International Football

Which FPL players are on international duty and who will miss Gameweek 4?

The first international break of the season got underway today, with not far off 200 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players in action for their countries over the next week.

Some national sides are cramming in a triple-header of games over this period and a handful of Fantasy assets will be taking part in all three of their nations’ respective matches.

Others won’t be featuring at all, with the Premier League clubs digging their heels in and (mostly) refusing to release players for national team duty if they are representing, or playing a match in, a country on the UK government’s red list.

The likes of Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), Raphinha (£6.5m), Gabriel Jesus (£8.5m) and Richarlison (£7.6m) look set to have the fortnight off and – as it stands – be available for Gameweek 4, then, although the threat of five-day sanctions beyond the international window for Brazil players still hangs in the air at present.

Who Will Miss Out in Gameweek 4?

Toney off the mark as injuries and Covid impact Villa 3

Anyone travelling to a red-list country faces quarantine for 10 full days in a managed hotel on their return to the UK, and Premier League players are no exception.

As far as we’re aware, there are only five such FPL assets who fall into this category in the September international break.

Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m), Emiliano Buendia (£6.4m), Davinson Sanchez (£4.5m), Giovani Lo Celso (£5.9m) and Cristian Romero (£4.9m) have been given permission by their clubs to head to South America and all of them will miss Gameweek 4 as a result.

The quintet are available for their countries’ first two World Cup qualifying matches but will not take part in the third international match – meaning that their quarantine periods will have ended by the time Gameweek 5 comes around.

OTHER PLAYERS WHOSE COUNTRIES FACE RED-LIST NATIONS

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 3?

You may notice some players in the club-by-club list below whose names we originally listed as being at risk of missing Gameweek 4 if they went away on international duty.

There is a compromise of sorts for these FPL assets: they are being allowed to represent their countries but in only the fixtures not staged in a red-list nation.

For example, Michail Antonio (£7.9m) is being allowed to turn out for Jamaica in their CONCACAF World Cup qualifier at home to Panama on Sunday.

But Antonio will miss the Reggae Boyz’ other two games, away at Mexico and Costa Rica, as both of those countries are on the UK’s red list for international travel.

As a result, and barring injury or illness, he’ll be allowed to play in Gameweek 4 for West Ham.

The recent scout article suggests that Romero & Sanchez won’t play GW4 so does that mean tanga nearly certain to?

Yes he definitely will. But not sure what the arrival of Emerson will do for his place going forward. He has been very good though

Yeah wait and see, he could even play CB as you said which is his best position I feel. I think Tanganga holds his spot though somewhere in the team

Didn't know that, thanks. Thought he was a natural fullback, dunno where i read or heard that.

No problem. He has always been a CB through the youth ranks etc. although whenever he plays in the first team its basically always been at RB (which says a lot about the right backs at the club). Will be interesting to see his development over the next few years to see where he ends up playing

Could you help picking one of this lots for Barnes please (WC GW7)? Comparison tool refers to Traore although he's not clinical (as yet):

Really does depend on how much you want Ronaldo, and how often in the next 4 you’ll captain.

I like B. I think Grealish will explode, and most likely to play in the prem as Champions League returns; just a hunch.

      interesting 2x for City assets.

i think you're right that if i shift Bruno>Ron that i'll end up with a City player - probably Torres for the money saving but Grealish does "feel" more nailed for whatever reason.

Still not convince on Ronaldo just yet - not that i don't think he'll be amazing, just not sure about the first fixture, starting, game time etc.

Don't think he's much of a trap because bringing him in isn't going to have much downside.

If you have Bruno then he's certainly going to be devalued as an asset with Ronaldo in the team, so I'd want him gone regardless, which gives owners an easy route to get to Ronaldo.

Also you're going to want Lukaku from GW7 anyway, so having Ronaldo lends itself towards that structure. But Lukaku's fixtures aren't all that good before then, so there's little upside to just opting for him first.

And so many people will own Ronaldo that any blanks will be widely shared.

I can't see how it will go badly wrong. If he doesn't perform you'll just sell as planned in GW7 anyway.

This. With Ronaldo and Bruno in the same team Ronaldo is certainly the better option. Most will be captaining this week too. Might as well make the move early for the Newcastle game and get ahead of the curve. Worst thing is he plays poorly and you straight switch to Lukaku

      What to do with Ronaldo?

