Pre-Season

Midweek Friendlies Round-Up – Monday and Tuesday

Eight Premier League teams were in action over Monday and Tuesday as the friendlies schedule continues to pick up pace. Olivier Giroud found the net once again for Arsenal, Nicolas Anelka struck twice for West Brom, Man United lost for the second time in three games under David Moyes, while Shola Ameobi scored for the second match running as Newcastle managed a draw in Portugal. Here’s a brief round-up of the action, with some relevant quotes thrown in:

Nagoya Grampus 1 Arsenal 3
Olivier Giroud took his pre-season haul to six goals in three games by notching the Gunners’ opener with just three minutes on the clock, courtesy of a Tomas Rosicky assist. A foul on the Frenchman allowed Ryo Miyaichi to score from the spot, while Theo Walcott scored the third – his second strike in three appearances. Wojciech Szczesny (back) and Laurent Koscielny (knock) missed out for the visitors and with Thomas Vermaelen absent from the tour with a back injury, Bacary Sagna filled in at centre-half alongside Per Mertesacker. Wenger also confirmed that Nacho Monreal “looks likely” to miss the start of the season with a back problem, leaving Kieran Gibbs as the only cover for the left-back berth.

After the match, the Frenchman spoke to the club’s official website and attributed his flourishing form to an increase in self-belief:

“Confidence makes all the difference. Confidence is the first thing you have to work on, you have to work on your mental [side of the game] and keep going. It is something you must have when you are a football player. “I don’t really feel different compared to last year but maybe I know my teammates very well now so I am more confident and I feel ready on the pitch. I do things naturally and we find each other better on the pitch. We have a better relationship now and I really want to do my best for this season.”

Puskas FC Academy 0 West Brom 3
Nicolas Anelka was at the double as the Baggies swept aside their Portuguese opponents on Monday afternoon. Having rolled out a 4-3-1-2 formation for the previous game against Hamburg, Steve Clarke changed system again and began the game with a 4-3-3, fielding Shane Long and Markus Rosenberg on either side of the Frenchman. Clarke made seven changes just after the hour mark and tinkered with his team’s shape once more, moving to a 3-5-2 for the last 30 minutes. Graham Dorrans slotted home the third from the spot late on but it was Anelka who was the recipient of Clarke’s post-match praise; an indication, perhaps, that the 5.5 priced Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward is set to play a significant part for the midlands outfit in the season ahead:

“I never had a doubt about Nicolas because I’d worked with him at Chelsea. I was with Avram Grant when we bought him in the January. So I knew the type of person he was, the type of player he is. I’ve one or two good contacts around the football world and I checked him out when he was at Juventus. The fitness statistics and information I got about his fitness was that he was one of the best trainers. He was one of the top performers, in terms of fitness stats, at Juventus. If you can do that at Juventus then you’re fit enough for us…Where he’s been in the football world and what he’s done in the football world tells you that he’s a top quality player and we’re just happy to have him in our group this season.”

Yokohama 3 Man United 2
David Moyes’ side suffered their second pre-season defeat yesterday afternoon. The United boss left out the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick, while Robin Van Persie lasted 45 minutes before being withdrawn as a precaution. Youngster Jessie Lingard continued his impressive form with a third goal in the last two matches, with the visitors’ second coming courtesy of an own goal from centre-half Masakazu Tashiro. Moyes was able to hand Chris Smalling and Ashley Young their first taste of action after both recovered from injury, while Shinji Kagawa climbed off the bench to make his first appearances of the summer after an extended break. After the game, the United boss rolled out an update on the injury situation up front:

“We’ve got a couple of wee worries. Robin just felt his thigh in the first half and we didn’t want to take any chances. Danny Welbeck felt his groin when he came on and we’ve just got to make sure they’re all okay especially with so many games coming up. We’ve still got a few games to play before the season starts when we get back home. As far as we know Wayne [Rooney] is coming on, He’s started light jogging and the feedback I’m getting from the physios is that he’s progressing. Hopefully those dates are still on track.”

