World Cup Transfer Tips: Semi-Finals – The Big Numbers

Just four teams remain at the 2018 World Cup after the culmination of the quarter-finals on Saturday evening.

Fantasy managers now only have players from France, Belgium, England and Croatia to choose from, with Uruguay, Brazil, Sweden and Russia assets surplus to requirements.

Those who are playing the McDonald’s FIFA World Cup game have five free transfers with which to shake up their squads, although Fantasy iTeam managers will have to make the most of their three allotted transactions (a fourth can be purchased with credits) if they are to field 11 playing assets at the semi-final stage.

Up to six players per country can be selected in our Fantasy squads at this point.

After their goals for Belgium and France in the two countries’ respective quarter-finals, Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) and Raphael Varane (£6.0m) are attracting the most investment in the McDonald’s FIFA game at this early stage.

With the likes of Neymar, Philippe Coutinho, Diego Godin and Andreas Granqvist to jettison from our teams, where should the money be reinvested? Our team-by-team analysis of Opta’s World Cup data, which is updated and available to Fantasy Football Scout members immediately after the end of each match, gives us strong clues as to which players’ underlying statistics could translate into Fantasy points and which assets are best avoided.

World Cup Data

We’re delighted to offer World Cup data as an early addition to our regular season offering to help those playing Fantasy games over the summer.

We’ve secured Opta data, not only for the tournament itself, which begins on June 14 but also from the Qualifying Rounds for Europe and South America and for international friendlies involving the participating nations. This includes all the matches played right up to the tournament kick-off.

Just to stress, this World Cup offering comes packaged with the regular Fantasy Football Scout membership.

Thoughts on going for a super strong 11 and using my free 2 free subs I dont need to downgrade my bench. This would mean having no subs. Would still have an 11 for the final as long as England dont go out.

The final round still includes all 4 teams, both matches 🙂 You only have to worry about rotation

What's your biggest flop team of the world cup?

    I've got:

    Muller - Lewandowski - Ozil
Khedira - Carlos Sanchez - Mascherano
    Tagliafico - Boateng - Pique - Kimmich
    Caballero
(Dis)honorable mentions: Higuain, Bernardo Silva, Otamendi, Hummels, De Gea

Kimmich probably doesn’t deserve a spot in this team and I’d put DDG in the starting 11 simply because the expectations of him were so high. Werner and Jesus have to slip in there somewhere

As you may have noticed, the price changes I predicted last round were not completely accurate. Although all predicted price rises did happen, there were many more players rising and less of them dropping.

This is because they lowered the values (points needed) for the changes. Cheaper players now only need 8 points in last two rounds to rise in price and at most 11 to rise for 0.2m. (11 and 15 before). Players also won't drop in price as long as they've got at least 3 points in last 2 rounds (4 before).
Becuase the pool of players is now rather small it's impossible to know exact values, so I can't be 100% sure for some of the players.

Of course they could lower the values again but since it's the last change and they're already so low I think it's unlikely. If it does happen however it will be like the previous round, more people rising and less dropping.

    France:

Rising: Lloris, Varane, Pavard(+0.2), Hernandez, Griezmann, Mbappe
Dropping: Nzonzi, Matuidi, Dembele, Fekir, Thauvin

    Belgium:

    Rising: Vertonghen, Fellaini, Chadli
    Possibly rising: De Bruyne
Dropping: Alderweireld, Vermaelen, Tielemans, Carrasco, Mertens

    England:

    Rising: Pickford(possibly +0.2), Stones, Trippier, Maguire(+0.2), Young(+0.2), Walker, Alli
    Possibly rising: Kane
    Dropping: Rose, Delph, Vardy, Rashford

    Croatia:

    Rising: Vida, Mandzukic
    Dropping: Corluka, Pivaric, Badelj, Kovacic

still, I wouldn't be comfortable relying on McCarthy to deliver points every week and if Forster gets back into the fold again then you'd be left in a sticky situation

I am also not confident on relying on Zaha + Tosun to both prove their value but I could be wrong

Warming towards 4-3-3 for the first few weeks... I think the abundance of good 4.5 Defs allows having one of those as you 11th player, rather than a 6.5 mid & leaves an extra bit of cash.

It’s all swings & roundabouts p, but the likes of Baines, Coleman, VVD, PVA also could form a lethal back 4 to match any 6.5 mids point for point

      1. Drexl Spivey
        • 5 Years

Warning in favour you mean? I'm going 4-3-3, specifically for Zaha & Cedric.

