Scout Notes – Gameweek 28 – Wednesday

David Silva continues his hot streak in front of goal. Eden Hazard shows why he’s worth the hefty outlay, Tottenham’s own Belgian wide man scores on his return to the starting XI, Olivier Giroud inspires Arsenal to their fourth successive win, while Charlie Austin gets his double Gameweek up and running with the R’s consolation.

Hazard the Blues hero

Eden Hazard scored the only goal of the match – his fourth in five away appearances – against West Ham as Chelsea maintained their five-point lead at the league’s summit. The Belgian hot shot is living up his substantial 10.8 valuation, delivering attacking returns on a consistent basis – in the past 12 Gameweeks, Hazard has only failed to deliver a goal or an assist on three occasions, boosting his points per game average to 6.2 – second only to Alexis Sanchez among the FPL midfield roster.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho opted to retain Kurt Zouma in the defensive midfield position he occupied for the Capital One Cup final, allowing Gary Cahill to reclaim the centre-back berth. Oscar returned to the number 10 role, with Ramires lining up on the right flank in place of the benched Willian. The Blues secured their fourth clean sheet in the previous seven Gameweeks, further encouraging investment in the likes of Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry.

The Hammers made one enforced alteration to the side that wilted against Crystal Palace last weekend, reinstating Kevin Nolan for Alex Song. Despite fashioning more attempts at goal (18) than Chelsea (12), West Ham were wasteful, only forcing a save out of Thibaut Courtois on five occasions. Senegalese frontman Diafra Sakho was the chief culprit, only hitting the target with three of his seven attempted shots (the most of any forward this Gameweek) inside the Blues’ box.

Sam Allardyce’s men are now without a win in 11 outings and will be underdogs in their quest to end that inglorious streak when they roll up at the Emirates in two weekend’s time. Beyond the Irons’ fourth London derby in succession, their fixtures turn kinder (SUN, lei, STO) and more conducive to Fantasy returns from Gameweek 29 onwards.

The rising value of Silva

Manchester City kept their fading title hopes alive with a less-than-convincing, yet essential, 2-0 victory over league minnows Leicester City. David Silva was on target for the third week in six, bagging his third goal in as many appearances. The Spanish playmaker has now notched 10 goals this term, eclipsing his previous best of seven in the 2013/14 campaign. Among all the players that have made at least five starts for their club this term, Silva now boasts the fourth-highest points per game average, behind Alexis Sanchez (6.4), Eden Hazard (6.3) and team-mate Sergio Aguero (6.3).

In response to the Sky Blues’ successive defeats in all competitions, manager Manuel Pellegrini enacted a host of changes in the starting line-up, demoting captain Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta, Samir Nasri, Fernandinho and Edin Dzeko to the bench. January signing Wilfried Bony was afforded his first start for the club, with Jesus Navas, Fernando, Bacary Sagna and Martin Demichelis also reinstated. James Milner, who came on for Bony in the final quarter, doubled City’s lead in the 88th minute, netting his third in four appearances, whilst Aguero’s blank means he has now scored in just four of his 11 home appearances this season.

Leicester City stuck with the same XI that earned a point at Goodison Park last weekend, as the Foxes slipped to their fifth defeat in six.

Di Maria’s waning relevancy

Having been subbed off at half time in Manchester United’s match-up against Sunderland last weekend, Angel di Maria received a similar treatment at St James’ Park. The former Real Madrid star was withdrawn by manager Louis van Gaal in the 59th minute for tactical reasons, making a mockery of his £9.5m Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuation. Despite tallying four assists in the Red Devils’ last six matches, Di Maria hasn’t found the back of the net since Gameweek 7. Ally this lack of form with the Argentine’s inability to last the full 90 in recent weeks, and his 13.2% ownership could decline rapidly in the coming days.

United named one change in their XI, as Marouane Fellaini ousted the underperforming Radamel Falcao, which allowed wayne Rooney to shift into the more advanced striker role. Likewise, John Carver made one alteration from the Magpies last league clash, drafting in Ryan Taylor for the injured Massaidio Haidara.

Both Johnny Evans and Papiss Cisse could face retrospective bans after appearing to spit at each other after the Toon striker tackled the United centre-back. For perspective, The FA handed George Boyd a three-match suspension when he was found guilty of a similar offence in March 2014.

