What can FPL managers expect from Unai Emery at Aston Villa?

Steven Gerrard’s departure from Aston Villa has preceded the appointment of Unai Emery as the club’s new head coach.

The former Arsenal boss, who had been in charge of Spanish club Villarreal since leaving the Premier League in 2019, will take over from November 1st after his work permit formalities are completed.

That means his first Villa match will be the visit of Manchester United in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 15.

Here, we take a look at Emery’s tactics and management style and ask what we can expect from the 50-year-old Spaniard.

THE HISTORY

After a playing career mostly spent in Spain’s second tier, Unai Emery came to prominence as a coach when he guided Almeria to La Liga promotion in 2007. He subsequently moved to Valencia, where he delivered three consecutive third-placed finishes, before a brief spell at Spartak Moscow.

He returned to Spanish football in 2013 with Sevilla, winning the Europa League three times in three seasons. That European success led him to take over at Paris Saint-Germain, where he won Ligue 1 in 2017/18. In two years at PSG, he delivered seven of the 10 available trophies, but was eliminated in the Champions League last-16 by Barcelona, having won the first leg 4-0, and then Real Madrid.

Emery then coached Arsenal between the summer of 2018 and November 2019 following the departure of Arsene Wenger, guiding them to a fifth-place finish before being sacked. The impression many have is that things did not go well for him in north London, yet it’s worth noting that in his first season he went 22 games unbeaten and also took Arsenal to the final of the Europa League, where they lost to Chelsea.

“The first season at Arsenal was very good. We were close to returning to the Champions League coming to the end of the season, but we were playing the Europa League final. We lost our way with all the energy we put into this final. I believe the season would have been perfect if we had qualified for the Champions League.” – Unai Emery

“Five captains left in the first year, there were many changes and patience was needed. It was not an easy process. The fans did not have patience. Xhaka had problems with the fans and in the dressing room where other experienced players did not understand his role as captain. Xhaka was an important player for me — he was a good person, very committed to his coach. The club was happy with me, but the fans were calling for a change, and it had to happen.” – Unai Emery

His time at Arsenal also saw the emergence of young players like Bukayo Saka (£7.9m), Gabriel Martinelli (£6.8m) and Emile Smith Rowe (£5.6m).

“That was the change. Saka and Smith Rowe began to play with me. I gave Saka his Premier League debut against Fulham, on January 1, when he was 17. You had to work with these young players, to replace those who were there before. Gabriel Martinelli, who arrived then too — I knew he was a player who would grow.” – Unai Emery

Since his dismissal by Arsenal, Emery has rebuilt his reputation at Villarreal, beating Manchester United in the 2021 Europa League final and taking them to last season’s Champions League semi-finals, defeating Bayern Munich and Juventus on the way.

FAVOURED TACTICS

“Emery put on so many videos I ran out of popcorn! He’s obsessed with football – it’s practically an illness. He’s one of the best managers I’ve had. I worked with him for three years. I couldn’t handle a fourth!” – former Valencia winger Joaquin

Unai Emery has used a mixture of formations throughout his career, but has generally preferred an organised 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 at Villarreal.

In either system, they attack in a narrow shape with inverted wide midfielders.

One forward often drops a bit deeper in order to link play, while the other looks to get in behind, which could potentially suit Danny Ings (£6.6m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.2m) as a partnership.

“I like to work hard on the details, to know the players well. Difficult games motivate me a lot. You try to surprise the rival coach, for your team to be better than them tactically” – Unai Emery

Further back, the two banks of four players provide good defensive stability. Indeed, Villarreal have conceded just seven goals in 11 La Liga matches this season, also boasting the joint-fourth best defence in 2021/22, despite finishing seventh overall.

Villa, it’s worth noting, beat Brentford 4-0 at the weekend with caretaker manager Aaron Danks opting for a 4-2-3-1 formation, showing the players currently at the club are capable of playing in that system.

Above: Aston Villa’s starting XI v Brentford in Gameweek 13

THE PROSPECTS

Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman on Villa under Gerrard and his Gameweek 13 plans 6

Unai Emery has certainly got his work cut out at Aston Villa after the club’s poor start to the Premier League season.

Ahead of Gameweek 14, they have won just three of their 12 games, sitting mid-table for goals scored (11) and goals conceded (16).

Their underlying numbers, meanwhile, paint a similar picture:

Total (rank v other Premier League sides)
Minutes per xG77 (12th)
Minutes per xGC75.8 (8th)

However, Saturday’s 4-0 win over Brentford has lifted the mood around Villa Park and showed that creative players like Emiliano Buendia (£5.7m) and Leon Bailey (£4.6m) can thrive in the right set-up.

Both players could potentially fit Emery’s style, too. The Spaniard likes quick wide players like Arnaut Danjuma at Villarreal, so Bailey’s pace and ability to carry the ball at speed could be utilised. FPL managers have had a frosty relationship with the Jamaican this season, but when breaking down his actual returns (0.53 attacking returns – be it a goal or assist – per 90 minutes), he could become a viable fourth/fifth midfielder if handed regular starts.

