Clues to Wolves and Man City rotation in Portugal draw

Friday evening’s international matches gave some indication of which players will be fresher than others for Double Gameweek 32.

A lot of the attention was on disappointing results for Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but we’ve looked deeper than the exploits of those worldwide superstars.

Euro 2020 qualifying

Portugal 0-0 Ukraine

  • Rui Patrício (£4.5m) – 90 minutes
  • Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) – 90 minutes
  • Oleksandr Zinchenko (£4.7m) – 90 minutes
  • Joao Moutinho (£5.3m) – 87 minutes
  • Rúben Neves (£4.9m) – 62 minutes
  • Diogo Jota (£6.1m) – 0 minutes

Portugal’s 0-0 draw with Ukraine held some clues to suggestions of rotation at Wolves in Double Gameweek 32, ahead of their FA Cup semi-final the following weekend.

Goalkeeper Rui Patrício (£4.5m) played the whole fixture, while Joao Moutinho (£5.3m) was involved for 87 minutes and Rúben Neves (£4.9m) was replaced in the 62nd minute.

Both central midfielders were rested the last time Nuno Espirito Santo rotated his side ahead of FA Cup action, so their heavy involvement for their countries could count against their hopes of two starts in Double Gameweek 32.

However, it was good news for Diogo Jota‘s (£6.1m) chances of significant minutes in the upcoming expanded round of fixtures. He was an unused substitute for Portugal after earning his first call-up to the senior side.

Manchester City options Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£4.7m) both played 90 minutes themselves in their countries’ first matches of the international break, the former on the right of an attacking front three.

With Riyad Mahrez (£8.2m) an unused substitute for Algeria and Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m) not on duty for Belgium but reportedly close to a return, Pep Guardiola will potentially have fresh options to rotate with Bernardo if he wishes. That may be important for him considering how busy Manchester City’s schedule is.

Albania 0-2 Turkey

  • Cenk Tosun (£6.4m) – 90 minutes
  • Caglar Söyüncü (£4.9m) – 0 minutes

Everton striker Cenk Tosun (£6.4m) had a productive evening against Albania on Friday as he played 90 minutes for Turkey, assisting Burak Yilmaz’s opening goal.

Meanwhile, Caglar Söyüncü (£4.9m) continues to be on the fringes of both Leicester City and his national side as he was an unused substitute.

Andorra 0-2 Iceland

  • Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m) – 90 minutes
  • Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m) – 83 minutes
  • Aron Gunnarsson (£4.4m) – 63 minutes

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m) got a full 90-minute outing in the number 10 role for Iceland on Friday night, although was not involved in either of their goals.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m), who is still rebuilding to full fitness at Burnley, featured for 83 minutes and will be hoping it helps him make a second consecutive league start in Double Gameweek 32.

Aron Gunnarsson (£4.4m), who recently returned to regular starting action for Cardiff, managed 63 minutes before being replaced.

Moldova 1-4 France

  • Hugo Lloris (£5.4m) – 90 minutes
  • N’Golo Kanté (£5.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Paul Pogba (£8.9m) – 90 minutes
  • Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) – 81 minutes

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) continued to prove he is ready to step into the lone centre-forward role if Maurizio Sarri requires his services. The Frenchman registered a goal in 81 minutes against Moldova. However, his chances of being involved in Double Gameweek 32 are of course affected by the fact that Gonzalo Higuaín (£9.6m) has not been on international duty with Argentina.

Meanwhile, Paul Pogba (£8.9m) also got himself assist playing, as he usually does with France, in the deeper midfield pair of a 4-2-3-1 formation. That’s the preferred position of compatriot N’Golo Kanté (£5.0m), who has been playing much further forward for Chelsea this season but got 90 minutes alongside Pogba against Moldova.

Everton defender Lucas Digne (£5.2m) was an unused substitute for France but appeared to pull out the squad on Saturday after reports of an injury. That should see him miss Monday’s clash with Sigurdsson’s Iceland.

“Very happy with yesterday’s result but disappointed not to be able to continue on this gathering.” – Lucas Digne

International friendlies

Argentina 1-3 Venezuela

  • Juan Foyth (£5.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Salomón Rondón (£6.0m) – 72 minutes

Newcastle striker Salomón Rondón (£6.0m) continued his scoring run as he netted in Venezuela’s friendly win over Argentina. That’s good news for anyone fielding him for his next two fixtures, against Arsenal (away) and Crystal Palace (home).

