The Digest – Gameweek 31

We check in with Gameweek 31 for the last time now, assessing the latest player, team and talking point to catch our attention.

Mohamed Salah’s relentless quest for Fantasy Premier League points gathers pace as Liverpool’s form has many thinking twice over parting company with their key assets.

Meanwhile, we offer our final word on the Gameweek 31 Free Hit chip in light of Saturday’s reduced set of fixtures.

The Player

So much Fantasy faith was pinned on Mohamed Salah and Liverpool’s attack to deliver over Gameweek 31’s four matches.

Yet even the Egyptian managed to surpass our lofty expectations with an extraordinary display against Javi Gracia’s hapless Watford.

A sublime first season at Anfield stepped into the realms of the ridiculous as Salah ran riot against the Hornets, delivering a season-high tally of 29 points thanks to four goals and an assist.

With seven Gameweeks remaining, his tally of 266 points has already surpassed last season’s top scoring player, Alexis Sanchez, who returned 264 points in his final full campaign at Arsenal.

That’s better than Riyad Mahrez’s 240 points on his way to finishing first in Leicester’s title-winning 2015/16 campaign. It also eclipses the career-high tallies of the likes of Eden Hazard (233 points), Harry Kane (224 points) and Sergio Aguero (216 points).

One of only five players to produce more than 6.0 points per match (ppm) this term, Salah’s average of 8.9ppm is well clear of second-placed Aguero (7.0).

Indeed, with just one top-eight opponent remaining (cry eve BOU wba STO che BHA), the only surprise would now be if he fails to add to his 14 sets of double-digits and breach the 300-point mark come the end of the campaign.

The Team

After suffering a 2-1 loss at Old Trafford, Liverpool bounced back emphatically to help FPL managers to a bumper Gameweek.

The 5-0 victory over Watford also saw Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino in the points again, while at the back, the Reds delivered a thirteenth clean sheet of the campaign – just two less than the best defences, Man United and City, with fifteen apiece.

At a point when many are now eyeing up Wildcards to profit from the impending double Gameweeks, Salah’s ability to score big – and consistently do so – now surely makes him undroppable, regardless of the Reds’ lack of a double Gameweek.

Although many are keen to show Mane and Firmino the door, Klopp’s side served a timely reminder that getting rid doesn’t come without risk.

Saturday’s romp now means that Liverpool have scored three or more goals on 15 occasions – seven times at home and eight away showcases their consistency.

Firmino, meanwhile, has earned bonus in 11 of the 12 league matches he has scored in. As well as firing a hat-trick past Porto in the Champions League, Mane has hit his most consistency Fantasy form of the season, producing points in each of the last four Gameweeks.

Should Klopp’s men continue to rack up the goals and buck the growing exodus, those without Wildcards could profit if they keep faith in the Reds’ front three for those favourable remaining matches.

The Talking Point

This season’s first set of Gameweek postponements persuaded many – almost half a million managers – to unleash their Free Hit chip for Gameweek 31.

Although just four matches took place, Salah’s huge haul helped Free Hit chip managers average a hefty 95.5 points, gaining just over a 25-point margin on their rivals (70.1).

However, that margin could, and should, have been greater – only 80.6% of them decided to captain Salah.

On Sunday, Ragabolly’s look into the impact of the Gameweek 31 Free Hit chip also pointed out that planning for this round of fixtures cost, on average, a further three points for rivals.

Essentially, then, over 444,000 FPL managers chose the Free Hit chip as a means of navigating Gameweek 31’s four matches, with a lofty 94.7% earning a climb in ranking.

While that clearly can be chalked up as an undoubted success, it’s also worth pointing out that, despite just four fixtures taking place, Salah was the only player in the most transferred in XI for Gameweek 31 to claim double-digits.

Six others – James Tomkins, Andrew Robertson, Junior Stanislas, Jordon Ibe, Luka Milivojevic and Cenk Tosun – achieved this but were largely ignored.

Granted, while Stanislas and Tosun both went into the weekend in fine form, the likes of Tomkins, Robertson, Ibe and Milivojevic all chose the perfect time to deliver season-high returns.

While that only serves to highlight the unpredictability of such occasions, it’s worth bearing in mind that Liverpool were the only top-eight team in action in Gameweek 31.

Those retaining Free Hit chips will be hoping that Gameweek 35 is a little easier to pinpoint the key names and big scorers, with the Merseysiders, Man City and Arsenal all set for favourable fixtures in the six-match slate.

I made a separate team in gameweek 12 to see if I could do any better than my own team.
In this second team I spend very little time planning, possibly 5 minutes of transfers per week if that, and have even pressed auto fill on my transfers some weeks.

My 'second team' currently is languishing a mere 6 points behind my actual team during this time period.

This team also has all chips still available and has chosen very wisely to activate the wildcard this week.

