Taylor and Burnley defence continue to impress despite late loss of clean sheet

Burnley 2-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Goals: Ashley Barnes (£6.0m), Chris Wood (£6.2m) | Fabio Silva (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Charlie Taylor (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Wood x3, Barnes x2, Silva x1

Burnley stretched their unbeaten run to four on Monday night as they defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers at Turf Moor.

The Clarets’ defence once again caught the eye from a Fantasy perspective, albeit without a keeping a clean sheet this time as Fabio Silva‘s (£5.2m) consolation penalty deprived them of a fifth shut-out in the space of seven Gameweeks.

The previously goal-shy Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) and Chris Wood (£6.2m) were reunited in attack and did the damage with close-range finishes either side of half-time.

ALL ABOUT MEE

.

When they are in a rhythm and can call upon their first-choice centre-halves and goalkeeper, there aren’t many teams who look like a more stable defensive unit than Burnley.

The start of the season saw the Clarets having to call upon back-up stoppers Jimmy Dunne (£3.9m) and Kevin Long (£4.4m) as an injury crisis mounted and it was no surprise that they shipped eight goals in the first three Gameweeks.

Since the return to fitness of James Tarkowski (£5.3m) and Ben Mee (£4.9m), things have taken a turn for the better.

In the six matches that those two centre-backs and Nick Pope (£5.4m) have played together this season, Burnley have kept four clean sheets and conceded only twice.

Yes, they are capable of being spanked by the better teams – but that was always the case, as witnessed by the string of 5-0 defeats at the Etihad over the years.

But we aren’t likely to want to field Burnley defenders in our Fantasy teams in those games anyway and the burning question for these budget assets is how likely are they to register shut-outs in the more winnable fixtures.

The answer is ‘very’: Pope kept 13 clean sheets in 20 matches against the bottom-half teams last season. His record is similarly impressive in 2020/21, with five clean sheets in seven games against clubs now sitting ninth or below.

Were it not for a clumsy late foul on Silva by rookie substitute Josh Benson (£4.5m), then Burnley would have been looking at another clean sheet and Pope would be sat atop the FPL goalkeepers’ points table.

Sean Dyche’s side completely nullified players who had turned Chelsea over just last week, with the only two saves that Pope had to make coming from long-range efforts.

TAYLOR’S SWIFT RISE

With Mee and Tarkowski costing that bit extra, Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) has become the go-to budget route into the Burnley backline.

The left-back chipped in with his second assist of the season for Barnes’ opener, getting to the byline and producing a teasing cross for the striker to nod in from inside Wolves’ six-yard box.

Taylor is now the leading points scorer among FPL defenders priced at £4.5m or less.

The prospects for further clean sheets look positive in the next three Gameweeks, particularly the two matches in Lancashire either side of New Year.

The issue is what happens after that. Without a fixture in Blank Gameweek 18, their double-header in Double Gameweek 19 is unappealing and they won’t be top of many managers’ shopping lists for either.

SILVA LINING

Raul Jimenez‘s (£8.2m) head injury raised the possibility of a £5.2m-rated forward leading the line for Wolves over Christmas and New Year but Nuno Espirito Santo has understandably still been careful in placing too much weight on an 18-year-old striker’s shoulders.

In only two of the four matches that Jimenez has missed has Fabio Silva led the line and he was again benched on Monday, with Pedro Neto (£5.9m) and Daniel Podence (£5.5m) tasked with providing the goal threat from kick-off – with little joy.

We don’t even know where Silva stands in the penalty-taking pecking order when he does take to the field as both Jimenez and his understudy, Ruben Neves (£5.2m), were off the pitch when the teenage forward netted confidently past Pope from 12 yards.

MAX OUT?

Max Kilman (£4.2m) returned to the Wolves starting XI after a four-game absence but it’s still too early to say whether he’ll nail down a starting role again.

While the switch back to a wing-back system does open up an extra spot at centre-half, Kilman might not have even started had Willy Boly (£5.4m) – who was an unused substitute on Monday – not been an injury doubt ahead of the match.

Similarly, Owen Otasowie (£4.5m) – curiously playing in an advanced midfield role – would likely not have featured had Leander Dendoncker (£4.8m) been fit.

It remains to be seen how quickly the Belgian will recover but his absence in the middle of the park was keenly felt.

