This is what I meant by "the combo covers blanks and doubles": Raya will be good for a BB (possibly BB29), and then he'll have other DGWs in weeks where Kepa will have a single game, while Kepa isn't going to have a blank week anytime soon. Best of both worlds, as these are two of the best keepers in the game

Not suggesting a rotation. Just that it's better than killing the spot with Ward, like how you have good assets in your outfield bench

Didn’t realise I could trade Andreas/Martinelli to Saka/Odegaard (Son of Aeroguard). But had to do it before the price changes, so I did. Early trades always work out for the best and mine team looks very handsome:

    Trippier/Gabriel/Akanji
    Rashford/Saka/KDB/Bruno/Odegaard
    Wilson/Haaland

    Ward/Shaw/Gnonto/Patterson

I'd play Mitoma over Mitro, for starters

Wouldn't bench boost with Bueno and a transfer needed to replace Patterson. That's a sign of a bench that can wait some more

A or roll, imo. If you're that cold on Martinelli, hold Bruno and switch Mart to Mahrez instead, Bruno isn't a priority exit vs Leeds and Leicester

Mitoma is on form, but I think you have to start Mitrovic at home to NFO if you have him. Agree on delaying the BB though.

I’m likely to want triple MCY/ARS this week, which leans me towards A). Possibly even F) Bruno & Martinelli -> Saka & Mahrez (-4) as I do fear that Martinelli’s minutes will be managed.

        Kepa Sanchez
        James Chilwell Shaw White Trippier
        Maddison Mitoma Rashford (VC)Odegaard Saka
        (C)Haaland Kane Mitrovic

Dropping this as another anchor. No hits. Gotta stay disciplined for this one

Not rushing for James or Chilwell, mind. Gonna give 'em time to settle into playing regularly, or I'll go for alternatives (Schar, Mee, Porro, Moreno, Ream, T.Silva or Badiashile) if they don't look reliable

It’ll be good to see how the likes of Joao Felix and Madueke get on at Chelsea before then. Think if they’re both nailed, I’d prefer 1 of them over double def.

            Thanks a lot

It's just hard to drop anybody from my midfield, especially since Chelsea attackers will always have some rotation risk under Potter

With the full-backs, I expect more of minute-management than what Potter's currently doing in his attack. So if James or Chilwell gets subbed or doesn't start, I'll be more inclined to think it's because they're still not fully fit than because Potter wants to try another fullback

It's quite possible that an attacker forces his way in, of course. Lots of time to monitor

            Should be fun 🙂

            Fixtures and explosive potential

I explained the Chelsea defs in the last paragraph. If they're fit and firing, I consider them to be at Trippier's level for points potential. If they're not fit or Chelsea stumbles again, I'll go for one/two of the listed alternatives

Maddison picked up right where he left off when he returned from injury. I'll get him in GW26 or BGW28, for Mahrez. He's fixture-proof, yet the fixtures are great. Very high potential for the rest of the season. Might even be back in the template before I buy him

Mitrovic is spearheading a team full of confidence and riding high in the table, facing Wolves in GW25, then Liverpool and Bournemouth in 28 and 29. The trick here is: if the Liverpool game is shifted, it'll become a DGW with Bournemouth. So I'll either have a good BGW28 striker with one nice fixture on BB29, or a good BB29 striker with two good fixtures and a GW28 blank (which I can handle)

              Nice.

Chelsea defs have been doing well, They just have so many I'm not sure how to choose. Buying James in a couple weeks sounds reasonable

Big fan of Maddison too but whens the right time. his fixtures aren't that great GW27-29 CHE bre cry. Better run from GW 32 on?

Mitro I hadn't considered going back to. Was thinking Watkins in GW25 and swap to Jesus once he's back fit.