Emery also loves aggressive/hard-working players, but ones who have the technical ability to execute his game plan, attributes Argentinian playmaker Buendia possesses. Further forward, Watkins could potentially benefit, with his physical attributes and pace likely seeing him become a key man alongside the more poacher-like qualities of Ings.

Saying that, the consensus amongst Villarreal fans is that their team weren’t always fun to watch under Emery in La Liga – despite racking up 60 or more goals in each of the last two seasons – so a more balanced approach is probably what to expect, at least in the early stages.

It’s a tough spell for Aston Villa prior to the World Cup, too, with in-form Newcastle United up next in Gameweek 14. That will be caretaker boss Aaron Danks’ final match in charge, with Unai Emery in the dugout for the Manchester United fixture at Villa Park in Gameweek 15. Villa then round off their schedule with a trip to take on Brighton and Hove Albion, at which point we pause for the winter World Cup.

As a result, most FPL managers won’t be looking to invest to begin with, but if Bailey, Buendia, Watkins and Ings are to continue getting the nod in the attacking positions, they could potentially provide value in the budget/mid-price categories.

Emery’s ‘to-do’ list at Villa is extensive, but with his past record, playing style and ability to dip into the transfer market in January with significant funds, Villa could provide several value options in the second half of the season.

Alright I'm gonna open myself up to ridicule now. But here goes...

I think this might be the week to go Salah (c) over Haaland.

Leeds are very poor defensively and they had their first choice LB (Struijk) out injured last game. Leeds are also the sort of team that will play into Liverpool's hands in a way that a team like Forest wouldn't. The game is at Anfield for maximum home support.

Meanwhile, Haaland is playing away in the early kickoff against Leicester. 4 cleansheets in the last 5 games for Leicester. As a non-Ward owner it's been quite frustrating. Haaland also went off at half time tonight after being very ineffective in the first half. Yeah you could see it as him being rested for the game but that performance wasn't the most encouraging and gives hope that he might not be in peak condition.I think the upside is there and the chance of a Haaland blank are a little higher than last week.

I'm not gonna lock myself into it but I'm really seriously considering it. Of course the egg on face potential is extremely high and I've been a big proponent of capping Haaland every week since the CPL hat-trick. But the above factors to me point to this being a closer week than any of the last few in terms of going Salah over Haaland.

same for me tbf I am tempted.

if Thiago is back as well as Trent starting then the team will be alot stronger than the last game.

only thing is Thiago was pictured back in training so that might be something to monitor.

I'm not doing great down to 900k from 400k, so need to take a risk to catch up.

It's logical and won't be surprised if it works out. Should you be prepared to take on the worst scenario then that's high risk high reward option. Key thing is LIV performance has not been great and neither has Salah been.

You are right. The stats and the eye test both favour Darwin.
And I still wouldn’t captain him over Haaland 🙂

Admire the idea and don't disagree that Leeds will play into Liverpool's hands, just mentioned earlier that I've gone from planning on benching Robbo and Firmino to thinking of playing both after watching MOTD, Leeds are so narrow and very vulnerable to corners and crosses.

However, people really are overestimating Leicester from recent results. Clean sheets and 2-0 and 4-0 wins against Leeds and Wolves respectively - both in the bottom 3 - despite losing the xG battle in both matches. Conceded a LOT of shots in their box to Wolves in particular, very easy to carve open as Leeds showed (but both teams' finishing has been so poor). The other clean sheet was against Palace who have been awful on the road, no wins and 3g in 5 games (one being an OG). It's overthinking, Leicester are still a really vulnerable team defensively.

17 goals in 11 games is unheard of in premier league history

He has to be captain until he blanks consistently, which he doesnt look like doing

If Haaland didn't exist and it was between Salah and Kane then.... I would pick Kane

      Mitrovic or Salah

      Yeah i would pick Mitrovic

I get the not capping Haaland bit but capping salah right now just seems far fetched

His performances just cannot be ignored. I don’t care what stats say, he’s been horrendous

If anything I am thinking of captaining Kane or saka/Martinelli

Surely if you are going different you look for a team or a player in some sort of form.

        Its always been about form

Would you captain Ronaldo if you knew he was starting?

Salah has been one of the best players in premier league history but his form and Liverpools has not been great for a while now

I just don't get it, we will get masses of people wanting to captain a 34 year old Salah who has scored 7 goals a season for the last 4 years in 2026 just because its Salah

    Hey guys!!!!

my team for this week currently is:

    Raya/ Iversen

Van Djik Tripper Cancelo/ Doherty Tarkowski
    Salah Zaha Foden Martinelli/ Andreas
    Scamacca Solanke Haaland

    (0.2 itb 1ft)

I'm unsure who to bring in from the below, I have several options:

    1. Van Djik and Solanke to Gabriel and Mitrovic for -4
    2. Scamacca to Mitrovic for free
    3. Van Djik to Gabriel for free
    4. Bench Solanke and play Periera in a 3-5-2
    5. Van Djik and Solanke to Ben White and DCL for -4
    5. Other?

    thanks alot guys!!!!!