The Athletic’s Wolves correspondent, Tim Spiers, made a similar point, also highlighting Boly’s tail-off in form; it’s no surprise that the clean sheets have dried up as his own performance levels have dropped.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Brady (Pieters 69), Brownhill, Westwood, McNeil (Benson 87); Wood, Barnes (Rodriguez 82).

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patricio; Kilman, Coady, Saiss; Semedo, Neves (Vitinha 76), Moutinho, Ait-Nouri (Traore 60′); Podence, Neto, Otasowie (Silva 60).

Anyone thinking about TC’ing Mo this GW?
I’ve had awful luck in capping a DGW player (Mane, Kane and Sane all getting 1 point) in the last 3 seasons.
We know Salah is rested for the game now... and hey! It’s Christmas! Salanta playing in red and white, bringing the Christmas cheer?

I’ve got 8/9 players for BGW18 in my squad at the moment, feels a bit unecessary to play FH there... leaves me with the option to play either FH or WC DGW19, which saves me the BB and TC to later DGWs. What would you do in my position? I’ve played my first WC also.

Got already Salah and Robertson so want triple up.

Got also Kane so could consider downgrading but not worth it. Other options are to get KDB for Grealish.

G2G? 1FT and 1.1 ITB. I bought Chilwell at 5.5 so planning to hold him and let Taylor/Lamptey to come in from bench.

    Martinez
    Dallas, Coufal, Chilwell*
    Salah, Bruno, KDB, Son, Grealish
    Bamford, Adams

    Forster, Taylor, Lamptey, Brewster

If everything goes smootly, I will make Grealish + Forster + Brewster -> Raphinha/Bowen + Johnstone + Antonio before BB GW19.

Hard to get decent bench for BB if taking Robbo. Vardy and Kane good options but I hope Son is enough from Spurs. In order to get Kane/Vardy I would have to ditch KDB which I don't want to do atm..

Depends, I assume most BB teams will have 5-6 games (average) in their bench.

So basically, 2 games of Salah vs 5-6 games of average players, can go either way..

Simple question : KDB (C) to Salah (C) for a -4, or just wait next gameweek to do it for free ?

My thoughts : I believe KDB can easily match Salah in GW15, but when I look at their history this season, it's hard to stick to my guns. Salah 13 goals, KDB just 2...

Had a very solid week with 97. 2 FT but what do I do with this lot? Would like a liverpool defender but where - if anywhere - is there cash to be saved?

    Johnstone - Nyland

    Cancelo - C. Taylor - KWP - Dallas - Mitchell

    Salah - Fernandes - Sterling - Son - Grealish

    Bamford - DCL - Brewster

Had considered Grealish + Taylor --> Bowen + Matip prepping for DGW 19 but then Grealish had a great game v WBA.

Possibly downgrade Sterling and upgrade Mitchell to TAA? But then I'd be benching one of KWP (Ful A) or Dallas (Burn H). Could get rid of Johnstone but surely Big Sam brings clean sheets + save points. Do I just throw a transfer?

    1) Kane to 7m, Mahrez to Salah, play Coufal over Chilwell if injured

    2) KDB to Salah, Chilwell to Dier

    3) KDB to Salah, Mahrez to Son, Kane to 9m, play Coufal over Chilwell if injured

Don't loose Kane before FUL and LEE. I would do 2. Although KDB's fixture is good for this GW, his ownership will probably less than a quarter of Salah so less detrimental to rank even if he hauls.

Which of these 3 startegies to do for dgw 19, after FH gw18:

    1) Forget Son vs Fulham and get 15dgw (-8) for BB, Rashford/Ziyech instead
    2) Take Son + Vardy/Kane amd 14dgw(-8) for BB
    3) Have 11dgwker and BB later
My BB chip players are CheAdams Rafinha Ctaylor Johnstone
Problem with BB now in no Mcity and they have amazing matches after dgw while Soton Whm Burnley will be useless

Whichever leaves you with a more balanced team GW20 onwards, I assume 3.

With 1 and 2, you will get -8 before the DGW19 but you will probably need to get another -4/-8 to fix the team again after DGW19 which would even out the advantage from BB.

After thinking carefully I’ve settled on this.

    Already have 7 BGW18 players and 7 DGW19.