This question is highly important, and one that feels pivotal in rank for the next 4/5 weeks, and certainly important for the overall narrative of our individual season.

Guided by nostalgia, fully-functioning eyes, or both, many are using their free transfers, even the precious Wildcard chip, to accommodate the sensational Portuguese goal-machine. Deciding your own stance is essential, one that calls for a quick, snappy answer, considering that plum Newcastle (H) fixture.

Ownership statistics are currently above 10% already, and comes in at a hefty 12.5m price tag. This tag alone can help determine the stance; if you don’t plan to captain Ronaldo in atleast 3 of the next 4, the answer is clear: do not get Ronaldo.

For others, if you plan to transfer him in, then, considering United’s form is key. In my opinion (I am not driven by stats, mainly the eye test) United have looked distinctly average against two average teams. Will United show their gameweek one form in the next few weeks? Nobody knows. The Mctominay injury, certainly has that feeling of ‘importance’ - Fred is in poor form. Assessing your stance on United’s future form, particularly when many will be taking a hit, is essential, yet tricky.

Ronaldo isn’t a clear-cut answer, but it could certainly feel like it was as the captain hindsight caps are swiftly, and en masse, placed on heads as he scores big this gameweek, felt more acutely with many placing the potent armband on him.

I’m leaning towards Ronaldo. For those that say they pick players based on who they think scores the most points, will certainly demonstrate how the crowd influences them. Fear is pervasive.

Do I take a -4 or lose my mind behind the sofa for the weekend. That -4 suddenly seems less painful.

Adios. Good luck all. P.S. if I had Lukaku I’d (C)

        I might end up wldcarding!

Watching the great Ronaldo gold rush is certainly making me think I’ll be mad to miss out. I shall bring him into my team at some point. But something is holding me back. I’m one of the few who has Kane. Spurs are away to Palace which won’t be easy for them but still could provide. I’m also concerned about whether will adapt quickly to the change. I might just sit this one out. Plenty of time to make up any loss.

I think this apprehension around Ronaldo is funny and almost borderline ridiculous. (I'm thinking Merse and Souness, sorry Sourness).

Ronaldo is a goal machine. A literal goal machine. He's played in Italy, trained daily against the best defenders in the world. Outscored the 90+mil striker Lukaku.

In the Euros he tore up France, Germany. There are perhaps 3 worthy defences in this league. Chelsea, Liverpool and City.

He is absolutely going to run riot.

I think he's just one of those players like Salah. He will score. It doesn't matter who it's against. For me Salah is another undroppable. Ronaldo will do the same thing.

Lukaku is almost a must have too. He's playing for one of the best teams we'll see. They make chances for fun.

There’s a small argument though to say his goals in a worth 4pt plus 2/3 bonus each time. Still very good but does lose CS bonus and won’t provide many assists

Over the past 5 days or so Ive gone from being really stubborn on a GW7 WC to being almost certain to wildcard in GW4 but now I think Ive settled for a middle ground: Ill wildcard if Firmino is out long term.

I think my team is decent enough to not wildcard but a nailed Jota would tip the balance

      I'm in the same boat.

I read something from Andy Social which stuck with me though. WC from a position of strength. I was set on a GW7 or 15 WC. But I felt like my team was reaching its limit and players like Lukaku, Ronaldo, Ings, Tsimikas, Amartey just needed to be addressed one way or the other.

      1. Alisson WondHaaland
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 7 months ago

Yeah thats completely fair, the premium strikers definitely puts a spanner in the works.

For me, Ive looked at my wildcard draft and my current team and I cant say with confidence that my wildcard team would do better than my current one unless a nailed Jota was involved, hence my decision.

Its definitely an individual thing, some people can do Bruno + Ings to Jota + Ronaldo for no hits this week, if I was in that position Id certainly save the wildcard

    Sanchez (Foster)
    TAA Shaw White (Livramento Amartey)
    Salah Bruno Greenwood Benrahma (Brownhill)
    DCL Antonio Toney

1.4m ITB, 1 FT. Feel like things are in decent shape. Can obviously do Toney/Bruno to Ronaldo/Torres for a it. But am I crazy to feel like it's a better idea to hold? Gives us time to see if DCL is fit, Toney has a good fixture, Ronaldo may not start, can see how long Firmino may be out in case I decide on Jota instead of Torres, etc..
