FPL team news: Injury updates ahead of EFL Cup quarter-finals

Before the festive football commences with Gameweek 19, there is a round of midweek EFL Cup quarter-finals involving seven Premier League teams:

  • Arsenal vs Sunderland
  • Brentford vs Chelsea
  • Liverpool vs Leicester City
  • Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United

Here is a round-up of Tuesday’s press conferences, with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) team information found on our Predicted Line-ups page and Injuries and Bans feed.

Virgil van Dijk, Thiago, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson - potential Liverpool return dates amid Covid and illness | LiverpoolWorld

LIVERPOOL

Four players are out with Covid – Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Curtis Jones – whilst Andrew Robertson begins his three-match domestic suspension for the red card received at Spurs.

“Health comes first so we have to make sure we don’t rush it, that they come back whenever they are ready. People underestimate when it’s 10 days’ quarantine, they think they can play immediately on day 11, but football doesn’t work like this.” – assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders

Jordan Henderson missed Sunday’s 2-2 draw with a regular cold but is available again, although Divock Origi “is still not training with the team” due to a knee injury. Nathaniel Phillips (cheekbone), Adrian (calf) and Harvey Elliott (ankle) are still on the sidelines.

CHELSEA

Thomas Tuchel was quite open with his injury updates here, seemingly ruling out the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek (ankle), Andreas Christensen (knock) and Trevoh Chalobah (knock) as well as their four known Covid victims – Ben Chilwell, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku.

“The players [with COVID] are OK [but] they are out for ten days before they can be released. We don’t really know when they can play. Nobody is back except for Jorginho. Andreas Christensen is very doubtful and the same for Trevoh Chalobah.”

Jorginho (back, plus an inconclusive Covid-test result) is available again but Hakim Ziyech (calf) may not be. Tuchel will not play N’Golo Kante this time, calling himself “close to irresponsible” for handing the Frenchman all 90 minutes against Wolves.

ARSENAL

Takehiro Tomiyasu was removed after 63 minutes of the Gunners’ 4-1 win at Leeds, which Mikel Arteta says was due to muscular discomfort.

“We decided to take him off, he wasn’t 100 per cent confident to continue in the game, and hopefully he’s not injured.”

Pablo Mari and Albert Sambi Lokonga remain out due to Covid, as Sead Kolasinac (ankle) continues his absence.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

There was good news from Antonio Conte regarding his squad’s Covid situation.

“All the players are now negative, which is good news for us. As you know well, with Covid, you need a bit of time because, for sure, many players at this moment are not so fit because they had to face this situation, but the good news is all the players are available. We have a little bad news in Ryan Sessegnon, he had a problem at the end of the game against Liverpool (on Sunday), he’s the only player with Cristian Romero who is injured.”

A muscular problem is set to keep Ryan Sessegnon out for around two weeks, as Cristian Romero (hamstring) remains out until early 2022.

WEST HAM UNITED

Vladimir Coufal will be suspended for the cup tie, following his Gameweek 17 sending off at Arsenal that couldn’t be served last weekend because of postponement. Centre backs Kurt Zouma (hamstring) and Angelo Ogbonna (knee) are still injured, with Aaron Cresswell pencilled in for a return having missed four matches with a back injury.

“We’re very good. The training ground has been very good and most are okay. We have got one or two with the virus, but most are very good and long may that continue.” – David Moyes

Ben Johnson (hamstring) and Ryan Fredericks (groin) are unlikely to take part at Tottenham.

LEICESTER CITY

With their last two league fixtures postponed due to Covid, it could be a patched-up Foxes squad that faces Liverpool on Wednesday.

James Justin (knee/match fitness) and Wesley Fofana (leg) have been out for a while, with undefined illnesses for Kelechi Iheanacho, Ademola Lookman, Jannik Vestergaard, Ayoze Perez and Hamza Choudhury.

Jonny Evans left the Gameweek 16 win against Newcastle United after five minutes because of a hamstring problem, the same injury as Caglar Soyuncu.

BRENTFORD

After recent Covid problems for Ivan Toney, Ethan Pinnock and many other players and staff, head coach Thomas Frank delivered positive news on the Bees’ current state, having also missed the last pair of matches.

