Watchlist

The Watchlist – Papiss Cisse

He may be currently sitting as lowly as 25th in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) rankings for forward but there’s reason to be optimistic for Newcastle’s Papiss Cissé. With former team mate and compatriot Demba Ba now nursing a broken nose and sweating over rotation issues under Rafa Benitez, Cissé is once again afforded the platform to shine as the pivot in the Magpies’ attack.

With just 66 points so far, there’s no doubt Cissé’s prospects during the first half of the season were severely hampered by Ba’s form. After an incredible first Premier League season in 2011/12, which started last January when he joined Newcastle from Bundesliga side SC Freiburg, the potential for him to rack up a sizeable haul over the remaining 13 games is clear. Last term, he amassed an incredible 105 points over 1,829 minutes, netting 13 goals, two assists and 20 FPL bonus points. Spectacular goals, such as his second in Newcastle’s 2-0 victory away to Chelsea last season will live long in the memory.

So far this time round, Cissé has scored five times, assisted one and collected just four FPL bonus points. In addition he has yet to achieve a double digit haul, with the eight points away to Aston Villa in Gameweek 24 his biggest tally so far. With Newcastle splashing their cash across the English Channel to bring in a raft of new French recruits, however, we sense a resurgence for the north east side. Moussa Sissoko, the defensive midfielder turned marauding number 10, has already caught the eye with his brace at home to Chelsea in Gameweek 25. There are clearly goals in this traditionally attacking side and with Cissé nailed on as the central striker in light of Ba’s departure, he may well be set to plunder the points again.

The upcoming schedule plays a significant part in our refresh of the Watchlist rankings. Having notched back-to-back wins over Villa and Chelsea, Alan Pardew’s side are on the cusp of a superb run of games which hands them a superb chance to continue their climb up the table. After a tricky trip to Tottenham, the Magpies welcome Southampton, Stoke, Fulham and Sunderland to St James’ Park in the following eight and also travel to the likes of Swansea, Wigan and West Brom.

On the back of such a stellar debut season, Cissé’s price does count against him, though. Coming in at 8.8 in the FPL game (£9.3m in the Sky Sports game) he certainly offers less value compared to the 6.0 priced Sissoko (£6.3m in the Sky game) but Cissé’s pedigree could just give him the edge. In addition to his Newcastle goal tally of 18 he has scored 37 goals over his 65 appearances for SC Freiburg, 36 during a four-year spell at Metz and 11 goals in 22 appearances for Senegal. With three goals in his last seven, Cissé is starting to hint at a return to form and with Sissoko’s bandwagon keeping the attention away, the forward may well prove a canny differential acquisition with an ownership of just over 3%.

    Supersonic you say sturride wont play as he not trained all week. You do realise limited training would have happened at Liverpool due to most on int duty

    Secondly Liverpool would hardly disclose to press sturridge is in full training after pulling out of the England squad

    Also liverpool main training session happens tomorrow as the game is played on monday

    Refering to the discussion above, is Santon looking like the best choice for a Newcastle defender?

    The fixtures for a defence of MCY, LIV, NEW, SWA, NOR are a thing of beauty for the rest of the season.

        It is if you don't go daft. With the right man management you can play more players over GW26 & GW27 than you could over two normal weeks. If you count a normal week as playing 12 players (2 of them being your captain), you could play 30 players instead of 24.

        Not that I will use the right man management or avoid going daft, of course.

    Do we think Suarez is a must have for this GW? I currently only have Davies, Enrique & Sturridge as DGW cover, and I think I'm down to these 2 options this week - best one?

    (A) Baines & Lambert -> 4.0m defender (Pearce/Mariappa/Wilson) & Suarez(c) [4 point hit]
    - Additional DGWer, obvious captain material and gives the option of Suarez -> Aguero next week. Downside is the 4 point hit, and possible another one next week to get 11 players out (Demel and Marveaux don't look like starting at the moment)

    (B) Szczesny -> Reina
    - Additional DGWer, no hits and a better chance of fielding 11 next week. Downside is his points total this week is unlikely to be as high as the likes of Suarez

    Szczesny, (Bunn)
    Baines, Enrique, Davies, (Harte), (Demel)
    Bale, Mata, Walcott, Fellaini, (Marveaux)
    RVP, Sturridge, Lambert

      Andy suggested to me that this might only apply to teams still in the CL, which would still put United v West Ham at risk. Not sure if this is the case.