Gunners duo on target

Olivier Giroud scored for the third consecutive match as the Gunners secured a 2-1 victory over local rivals QPR. The French forward has cemented his starting berth in recent weeks, notching five goals in seven appearances for the North London club. Alexis Sanchez supplied the second, breaking a four-match goalless run in the process.

In defence, Per Mertesacker replaced Laurent Koscielny in central defence but the latter was quickly called into action after Gabriel Paulista sustained a hamstring injury in the first half. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also lost his starting role, with Tomas Rosicky slotting into the midfield in Arsene Wenger’s 4-1-4-1 set-up.

With regards to the hosts, Charlie Austin and Matty Phillips were both in the points in the first match of the R’s double Gameweek. Austin fired six attempts against the Gunners and claimed his second goal in as many starts to take his tally to 15 for the campaign, whilst the cut-price Phillips now has four assists in as many outings under new boss Ramsey ahead of Saturday’s visit of Spurs.

Chadli back in contention

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino named the same XI that missed out on Capital One Cup glory for Swansea City’s visit to White Hart Lane. Nacer Chadli bagged his eighth goal of the season with a side-footed volley from a Danny Rose cross, while Ryan Mason and Andros Townsend rounded off the scoring in a tense 3-2 victory. Pochettino appears to have lost faith in Mousa Dembele following his error-strewn first-half against West Ham, allowing Chadli to forge a way back into the side and impress the manager. Having taken his chance against the Swans, the Belgian winger looks set to be rewarded with a run of starts as Spurs embark on a largely favourable run of fixtures (qpr, mun, LEI, bur, AVL, new).

Runaway Captain Poll leader Harry Kane drew a blank before being subbed off on 75 minutes, whilst Christian Erisken earned a somewhat fortuitous assist against the Swans. Kane’s early withdrawal bodes well for his starting chances at Loftus Road as he looks to return to scoring form.

Gylfi Sigurdsson announced his return from injury with a goal against his former employers, while Ki Sung-Yeung tallied his third strike in five starts. As evidenced by his 24% ownership, Sigurdsson is well backed by Fantasy managers but with a much lower (5%) ownership, perhaps the 5.0-priced Ki warrants greater investment ahead of Gameweek 29.

Everton plunge further into abyss

Everton are officially in the midst of their worst top-flight campaign for 88 years. In an attempt to reinvigorate the Toffees’ toothless attack, manager Roberto Martinez called up Darron Gibson, Aaron Lennon and Steven Naismith to replace Muhamed Besic, Ross Barkley and Kevin Mirallas. But the new line-up fared no better than last weekend’s XI, as Everton fell to a 2-0 defeat at the Britannia Stadium – their eighth defeat in nine road matches. Unless the cordial Spaniard can rekindle Everton’s season, Goodison Park looks to offer little of interest to Fantasy managers.

The hosts made two changes to the side that triumphed over Hull City last time out, rewarding Peter Crouch for his winning goal with a start up front in place of Mame Biram Diouf and drafting Charlie Adam into midfield for the injured Stephen Ireland. Victor Moses and Diouf – who replaced Crouch around the hour mark – shared the goalscoring duties, as the pair both netted their second in three matches.

The Reds’ imperious rearguard

Liverpool extended their unbeaten streak to 12 matches with a comfortable 2-0 win over Burnley at Anfield. Daniel Sturridge returned to the starting XI and registered his third goal of the season, after Jordan Henderson opened the scoring with his second spectacular strike in as many matches. Raheem Sterling owners were left frustrated after the youngster was moved to the right wing-back berth, as Adam Lallana joined Philippe Coutinho behind Sturridge up top.

Although the Merseysiders’ attack continues to tick over, it’s their new-found defensive solidity that impresses most. Prior to Brendan Rodgers adopting a 3-4-2-1 formation for the clash at Old Trafford, the Reds had only tallied four cleans sheets in 15 attempts. Since that tactical change, however, Liverpool have accrued seven clean sheets out of a possible 13, with six shut-outs in their previous eight outings. Naturally, the stock of key figures in their defence (Martin Skrtel, Alberto Moreno) have risen as a consequence, yet upcoming duels against United and Arsenal in their next three fixtures prevent them from being standout options.

Why does football get in such a moral tiff bout spitting? Yes it's disgusting but wish theyd tackle diving and feigning injury first

Why are diving and feigning injury worse? And the press/pundits never stop talking about diving, it's the thing they get on their moral high horse about most!