Hamburg 1 West Ham 3
The Hammers bounced back from their weekend thrashing at the hands of Mainz 05 to register the fifth win in six pre-season matches. Sam Allardyce started Razvan Rat and Guy Demel in the full-back roles, while James Collins returned after being given the weekend off for personal reasons. Up top, Ravel Morrison and Matt Jarvis were given the nod on either side of Modibo Maiga and Jarvis proved hugely instrumental in the result, supplying assists for all three of the visitors’ goals. Alou Diarra opened the scoring and was quickly followed by James Tomkins before Morrison added the third after his fellow wide man had been fouled in the box – Diarra has now notched twice in pre-season, the same number as Kevin Nolan, while Morrison has found the net on three occasions; more than any of his team mates.

Ahead of a strong run of opening six fixtures, Jarvis – who is 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League – earned the post-match praise of Hammers assistant boss Neil McDonald:

“Matt Jarvis was in excellent form. He got at his man, he crossed the ball, he took his man on and he drove into the box. That’s what we’ve been trying to get him to do since he came to the football club. Hopefully the penny’s dropped and we’ll have a few more performances like that where he’s creating goals and setting chances up for everybody.”

Sporting Braga 0 Hull 0
The Tigers registered their second successive goalless draw in Portugal last night. Steve Bruce’s side had failed to find a way past Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday and, despite handing new boy Danny Graham 60 minutes as he builds up his fitness, Hull once again toiled up top. Sone Aluko impressed after climbing off the bench at the break in a game that saw Bruce utilise South African midfielder Daylon Claasen as a trialist.

Luton 2 Aston Villa 0
Having drawn their opening four matches, Paul Lambert’s side slipped to a first pre-season loss at Kenilworth Road last night. The Villa boss named a second-string starting XI aside from Christian Benteke, who was making his first appearance of the summer as he builds up his fitness. The Belgian lasted 45 minutes before making way, but despite changing the remaining 10 starters on the hour mark, Lambert watched his side fail to turn around the deficit. With many fringe players handed game time, the Villa boss wasn’t too concerned over the result; instead, he took time out to focus on Benteke’s return and revealed he is optimistic over the fitness of a number of omissions ahead of Villa’s next match against Crewe:

“The pleasing thing was Christian being back. Some of his touches were brilliant. He had 45 minutes. He’s only done a bit of training. He’s still got to work on match fitness but that 45 minutes will do him the world of good…We have too many injures at the minute. When you look at the ones missing – the likes of Okore, Tonev, Agbonlahor, Weimann, Helenius – there are a lot of big players absent. We want to get them back. Hopefully there might be one or two back for Friday. We will have to see how that progresses and see how it goes.”

Pacos de Ferreira 1 Newcastle 1
Shola Ameobi scored for the second consecutive match as the Magpies scraped a draw after going down to 10 men. Alan Pardew handed Fabricio Coloccini, Mathieu Debuchy and Hatem Ben Arfa their first game time of the summer, though the Argentine failed to make it to the interval after receiving his marching orders in a bad-tempered affair. Moussa Sissoko was once again fielded behind a lone striker as Pardew rolled out a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa at left-back and Steven Taylor in the centre of defence. Davide Santon – fielded in an advanced position as a sub for Ben Arfa at the break – supplied the assist for Ameobi’s strike, with Pardew making seven changes in total as the game progressed.

Gillingham 0 Crystal Palace 3
Ian Holloway handed new boy Jose Campana his debut, while the Palace boss fielded four trialists in a comfortable win last night. Campana was afforded corner kick duties in the first 45 minutes and had a hand in the opener, when his delivery was cleared by the hosts only for Dean Moxey to find the net. Holloway then changed his entire starting XI at the break and saw Stephen Dobbie contribute with a goal and assist, while Quincy Owusu-Abeyie (trialist) settled the matter with the Eagles’ third.

Is the Quincy Owusu-Abeyie for Palace the same one that's really good on FIFA and has great pace?

So my front line as of now is

    Lukaku Giroud RvW

Is that decent with 2.5 to upgrade any of them to a City striker? I just want to see how City lines up and how well they do under Pellegrini before investing.

The 2.5 gives me room to upgrade RvW to Negredo/Jovetic, and I can get Aguero by swapping out Giroud.

    Boruc (Given)
    Nastasic, Collins, Amorebieta (Chester, Parr)
    Bale, Mirallas, Hazard, J.Cole (J.Thomas)
    v.Persie, Giroud, Berbatov

I quite fancy Norwich this season, so was thinking of Pilkington instead of Cole, or van Wolfswinkel instead of Berbatov, but may give him a few weeks to bed in... thoughts?

