FPL notes: How did Isak and Wilson fare ahead of Double Gameweek 36?

The key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) notes, quotes and statistics from Newcastle United v Arsenal and West Ham United v Manchester United are covered in our Scout Notes.

As ever, all the Opta player and team numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area – and you can access them yourself for free with a seven-day free trial.

ISAK + WILSON START TOGETHER

Eddie Howe named Alexander Isak (£6.9m) and Callum Wilson (£7.1m) in the starting XI for the first time on Sunday. Often heralded as Newcastle’s ‘Plan B’, the pair had the opportunity to impress from the outset but failed to make much of an impact against a resilient Arsenal side.

Isak, deployed on the left wing in Howe’s 4-3-3 formation, had a fair bit of tracking back to do but was livelier after the break, hitting the post from a close-range header.

Wilson, meanwhile, had a couple of half chances but couldn’t get his shots off, failing to register a single effort on goal. He only managed 19 touches, too, fewer than any other starting player.

Howe ended the experiment on 77 minutes, withdrawing Wilson, with Isak playing the remainder of the game through the middle.

It remains to be seen if both players will start in Double Gameweek 36, although it is a three-game week, so Howe could potentially look to protect Wilson by resting him in one of those games. That is, however, just speculation at this stage.

  • Saturday 13 May: Leeds United (a) – Double Gameweek 36
  • Thursday 18 May: Brighton (h) – Double Gameweek 36
  • Monday 22 May: Leicester City (h) – Gameweek 37
  • Sunday 28 May: Chelsea (a) – Gameweek 38
GAMEWEEK 35: ISAK V WILSON

TRIPPIER BLANKS AGAIN

Another blank for Kieran Trippier on Sunday means FPL’s top-scoring defender is averaging just 2.6 points per match across his last 14 appearances.

It was a difficult afternoon for the England right-back on Sunday, with Gabriel Martinelli (£6.7m) causing plenty of problems down his flank. Still, he created four chances for his team-mates and came extremely close to an assist, when his free-kick delivery was met by Fabian Schar (£5.1m), only for Aaron Ramsdale (£4.8m) to pull off a great save.

Another talking point is that Trippier had the ball in his hand when Newcastle were awarded a first-half penalty. However, it was later overturned by VAR, and he would presumably have handed it over to either Wilson or Isak at the last minute anyway, which has happened before.

Newcastle’s defence has generally been sound this season, but the Gunners found lots of gaps in the back four. Having conceded again, it’s now just one clean sheet in 14 matches for the Magpies.

As for Schar, he ends Gameweek 35 on -2 points, courtesy of an own goal and late booking.

“We are disappointed as I don’t think we defended as well as we have done for the majority of the season.” – Eddie Howe

ODEGAARD INSPIRES

Martin Odegaard (£6.7m), arguably one of the players of the season, was excellent at Newcastle, as Arsenal kept their Premier League title hopes alive.

After scoring a midweek brace, the Norwegian was at it again with a superb low strike that found the inside corner of the net. He looked almost certain to add a second, too, but was denied by the impressive Nick Pope (£5.4m).

It means Odegaard has 15 non-penalty goals in 34 Premier League appearances for Arsenal this season, a record most strikers would be proud of. Throw in eight assists, and it’s no surprise to see him move up to second in the midfielder standings, only behind Mohamed Salah (£13.1m).

Elsewhere, it was Martinelli’s low cross that Schar diverted into his own net, while the Brazilian also curled a shot against the bar.

The clean sheet, meanwhile, is Arsenal’s first since losing William Saliba (£4.9m) to injury in Gameweek 27. In an assured display, £4.0m defender Jakub Kiwior partnered Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.2m) at the back, earning his second consecutive start.

FATIGUE AT MAN UTD?

In a poor performance, Man Utd lost 1-0 at the London Stadium, a match in which West Ham could and probably should have scored more.

