The changes to bonus points in Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season

Bonus points will be allocated slightly differently in Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season, which could change the way managers set up their teams.

These additional avenues for points are still derived from passing, tackles, saves and shots but the parameters in securing them have been tweaked.

In this article, we assess where the changes are and what implications they will have in 2019/20.

Passing bonus points

Passing bonus is often something that Manchester City defenders enjoy in Sky Sports Fantasy Football

In possession-based teams such as Manchester City, defenders and holding midfielders often enjoy a lot of the ball and rack up a hefty amount of passes, earning valuable bonus points throughout a campaign.

These remain the same coming into 2019/20 and will be scored as follows:

  • Passing tier one: 60 passes – count for last season: 351
  • Passing tier two: 70 passes – count for last season: 484

Tackle bonus points – Tier two

Aaron Wan-Bissaka could benefit from tweaks to the tackle bonus in 2019/20

This season, tackles are becoming more important, with tier two bonus points being reduced from five to four, making the margin only one from tier one to two.

An impressive 644 tier one bonus points were collected by players in 2018/19, with the possibility of reaching tier two now increasing with this new rule change.

New Manchester United signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka could do well in this department, having made 129 tackles for Crystal Palace last year, the most out of any defender.

As you can see from the data below, if the 2018/19 campaign was scored in the same way as the new season, a much higher number of defensive players would have received tier two tackle bonus.

2019/20

  • Tackles tier one: Three tackles – count for last season: 644
  • Tackles tier two: Four tackles – count for last season: 223

2018/19

  • Tackles tier two: Five tackles – count for last season: 66

Save bonus points

Save points are a big part of Fabianski’s appeal

When selecting a goalkeeper for your team, there is no doubt that you have to take their clean sheet rate into account, as that can bring in the most points, but that is not their only way to score.

Conceding goals may end up costing you points so but save points can often offset these deductions.

This is another department where the parameters have been shifted, increasing the potential for goalkeepers to score bonus points for saves.

2019/20

  • Saves tier one: Three saves – count for last season: 238
  • Saves tier two: Five saves -count for last season: 118

2018/19

  • Saves tier one: Five saves – count for last season: 118
  • Saves tier two: Seven saves – count for last season: 43

Shot bonus points

Mohamed Salah could enjoy more points this season as a result of tweaks to shots on target bonus

This is perhaps one of the most important sections to receive a tweak, which should allow premium forwards to compete with their expensive counterparts in defence.

To reach tier one shots on target bonus, players now only need to record two accurate goal attempts per game.

Additionals were recorded from shots on only 157 occasions last season but under the new decreased threshold for this year, 667 bonus points from both tiers would have been earned.

Strikers pose the greatest threat of scoring and assisting, as well as earning Sky Sports Man of the Match awards, but lowering the bonus points here adds an extra dimension.

It now means that researching shots on target can add further power to picking the best forward players.

2019/20

  • Shots tier one: Two shots on target – count for last season: 515
  • Shots tier two: Three shots on target – count for last season: 152

2018/19

  • Shots tier one: Three shots on target – count for last season: 152
  • Shots tier two: Five shots on target – count for last season: Five

Man of the Match

While the game-makers at Sky Sports Fantasy Football have increased the chances that players will score bonus points, the Man of the Match award has been somewhat nerfed.

In previous years, options deemed the stand-out performer in their fixture were handed a five-point bonus but in 2019/20 it will be just three.

Often, players who score one of the key goals or two and above in a single game end up being the Man of the Match.

By restricting the points haul to three, there will be less of a gap that can be extended by having particular players.

Don’t underestimate the point-pulling power of bonus points and the impact that it can have on your Sky Sports Fantasy Football team.

They may not have changed dramatically, but that having players in your side that pick them up throughout the season may be just what you need to propel you to the top.

Sky Sports Fantasy Football 2019/20 is bigger and better than ever. Get your team in early and read the latest news and features as you make your selection leading up to Friday, August 9.

So for those going with only 2 big hitters out of Sterling Salah and Kane which one are you leaving out and why?

Kane cause he frustrated the hell out of me last year and august really doesn't seem to be his month.

      Personally i would drop Salah.
People are too scared of him, i remember last season he was awful at start of the season too, only really picked up near xmas. Remember he needs 2 attacking returns for bonus too normally.

