Captaincy fails for over two-thirds of top 10k Fantasy managers

Manchester City’s unexpectedly narrow 2-1 win over Southampton came at a cost for a large chunk of the top 10,000 managers in Fantasy Premier League.

Between them, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m) were handed the armband by almost 70% of the FPL bosses who were inside the top 10k at the point of the Gameweek 11 deadline.

The premium midfield pair duly blanked against the Saints, with Sterling picking up a booking to compound his owners’ misery.

Just under 6.5% of this elite group had more joy with a Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) captaincy, at least, while around one in four top 10k managers overlooked the City trio altogether.

The highest-owned player inside the top 10,000 is Jamie Vardy (£9.3m).

The Leicester City striker, who faces Crystal Palace on Sunday, featured in only 33.25% of top 10k squads ahead of the Gameweek 10 fixtures but his 20-point haul against Southampton has understandably increased his popularity.

Of course, a fair number of the new entrants inside the top 10,000 would have been helped there by owning Vardy in the first place.

The Foxes’ forward was by some distance the most-bought FPL asset of Gameweek 11, being transferred in by just over 675,000 managers.

De Bruyne remains in one in three top 10k squads, with Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) and John Lundstram (£4.7m) – both of whom delivered double-digit hauls on Saturday – also widely owned assets.

Mohamed Salah‘s (£12.4m) popularity continues to dwindle, with just over one in four top 10,000 managers hanging onto the Egyptian.

Indeed, Salah doesn’t feature in the top 10k Wildcard template, with Sadio Mane (£11.9m) proving a much more popular buy.

A two-man strike force of Vardy and Abraham is being widely favoured, with budget asset Aaron Connolly (£4.6m) the third-most-popular FPL forward among the elite managers who used their Wildcard this week.

There is predictably a lot of crossover between the template Wildcards inside the top 10k and outside of it, with Salah and Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) proving more popular in the chasing pack.

We have now hit the 50% mark for Wildcard usage in the top 10k.

One in four of the top 10,000 FPL managers have already used their Triple Captain chips, with the Free Hit and Bench Boost chips not as heavily relied on.

Chip usage inside the top 10k

Just under 33% of the top 10,000 have yet to use a single chip but over 25% have used at least two already.

2.2% of the top 10k have maxed out on their allotted chips already, leaving only their second Wildcard to be used.

I’m also yet to take a hit, and have a pretty decent rank, so I concur with this comment.

Cheap defenders are great, I look out for Chelsea results hiding behind the sofa (I don't have Mount), and I've avoided Callum Wilson so far too.

Perhaps now the scoutcasters will accept that manè is superior to salah and has been since gw24 last season. They’ve all been rather dismissive of him in all the pods this season. I’ve listened with surprise at that. I started with salah over mane myself and made the switch late, but most of the pods seemed to just dismiss manè as the inferior option based on salah set piece duty and only 1m difference in price. At this point I would take manè even for 1m more

I have a tactic this season not to save FTs 😉 hasn't been the most effecive I must say...

The 1.7 ITB needs to be used somehow I think, especially that 4 players from pool - city could easily blank.

Well, we have the same squad except i already have Jimi but not Abraham.

yeah I kind of fancy Tielemans, he has the form.

On the other hand though, City players will continue to score points and perhaps in the big games Pep will avoid hard benching and the players themselves will give a bit more to shine.

MOTD last weekend said Fernandinho was going to be banned for today’s match so assumed Ota would play and you don’t drop a City defender for Southampton at home. Also have Pereira and Dunk so unless playing 4 at the back it had to be Lund on bench.

If you had exact cash would you do Auba, Yarm and Mendy to Greenwood, Mane and Robbo for a -4? Thinking more for the long term.
Will be priced up tonight or tomorrow. Or would you let the opportunity pass you by!

    Pope
    TAA Mendy Lunds Rico Soyuncu
    Sterling KDB Mount Cantwell Yarmolenko
    Auba Tammy Pukki

Any advice on changes to make?

    Pope
    Tomori / Lundstrum / TAA
    Salah / Mount / Sterling / Yarmolenko / KDB
    Jiminez / Abraham

    Bench: Button, Rico, Greenwood, Kelly

    A. Pope to Schmeichel ?
    B. Or find a way to get a Leicester player in?
    C. Salah —> Mane
    D. Get rid of Yamelenko?

    I have 2FTs and 1.4itb.

Yarmolenko has poor fixtures. Greenwood, Kelly will play less and less and need subs active if City mids. Could review strategy aiming for Vardy with Leic fixtures so good instead of Gwood, by Salah to Mane, Sterling to Son say. Not worked out sums. Only suggesting as City fixtures very red. Would need a couple of weeks.

Some talking points below, would love your comments

Will Virgil come good, he’s clearly not getting the same returns like last season but I recall he started very slow then as well. I think I’ll bring in Robbo for him this week on 2ft
Lundstram- I feel sorry for the owners that benched him this week, ouch. I jumped on board 2 weeks ago at 4.6m clearly a must have
Salah debate, should I just bring in Mane and assume no difference in points so take that savings?
Otamendi, definitely no surprises he was benched and I’ve seen 100s of messages lately asking what to do with him. If you had the luxury he was an obvious transfer out 3 weeks ago. Don’t think you can carry any 5.5m defender who isn’t nailed. As for replacements I think the answer is no city defenders are nailed so enter at your own peril. Mendy misses out and Sterling blanks, the pep roulette is too risky and not for the faint hearted.
As for formation there’s still too many forwards performing that 3 up front still feels the way to go. No Abraham for me right now but considering him purely cause of his high ownership. Currently on Auba Jimenez King but looking at Vardy plus 1 for Auba/King

    Cheers

VVD - has most of last season and start of this season as he had the freedom to stay up top and play as a striker after set pieces which made him a constant threat but he isn’t anymore. The full backs are on top form so be silly to miss out.

Salah: not worth the transfer imo, on his way back to full fitness and still has set pieces and pens so for 0.5m extra you may aswell save yourself the transfer

City defence: Agree it’s an absolute nightmare with Laporte and Rodri our, the cheapies have been performing brilliantly this season luckily for those who avoided.

Front 3: Auba Abe King would be my ideal front 3 right now if I could. Tammy is just essential i really think that and king is looking like a new player again. Unfortunately I’m stuck with ings atm at that price range, but I agree there are few good strikers but there is value to be had

Thanks for your comments. Yep Ings is decent on his day but tried to avoid that price bracket so not to be stuck. Do you still have WC intact?

Here’s my team, been chipping away around 130k now
Have decent depth but keep leaving points in bench like McGinn today

            Pope Heaton
            VVD digne Lundstram Tomori Gibson
            Salah kdb Tielemans Mount McGinn
            Auba Jimenez king

Virgil to Robbo for me using 1 of 2FT
Always wanted to wait for post liv v city fixture

    Button Lundstram Rico Dilva

So far for GW12. 10 starters out of 11 at home.

Will still decide between Dunk and Lund pending Spurs result tomorrow.

City still bossing every attacking metric in the league - xG, Big Chances etc.

Frustrated Sterling (c) and KDB owner here but they're both almost season keepers for me. Mane is coming in for Auba in my team, but transferring Sterling/KDB out hasn't really entered my thoughts.