There's too much rotation threat in Utd mid/fwd and with their firepower you have to have some coverage... for me, that's reason enough to have van Persie, but as you say, we'll see!

My only fear on Negredo is the Spain fixture just before the start of the season. I have him in at the moment but I'm concerned.

and HBA - I love him but I don't love the Newcastle squad at the moment, particularly the forward line. Any way you can squeeze an extra 0.5m from somewhere and get in Mirallas? Think Mirallas will do a similar job for a better team.

40m is more than anyone should offer for a player who will probably miss 25% of the season through suspensions.

He's also a player who'd have likely been top goalscorer in the Premiership bar that red mist descending over him against Chelsea. Just like many other players his character flaws will be overlooked if the talent is great enough.

In a summer where the market is over inflated above it's normal ridiculous level it would be foolish of Rodgers to value him at anything less given his ability, age and substantial length to run on his contract.

Won't be going to Arsenal anyway, Real Madrid just cashed in on Higuian so expect them to out muscle Arsenal when it comes to funds and the chance of actually winning a trophy once in a while.

What defensive plans are people planning and how much are you willing to spend to implement them?

Lets see if their is a FFS back line template

    For example;

    Migs/4.0 (9.5)

    5.5/(2+2 rotation) (23)

Ok. Just read hot topic about coverage. My opinion incidently is it must be of importance, just, not as some make out.

When speaking about coverage, we usually mean covering attackers from the top sides, so as to tap into their goals. And I thought (seems I was wrong) we all accepted this meant, attacking midfielders and strikers only. It appears some think "coverage" includes getting Lucas, Wilshere, Carrick etc. I thought it went without saying that a cheapish attacking mid like Snodgrass beats a defensive type like Carrick regardless of who they play for or what the fixtures are.

Is coverage not just about covering proper attackers? I use it. But with fixtures. I plan to cover City, Spurs, Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool early on because these are big sides with good fixtures. I also plan to avoid Chelsea at first, then cover them when it seems wise. I am looking at Bale, Walcott, Sturridge, Mirallas and Negredo. When the time comes, Hazard will probably come in for Chelsea. Or whoever is on form. As form is the most important factor. Incidentally, I am also covering Man Utd with Kagawa.

To me, saying coverage isn't an issue makes no logical sense. Of course covering the best attacking sides attackers when they have easy fixtures is a good idea. Statistically, it opens up more. Having an attacker from a side who score 80 goals gives twice the odds of being involved in a goal than a similarly attacking player from a side who score 40.

But on top of form, "one man team-ness" also influences me. Last year, the top men were 1 man team types. Bale, RVP, Suarez, Lambert, Benteke, Michu. These guys all were much better options than their team mates by quite a bit.

NOW. To the issue I want to raise. Given in my book, cover is relatively important at the right times, how do you all view "double coverage"?

It seems most refute coverage and say its the player that matters. But also most say dont cover an attack twice with like Aguero and Silva. Two good players, both good fixtures, both tend to start. So why not prioritise the player in such a time?

How can coverage not be an issue, but over coverage is? Surely the player still is all that matters?

Playing Devils Advocate here a bit. I actually only really double-cover for DGWs (when it is very smart). I dont see it as a wise idea. Just wondering what are peoples views on this tactic. Particularly those who take no notice of "coverage"?

I agree, cover for cover's sake is silly. Why pay 6.0 for a defensive mid who will mostly get 2s and 3s every week and say I have'Liverpool' covered. if you're getting Liverpool cover, get Gerrard, Sturridge or Aspas or no one.

As for United, right now it's RvP or no one for me. We don't know how nailed Kagawa is (though i hope the answer is very) or in what role he will be used (though I hope it's CAM). If these things happen then Kags is an insane bargain. But too much is still up in the air at United to make anyone other than RvP worthy of investment at this point

Just as an example: I have been sorely tempted by City's opening fixtures to the point of considering 3 attacking players (Silva, Neg, Kun) to cover all bases should they achieve some big hauls in the first 6 weeks or so.
Last season we saw a lot of big scores and rarely is it just 1 player having all the input/points.

This would obviously be very risky, but the rewards are potentially massive. Such is the nature of the game.

This is my point. It is a lot off eggs in one basket.
It then adds "non coverage" of other sides too. As you cant have em all.
Are you really considering it? It is dangerous, but if city start like 2 years ago, your laughing.

Long way to go in the transfer window yet, but I have made a draft of what that team might look like.

