Moving Target

What can FPL managers expect from Nuno Espírito Santo at Spurs?

Tottenham Hotspur finally ended their long hunt for a new manager after appointing Nuno Espírito Santo as head coach.

Arriving on a two-year deal, the ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers boss replaces José Mourinho and brings in Ian Cathro (assistant head-coach), Rui Barbosa (goalkeeping coach) and Antonio Dias (fitness coach) as part of a backroom staff reshuffle.

In an interview with the club’s official website, the new managing director Fabio Paratici explained the reasons behind the decision to appoint the 47-year-old:

“First of all, we appointed Nuno because we have to be logical in our choice, so we needed a coach who respects our key points that we have in our minds. Our key points for this season would be to come back to discipline, to work physically hard, to develop our players, our young players and Nuno is very good in this job.

He did a fantastic job at Wolverhampton in the last four years, developed a lot of young players and we have to remember players like Pedro Neto, Diogo Jota, Adama Traoré and Raúl Jiménez, attacking players who were not so famous before coming to Wolverhampton.

Also, he adapted a lot of players for his system. Before Wolverhampton, he was in Porto and played another system, 4-4-2, and in Valencia he played 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1, so he has this kind of open mind about different systems and players, which is one of the reasons that we chose him.”

It’s a decision that has not gone down especially well with the club’s fanbase, but can Nuno’s appointment help galvanise Spurs, and what are the implications for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions in this Moving Target report.

THE HISTORY

Born in São Tomé in Portugal, Nuno was a goalkeeper during his playing career and was part of the Porto squad that won the 2002/03 UEFA Cup and 2003/04 UEFA Champions League under Mourinho.

After retiring in the summer of 2010, he worked in backroom roles at Málaga CF and Panathinaikos, before being named as manager of Portuguese side Rio Ave in 2012. In his second season in charge, they were finalists in both domestic cup competitions and qualified for the UEFA Europa League for the first time in their history.

In 2014, Nuno moved to Valencia where he delivered a fourth-place finish and qualified for the UEFA Champions League. He then spent a season at Porto before moving to England and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

His first season at Molineux was a real triumph as he led the club to promotion and the Championship title. He then guided Wolves to a seventh-place Premier League finish in the 2018/19 season, and repeated the feat in 2019/20 while also reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League.

Despite a solid start to 2020/21, last season was a forgettable one for Wolves. Injuries, a lack of squad depth and fatigue meant that they were unable to find any real consistency, and as a result Nuno left the club by mutual consent in May.

NUNO ESPIRITO SANTO’S PREMIER LEAGUE RECORD:

Games114
Won43
Drawn32
Lost39
Win rate38%

Given the underlying data, last season’s 13th place finish felt about right.

While the defence did perhaps look a little less assured than in previous seasons, they ranked mid-table in most of the key defensive metrics:

TotalRank v other Premier League sides
Goals conceded5212th
Shots conceded44210th

If Rashford get surgery, What will be Man U front 3 for you?

    For me it's

    Martial Cavani Sancho

If Lingard doesn't leave he would probably be preferred to Martial.

Martial is a liability for us.

If lingard doesn't go back to WH, then Yarmolenko at 5.5 could be the value of this season

Utd will likely score more goals again this year (should be on 75-80+ after getting 73 last year) - but the front 3 will be very very fluid & won’t be settled imo

Ole will pick & choose based on what he sees in training, who the opponent is, form, fitness etc

Cavani will be wrapped in cotton wool - he’s 35 this year and can’t start 50 games and is comfortably their best striker, so lots of benchings, cameos from the bench, and early subs after starts

If Pogba is still there he will cloud the waters further as he can play LWF too

Bruno is going to be there for nearly all of it though, just casually picking up assists & goals for fun

Sancho and Rashford are both right-sided so I'm expecting a dramatic reduction in Rashford minutes this season regardless of whether he has surgery or not.

      Sancho, Bruno, Pogba
      Cavani

Rashford is really, really *really* bad on the right

            He just can’t play there

He has to play on the left cutting in on his right foot, centre forward he struggles, and right wing he just flat out disappears

Hate the way blatantly false stuff like this gets posted so easily and so often on FFS

Yesterday it was some guy casually remarking before the game that Immobile was quote-unquote “immense” at penalties and should take them for Italy

(Immobile has taken 8 penalties in Serie A this season & missed 4 of them)

A few days back some guy proclaiming Daka had turned down Liverpool because he wasn’t going to start for them and therefore would definitely start for Leicester (then when challenged revised this to “well I think Liverpool might have tried to sign him”)

You can’t believe what you read on here, people will chance their arms posting any old shite/lies/guesses confidently dressed up as fact

Immobile is very good at penalties in fairness (career percentage 81.4%, well above average) so I wouldn't call it blatantly false. I personally think Jorginho is better and should take them, but conveniently narrowing the sample size to fit your narrative and then ridiculing someone's opinion based on that is kinda lame on your part tbh.