“We have enough. We will have 11 players. We are in a fine place. We had six/seven [positive cases] last Thursday, but after lateral flow and PCR tests, we’ve had zero for the past two days.”

They are still without David Raya (knee), Kristoffer Ajer (hamstring), Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen (thigh) and Josh Dasilva (hip) but Frank said “let’s see what we will do” in regards to starting forward Marcus Forss.

FPLMarc Newcastle fan that spends far too much time thinking about FPL.

I like the idea of getting Origi in while Salah and Mane are gone. But unless I leave a chunk of cash in reserve that would have all the makings of a -8 just to get Salah back in. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

I wouldn't go there. I don't think he is necessarily nailed on, and like you said, it's a planned transfer

Problem is that GW22 is probably a DGW and Liverpool won't have a DGW fixture. You'll be focussing your transfers there first.

Salah will likely be back by GW24/25. You'll have 2-3 FTs max to get him back. Far easier to just swap him for a mid like Son temporarily.

      Plus currently, Origi is injured.

The Salah subject tends to be the one everyone ignores. Yes, moving him out is common, but getting him back is pushed aside in peoples brains.

It's pretty easy honestly. -4 at most for a player I'd happily captain.

Gallagher. Watford have been hit by covid more recently & Wolves have had a great defence regardless.

Assuming both fixtures go ahead, King.

His underlying stats are good, he’s on pens, and Dennis has a high ownership, so King is both a good differential and excellent cover for Watford returns.

    https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2021/dec/21/thomas-tuchel-falls-short-in-stance-on-chelsea-and-covid-vaccines

this is spot on. Tuchel had an opportunity to encourage vaccine takeup and he wasted it on vague nonsense.

Disagree. Tuchel has just been consistent on his stance throughout, there's no story here & literally zero reason for villifying him (cheers English press).

From Sept on Covid & Kante resting positive (there's rumours he was unvaccinated).

"... And we are also only a reflection of society, the players are adults and it’s free choice if they want to get vaccinated or not. And I think we should accept it."

“Every time someone gets it here from us or from our group, it makes us very aware the Covid situation is not over."

“I hope that it gets as less as possible but I clearly don’t have a solution. I can make the decision for myself, and everybody else needs to reflect about it and take a risk or not."

“I think it’s a serious question and vaccination seems to be a proper protection. I am vaccinated, I took the decision for myself. But I don’t really see myself in a position to speak out proper recommendations, I think that would go too far."

“I’m a football coach, I’m not a 100 per cent expert in this and I would leave it up to them. And everybody is adult enough and everybody lives in a free country and a free society, which is a good thing, so people can make their choices."

the article points out he is a very smart and interesting guy who isn't afraid to give his opinion but he sits on the fence on this...its all just generalisations and there seems to be zero encouragement to others to get vaccinated. make football safe to play , get the vaccine. its not hard. he's vaccinated so he obviously believes in it, just as klopp and gerrard do and they actively encouraged it. he hasnt.
"But I don’t really see myself in a position to speak out proper recommendations, I think that would go too far." why is that too far?

the experts say get the vaccine. he agrees with the experts. he got the vaccine. just come out and say it?? this make your own mind nonsense serves no purpose. if he thinks the vaccines arent safe then say that and explain why.... david icke isnt an expert. neither is nicky minaj. but thats who people and id wager a lot of footballers are listening to over actual experts. im not an expert in water safety, id still tell people not to go swimming with a drink on them or during a storm.

Gray was ‘ill’. We don’t know whether that was Covid or not. He is a great price and will play pretty much every game when fit. DCL and Doucoure are the other ones to consider.

      Keeper fine.

You're not really gaining places from your defense since everyone has those three. Who is your other defender that's not Livramento?

You're barely gaining from Salah/Jota for same reason.

Antonio isn't getting returns = no gain. Dennis is decent.

Watkins... Okay pick but think people over-hyped him because of 2 returns (incl. lucky assist) vs. NOR. Not ale that Ings is coming back and can push Watkins wide.

Then rest of bench is standard.

If we disregard Antonio as blanking, you are entirely reliant on Foden/Bilva/Dennis (and Ramsdale I guess) min order for you to gain rank.

Reliable & double City mids just don't belong in the same sentence IMO.