Still has Hazard, Coutinho/Gerrard, and Giroud (or Walcott, Sturridge) for that side of things. Could possibly squeeze RVP in there too now that Bale is potentially leaving.

Tis dangerous, but something to consider. City are the only team, for me, looking assured at the moment since they have all their transfer business done and dusted. Things will change, of course 🙂

^^^This. I think the word coverage is being misused a bit on this site -- people aren't buying shares or portions of big attacking returns when getting one of a host of good options, they're buying tickets in hopes of cashing in. Coverage would actually be tripling up so that you have a much greater chance of cashing in on a big attack.

Sanchez, your one man team point is spot on, I think -- we should all be looking for talismen whenever possible, as they are likely more fixture proof as well as more likely to earn a portion of their team's attacking returns.

It is dependant on the player in question and their 'goal involvement'. Talismans like Berbatov and RVP had extremely high goal involvement so on their own they were adequate attacking cover. I think any player with a 25%+ goal involvement is worthy of being considered as cover. Afterall how often do teams get cleansheets compared to goals? yet we don't question a defender as adequate defensive cover. I think thats one for the mathematicians to examine further though.

As for doubling up or tripling up then yes of course you get more coverage. But this has the reverse affect of having less coverage in other teams. And you have to settle for 2nd best and 3rd best attacking cover if you want to triple up. Which imo is inadequate by comparison.

Do you remember a few seasons ago when Chelsea were battering teams like Stoke or Wigan by cricket scores? Having players like Lampard and Drogba was essential even though they came from the same team and it was a major outlay. Sounds obvious but you just need to get the players who will score the most points for the money, be it the likes of Michu or Berbatov who score all their teams points, or Mata and Hazard who get smaller pieces of a bigger pie.

Coverage doesn't matter a whit. If you have walcott giroud and cazorla and the each avg 7ppg over 10 gws you have 210pts plus capt points from them. If you go negredo, walcott and sturridge and they only get 185pts over the same fixtures what was the point in having the "coverage" ?

Get the players that are likely to score the most regardless of whatever team they come from. The only time it becomes an issue is when you want a capt with an easy fixture (if you are not planning on going with rvp or bale each gw).

In short coverage is a stupid notion imo

It reminds me of the Adebayor, Bale, VDV triple up people were doing a few years ago. I wasn't a fan at the time but Spurs were on fire if I remember rightly. I agree though that it should only be used when there is a DGW or a team is in some crazy hot form with extremely good fixtures.

The two players points are not to a certain extent correlated. If you want one of them, then its likely you will want the other. The caveat here is the team cannot be a "one man team". There is no point getting double cover on Spurs, and to a certain extent ManU. Getting Kagawa for cover is just silly atm with Rooney still there 😀

Nobel has played an avg. 25 games the past 3/4 years & as a result, has never broken the 100pt mark.

ok lads, you can read into this what you will, but a piece from today's Manchester Evening News examining how City line up. It does say that Pellegrini doesn't take 1 standard approach, but it offers a look at a likely lineup(s). Not good reading for Negredo bandwagoners. From this it seems Kun and Silva remain the safest bets

That side on the left is what I would say City's best line up is.

I do think they'll play that 4222 system like he did at Malaga. One of the front two plays in a deeper role as in that article and that could be Jovetic or Aguero with the furthest forward Aguero, Negredo or even Dzeko.

Neither Jovetic or Negredo will start enough games to be good options imo, barring injuries, with Aguero a possible option as he could play either role. Hopefully Pellegrini will ease the other two into the PL, leaving him to start all the early games.

    van Persie debate.

When van Persie rose to £14mil and around that figure in last seasons FPL, the common consensus was that if you didnt have him, dont get him. People weren't just afraid of losing his points if they moved him on, the worry was having to spend £14m to get him back.

Starting of at £14m this season, have peoples views changed?

As I said yesterday, if the dreaded happens and Bale does leave Spurs this transfer window, I still wont be getting in van Persie. I assume a lot will, but I just think the money is better spent elsewhere. van Persie's price is basically two players, or one and a half if you have a heavy hitter. I strongly believe that if you pick the two right players, that combined they will outscore van Persie's total returns. Dont get me wrong, van Persie's a brilliant player and I'm not knocking those that pick him at all. Its a clever pick considering the ownership and default captain scenario when you are undecided. I have no agenda, even as a Liverpool supporter. Nor am I wishing him to fail. Like some people do on here if they dont fancy a particular player.