Why do you want to sell VVD or Scamacca? They are the least problems in your team.

I would sell Salah and Solanke as I think they limit your squad potential. And, then think who I could bring in with the money generated. Maybe Rashford / Saka and Darwin / DCL / Toney.

Just stick with Guehi. He has an OK fixture at home v Soton this GW

You're probably not going to play him against Chelsea I assume, so you're realistically looking at two games where he should have decent clean sheet potential. Question then is, is it more worthwhile to wait another week and target a different change with that FT instead that you think can get more than 12pts or so in 2 games?

Guehi GW14 (SOU) and GW16 (nfo) is decent enough for possibly 1 CS so it's only 4 pts upside for White. The 2 FT GW15 feels like more potential gain.

White has attacking return potential. Guehi hardly any

I wouldn’t say hardly any. He produced 18 shots in the box in 2021/22, at least three times the total of any other Palace defender. White has significant assist potential though.

    What combo till the WC?

    A. Almiron + DCL
    B. Rashford + Scamacca
    C. Martinelli + Scamacca

I was looking at Wilson but expecting a bounce from Villa with the new manager considering they had a bounce for removing the last one

That's a tough one. I quite like A if DCL can keep himself fit.

        A.

But I've had Almiron for weeks. Been a brilliant FPL asset.

Don't know what the 'trust' issues are. Confidence is a big thing in football, and he has it at the moment.

I know, Almiron is a great asset.

The trust issue is my problem, not his. I can't seem to trust him having watched him over the last few seasons. I always keep thinking that he will go back to his previous playing ways. He is like a man reborn and I can't bring myself to believe it.

This happens in football. Players go from being cack to looking world beaters - and the other way around.

Often has a lot to do with a move to a new club or a change of manager. But he looked to me years ago that he had good technique. But you've obviously seen things close up and differently. Newcastle supporter?

Then there was the Grealish comment...

I completely understand that happens in football.

I am not a Newcastle supporter myself but I watch a lot of Newcastle games due to family reasons. I have seen so much of Almiron that I am still struggling to believe. I suppose I have to adapt quickly to the change, before it is too late.

Help appreciated. Plan was to go Zaha/Barnes > Saka/Martinelli this week but now I'm thinking I use my FT to ditch Zouma/Webster > Ben White/Schar.

    Guaita
    Doherty - Zouma - Cancelo
    Foden - Salah - Zaha - Andreas
    Mitro - Haaland - Jesus

    Ward - Barnes - Neco - Webster

    A) Save
    B) Zouma/Webster > White/Tomayisu/Schar
    C) Barnes > Martinelli
    D) Zaha + Barnes > Saka + Martinelli (-4 and for exact funds - if one player drops/rises I'm priced out)
    E) Something else

On taking off Erling Haaland and Joao Cancelo at half time, he added: "Erling has had a bit of a fever before the game. Joao had a bit of a kick on his foot, that's why we changed it."

It’s Cancelo that got the kick not Haaland

Fabian Schar people, still only 12.2% owned and top 4 in the defenders rankings. View his stats, he is ok for a big haul soon.

Quality pick. But if you have Pope/Trippier plus an attacking asset, it's getting a bit overloaded.

But defensively Newcastle are great. And when he played for Basel, Schar used to get a lot of goals. Have him in my Sky Sports team.

Was just reading an article today about how Howe targeted Spurs' backline with high balls from their defenders and Schar is certainly good at those. I've had a brief look at fixtures post-WC and I'm sure I'll at least hold Trippier and get a Newcastle attacker. Not sure if I'd double up in defence but if I do I'm sure Schar will be my first choice

Would appreciate your thoughts on this team with 1 FT, 1.0 ITB (assuming no injuries/suspensions).

    Pope
    Cancelo Trippier Guehi
    Salah Foden Martinelli Zaha
    Haaland Mitrovic Bamford

    Ward Andreas Dunk Neco

    A) Bamford > Jesus
    B) Salah & Bamford > Saka & Kane (-4 pts)
    C) smth else?

      Very similar to my team.
I have Kane instead of Bamford, and Almiron instead of Zaha.

      Bamford > Toney?
Or Scamacca? (but does get subbed off to give Antonio minutes)

Last chance saloon for Salah though.

Annoyed I went Foden instead of Saka last week. So for this GW...

    A. Foden > Saka now (before Saka's possible price rise)
    B. As above, but wait until after Arsenal's game, and lose 0.1 if needs be
    C. Keep Foden and roll the FT?

Where would you upgrade this team? 2.3 ITB

    Pope (Iversen)
Cancelo Trippier Gomez (Guehi) (N. Williams)
    Saka Martinelli Zaha Foden (Andreas)
    Haaland Mitrovic Kane

Cancelo + Zaha --> Arsenal defender + KDB would be my move for that team. Chasing points in City attack.