Therefore, plan on having 8 players including Grealish, Kane, Dias and KDB for GW18
7 DGW plus Grealish, Kane, Dias and KDB for GW19 with Salah as TC
    WC GW25
    BB GW26
    FH BGW29

Would really appreciate any thoughts on this and if anyone out there is planning to do the same.

You'll be competing against a lot of teams that are filled with doubles in GW19 so you might struggle but could make up the ground later. I'm actually wondering if it's a good idea to WC a doubles squad in GW19 under the assumption that a lot of the players will likely have doubles again in GW26. Some risk as it depends on the FA CUP results but could work out nicely and also keeps the FH for 29. Just means the TC will need to be used in a small double

      8 DGWers + Kane/Son/Martinez + Salah TC
FH in BGW29 (I believe it will be a huge advantage to have FH by then)
WC before the next big DGW
BB in the next big DGW

However, I think it may not be that certain that we will have the big DGW in GW26, I assume FA may want to move GW29 doubles as late as possible, namely to GW37. In that case, GW26 could be a DGW with GW1/11 blanks and can be navigated with FTs, In that case, WC between 33-36 and BB37.

If I still have my 1st WC then FH18 and BB19 (load up DGWs on WC) is the preferred strategy right?

You have to use your WC by Monday 28th December and you can only use one chip per GW.

I think the best strategy is to WC in loads of DGW19 players - then FH in GW18 - then BB in GW19.

if a player is brought in just for 1 week through the activated free hit chip, and his ownership increases by 1 million managers on a Monday, and another 1 million on a Wednesday, can his price increase if his ownership has increased even though by start of the next gameweek he will not be in the squad as their team will revert back to the original team. (if that makes any sense) and if so, does it fall again as the 2 million managers that had transferred him in will no longer have him..... in other words do free hit transfers effect players price rises/falls even though there not a permanent transfer?

I don't think FH transfers count towards price changes (same as wildcard transfers)

Are the blanks in gameweek 18 confirmed now? Or might it change later on? Thinking of making a slow transition until then so I dont have to waste the free-hit chip.

Yea, could there be more blanks than the 5 matches that are already postponed in GW 18?

Just had a thought on a different strategy. What are your thoughts? What are the major downsides?

I have 8 Blank GW players so can't make a decent GW19 squad without WC / FH.

My original plan was to build to a GW18 squad and FH19, but this leaves me with potentially less than optimal players from 20 onwards. Would it be better to WC in 19 instead under the assumption that double GW26 will mainly include better teams (who reach FACUP quarter's) so my GW19 WC probably includes a lot of GW26 doubles already. Then I can build to a bench boost in GW26 and still have my FH to navigate blank 29. Thoughts?

Bit too much of a reach for me that. Have you considered my approach above?

If you can get to 11 bgwk players then WC into a great squad for the dgw then yeah why not, it seems viable. One of the main issues I see with using the FH in gwk19 is that it generally seems to lead to an arguable weaker squad from gwk20 on although if needs must then so be it. The approach you've outlined here seems fine though.

Guys who would rather prefer over next 6-7
      1) Kdb
      2) Kane
      3) Vardy
Although Vardy is cheaper and has 1gw more, Antonio/Wood give options to pair with Adams/Bamford whereas kdb replacememts are bowen/rafinha etc.
Both teams have Bruno Salah Son as constants

I've gone Kane. I had Vardy, Bamford and Brewster. I don't own/want DCL so the third striker spot is up for grabs in my team. I didn't see any decent strikers this week, and I didn't want to commit to a striker with dgw too soon, but wanted Spurs, so I did Vardy to Kane, and it didn't go well.

Cmon Fellas when asking advice on strategy for GWs 18 and 19 , please state whether you still have first WC or not .
You have 1st WC , it is blatantly obvious what the strategy should be.
The questions come when you don't so make it easier for those you seek advice from

Actually opposite as now hardly 10% have wc left so they should mention instead

I would keep Jamess until further notice to be honest. You'll want him back very soon as he is a good shield against chilwell owners and his price is just too good for his return.

Plus, I think he will be back pretty soon

Good point. I think it all depends on the "knee injury". Those things can be nasty even if a lighter version...

nailed but fragile. Back problems are hard to handle. They come and go without really alerting so you should probably expect some odd missed games through back pain from Matip imo

Would you bench boost in GW19 if your bench players were Dias, Son and 2 fodders? (Gordon and non-playing 4.0 keeper which are really not worth additional transfers)
