FPL Double Gameweek 29 confirmed for Manchester City and Arsenal

Arsenal and Manchester City are set for two fixtures in the upcoming Double Gameweek 29.

The two sides will meet on the evening of Wednesday, March 11 at the Etihad Stadium.

That means Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta’s men each have the following fixtures in the Double Gameweek:

  • Manchester United v Manchester City
  • Manchester City v Arsenal
  • Arsenal v West Ham United
  • Manchester City v Arsenal

It may be short notice for Fantasy Premier League managers, with just a few days until the next deadline, but this announcement is sure to send shockwaves through the community.

Still the top-scoring Fantasy asset this season, Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m) was among the three most-sold assets for Blank Gameweek 28 losing 330,000+ owners ahead of last week’s Friday night deadline.

Meanwhile, no player was transferred out by more managers than Sergio Aguero (£11.9m) for Blank Gameweek 28. Despite an EFL Cup final knock, Guardiola has confirmed the striker is fit and available for the next round of action.

These decisions may have been, in part, influenced by a probable lack of Blank Gameweek 31 fixture. But this Double Gameweek 29 announcement has thrown something of a spanner into the works for Fantasy managers hoping to spend the next few weeks preparing their teams for Blank Gameweek 31.

As ever, Fantasy managers may also be scratching their heads when it comes to assessing which Manchester City assets are likely to start both matches of a Double Gameweek.

Gameweeks 19 to 27

As you can see from the table above, De Bruyne is the only player to have started each of the last 10 matches for Manchester City.

Ederson (£6.0m) probably would have done the same were it not for his Gameweek 19 red card at Wolves but interest in his signature is not expected to be too high for this Double Gameweek.

As it is pitting Manchester City against their local rivals and Arsenal, both teams boasting revitalised attacks in recent weeks, clean sheet potential across the two matches is not too high.

Aguero has started on seven occasions, almost certainly sowing enough doubt to cast aspersions on his viability for Double Gameweek 29.

However, the eight starts and 673 minutes for Riyad Mahrez (£8.4m), as well as three goals and four assists during this period, could make him a powerful differential once again.

Is it time to invest in Arsenal assets after Gameweek 28? 6

However, Fantasy managers may find it easier to consider Arsenal options, especially as their first fixture of Double Gameweek 29 sees them host an obliging West Ham defence.

The Hammers have conceded a total of nine across their last three away trips, an average of three per game. Meanwhile, Manchester City have kept just two clean sheets in their last eight home matches.

That could open the door into Fantasy teams for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Nicolas Pépé (£9.2m).

The striker has already been involved in 20 goals this season and is behind Jamie Vardy (£9.8m) by just five points in the hunt to be the top-scoring FPL forward this season.

Gameweeks 19 to 27

When we consider the minutes played by Arsenal assets over the last 10 matches, we see that Aubameyang only missed two, the punishment for his Gameweek 22 red card.

Meanwhile, Pépé has been in fantastic form recently, and enough to ease any concerns about just six starts since Gameweek 18.

Despite the handicap of fewer minutes in the selected period, Pépé’s goal tally is beaten only by Aubameyang among Arsenal players, while none of his colleagues has managed more assists than his three.

With a trip to Brighton in Gameweek 30, Arsenal attackers may also have more long-term appeal than Manchester City counterparts considering it’s Burnley up next for Guardiola’s men who, unlike the Gunners, still have European commitments to consider.

To run further comparisons between Double Gameweek 29 options, check out the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area.

Also, if you have already voted in the latest captain poll, fear not. We are resetting the results so that you can now cast your lot once again, now that we have more up-to-date information.

2ft and 1.5itb, was thinking of just Mooy to Sarr/Saka (and bench boost) then float the other FT. Plan to not use FH in 31

The other option is Grealish, Ings and Mooy to Jota, Saka and Mahrez for a -4 (and then bench boost)

After playing Arsenal, City have Burnley then Real Madrid within 6 days of each other. I reckon KDB will get a rest/subbed early in one of the double GW games. Auba seems the most obvious captain choice this week since Arsenal are out of Europe now.

