Mané brace brings Salah value into question once again

Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle United

Goals: Sadio Mané (£11.5m) x 2, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) x 1 | Jetro Willems (£4.5m)

Assists: Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) x 2, Andrew Robertson (£6.9m)

Bonus Points: Mané x 3 Salah x 2 Firmino x 1

Liverpool secured a 3-1 home victory over Newcastle United to maintain their 100% winning start to the 2019/20 Premier League season.

A clinical performance from Jurgen Klopp’s side continues to fuel the fire of the Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) vs Sadio Mané (£11.5m) debate after goalscoring contributions from the attacking duo.

The lunch-time kick-off was a game that belonged to the Senegalese international after he opened Liverpool’s account with a fine strike, which cancelled out a special effort from Jetro Willems (£4.5m).

Sadio Mané scored twice for Liverpool in their win over Newcastle

Priced at £11.5m, a whole £1.0m less than his counterpart Salah, Mané’s brace alongside three bonus points means that he has now registered two double-digit hauls in 2019/20 – the same as his team-mate.

Mané did start this match as the centre-forward but actually improved once he had returned to his left-wing berth after a tactical switch from the manager.

Despite Salah also scoring in the victory over Newcastle, Mané’s appeal simply continues to grow given his attractive price and an ability to match the £12.5m man.

For managers looking to save the extra £1.0m whilst maintaining essential attacking coverage from Liverpool, opting for Mané is becoming an increasingly enticing option.

Mané then secured his second of the afternoon after poor keeping from Martin Dubravka (£5.0m), but the forward made no mistake to tuck away an important goal.

Salah did not have a particularly impressive afternoon but still found the net against Newcastle

It was initially looking like it would prove a concerning afternoon for owners of the highly popular Egyptian, with Newcastle suppressing his attacking involvement throughout the game.

However, the most captained player for Gameweek 5 lived up to pre-match expectation with a well-taken goal to put the game out of Newcastle’s reach.

It was a frustrating afternoon for owners of Liverpool’s full-back duo Andy Robertson (£6.9m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.1m), with yet another failure to keep a clean-sheet compounded by a number of missed attacking opportunities.

That said, Robertson did register his first attacking returns of the season with an assist for Mané’s opener.

Both Robertson and Alexander-Arnold went very close to scoring on Saturday afternoon

For those managers persisting in their faith of a Liverpool defensive double-up, Saturday’s result against Newcastle is yet another blow to the viability of such a selection.

With just one clean sheet in their first five Premier League fixtures, it is becoming difficult to justify investing in more than one of their defenders.

Klopp initially surprised Fantasy managers with his team selection, starting Divock Origi (£5.4m) up-front and dropping Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) to the bench after the Brazilian finished international duty in America in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Origi only last 35 minutes against Newcastle

However, Firmino was on the pitch after 35 minutes with Origi forced off with an ankle problem.

The centre-forward made a considerable impact with an exquisite assist for Salah’s opener as well as setting up Mané to register an eight-point score from the bench.

“We don’t want to leave Bobby Firmino out but from time to time we have to be sensible especially after long trips from wherever they come from.” – Jurgen Klopp

Despite the Belgian going off injured, Klopp did allay any concern in his post-match interviews that Origi could be out long-term.

“Hopefully with (Origi) it’s not too serious. He twisted his ankle and played on but felt it a bit too much.” – Jurgen Klopp

Newcastle’s own attacking assets staked their claim, after Willems opened the scoring with a fine strike in the seventh minute.

After receiving a through ball from Christian Atsu (£5.4m), the full-back found space in front of Alexander-Arnold, who did not apply much pressure, and drilled an outstanding strike beyond the reach of Adrian (£4.6m).

Willems scored a spectacular goal to open the scoring at Anfield

But once Liverpool had found their momentum, there was no doubt as to which side would be collecting all three points.

Steve Bruce set up the Tyneside outfit in a compact formation that enabled the likes of Jonjo Shelvey (£5.0m) and Miguel Almiron (£5.9m) to form counter-attacks to feed Joelinton (£5.9m), but the attacking overload that Liverpool are so often able to provide was too much for the Magpies.

Fabian Schar (£4.5m) did leave the Anfield turf injured, but Bruce confirmed that the club was hoping it was an issue of cramp as opposed to a muscle tear.

“It’s the calf, we’re not sure if it’s cramp or a tear. The medical department say he does suffer from cramp a little bit. We do hope it’s that.” – Steve Bruce

Whilst an upset similar to the 1-0 away win over Spurs was truly on the cards after Willems’ opener, Liverpool’s quality prevailed and the likes of Salah and Mané put Bruce’s side to the sword to continue their perfect winning start to the season.

Newcastle’s game-plan was evident from the outset, with Steve Bruce’s setting up in a compact formation that provided abilities to break on the counter-attack, but Liverpool’s mesmeric duo in Mané and Salah proved to simply be too much for North-East side as they cruised to an impressive victory.

    Lowton, Söyüncü, Digne
    Mane, Sterling, KDB, Son
    Haller, Abraham, Pukki

    McGovern, Dendoncker, Lundstram, Hanley

        Current team is...