      I wonder if there's a difference between the group stage and knockout stage?

      http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2209674/Sunderland-Reading-play-arranged-fixture-December.html

      Sunderland vs Reading wasn't on TV from what I remember, yet they couldn't play theirs during a european week and had to wait until December. Perhaps common sense prevails in the latter half of the season when there is more of a fixture pile up.

    I currently have Walcott, Fellaini, Michu and Mata in my midfield, plus Suarez and RvP as my main forwards.

    I have 2 FT this week, but I'm stuck between 2 scenarios :should I go with A or B?

    A
    This GW :
    Suarez -> Sturrigde
    Fellaini -> Gerrard
    Next GW :
    Michu -> Bale

    Giving me Walcott, Gerrard, Bale, Mata in my midfield... *drool*.....

    OR

    B
    This GW :
    Sagna -> Cuellar
    Fellaini -> Gerrard
    Next GW :
    Michu -> Sissoko

    Bringing Gerrard in is too hard as Mata and Bale are too rampant right now to risk taking out and most Walcott owners will have too much money tied up on him. Very jealous of Gerrard owners mind you, you can just sense it brewing at Anfield.

    It's that time of the year where you are usually concerned about the likes of Man United, City, Arsenal and Chelsea all rotating because of other competitions. It's a minefield now.

      Fellaini, Sissoko and Toure are all tall, strong, aggressive MIDFIELDERS, Luiz is a weedy technically gifted centre back, I'm sorry but I don't get the connection between these players and Luiz, they play in different positions and have entirely attributes. 😉

        David Luiz in 6 ft 2 (taller than Toure and Sissoko) and 185lbs so hardly 'weedy'. He's also been played in midfield this season (and previously) and, prior to this season, had a better goalscoring record than any of the comparisons, despite playing in defense.

        Clear enough? 😉

              Yeah, lots of beer... I prefer liquor in the sense that you're more likely to wake up with a good buzz, which helps you through the first hours at least.

                Good point. With lots of beer on board your more likely to wake up in a pool of piss

          Monreal is cup tied in the CL so he will play in the FA Cup and League. Hopefully Vermaelen will play LB against Bayern.

      Very good. No points hits? I would want one of Michu/Gerrard there too if you can afford it. Captain?

        Thanks! No point hits and got 1 FT left. Was thinking Sturridge captain. Only way I can seem to wangle Michu or Gerrard in would involve getting rid of one of my big 3 mids, and I'm not too keen on that and would lose a fair bit of money on all of them. Just going to take my chances I think!

      personally i'll play Fellaini rather than Cameron. clean sheet is unpredictable.

      United weakness is when facing players like Fellaini, Toure, or other dynamic midfielder 😉

    Anyone else still have their original WC available? Really tempting to play it next week given I'll probably only be able to field 9 or 10 players. Whatcha reckon?

    A) Get 5-6 DGWers this week and WC next week
    B) Stick with 4 DGWers this week and save the WC for later in the season

    Szczesny, (Bunn)
    Baines, Enrique, Davies, (Harte), (Demel)
    Bale, Mata, Walcott, Fellaini, (Marveaux)
    RVP, Sturridge, Lambert

    Bank 1.1m, 1 freebie

      Yeah I've still got my original WC intact mate, but surely it's wiser to save for the potential FA Cup DGW?

    Save WC for multiple DGWs later in the season... due to FA Cup, UCL, UEL, etc...

      Unlikely. Think 80+ will constitute a good score but people will have done amazingly if they get 110+

    So which DGWers are you keeping and which are you shipping after this week?

    I'm shipping either Gerrard or Michu and keeping the other one along with Sturridge and Davies.

      Having sold Tevez for Studge, I have to decied whether to keep him or Saurez? Considering Saurez out for Aguero actually. Studge at 7.6 is a steal if he keeps scoring.