If you'd said leg breaking tackles, I might have agreed.

Agreed. Diving is even partially caused by the fact that the refs do not call fouls when they should, unless the fouled player falls. Forwards have to dive to avoid having their legs broken.

Ribéry's career illustrates this perfectly. In his early career he never dived, always fought to stay up or get back up as soon as possible. As a result, he was fouled a lot and won very few free kicks and penalties despite being fouled a lot. And, eventually, in he suffered several ankle and knee injuries in Germany. After a couple of bad injuries, either he had learned it himself or his manager taught him it, but he started to fall when fouled.

If the refs called the fouls even when the fouled player stays up or gets fast up, this shouldn't have happened, but as that is not the case, it was an inevitable solution. Otherwise his career would probably have ended some 4 years ago.

I don't particularly care what football objects to - diving, imaginary yellow waving etc.

Spitting in another person's face is beyond ridiculous though. I can't ever imagine being annoyed enough with someone to want to plaster them in my saliva.

      Keep calm.

Spurs have nothing but the league to play for now, and Kane is clearly number one striker.

At that price, he's a good option - even if his form dips from where it was.

Since taking penalty duties after Arteta's injury:

    - Cazorla has never blanked 3 times in a row.
    - Cazorla has blanked 2 consecutive times on 2 occasions (excluding the current 2 blank streak he is on). He has delivered double figures in the following GW on both occasions.

His next game is at home against an out-of-sorts Westham. Bring on the next haul 😉

    @ Kurtinho, cheers.

Rodgers has made it quite clear that Sturridge will be seeing a lot of game time now so if Lallana is starting ahead of Ibe/Markovic then this means Sterling will continue at RWB rather than in the front 3. Add that to the "tough" next 3 fixtures, seems wiser to keep Eriksen/Caz no?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is Sanchez back or was yesterday a blip?

There has been mounting evidence that the Arsenal man was no longer worth his hefty price tag. Ozil was looking the better bet. But does yesterday's improvement in form, including a considerable increase in goal threat, an indication that he should remain in our teams?

Are those without the Chilean likely to plummet down the rankings in future weeks?

Keep him until the end of season for sure. Every player can have a dip in form, but he is still a great option and so explosive. I got rid of him this week and kept Cazorla. Not sure if he's back tbh but his blip wasn't really only in the 3 games that Ozil has played, he generally wasn't as effective since moving to the left with Giroud back from GWs 15 onwards or so.

I don't feel that I'm in a rush to get him back anyway, at least for the time being.

It was the same case with Costa a few weeks back. I think he is too good of a player to disappoint. I expect a big game against Wesham from him.

From watching the (admittedly limited) highlights on MotD, he seemed a lot more involved in threatening situations.

Off the top of my head I can think of the good Green save in the bottom corner in the second half, as well as the robbing of the last defender and opting to square it instead of rounding the keeper, and a couple of other half chances too. Restored a bit of faith.

mane has a goal too..we all expect sanchez to score at some point of them.

yeah he has the potential and is proven..but 1 goal does not warrant fear for those who does not have him. Someone will get an assist anyway and usually it will be from ozil/giroud...so its not that bad if u do not have him.

        Absolutely.

This the reason for which, I'm more inclined towards having (Ozil + Giroud) pair from Arsenal and Mane (Who looks pretty much nailed on for the rest of the season).

Oh, and please don't think that I am Sanchez hater or something due to my relatively negative comments on this thread, I owned him myself earlier this season and fetched me a lot of points too.

I'll wait for a while. 8 points against a relegation placed side isn't a lot to write home about.

His last big score was the 11th of January. The trouble here sometimes is as soon as a player gets a goal he's magic yet often the same people are dissing Giroud who has been popping in the goals since January and is £3mill cheaper.
Is it because he's expensive and therefore "Must be due"?

Those who saw the game know that he was one on one with Green on one occasion where he tried to pass instead of an easy goal but he had a few more self created chances especially in the second half. He scared the sh*t out of Furlong Hill and Caulker. He liked to run at them and also his stats suggest that he's one to hold. Also his goal was magnificent

I do think that Sanchez has come out of the other end of the small bad patch that he was having.

But I think, the thing that matters here that whether he can yield returns as he was yielding in the absence of Ozil, Giroud and ? No, as far as I can see, he will not. Reason behind it

However, no doubt in my mind, if Sanchez was at 10m atm, I would gladly taken him instead of Ozil, but not at 11.4m, no way.