The only goal of the game was scored by Said Benrahma (£5.5m), his tenth of the season, from a David De Gea (£5.0m) howler. The Spaniard has now made four errors leading to a goal in all competitions this season, the joint-most of any Premier League player, along with Hugo Lloris (£5.4m).

Marcus Rashford (£7.3m) looked the most likely ‘red’ to make something happen, attempting five shots, but they have now lost consecutive matches to nil, scoring just one goal in their last three.

The squad is certainly stretched by injuries, but is fatigue creeping in, too? Today was after all their 57th game of a gruelling season, and they still have another five games to play before the curtain finally comes down on 2022/23.

The good news is they don’t play again after today until Saturday when Wolverhampton Wanderers visit Old Trafford in Gameweek 36.

  • Saturday 13 May: Wolves (h) – Gameweek 36
  • Saturday 20 May: Bournemouth (a) – Double Gameweek 37
  • Thursday 25 May: Chelsea (h) – Double Gameweek 37
  • Sunday 28 May: Fulham (h) – Gameweek 38
  • Saturday 3 June: Man City (n) – FA Cup final

“Of course, disappointment with the result, same as Thursday [against Brighton]. We lost for ourselves and now we have one week, the first time since Christmas, we need energy because both second halves were below standards.” – Erik ten Hag

As for West Ham, they should be safe now on 37 points, and they still have to face two of their relegation rivals – Leeds United and Leicester City – during the run-in.

    TAA* Porro Dalot
    Salah KDB Rashford Mitoma March

    ¦ Akanji Toti Greenwood

The following move leaves me with exact money for... March -> Bruno in 37

      Jota to Wilson(DGW) in GW36

Pause on TAA now you have in & his playing in mid-field keep for GW37 home to villa
then can decide FH for GW38 with time to spare

Morning folks, any idea what to do here? Currently have 4 doubles. 0.0 itb

    Steele
    Trippier TAA Guehi
    Salah Rashford March Eze
    Haaland Kane Isak

    Raya Martinelli White Moreno

    A) save FT
    B) Kane to Wilson (frees up funds for 37)
    C) Martinelli to Willock (bench Eze)
    D) any other suggestions?

    Toying with these options:

    1) 36: Watkins to Greenwood, 37: Tripp Grealish to Ake KDB

    2) 36: Botman Watkins to Toti Wilson, 37: Salah Grealish to KDB Bruno -4

    3) 36: Botman Watkins to Lindelof Wilson, 37: Salah to KDB

    Thoughts?

      Hi Atimis,

Do you have any chips left?
Option 4. if no then if not needed go for roll ft for GW 37 and play Botman (DGW)

36: Have you managed to cover the DGW players needed with Brighton/Newcastle players & choice of how many?

      37: DGW - Brighton/Chelsea/Manchester City/Manchester United
37 Personally now in your squad would keep Salah as his scoring & Liverpool pushing for top four with good fixtures in GW37/GW38
37:I was going for 3 Brighton/3 Man City but now unsure as scare of rotation on both as both have DGW's.
Others with DGW Man United/ Chelsea - Possible 2 Man United players/unsure if left field a Chelsea player now pressure off.

Liverpool fixtures GW37/GW38 do look good although only SGWs - I'm most likely going to keep Salah with fixtures

Different team different set up. You can't compare imo. Torres scored for fun at pool and flopped at Chelsea and so ? Why the need to compare the leagues anyway? Premiership is all about money money money this will be the death of football eventually.

    Isak vs Wilson.

I don't think I actually have a preference at the moment. I think I'll wait for the team leaks and I'll pick whichever one starts and captain against Leeds.

I'd expect Isak to start against Leeds. It was Wilson who came off yesterday and Isak has usually been first choice since they've both fit. If Longstaff is back then Joelinton may play left wing. If Longstaff isn't back then ASM or Gordon might start there.

If Wilson is benched then he should come on as a sub. He might then start against either Brighton or Leicester, as Howe has rotated when there is a quick turnaround in games.

So you think both with get the same amount of playtime roughly. I think this will likely be the case.