I myself would love to have him in my team, of course I would ideally. With all the others. But the rest of the team looks so weak with him. Last season we could fit him and Bale in and still have great teams. This year it isnt the same. I keep chopping and changing, and whilst having both looks great, I look at the rest of the team and click reset every time. So if Bale does leave Spurs, I wont be rushing to get van Persie in. It feels so wrong saying that of the back of last season, but I honestly think by having van Persie, it will be detrimental across the season. van Persie may score well for you every single gameweek, but what good is it if the rest of the team consistently lets you down? 1 player scoring well is not going to save you, a couple or a few players is not going to save you every gameweek. You need other players, differentials and unlikely players who pop up with returns to bump the scores up and the flexibility to make a quick transfer if its badly needed.

Man United starting fixtures arent the best and they haven't looked so in form in pre season. Would you agree with that? Liverpool and Arsenal on the otherhand have looked very fit and in form. I'm not being bias, just making observations. Its just preseason, we know. But I think fitness counts for a lot here. If players are struggling for fitness and picking up knocks close to the start of the season. Its doesnt go down well for the start of the season. I think it would be very wise to go without at the start. Its not out of the question he will drop in price. People are unbelievably knee jerky at the start of seasons and he will be out in a heartbeat if he blanks at Swansea. Experienced players know that van Persie can blank from time to time, but more often than not he delivers something. But plenty of idiots will move him on at the start if he doesnt bang 10 goals in three games in.

              true about the price drop.

but we have to know that big teams are virtually fixture proof in big games, in fact most of the time it is very open.
RVP is also fixture-proof, that's what makes him so expensive

also, in united's treble season, they lost 2 pre-season game, so it means nothing

I honestly think there is something in this. Especially when a large percentage in the top 10 or so last season for a period of time, DIDNT have van Persie. He was scoring well at the time to!

The thing is players are going to score well all the time. Not just van Persie. If you have 2 or 3 players in a gameweek that do well, you dont NEED van Persie.

Were those top players doing something wrong last season by not having van Persie?

They was obviously doing something right to be where they were, either that or extremely lucky.

I think you are right, I still haven't been able to make a single team with RVP in it. Say you end up rotating the likes of Thomas/Brady/whatever, compared to playing Mirallas and say Sturridge/Giroud.

A point many keep forgetting is that if you go without RVP, you get the extra dosh to upgrade a midfielder or two, PLUS the forward that replaces RVP. It's not just about upgrading your cheapies, you do actually get to pick another forward who could do well, and you are more flexible in terms of playing the fixtures.

You mentioned about 2 players combining score to equal RVP's score. Your forgetting about captaincy aswel

      e.g

RVP gets 10points in GWK1 =10 points make RVP your captain =20 ponits

snodgrass gets 5 and nolan gets 5 points =10 points make one of these your captain = 15 ponits

THEREFORE RVP IS WORTH HAVING FOR CAPTAINCY PURPOSES ALONE!!!!!!!

RVP at 14m is not the equivalent of 2 7m players - the correct maths is actually RVP + 4.5m = 18.5m. Therefore he's equivalent to a 9.5 and a 9. Makes you think, eh?

You can do a lot more, thats for sure.

I've come up with some sexy teams without him. I'd love to have him, it just makes everything else difficult. People will say for a captain choice alone, he is essential.

Does this mean you cant captain anybody else?

Other players do well in gameweeks to!

Very good points but there's one thing you're forgetting to mention: the fact captains get double points.

2 players who score 6 points in a GW with one captian = 18 points. That's also not taking into account that there's probably a higher chance of your captain blanking compared to RVP

1 player who scored 10 points (c) and one player who scores 2 points = 22 points

I'm not saying I disagree, but it's not so black-and-white

You are forgetting capt points but I think bale would get more as capt on avg than rvp in any case.

If we take bale out of the equation then lets work on ppg avg to see which is better. Rvp likely to get circa 6.5ppg x 2 = 13 plus 2 (for your 4.5m mid) = 15points per gw on avg.

Say you spend the 18.5m on just two players sturridge circa 5.5ppg and walcott circa 6ppg x 2 = 12 + 5 = 17points per gw on avg.

I think its cut and dried you are better off without rvp and even more so if you have bale as capt option.