                Thanks 🙂

I can rotate Maddison, actually. I consider him fixture-proof, so it's hard for me to see any of his fixtures as bad, especially if he'll play in BGW28 and get a Palace + Villa double in 29. Could be Mudryk + Porro instead of Maddison + Chiwell, so those two spots are up for grabs

Mitro's just had 3 tough games, so I don't want to judge him based on them. I have triple Arsenal so I'm avoiding the Nketiah-Jesus headache for now. Watkins crossed my mind, but I find it hard to trust him over Mitro, especially with Mitro's fixtures

After Wolves' 3-0 result against Liverpool, is Bueno's place in the starting line-up under serious threat?
Knew I should have BB a few weeks ago when I had 15 regular starters and bench was getting 18-20pts, rather than having to now make a transfer first to guarantee fifteen starters.

I'd take this as an opportunity for squad improvement with future transfers, then delay the BB for DGW29

Imagine you hit the BB right when he got dropped. You've dodged a bullet, imo. There are nailed players you can get now, some from even Wolves themselves

How many teams expected to double, or rather how many teams with decent FPL assets are likely to double in gw29?

              Nothing's guaranteed

It's a free midweek (no Europe, Cup, Cup replays or internationals), so many of the already pending fixtures might end up there. Especially those involved in Europe and the cups

AFAIK, almost any team you see with a pending fixture can have a double in GW29. It'll then depend on TV schedules and the usual powers that be, or if the pending fixture is cleared beforehand with an earlier double

Unfortunately it will probably eat up a couple of transfers just to strengthen the bench for that one week only. That is the trade-off for waiting for a 'better' week if you had a current bench that was strong.

        Same question, different timezone.

        A) save FT
        B) Martinelli ➝ Odegaard
        C) Patterson ➝ James (and bench boost)
        D) both B and C for (-4)

        Kepa // Ward
Trippier, Botman, Shaw // Martinez, Patterson*
        Saka², Martinelli², KDB², Mahrez², Rashford
        Haaland² (c), Nketiah² // Mitrovic

Given your team and the amount of DGWs I would save. Definitely not C, James still easing back in and was subbed early.

        Already have Odegard and Zinchenko.

        A. Almiron to Saka
        B. Greenwood to Nketiah

B gives me better bench with Almiron who I can turn into Baily in BGW 25.

Morning IFT, no sure if I should roll, or bring in a another City Ake / KDB

Or perhaps Marti to Odegaard / Saka

        Kepa / Ward

        Trippier / Schar / Shaw / White / Bueno

        Bruno / Rashford / Mahrez / Martinelli / Mitoma

        Kane / Haaland / Nketiah

        Thanks

I’d do Bruno to KDB, as should be nailed for both. City def is a bit of a gamble, but Ake or Akanji seem fairly nailed.
Bit of a benching headache with KDB though.

And yes, seems marti is the wrong arsenal mid to own so him to Odegaard/Saka also not a bad idea.

        Hey DZ
Is it worth a hit to bin Walker for Ake/Akanji for DGW23?

        1. NATSTER
          • 13 Years

I don't think so as Akanji will mainly rely on CS points and no MCI DF seems nailed to start.

Then just need to decide whether to even start Walker and hope he plays (and inevitably get a 1 pointer cameo)

If I would bet, it has to be Ake and some hope for attacking points.

It can be seen as investment for long-term with DGW to fund it.

TC has always been better for me, but I never have luck with BB.
20 points would be considered a good BB, whereas TC last season on Salah got an extra 28 pts from memory (84 total)

        Morning all

        Bruno >kdb

Both the players in the first move have still got a match each to play this week so I'd rather entertain that question afterwards.

Long term I prefer Toney, but yeah Nketiah has a couple more fixtures, provided Jesus doesn't return by gw25.

Yeah that's the 2nd extra fixture I mentioned. Personally I may just play Haaland and Kane up front GW25 and strengthen defence/midfield instead.

Actually quite frustrated also with toney...2 point only for two games...another option beside nketiah is mitrovic..good fixtures..nfo next..but no dgw

        Haaland Kane

Ward, Shaw, Gnonto, Bueno (1FT, 0.0 itb)

Not sure what to do here...don't wanna take a hit and already have triple City and Arsenal. Have no money to spend so the only move I can really do is KDB to Mahrez or downgrade Bruno. Save transfer and reassess in gw24?