However, it was a much more disappointing night for Tottenham centre-back Juan Foyth (£5.0m). He was deployed in a back-three that could not contain Venezuela’s one-man attack or five-man midfield. The youngster has started just one Premier League match for Spurs since Gameweek 19 and his role in this defeat will have hardly helped his chances of a return to regular game-time.

As has already been reported, Sergio Aguero (£11.8m) was not on international duty with Argentina, handing him a fitness boost for Double Gameweek 32.

Peru 1-0 Paraguay

  • Fabian Balbuena (£4.2m) – 90 minutes
  • Miguel Almirón (£6.0m) – 90 minutes

It was a disappointing opening to the international break for Newcastle man Miguel Almirón (£6.0m). He played in central midfield for Paraguay as they were beaten 1-0 by Peru, thanks to a fourth-minute Christian Cueva goal.

However, it was good for West Ham centre-back Fabian Balbuena (£4.2m) out since Gameweek 18, to get 90 minutes for his country.

AFCON 2019 qualifying

Nigeria 3-1 Seychelles

  • Wilfried Ndidi (£4.9m) – 90 minutes
  • Alex Iwobi (£5.4m) – 73 minutes

Alex Iwobi (£5.4m) operated in a number 10 role but did not play particularly well, losing possession several times due to poor passing. According to local press, the Arsenal midfielder struggled to link with the strikers and, despite having the right ideas going forward, could not execute them. He was replaced in the 73rd minute.

Wilfried Ndidi (£4.9m) fared much better controlling the pace of the game for Nigeria and won the penalty that saw Odion Ighalo open the scoring.

Sudan 1-4 Equatorial Guinea

  • Pedro Obiang (£4.3m) – 90 minutes

West Ham midfielder Pedro Obiang (£4.3m) had an enjoyable evening on Friday. Equatorial Guinea and Sudan had already been eliminated from AFCON 2019 qualifying so played out a dead-rubber match in which Obiang scored the fourth and final goal for his country.

Have 1.4m left in the bank with the following FH team. Anyone see anywhere I can put it to good use?

    Ederson
    Azpi – Smalling – Schlupp
    Sterling – Pogba – Hazard – Pedro
    Jimenez – Rashford – Aguero

If you think this is your best team, then nowhere. Sometimes it can be 'dangerous' to spend more money just because you have it.

I don't think I agree with the latter - I'd be less worried about Azpilicueta being rotated, and for all of Luiz's supposedly greater attacking threat, it's pretty even between them in terms of attacking returns.

Only got Pogba... Too many injuries all around the squad. We saw how Rashford's recovering ankle affected his returns. Now Martial and Lukaku are carrying legitimate knocks as well. A CS in either of the games would be a gift, if we're being honest. Lingard hasn't really been an option since midway last season

What drives people to Man U is the fear factor. The fact that it's Ole's Red Devils against non-top 6 clubs who have their eyes on the FA Cup games

In reality, Manchester United is a severely weakened side at the moment due to injuries and recoveries, and BOTH Watford and Wolves would set up in ultra defensive formations

I would actually say the lack of alternatives is driving a lot of people to United. Personally I don't really know what I'll do with my strikers if we don't get a confirmation of Lukaku/Rashford's fitness, and Pogba's price point is a bit tricky.

Is it really realistic to think Jiminez can play at 2 am UK time in Mexico on the 27th, then fly to UK to probably arrive late on the 28th and play ar Burnley on the 30th at 3 pm?!

He does get paid to play. I have him in my squad right now with a PP of $5.7m, but I'm likely to downgrade him to a fodder and go with a 4-4-2 or a 3-5-2.

Mexico's games are in California this time out... and he has done exactly what you describe twice this season already, but with actual competitive international games...

Both Mexico games this break are easy going dead rubbers/friendlies...

He was taken off early v Chile to give Chicharito a run out & likely same vs. Paraguay on Tuesday

No guarantees of course, but I could easily see him starting Burnley, especially as you say he's likely back in the UK on Thursday so has Thursday night & Friday night to recover from the friendly game/s

So i suppose in answer to your original question - yes it really is realistic to think JIminez can play against Burnley at 3pm on Saturday

In answer to your updated concertn - I'd definitely not advise having him in your team if you don't think he'll do well relative to the other strikers competing for a slot in your team

He did, he missed the USA game on 11th Sept, but played both the Costa Rica & Chile game in October, and then missed one of the argentina games in November...