I personally think, and it's my opinion, that Isak is first choice. Yesterday both started, but that could have been because Joelinton was needed in midfield, ASM just back from injury and Gordon not convincing. That allowed Howe to try Isak on the left wing, which was previously plan B.

Wilson has started against West Ham and Everton when Newcastle have had midweek games. If this pattern remains then maybe Wilson starts against Brighton, but given the time between matches, it could also be Leicester that he gets a start.

Just my thoughts given how they have lined up the last few months and I'm definitely not a confidant of Eddie Howe! Also what they do on the pitch with the minutes given is obviously something different to starts.

Howe confirmed both started yesterday due to Longstaff being unavailable and a "gap" in the team allowed him to do that.

Not sure there are any reliable ITK for Newcastle lineups. There was quite a bit of local chatter yesterday about Botman being injured and out. One thing that could be an indicator is whether Wilson has a big smile on his face in photos when they arrive at Elland Road.

Yup agreed with your Longstaff comments.

For DGW36 captaincy, I would prefer to target the one starting CF against Leeds.

I wasn't able to catch much of the game yesterday, did you think Isak was ineffective in the LW role? I only saw the last 20-25 mins or so, where he looked like he was trying to make things happen but it wasn't really happening, looked a bit more threatening with Wilson off and with him central, but I'm not sure how to judge with the game pretty much done by then and with someone as important as Guimaraes having such a poor game.

Yeah, hard to judge on that game. Arsenal were the better team. Bruno G has been struggling with an ankle injury for some time, but we don't have the numbers in midfield to rest him. It's an area that Howe will be looking to strengthen.

Isak hit the post with a header when he came in from the left. He looked better later in the middle in my opinion. ASM showed some flashes when he came on on the left and forced a good save. Wilson didn't have his best game upfront, but didn't really get any chances. Most chances fell to Murphy, Willock and Schar.

Thanks for the reply. I'll try watch some in-depth highlights as well, think I'm leaning towards captaining Isak over Wilson now given Howe seems to prefer him

Really helpful thread here since I haven't been able to see any games this weekend. Hopefully I'll be able to catch up but just want to say a big thank you to Hairy Potter - your comments have been a huge help to me in figuring what to do with my Newcastle players lately

No worries, just my opinions based on what Howe has done in the past. I was actually surprised that both started yesterday, if I'm honest! Good luck this GW!

Hopefully Newcastle bounce back and perform in the DGW to secure top four. Quite a bit of pessimism among my mates given early kick off on Saturday and Brighton's ability to play through the high press. We'll see.

is it a sackable offence for erik if united dont get 4th?its entirely possible. couple of draws and liverpool win all their games and pools GD puts them ahead . would be a disaster for them. maybe the league cup saves him but i think a lot of managers might get the boot after missing out of CL two seasons in a row at a club of that stature

Of course he wouldn't be sacked esp in what is still a transitional period for the club, but given the positions ManUtd were in before these two losses and being 2-0 up against Sevilla in the EL, ending up with just the league cup and no CL would be a disaster. But you'd be forgiven for forgetting how much of a messy season it's been. Getting outclassed by Brighton in the first game, getting hammered by Brighton, Ronaldo's endless issues and eventual exit, etc.

Maybe a reality check after all the hyperbole after the League Cup win. Also winning a trophy shouldn't be dismissed. He's doing a decent job with the squad of internationals available.

As a neutral, he seems a decent coach. Whether Man Utd are better than recent seasons is debatable. They still seem to be overly reliant on a few players doing something special. I don't watch them every match, but it's not clear to me what their style of play is meant to be.

Man Utd fans maybe need to get over the extremes in reaction to wins and losses. They are either the greatest or the worst from week to week. Not sure all the ex-player pundits help with this cycle.

we have to have a plan for a replacement though which i doubt the glazers have it still wouldnt have been a bad season considering the amounts invested in our own squad relative to the crazy money city liverpool arsenal etc have been spending i wonder if we should maybe give arteta a chance