Have the funds (and a FT) to do Vardy > Auba for GW29 with 0.2 spare...

Angel on one shoulder saying hold Vardy & captain him for Villa

Devil on the other saying ship him for Auba captain

I think when in doubt "sticking to the plan" is justifiable - I. E. use next 3 FT's for Lundy, Ings, Hendo > Doherty, DCL, Pope giving 10 (Good) GW31 players rather than get distracted by the DGW

In other words - take it on the chin if Vardy (c) > Auba (c) turns out to have been the winning lottery ticket

Always go with your gut. But.. I've also held onto Vardy for a long time, but this niggling calf injury has hindered both his minutes and performances, I think it's time for him to go (queue Vardy Hattrick).

In your own words, you could be burned quite horrifically by selling Vardy this week.

Hit the post vs city, injured last week. If you’ve held him through the previous weeks (and you articulated a list of reasons for him not performing in those weeks yourself) then unless you get news he’s injured and won’t play it’s not the time to sell

      1. Invincibles
        • 10 Years

Think Auba outscores him comfortably. Slight question if its worth the -4 but Auba (c) makes it worth it imo.

      2. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

My thoughts are still broadly along similar lines - with the exception of of the additional information being fed back into the loop since last week - with that extra week of information (a) adding a DGW for Auba and (b) adding an injury to Vardy

Similary - my thoughts on Vardy are broadly unchanged - his FPL points output has been shambolic – no questions there, and Leciester’s form has steadily deteriorated with Ndidi’s absence which definitely doesn’t help things

But looking deeper at Vardy’s drought – he had a goal & assist disallowed vs Southampton, missed a penalty vs burnley, went off injured vs west ham, In the Chelsea game he had a 1:1 saved by Big Willy plus Barnes wasted a certain assist, was worryingly anonymous vs Wolves alright - albeit through lack of service, shot back off the post vs Man City, and missed the Norwich game with Injury

The vast majority of that negative “stuff” to me is the type of “stuff” you don’t expect to continue, that’s it’s the exception rather than the rule for Vardy

But this has been done to death anyways, personally, I’d still back him (If he starts - more information on that tonight) home to villa – although Ndidi would really need to hurry back

The Angel & the Devil continue their dialogue for many I would imagine 😉

Anyone else considering BB this week? Saka now looks like a good switch for dendonker which gives me a bench of McCarthy, Cahill, Saka - Ake only bad one this week. Would only have KDB and Saka as dgw players but still seems solid move. Alternative would be I bring more dgw players in this week but would have to free hit 31 I think.

Feel out of step here - just not grabbed by DGW. Waiting till 33 for extra City and Arsenal bar Auba simply don’t interest me. Not clear he’s an intrinsically better option than the form budget strikers

32 is an interesting week. City Liverpool could be anything but happy to not book anything before that.

If capping a doube game week player then Auba is a better option than KDB simply because we know Auba will play both games but we're not a 100 percent sure KDB plays both.

        Why?

Arsenal attack is medium generally and they’re an up and down side at best - easily capable of blanking as per Burnley. WH is a decent fixture but not nearly so enticing as 2 weeks back. City - he could score but quietly that defence now has just about the best stats.

          • 13 Years

West Ham have improved attacking wise in the past couple of games but not defensively and if anything Moyes playing players like Fornals who offer no defensive capabilities whatsoever suggest a more gungho strategy which will leave them more vulnerable at the back. City's stats over the last few games would include Laporte and he's now injured.

          1. pingissimus
            • 5 Years

Laporte is a factor of course but so are the teams WH have faced. I simply don’t rate Arsenal as a team. Expect similar outcome for WH defence as per Southampton - a goal probably Auba. He might score against City but don’t expect him to.