Yep warming infavour. I just want to have a killer back four of Baines, Coleman, PVA, VVD to see if it works out. The stars seem to have aligned for once barring injuries, they all have good fixtures & pretty nailed for the most part unless transfers go against them.

I have Josh King in the 3rd forward slot, need to find 0.5 from somewhere to leave ITB to upgrade King in case Zaha or Arnie do well, but hoping King scores in GW1 home to Cardiff while Zaha takes a few weeks to get going.

I also have PVA & Mili so hoping nay FK’s & Pens that Zaha wins benefit those two... triple Palace might yet be he way to go.

Why VVD over Robertson? I see why PVA is appealing but is he really worth 1.0 over Tomkins?

I've gone for Joe Ralls on pens for Cardiff (£5m) as my Milivojevic this year (so far). £6.5m just seems a little too steep for Mili, and a lot depends on pre-season, but for a 4th/5th mid slot he seems hard to ignore.

        trash bench ?

Kane and trippier unlikely to play the first game ?

Trippier would be rotating with Aurier again anyway. Not worth it regardless of the world cup, and even less so now.

This is primarily a FPL site, but I do admit that the player prices being released caught me by surprise. Starting on next season when this one hasn't finished doesn't feel right.

This is what it could look like if you spread the funds around for some longevity (late WC) and bench players based on fixtures:

      Bettinelli
      Alonso Azpi Coleman PvA
      Salah Mane Deulofeu
      Tosun Wood Zaha

      Fabianski | Mkhi, Ramsey, Bednarek

A stretch too far for many, maybe, but fixture-wise, this is fairly pleasing (besides Liverpool players: you can shift Mane on after 3-6 games if there's a better option).

Doesn't make sense to bench players solely based on fixtures imo

Not solely, otherwise I'd have put Bednarek 1st sub instead of 3rd 🙂

Tosun, Wood, Deulofeu all interesting selections. They are players I would never pick in a million years so they will probably do well. Alonso Azpi double up similar, could pay off massively.

I have PVA, Coleman, Mkhi, Salah all locked in currently, but going for VVD & Baines instead of Azpi/Alonso, and Firmino instead of Mané.

Then Mili, KDB, King, Zohore, Rallsinstead of Deulofeu, Tosun, Wood, Zaha, Ramsey

I'm thinking of aligning this team a bit more with you by switching Azpi and Mane out for Robertson and KDB. That way, if KDB gets a rest, there is a bench to cope, and besides KDB is better than Mane I think, and with better fixtures

Poor opening fixtures, Firmino is the same price

hmm yes the first 2 are hard, although I wouldn't be surprised if Arsenal scored a few against City on the opening GW of the season. I like Firmino as well, might pick both if they are convincing in pre season

towards the back end of last season he looked class, but went unnoticed to an extent. I'll obviously wait to see how Emery intends to use him

Also isn't nailed. Aubameyang could start ahead of him. Maybe it'll be Aubameyang on the wing and Lacazette up front but it's unknown as of now.

yeah that's the concern. Hopefully pre season gives a clearer picture, and Laca can nail down a striker role

It's basically the Salah/Firmino situation, where you're buying a Firmino who might not play half the games 🙁

I think he has to be considered better value than Auba. He’ll likely match Auba goal for goal as he’s such a greedy son of a b**tch, and also is a penalty hog.

Isn’t nailed. XI likely to be Leno, Bellerín, Sokratis, Mustafi, Monreal, Xhaka, Lucas Torreira, Ramsey, Özil, Mkhitaryan, Aubameyang.

          • 9 Years

hopefully Ozil is dropped from that, Mkhi gets the 10 role and Laca goes up top with Auba wide 😀 Ozil is pants nowadays

Mkhitaryan is awful and Lacazette is overrated. Özil walks into the XI when fit. Arsenal’s best player with Ramsey and Auba.

You need a premium defender I'd say.

        Giroud not nailed.

        Aguero not nailed.

Walcott, Lingard and Milivojevic midfield is very punty.

How’s this looking - kept 1.0 ITB for King either Zaha or Arnie etc depending on what happens in GW1:

        DDG
        PVA, VVD, Coleman, Baines,
        KDB, Salah, Mikhi, Mili
        Firmino, King
        (Hamer, Ralls, Zohore, Chalobah)

Torn between it and a 3-4-3 with a deeper bench:

            DDG
            VVD, Coleman, Kiko
            KDB, Salah, Mikhi, Mili
            Firmino, Zaha, Arnie