1FT. Have a strong team and bench, but still, it is tempting to get rid of Foden. Son seems the best option, but would require taking a hit. Bowen seems a good alternative (nailed, in form). Obviously waiting on taking a final decision until close to the deadline (got burned by Watkins last GW).

    Pick one:
    a) Foden -> Bowen
    b) Foden, Watkins -> Son, King (-4)
    c) Save FT

What are people thinking about their GW21 defence?

    - vs. CHE (SGW), Alexander-Arnold
    - vs. ARS, (SGW), Cancelo
    - vs. LIV, (S/DGW), James (etc)

I have these three & Alonso. Fairly likely I sell Alonso for Regulion (etc) as I'm doubled up; Chelsea's fixtures stiffen up & Club World Cup anyway.

There is potential Chelsea get a DGW in GW21. If we did, might start James but up in the air for now.

Are you starting both TAA & Cancelo in a back three in GW21? Benching one, or both?

Have to note that Livramento -may- have a DGW or NEW/BRE, but that could fall in GW22. Nothing confirmed!

Set a reminder for 'Which defender to bench?' ahead of the GW21 deadline.

          This is just pre-empting it.

        Trent, Cancelo, Dalot

Might drop White for Davies, thats about it. Not willing to make any major changes in defense.

Decent. Don't think AWB will get some games if MUN have a DGW (or consecutive DGWs?)

I have DDG so less of an issue - hence the possible TOT defender transfer. (Though to be honest, most possibly GW21 fixture combinations aren't great for defense, even including TOT.)

Yeah, that is an issue I'll be looking at if he gets benched in next 2-3 games. If it looks like he is not nailed, then getting Davies for him is an easy switch.

keep white ,terrific value ,got me 52 in 11 games, 7 cleanies there,7 benches for 11points,had since the start hes nailed and hardly gets a mention on these boards utter bargain at 4.5 look elsewhere...

True, lets see. If at that time, I have cash, then upgrading B. Williams is an easy decision.

            Yeah White is woefully under-appreciated.

I had him earlier and was a star off the bench multiple times.

In the end sold for James, who's got 34 in that period whilst White has quietly got 30 points. (James benched once, got me ESR 7 points off bench, still.)

He's great value. Though not sure for these DGWs.

TAA can haul in a SGW more than a defender in a DGW!

Never bench TAA, Cancelo or James. They can haul in any game.

Wanted cancelo but can’t ignore Spurs’ run and potential doubles so would you do:

      Livra > Reguillon instead?

Downgrade a Chelsea defense to Reg if you have a double up. Cancelo is arguably the best defender in the game considering his price.

You'll risk rank drops if you keep ignoring cancelo

If you’re blind and can’t see the havoc Cancelo is wreaking then I would do that move otherwise Cancelo is close to essential and the best City player you can get. Just go take a look at his returns.

Not sure on my bench decisions, help?

      Sanchez (Steele)
Alonso / Cancelo / TAA / Tierney (Livra)
Silva / Bowen / Jota / Salah (Allan)
      Dennis / Ronaldo (Antonio)

Feel like I should be playing Antonio? I have 1 FT btw

Definitely form (Dennis) over fixture (Antonio). It’s about time we learnt from our mistakes. Even if Antonio hauls next game it’s still the right decision, hind sight doesn’t help

The conundrum is Dennis (form) over Antonio (fixture).

Could bench Alonso, we might concede. But a risk if we keep a CS.

Have to wait on Watford news I guess.

If Dennis was priced at Antonio’s price and vice versus I’m sure you’d be benching Antonio

Roumors on twitter/wh forums abd reddit say Antonio has Covid.
Local press doesn't have him in predicted line ups and they often have the info but don't release names due to ethical reasons.

      Still only rumours.

I hate Antonio, its a strong word but I do. His yellow card and withdrawal after 45 minutes in the last game 2 seasons ago was the reason I had my first and only season outside top 100k. He only needed to get 2 points. All the blanks he got now only to miss the good run. That dude

Yeah he’s not the focal point anymore. Returns spread across the team too much now he’s just simply really pissed me off. He’s gonna for Ronaldo and even if he hauls next game he’s not coming back.

So new government guidelines stating that you only need to isolate for 7 days now rather than 10 providing you have a negative test. Good news for FPL I guess.