Obviously this year is different, but i dont think liverpool will do quite aswell. Where i think Kane will do better than last year, and hes now 11m, and sterling/man city will still ruin everyone. Norwich is the only scary match, but promoted teams tend to do well GWK1 and liverpool are a bit rusty / missing mane

Leaving out Kane. My logic - last season Pool and City players were pretty much fixture proof, Spuds' weren't. There's no reason to think that won't be the case again this year. Think I'm going Salah, Sterling and Moura for GW1 with provision to get Kane in later if it becomes necessary.

      Kane.
The fear is there, but I think that without him I can have lots of 6.5-8.0 players and there could be some nice players in that price this year, like every year honestly

With SSK your enablers are 5.5 players which are pretty bad.

Kane he has the toughest run of early fixtures (although AVL in GW1 is a worry), he also historically doesn't preform well early in the season.

Kane - spent most of the last 6 months out with chronic ankle problems, his manager has started viewing him as more of a deep lying hub for his pacy wingers to run off, and he's demonstrated in multiple prior seasons that even when he bangs in 30+ goals he still doesn't get too much over 200 points

Salah by contrast has a 'bad' season and still gets 260...Sterling is pretty much the main attacking threat in the greatest attack England has ever seen...

And to add insult to injury they both get an extra point per goal AND a clean sheet bonus

It is not an opinion I've formed overnight - this is from a long observation of both Kane and the general FPL landscape

Is not the same thing as saying he won't hattrick in GW1 though as there's a definite possibility he could do exactly that

But it won't be for my team if it happens 🙂

Leaving Salah out, mainly as I am not feeling that Liverpool will hit the ground running. Also I have gone with a Kane/Auba rotation strategy for captaincy, but I really wanted Sterling as well.

    FAO GW3 WC folk...

Are you just loading your team with players from Arsenal, Everton, Bournemouth, Brighton and Liverpool? Best GW 1 + 2 fixtures.

Jigsaw is fitting in Salah, Auba, Pepe (when priced) Richalison/Siggy, Wilson, TAA, Robertson, Digne then filling the other spots with the budget picks.

    Leno, (Button)
    TAA, Robertson, Digne, AMN, (Rico)
    SALAH, Richarlison, Fraser, Trossard, (Stephens)
    Auba, Wilson, (Greenwood)

Best I can whip up right now.

I think city > Everton for the first two personally. He’ll even Zaha > Everton chaps. Yours looks nice I just don’t think I can spend 8m on wilson for the first two especially as i’m Looking to BB. If Sane is staying or even if it’s Mahrez who will play in sane’s Absence I think they are a better pick than Pepe as I doubt he starts the season. Yours looks good to me stick with that double arsenal defence and Auba. Nice team overall

If he was as good as Salah and could keep that PPG up over the course of the season the manager would have played him week in week out but he didn't and played Rash, Kaku, and others ahead of him.

Martial's a nailed on starter against Chelsea. Don't know why people keep suggesting otherwise.

He's played up front throughout preseason, at worst he'll be rotating with Rashford between lw and striker within games. Potentially the bargain of the season imo.

He hasn't consistently been played in his best position (striker) since his first season under van Gaal, which just so happened to be his most prolific at the club.

He wasn't Jose's kind of striker so wasn't getting in there ahead of Lukaku. Ole preferred Rashford there last season but the signs are he's switching their roles at the start of this one.

Fair play to any manager who can take that many players, throw them together overnight and get anything like a coherent performance out of them, let alone with doing it while making the step back up to the Premier league

I'd say both the training ground and dressing room could be a farce of miscommunication at the minute and things could get really bad for them

If he stays fit then hes got a very good chance... The problem is he's scored 30 goals in numerous prior seasons and never really gets too far above 200 points - the curse of being classified a striker rather than a midfielder in FPL

        • 14 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

This. By my reckoning, he needs to score c.28 goals and get 240 minimum to be 'value' if likes of Perez/Jota/Wood can hit 150 (20pp£m which I don't think is unreasonable), Barkley 140 etc and Sterling/Salah continue to be better captain options. It's doable, but he will need to be better than Sterling and Salah (i.e. 30+ goals because of scoring) for me to feel like I'm massively missing out.