While I agree with the point sbout narrowing down stats to fit a narrative, in this case if ypu are immense at penalties you do not miss 4 out of 8 in a season… 81% is that much higher than the average. I think xG uses 75-76% for penalties so 81% is above average but not enough to be considered very good in my eyes, and very far from being immense

                  1. Deeney-is-a-god

A couple of types here, but bottom line is: 81.4% is considered above average, but far from immense. And therefore I think it is blatantly wrong to use the word immense. Bruno is immense at penalties, I think he has missed one of his last 33 which gives an conversion rate of 97%…

Saying Rashford is better on the right - blatantly false

Saying Immobile is “immense” at penalties when (a) he’s missed 50% of the 8 he’s taken in the league this season (b) the poster wasn’t aware he had missed 4 of 8 league penalties his season and (c) upon being made aware, agreed that immense was not appropriate - silly

Saying Daka turned down Liverpool due to being told he wouldn’t start, then a few posts later admitting you’re not sure Liverpool even tried to sign him, let alone entered talks - ridiculous

Clutching your pearls at any of the above - even worse 😆

I'm getting my left and rights muddled. I've taken a look at the heat maps and it was the end of last season he played down the right with Pogba on the left, but he's normally down the left which is his better side I was think of.

Sancho signing makes a lot more sense now.

Solid, dare I say 'templatish' although Mahrez and Saka seem to be flavour of today. My main concern here is only one viable sub (Harrison). Williams will likely move to the Saints bench and Davis is 4.4-within-a-month-can't-damn-well-shift material.

Stick or twist on Chiesa (c)?

I'm currently 11th in Scotland, 22 points from 1st. Everyone has the same England players tonight and as most had a captain fail last night they will be captaining Kane, Sterling etc. Think the only way I can make up ground is by twisting to Sterling, hope he hauls and everyone else goes Kane(c)

Last game I was thinking CBA; this game I'm thinking ABC.

I think England are more likely to concede than last game. The game is more likely to go to extra time. Also, maybe a more likely that a goal will come from pens. Denmark maybe more likely to deal with Sterling, because it's even more obvious he's a danger man now, and Denmark are more capable. These are just my thoughts. I'm still not sure though

I basically need to choose 2 of Morata (5), Maguire and Stryger Larsen.
Already got Maehle, Shaw and Pickford on the pitch

Should I sub Donna’ 3 points for Pickford?? Have Shaw and Maguire, or should I be dull and hedge bets and keep Donna’s 3 points???

      I’m making the sub

Yeah think I will too mate, I have Maehle and Damsgaard so that’s making me think more, but realistically I don’t see England conceding more that one so he should get 2 or 6 points really!!

17 points behind mini league leader. Surely Sterling (C) over Kane?
Don't want to punt on defenders (C) since I think both will score.

chasing down 7 points with my Shaw and Sterling vs Pickford and Grealish.

Would you gamble captain Sterling or match his Kane?

Match Kane, gamble in the final.

Yeah I’d say match Kane and give yourself a bigger chance in the final and hope your 2 outplay his 2

Keep captain on Emerson or switch to Kane/Sterling/Shaw/Maguire/Stones? Chasing a 15 point deficit

    Grealish on for a two-pointer from yesterday . . .

    No-brainer "do it"
    No-brainer "don't do it"

    Thoughts?

He’d be an ultra differential, not sure if many at all with have them armband on him

  25. Alisson WondHaaland

Foden on for a one pointer?

Ive done it the past 2 rounds and ended up with 2 fat zeroes so a bit reluctant

Have a mere 5 point lead over my rival and he has an extra player today so every point is vital

    1. Thomas Magnum
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

Will he be replacing someone who has scored 2 points?

I’d say he’s worth taking a chance on then if it’s 1 point. Would’ve probably said no if it was 2 points. You’d have to hope England go behind though of game goes to ET I guess

Kane the only realistic candidate to pass Ronaldo/Schick in top goalscorer? Or do you see anyone else that could be a serious challenger?