        Heaton
        TAA, VVD, Lundstram, Digne
        Salah, Sterling, KDB, Mount
        Haller, Pukki

        McGovern, Dendoncker, Montoya, Greenwood

I just really want Abraham and Son.

Ok Eddie Howe, be fair either to me or to the lad Rico. Either keep him on the bench and allow me Buendias 11 points or give the lad a chance. But for the love of god please don’t bring him on in the second half!

I'm on this with 0.8 in the bank and 1FT

    Pope (Button)

    VVD - Zinchenko - Soyunucu - Lundstram - Kelly

    Salah - Sterling - KDB - Ceballos - Donkey

    Vardy - Pukki - Joelinton

I've enough to do Joelinton > Barnes, but I think it's time to wildcard?

Not sold on Vardy, Joelintin and Ceabllos. Would rather Mané over Salah and my back line isn't great.

    Thoughts? Cheers!

CL rotation is about to start, so using WC now could lead to unexpected disappointments if you go CL heavy. Strong bench will soon be more important than so far this season.

Choosing Man City, Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea players is going to be tough. Liverpool is more reliable and straightforward.

          My thoughts:

          GK:
          4.5 GK (Pope/Gunn/Heaton), 4.0 fodder

          Digne, VVD/TAA/Robertson, 5.5 (???), 4.5 (Soyuncu), 4.5/Lundstram

          Salah/Mane/Firmino (Pool cover), Sterling/Aguero/second Pool offense, KDB, Pepe/Aubameyang/Son/Kane, Cantwell, Mount/Ceballos/Trossard/McGinn, Abraham/Haller/Barnes, Pukki

Ayew if you need a cheap enabler.

Otamendi was poor even before. Just that it wasn't as noticeable because it happened less often and the likes of Laporte and Fernandinho came to the rescue from time to time. A chance he's dropped now.

      2. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        4 years, 6 months ago

My curiosity & questioning definitely triggered some quite strong emotional reactions for sure - but that was not my intent

There was a fairly decent case for Ota but the general sentiment seemed to get very unbalanced towards the end of the week & a lot of perspective was lost on just how porous city can be on their day... onwards!

          • 7 Years

I guess the price made it feel like a low-risk move. If I was a Laporte owner, I may have done it too. Disaster if he's dropped now though

          1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
            • 14 Years

The price definitely appears to have been the bait in the trap with 20:20 hindsight - a fair few have been caught in it too i’d wager...

Fascinating to observe the Watford game against this backdrop now - surely a backlash - because if not city could actually start to lose serious ground to pool

Not just this but nobody else is shouting essential from a defensive perspective - otamendi could still end up being value at 5.4m (they were away to one of the best attacks to date after all) but I think we're all having to revise down our clean sheet estimates in general. All the best defences last year are performing much worse in underlying statistics. Man Utd were unpopular on here despite having good underlying stats, but very little attacking threat.

Got 2 FTs and stuck on what to do. Been a few years since I've been in this position! Would you do either:
A - Mount to Ceballos/McGinn and Barnes to Tammy
B - Salah to Mane and Barnes to Tammy plus 0.5 in the bank to upgrade Rico or Lunds?

    Pope
    TAA Digne Soyuncu Lunds Rico
    Salah Sterling KDB Mount Cantwell
    Pukki Haller Barnes

      B. Getting Tammy now vs Liverpool and giving up Barnes vs Norwich is not optimal timing though. Upgrading Rico sounds legit.

I wonder if Pep is going to play roulette anytime soon with being beaten by a team which 'had no defence'?

Loss of Laporte going to hurt big time.

Mane's brace should actually bring Sterling's value into question who has blanked for 2 weeks. Which midfielder sits top of the pile with points?

I get the hype for Abraham and sure will be bringing him in myself on a WC after next week... but don’t get people ditching the likes of Barnes when he’s got a more favourable game next GW!

    Points over price surely?

(Cue Abraham banging in a couple v Liverpool now haha)

I initially thought of doing Barnes > Abraham but on reflection Tammy is worth 7.5 so I’m happy to let him rise twice, play Barnes this week and then probably make that switch in GW 7

When he’s hot you have him for sure. Home games look great but away aren’t so fancy.

KdB Son rotation as opposed to Sterling Kane rotation. I’m thinking quite possibly yes.

yea maybe that. Reason im leaning to Son this week tho is this:

Everyone expected Norwich to get destoryed today with all their injuries and look what happened. People expect Watford to get steam rolled also.

New manager, I think Watford will try their best to hold City at bay as well. Sure KDB didnt start and maybe that attributes to the result so it might be a different story. But personally im not gonna risk it

    My current team is:
    Pope (button)
    TAA, Walker, Digne, Mings, Lund
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Mount, Donkey
    Pukki, Haller, Ayew

    Would you wild card to:

    Pope, button
    TAA, DIgne, Walker, Aurier, Lund
    Salah, KDB, Mount, Cantwell, Donkey
    Pukki, Abraham, Aguero

Have exact cash now before rises. Could sacrafice walker later on to save cash but ideally want to do straight swap to Mendy if he comes back. So maybe have 0.1 wiggle room. Or could take a -12 hit. Thoughts/alternatives appreciated.

Pep said after the game: “stones and ota have played together, we only have the defenders we have so we need to work together”

That tells me he’s going to continue with these two but work with them to improve