I think this is a bit misleading. Three seasons in a row he scored; 211, 224, 217. That's easily above 200 points when he's on fire.

Aguero is classed as an FPL legend and his two highest scores are 201 & 216.

Cliffs: Kane is a beast and 11.0 is cheap.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years

I suppose its subjective - personally I don't consider Kane to have really troubled the 200 point barrier - 210's & 220's are reasonable, but nothing to get excited about (for me anyways)

But then I'm also not Aguero's biggest fan - in recent seasons he's became too streaky & requires an almost surgical accuracy with the captaincy to get the most out of him... 200 points last year, 54 of which came in three games...

Whereas their midfield colleagues sail off into the sunset with their extra goal point and CS point. The scoring system had killed elite strikers imo

He’s going to do very well this season. Looked extremely sharp first pre season game, grabbed a goal & an assist. There’s a plethora of attacking options that will feed off of him & I can easily see 15+ goals 8+ assists this season.

As I said, your SSK team is the best SSK team possible, the enablers are solid, the defense is awesome.

My main problem with it (personal preference):
          1. Can't afford Digne & Robbo
          2. Can't afford any 7.0-8.0 players at all, and there will be plenty of bandwagons for players around this price point early in the season

          I rather have better defenders and 3 mid-high 7.0-8.0 players than 5.5, 6.5, Kane

          For example, 3 of:
          - Siggy/Rich
          - Haller
          - Tammy
          - Kean
          - Rashford
          - Pogba
          - Bilva
          - Maddison
          - Zaha
          - Pulisic
          - Martial

I am far less confident in the 5.5-6.0 players:
          - Neves/Moutinho
          - Grealish/McGinn
          - Ceballos
          - Barkley

I hope that makes sense, good luck mate.

I like it, but that’s coz it’s essentially the same as mine.
      I have gone;
      Ryan/Robbo/Jorgi
      Over your
      Heaton/VVD/5.5

After Barkley took yesterday’s pen I’m considering a second 4.5 Mid and maxing our on both Robbo over VVD and Digne over Coleman.

Saints fan, think Villa overpayed for him. He's a fantastic crosser of the ball, top-tier, but he has little to no pace.

Can't say for certain he'll be a starter, but I hope he does. Recently, Ralph started a 3-4-3 vs Feyenoord, with Hojbjerg and JWP as a double pivot. Attackingly, we were great, but we sorely missed that defensive presence of Romeu. Our CBs were soooo exposed.

If he plays, pretty much on all set-pieces, though.

When I look at Kane’s stats, I look at the 2017/18 season when he wasn’t injured.
I compared him to Aguero’s 2018/19 season, and Kane beats Aguero on all of the key stats (xG,Mina per goal, etc.)
He’s definitely being overlooked and he will certainly be in my team.

Not quite the same thing since Vardy has played several full seasons since then. The point he is making is that people are overlooking Kane based on his performance last season (which was the worst he has had in several seasons)

So his,and apparently your, logic then, is that Kane's injury and being two years older / playing hectic summer schedules etc. is something that can be ignored in statistical analysis of his potential output?

Kane played less minutes last season than in any year since he first broke out and a huge amount of those minutes were when he was rushed back from injury and not playing at 100%. In the three seasons prior to it, he also scored at least 25 league goals in each (8 more than last year). In fact his number of goals scored was actually increasing year on year. Like he said Kane is 26 which is usually a striker's prime, not like a 32 year old Vardy who relies on pace - hence why your Vardy argument is illogical. Last time Kane had a complete preseason was the 2017/18 season that he originally mentioned which is the year he scored 30 league goals?

It makes as much sense to compare a fully fit and ready Kane from two seasons ago as to compare him to the last time he was fully fit and ready than comparing him to when he wasn't at full fitness last season.

Come back to me when Kane finishes as the league's topscorer.

Vardy was 27 in 2015 and 32 now.
Kane was 24 in 2017 and 26 now.

          Along these lines:

          4.5 GK

          2 x Liverpool DEF
          Zinchenko
          Digne/Coleman
          Salah
          Perez

Then take some combo of Kane, Sterling, DeBruyne, Vardy and see what else fits in.
Siggurdson, B Silva, Wilson, Barkley, Adams, Wesley, King the popular choices