So he's been away on international duty three times and has started the game immediately after all three times, and has started 28 or 29 games

No guarantees he'll start as I said, but no suprise to see him starting Burnley given that track record

Thank you. Currently torn between Jim and Zaha. Jim's in the team for now because he's fit. If Zaha is confirmed fit (already travelling back to England today for further rehab work), then I'll transfer him in. Rest of team is set without fitness worries (yes, only Pogba from Man U)

Cheers, it's important to include that detail though - 3/3 starts immediately after, but 2/3 times he had one less game to play and longer recovery time. And no FA cup semi final the week after of course... but let's not get into that I know where you stand on the myth 😛

Yep he could of course be benched, as could any player... but there's not a lot (/any) real evidence that he would be benched considering Wolves track record - but no guarantees!

Anyone care to take a stab at a RM(non-template)FHT to combat all the same-y ones?

No one over 15% TSB (no Pogba, Rashford, Kane, Son, Aguero, Sterling, Hazard, Ederson or AWB)

    I'm thinking

    Kepa
    Azpi Lindelof Smalling
    Alli Eriksen Dilva Mili
    Kane Higuain Auba

0.1 short of getting in Dilva for my 3rd Citeh pick. At 8.2 Mahrez is doable and this write up suggests he could get some game time! 6&7 in his last 2 ain’t half bad either!

    Anyone else considering him?

I wouldn't. The ceiling is pretty high but I you'd be lucky to get 60 minutes out of him over the two games.

Not without breaking the template. I was hoping to play Deeney up front to do it, anything less than him is fodder. The only other way around it is to go 3-5-2

Back five looks good in terms of spreading the risk around, and has good goal threat.

I'm not feeling Spurs mids, I think it's Kane or bust. But if you're confident in Eriksen that's a very good midfield.
If not, could consider double Chelsea defense with Laporte -> Azpi and get in David Silva for Eriksen?

On the whole, if Lukaku or Rashford are fit I'd bin the 451 idea, but otherwise it could be solid if not explosive

It’s not abt Kepa being dropped for me, it’s abt... who starts both games for City?

Ederson gets two CS and that’s 12 pts for you. David Silva, Mahrez, Sané, are expensive (yet explosive) punts.

Absolutely, and for the first few drafts I was very happy to take Ederson's very likely 12.

But I think Kepa only a bit less likely to get 12, and I'm excited to take the punt on David

Kepa if I was to choose.

I'd want max city attack for these fixtures as there's absolutely no guarantee that City won't leak a goal twice - Fulham are very capable of scoring but are atrocious at the back.

Same can be said for Cardiff - a set piece is possible and they are desperate since scrapping for relegation.

I'd rather take a gamble on a third City attacker.

Somewhat settled on this FH team:

      Foster
      Luiz . Azpi . Duffy

Very good point here. Big reason I've gone with neither, tbh. Recovery from injuries makes any player a risk in a DGW. Especially since we can get info about the FIRST game, but not the second (for instance, if an issue is aggravated by playing the first match, they might miss the entirety of the next match)

Lukaku surprisingly wins this by a mile, if your team can handle the extra 3.2M. His form is the direct opposite of Rashford's, and there isn't enough competition from wingers to make OGS drop him

I really want Lukaku if he's fit.
It's only Rashford's price that is attractive atm.

Lukaku easily, will play as the central striker and differential for those on FH

Any chance Hudson-Odoi gets one start in the double? Could be worth a gamble as 11th starter. Makes getting Kane easy without the rest of you team being too effected

What’s the worst that could happen. Doesn’t play any minutes and 4.2 fodder comes for 2 points. Think I might take the gamble

No the worst is 1 point over the two games

There is that. If he gets a bit of game time he could easily get something

I don't think he'll start either game, not unless something happens to Pedro or Willian. He might get 30 minutes over the two games though. He'd be a nice punt.

At 4.2 he could indeed be the best fodder as he's likely to play a part in both games. But I would be hesitant to put him as a starter

Somewhere in the world a 13 yr old pimple faced boy sitting in a dark room is gonna select a defence of Guita+WannaB+Tomkins and score 26pts in week 32.

After intensive research and countless hours of creating alternative teams, I have come to the conclusion that the best solution to get the optimum points is to do a survey of JG's (Jammy G*ts) who've got every captain decision right this season e.g. ignored Sane, captained Aguero etc etc.

If you are a member of the JG society please, please tell me you team, but not here of course, wouldn't want to upset G-Whizz.

      Many thanks.