I have no doubt my second team will pull out victorious this season potentially by a large margin...

This goes to show that by overthinking and doing extra analysis of my team I have gained roughly 6 points this season and would have done just as well devoting far less of my spare time to FPL.

    RIP

I don't see the issue with activating my WC without knowing when the specific DGW fixtures will be played. While it would certainly help, I know what fixtures are still to be played and can select my WC team accordingly. We still get one FT a week and I am avoiding teams like Swansea and Lei***ter like the plague (with the exception of enablers like Andy King and Chilwell)

The only reason I want the fixtures to be announced asap is to stop the flow of "when will the DGW fixtures be announced?" comments on here 😉

Question for those with Triple Captain and Bench Boost.

BB on the GW with more DGW fixtures and TC on the other is "received wisdom" (read: FFS groupthink).

For me, TC is more valuable so will look for the premium player with the best DGW and he will get TC. BB can be used on the other (or, god forbid, a non-DGW!)

was initially going salah but not a great fan of having my captain playing the early game so more than likely go auba not getting kaku until dgw

Anybody know or care to guess what price Salah was to be top goal scorer at the start of the season?

so the most FPL points in a season is hold by Suarez with 295 points right?
Salah only need 30 points to break the record. Lucky for those who own him from week 1 and captaining him for many times.

Right. Suarez also missed quite a few games that season due to a ban.

      Rotation risks:

      Pope
      Monreal
      Willian

Would try to limit it to one rotation risk on WC if I'm honest (I have gone Willian)

    WC Draft:

    de gea - fabianski
    baily - otamendi - davies - robertson - ward
    son - salah - mcarthur - willian - mahrez
    lukaku - barnes - firmino

    Bank: 0.2

for GW35 in this way i have only 8 player --> out De Gea, Baily, davies, son, willian, mahrez, lukaku.
If i play the WC at GW32 i have 3 FT for play 11 at GW35, but without DGW is not easy to choose the next moves.

    WC is good?
I'm not sure if i need to prefer mahrez instead sterling, no defence from chelsea (to play 2 DGW)

    Currently on WC

    Will play 3-4-3 until DGW;

    Ederson(GW32) | Courtois (GW33)
    Monreal | Alonso | Mee
    Son | Salah | Willian | Mahrez
    Firmino | Auba | Vardy

Then will do 3 transfers (-4) at GW34
    Firmino, Vardy, Mee to Ayew, Lukaku, Jones/Smalling and will end up ;

    Ederson | Courtois
    Monreal | Smalling/Jones | Alonso | Van der Hoorn | Morgan
    Son | Salah | Willian | Mahrez | Ki
    Ayew | Lukaku | Auba

    Anything needs to be reconsidered?

    Thanks!

On WC and planning -4 is asking for trouble. Injuries or problems and you're looking a more hits..

Yes that is one risk I am taking but if it goes as planned, cannot think of any better plan compare to all WC teams mentioned here.

All the press making out like Southgate has a tough job picking England's best XI, not so imo. Reasonably straightforward I'd say.

    ------------------Pope
    Walker--Maguire--Smalling--Young
    ------------Wilshere---Dier
    Sterling---------Alli-----------Rashford
    ------------------Kane

Yes, either of them. Or Phil Jones (youo know, the guy who keeps Smalling out of his club side when fit). Hell pick Keane or Phil f**king Jags ahead of Mike Smalling!

Think Jones would be first choice if fit. Recall Southgate actually saying Jones is England's best defender

It really is. Personally I'd like to see Shelvey given a chance, he has something most of our options don't as well as a bit of aggression. CB there is nobody that looks good enough 😆 Such a shame we wasted the likes of Rio, Terry, Gerrard, Lampard, Scholars etc. 🙁

Another day, another WC team. I like this I think, comments appreciated.

    DDG / Fab
    Christensen - Monreal - Naughton - Lowton - Morgan
    Son - Willian - Salah - Mahrez - King
    Auba - Vardy - Lukaku

    0.0 itb

King a gamble I know, but frees up cash so worth it over Ki is my current thinking (Time will tell!)

I had Monreal but his minutes are a worry to me... thinking Mustafi is more nailed and is £0.1M cheaper... what’s your thoughts on this?

Arsenal have reverted to 4231 formation also someone was saying so this increases Monreals risk of rotation apparently....

I like it, but i have a doubt regarding vardy and upgrade defence.
i'm not sure the best solution is choose vardy instead barnes and upgrade morgan/naughton with Man United/City defender. for example otamendi or baily.

On WC. Have bench boost for dgw 34 and free hit for 35.

Which option is best and why?

    1. Smalling/Jones, Andy King and Lukaku
    2. Lowton, Willian and Firmino

Have Salah so keen on getting Lukaku instead of Firmino and options 2 allows this plus it allows me to upgrade a burnley defender to united defender. I lose Willian though.

    Cheers