      I have a mid of Haz-Erik-Ozil-Silva

The one mid I feared would hurt me last night was Sanchez (whom I dropped when injured) and so it proved - dropped to OR 13 from 9. He genuinely looks like doing something all the time.

I don't really want to change this midfield though so I have to leave it. To be honest Ozil could easily have got a pen assist (blatant) and a goal (great Green save) and looked as much a threat. Sometime your horse does not win. Besides Ozil is one of very few differentials if I have any hope of catching No.1 - or at least the England No.1.

That Bayern midfield would be walked over by Arsenal. Alonso alone at the bottom of a central midfield that has two players who are virtually forwards? There's a reason why they don't lineup like that in a big match. They had a pretty similar lineup against Shakhtar and Wolfsburg, with Alonso alone in front of 4-man defence line, once Alonso got sent off and once they lost 4-1 to Wolfsburg. It only worked in 1-0 win against Leverkusen, when Ribéry played almost on Alonso's side as a DM, and against some easier opponents like Freiburg.

      30 at most now imo.

30 sounds reasonable. It's mostly for making wholesale changes to a team wrecked with injuries / fixture changes / DGW

A big blank 33 will causes issue for those without.

Yeah I'm still abit confused with the blank for now but I have my WC intact. Not sure when to use it

To stack DGW players and then keep them?

You can prepare for GW33 without having to worry about GW34 in a way. Plenty will be weak in GW33 if they focus on 34 or vice versa if a big blank.

      No I'd go lower,
      20/30 for me, I'd take 20pts+ now.

That's about right. Otherwise we'd just take 20pt hits half the time.

its very hard to calculate..u have to use it at the right moment in order to be worth it.

but i would say as the season goes by the value will drop..people argue about having more dgw players if u use the WC then..but if the teams involved are all popular teams..many would already have a few of those players in the team. many might just take a -4 or -8 and get similar points as your wc team

If you have three mill and nothing better to do with it. Though you lose a penalty taker.

Any tips on how to improve this team? Have 2 FT and 0m ITB

    Foster (Myhill)
    Terry Clyne Colo (WOLLY Naughton)
    Hazard Sanchez Sterling Eriksen (Boyd)
    Kane Aguero (C) Giroud

Was thinking of just making a switch from Wolly -> Schlupp

    Good move?

Thats the question I want to know also. With Ibe out for now he could play there. But as long Sturridge is up front he might have to stick with that role. It looks like Coutinho and Hendo are playing higher up and with more confidence

damn ... I was thinking about Sterling or Eriksen before this GW ... looks like another big fail by me 🙂

And I sold Coutinho 3GWs ago hell no 🙁

If i had the choice between Coutinho and Sterling the last few weeks I would have swung to Coutinho. But that's hindsight I guess. If Sterling continues to play in this position then I gotta get rid of him ASAP

Can't wait to get Ivan into my team for the first time in years,
Rivals can't really afford him, hopefully he will give me what I want, or am I about to witness the troll I've ever faced!!!

I was at the game last night and it was incredible to see how far he pushes up. It often seemed that their front line was Costa on the left, Oscar/Haz in the middle and Ivan on the right.

    A) Mahrez (HUL)
    B) Eriksen (mun)

    A) prepares me for DGW34, too.

More upside with Schlupp isn't there? Offers a nice rotation with Mane if you have him.

he means if u are playing a lei player u might as well get the defender as he is OOP too..instead of punting a spot in midfield.

      Half an eye definitely.

How many other teams could potentially be put in that double? Don't really want Costa but if Chelsea are the only big team in the double then he's a cert

Not really sure, i've only got 1 Chelsea right now. Thinking of bringing Terry/Costa with my next few transfers, and got to decide which token Leicester player i'll have.

          I've only got Hazard too.

Can do Wollscheid to Ivanovic but that takes up all my money and then I'd have to either swap out Aguero for Costa or make the decision about which midfielder to downgrade.

Eriksen is the obvious answer but the replacements would be around the Ki range

It's a bit tricky to work out until we know more. I've got a wc for 34 if it's a big one but I'll be wanting a decent team for 33 too. What do you do, you can't offload talent early for one gw especially if you're losing a lot of value. I'll probably just improve my bench to cope with 33. Hopefully theyll finalise the dates asap.
