Fixtures not on Wilson’s side as loss of Andersen could aid Saints in Gameweek 15

Newcastle United 1-1 Fulham

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£6.6m) | Matt Ritchie (£4.9m) own goal
  • Assists: Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Wilson x3, Adarabioyo x2, Sean Longstaff (£4.7m) x1

Callum Wilson (£6.6m) was essentially the only Fantasy man in town for Newcastle’s draw with Fulham, and he didn’t disappoint.

The 17.3%-owned striker scored his eighth goal of the season to earn a point for the Magpies in a game long on controversy and a lot shorter on the nicer things of a footballing life, such as ‘interest’ and ‘skill’.

One-Man Show

Aside from Wilson, the next most popular Fantasy Premier League (FPL) asset on display was Fulham forward and ‘ghost team’ staple Aleksandar Mitrovic (£5.5m and 4.3%).

But, like the rest of his season so far, the less said about him, the better.

It really was all about Wilson on Saturday night – and not entirely for good reasons.

He earned the penalty that drew his side level by throwing himself down in the area under a challenge from Joachim Andersen (£4.5m).

Referee Graham Scott initially awarded the penalty and although VAR showed what contact there was probably started and finished outside the area, he stuck with his decision and sent off Andersen for good measure.

That prompted one of the more honest managerial comments, from Fulham boss Scott Parker, post-match:

I think there will definitely be an appeal. I’ve gone and looked over the penalty incident and I’m not saying this with emotion or bias: I don’t understand how he’s given the penalty.

The game has changed drastically, hasn’t it, and I think we can see that. For what I have just seen – and I’m not standing here trying to defend it – the contact was made outside of the box and he then goes into the box and dives.

Not that Wilson’s FPL ownership were complaining when he picked himself up off the floor, slotted home the penalty – his fourth of the season – and earned maximum bonus for a nine-point haul.

Wilson is currently the fifth most prolific striker in the game, with 82 points, and only eight players have a better total overall.

In the six games in which he has found the back of the net, he has gained bonus points in all of them.

The ‘Best’ of the Rest

Despite all those points, investing in Wilson over the short term looks ill advised.

Newcastle travel to Manchester City next before there are visits from Liverpool and Leicester City either side of New Year’s Day.

Defensively, they’ve kept just one clean sheet in 12 matches, and the 3,322 brave souls who hoped Matt Ritchie (£4.9m) might help rectify that were treated to a comedy own goal when a wayward header from Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m) hit him in the face and went into the net.

As for Fulham, starts for Mitrovic and Tom Cairney (£5.3m) didn’t particularly galvanise the Cottagers’ attack, although the latter did end up joint-top for attempts, with three.

Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) and Bobby Decordova-Reid (£5.3m) spurned their best chances, which has been a recurring theme for the team as a whole this season.

A team that’s scored just twice in four Gameweeks might not worry their next three opponents, Southampton (at home) and Spurs and Burnley (both away), while the loss of the quietly impressive Andersen will be felt at the back on Boxing Day.

Since making his first start in Gameweek 7, he’s helped the side to both of their clean sheets for the season while conceding nine goals in eight games – they’d let in 14 in the first six.

The prospects of Che Adams (£6.0m) returning points appear all the better for Andersen’s unavailability – appeal pending, of course.

Despite the recent upturn in form, a tricky schedule and a Blank Gameweek 18 is unlikely to inspire much investment in this Fulham side, with even their pair of Double Gameweek 19 fixtures involving visits from Chelsea and Manchester United.

Newcastle United XI (4-4-2): Darlow; Dummett (Fraser 79), Clark, Fernández (Hayden 45), Yedlin; Ritchie, Shelvey, S Longstaff, Almirón; Joelinton (Gayle 75), C Wilson.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; A Robinson, Andersen, Adarabioyo, Aina; Zambo Anguissa, Lemina; Lookman (Bryan 90+4), Cairney (Hector 64), Cavaleiro; Mitrović (Loftus-Cheek 76).

I thought about it, then realised it's cheaper to upgrade a defender to Robertson than a striker to Firmino. And the former is more consistent and has more routes to points.

Out of interest - people who are building to a BB in GW19 - what are you going to do with your 2nd GKer, your bench full of playing options and your front 8 that has no obvious bench player?

Seems like a lot will be taking hits to get to that state, and then probably taking hits to re-arrange getting the cash back into your playing XI. Or maybe spaffing a WC to sort it out at the expense of the later BGW-DGW(s)?

Are you sure some of you guys have thought this through properly?

If I was going that route (building for 19), I would just go for TC and not have to worry about loading on bench players and a second keeper etc...

I’m looking at getting Fabianski and using him over Martinez for the 3 weeks up to the double then getting rid GW20. Will transfer out whichever budget attacker looks the worst and then I’m sorted. If I were to FH19 instead I’d go into GW20 without Salah, Bruno, Robbo, Chelsea def, etc which is more important

I'm looking at BB in GW19 because i think I already have a viable squad. I only plan on making 2FT before then. My setup for Boxing Day involves leaving the following 4 on the bench: Martinez, Watkins, Soucek, Coufal. So I'm already close to good for a BB. The only problem is I'll be massacred in BGW18 but I'm not willing to jeopardise my tactics for one GW.

I can get 11 DGW players for a -4. It means bringing in replacements for Forster, Mitchell and Brewster. I am happy to make the defensive switches but I can inly afford someone like Reid from Fulham as a replacement for Brewster.

Mark has had a strong bench all along and he's smashing it. It's a myth that you MUST spend all your funds on the first XI.

I have had a strong bench since GW9 WC and will maintain it through the DGW, then gradually reduce spending on the bench. Will not WC until I really need to.

It's just a few extra mill on the bench. Which could actually prove useful if COVID, bad weather and everything kicks in.

Having rotating keepers was the norm for a while. Martinez - McCarthy is fine. My defense will have a few spare West Ham defenders.

And then in attack, I can easily do a -4 to stabilize the structure if I want to bring Grealish in GW20 asap.
If all goes to plan my 19 looks like:

      Martinez McCarthy
      Zouma James Coufal Balbuena Dallas
      Salah KdB Fernandes Son Raphinha
      Adams Giroud Bamford

In GW20, I can do Raphinha + Giroud > Grealish + Davis. And that'll be that. I can cruise along with this team very happily until GW29 where I'll deadend my team and then WC in 30 with optimal structure.

You can have son or city players as your bb players. Even though they only have a single gw they could end up scoring as well as double gw players

I honestly hate having 0.5m+ tied up in a backup GK so sod that - still going to use BB but not wasting transfer bringing in, and taking out, for 2 random fixtures which would be a total of 4pts. I will be getting 5 playing Def but not all double GWers. I'm generally just sticking with playing the game normally and will go in gw19 with single gw players and not be bothered. There's no way im using a WC to make a team, or fix a team afterwards, way too useful longer term. I also want to carry on concentrating buying the form and fixture players that I would normally want right now until gw19.

Way too much emphasis is put on building a team full of double players when most will barely get over 4pts, defenders especially can flop massively. If you own the main big hitters with doubles in attack then you're sorted. The rest will be hardly enough difference in points to bother breaking my team for it. For example this week, I made a bad call on Cap and lost 15pts. Thats probably a bigger difference than someone else with a full set of double players in GW19 than to my team with some singles and a missing 2nd GK, so for me its not that important compared to playing the game normally, getting the right players for the right fixtures, and getting the captains right, if you get that right, you will do well no matter what else.

That game is really interesting because you have first wildcard available until GW19! Therefore the strategy there is to deadend your team in 18 and then WC in 19.

So I'm looking to get a team in 18 that's like:

    Lloris
    Dias Cancelo Tierney
    KdB Son Grealish Neto Zaha
    Kane Aubameyang

I only play FanTeam and FPL. Their scoring system is similar.

No, l meant how many FanTeams entries do you have?

I've done 13 this season but going to 50 next time assuming it's still running.

            7. But they're all unique haha. I probably should've just made 4 actual teams and multiple entries.

I did 6 unique teams last season but found it to be too much hassle. All my 13 this season are the same.

I hope it keeps running but i'm not convinced sadly. They have been nowhere near reaching the overlay but l suppose they have had 25k teams, which is encouraging.

So jealous you still have your WCs. Very well played.

Would this be a decent bench boost for (-4)?

    Fabianski • Martinez
    Robertson • James • Coufal • Dallas • KWP
    Salah • Bruno • Son • Grealish • Raphinha
    DCL • Bamford • Adams.

Could do Grealish and DCL to Vardy and Soucek(-8) but not sure

      Pretty good.

But GW20 you’ll be scratching your head who to bench and wondering why you’ve got so much cash on the bench

I’m happy with that team GW20. Can get rid of which ever attacker underperforms and Fabianski to 4.0 and I’m sorted

Hi.....is this a reasonable squad to aim for on bench boost for dgw19 please?

It involves a hit gw16 for kdb to son (Leeds and Fulham home)

    And a hit gw18

    Martinez johnstone
    Chilwell james dallas kwp coufal
    Salah Bruno son raphinha soucek
    Kane Bamford adams

    Thanks

Cheers.....yup trent / robbo seems to really complicated things tho

It involves at least 1 more hit.....and I don't think it makes sense to go hit crazy for the dgw
