Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Budget Midfielders

After casting an eye over the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders over the last few days, our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List moves further up the park. This time around, we assess the cut-price midfield options for the upcoming season:

At first impression, there seems to be few genuine contenders in the 4.5 – 5.0 midfield price range. As pre-season friendlies progress, though, we should gradually be afforded a better idea as to how teams are shaping up – whilst the pickings are presently slim, with few standout attacking options currently available, there are, nonetheless, a few cheap rotation pairings on offer:

Coming in at 5.0, Villa duo Fabian Delph and Ashley Westwood both served notice of their eye for goal by finding the net on three occasions last term. Granted, that’s hardly prolific form but if they can kick on from last season’s exploits, they may offer us a viable cut-price option in the centre of the park. Paul Lambert’s side rotate home/away perfectly with West Brom and with Graham Dorrans also setting you back 5.0 for the Baggies, the midlands clubs may come into consideration if they can improve upon last term’s disappointing form.

For Burnley, Michael Kightly (five goals and six assists) and Scott Arfield (eight strikes and a trio of assists) seem the standout options at 5.0 apiece, though with highly-rated right-back Kieran Trippier at the same price, many may overlook The Clarets in the centre of the park. As mentioned in our rotation article, Sean Dyche’s side alternate home/away with Hull over the entire 38 Gameweeks but whilst Tigers duo Robbie Brady and Ahmed Elmohamady also set you back 5.0, the arrival of Robert Snodgrass and Tom Ince is likely to see our attentions focussed on the mid-price bracket for Steve Bruce’ charges.

Elsewhere amongst the promoted sides, Leicester new boy Marc Albrighton has already found his way into a number of Fantasy squads after being priced at 4.5. A peripheral figure at former club Villa, the wide man’s delivery could be key to The Foxes’ chances in the final third and, with few options at that price currently catching the eye, he could become an increasingly popular pick if he nails down a role on the flank for Nigel Pearson’s Championship winners. Winter signing Riyad Mahrez chipped in with three goals and five assists in just 19 appearances in the Championship last term – at 5.0, he’s costlier than Albrighton and will need to be monitored over the upcoming friendlies.

As mentioned previously, Southampton dovetail perfectly with The Foxes over the 38 Gameweeks and could present us with a couple of legitimate options. Analysis of the Player Price List shows that Steven Davis is the only current budget midfielder to have exceeded 100 points in the campaign gone by. The 5.0-priced man served up two goals and seven assists over 34 appearances for the St Mary’s outfit but it’s yet to be seen whether he’ll retain his starting berth under new boss Ronald Koeman – many are hoping the Dutchman hands the similarly-priced James Ward-Prowse a chance to nail down a spot in his XI after the youngster started 16 times in 2013/14.

Liverpool’s Oussama Assaidi comes in at 5.0. The winger’s chances of breaking into the Reds’ first-team look slim-to-none but with Mark Hughes still keen after a relatively successful loan spell at Stoke last season, a move to the Britannia could bring Assaidi into consideration ahead of a schedule which pits the Potters against just three of last term’s top eight in the first 12 Gameweeks. Swansea alternate with Hughes’ side over the entire season and if Ki Sung-yeung (5.0) can nail down a starting berth upon his return to the Liberty, pairing him and Assaidi may yet be an option. Stoke’s Stephen Ireland also sets you back just 5.0 and started seven of the last eight games he was available for last season – there’s question marks as to whether he can retain the role in “the hole” as Hughes strengthens in his second season at the helm, though.

Newcastle’s new boy Jack Colback may be one to consider. Despite moving to St James’ Park from neighbours Sunderland, the 5.0 midfielder remains under the radar due to the arrival of Siem de Jong and Remy Cabella but, with three goals and a trio of assists in 28 starts for the Black Cats last term, Colback may be a solid, if somewhat unspectacular, option amongst Alan Pardew’s first XI.

Unsurprisingly, QPR’s main options are placed in the budget bracket after the club scored just 60 times in 46 league matches in the Championship. David Hoilett was the most prolific R’s midfielder last time around with four goals and five assists over 38 appearances and, like Joey Barton (three goals, three assists) comes in at 5.0 – both offer plenty of top-flight experience which suggests they could continue in the starting XI for next term, though with Harry Redknapp expected to strengthen, none of the current crop really stand out.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino is expected to shake up the Tottenham midfield. Both Tom Carroll and Nabil Bentaleb are available for just 4.5, though it’s far from certain that either will be in the South American’s first-team plans, given the number of midfielders at his disposal. Nonetheless, Pochettino showed at Southampton last year that he’s not afraid to hand youth a chance and there remains a hope that one, or both, could potentially be on the cusp of a breakout season ahead for the north London outfit.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Sturridge will be their central striker, with sterling on one wing and markovic/coutinho/maybe lallana fighting for the opposite wing. I can't see where he would fit in the starting 11

Think you should save some money from your back 7 and improve a midfielder/striker (or both). Swansea had a pretty terrible defensive record under Monk so seems a bit much to double up on them.

I just don't know. Was burned by RVP last season and his price tag still leads to imbalance in the team. Rooney is in my team at the mo but I'm genuinely unconvinced. I think he's only in my team as I feel I should have 1 of the 2 and he's cheaper.

      Rvp fitness concerns me.

Most of the RMTs I have seen here do no include any City players. Some do, but they only have Nasri, which is a huge compromise and a poor selection while others have Kolarov, which is an unreliable selection at best.

Have we all forgotten how great City's attacking potential is? Im sure we are all going to regret not picking Silva/YYT over Mata/Sanchez.

I have moved around the money and have accommodated Silva in for the time being.

all accounts according to who? it's just herd mentality based on the season ticker.

Their opening three are indisputably better than Arsenal's and by that point all this planning will be forgotten 😀

Based on the season ticker. It's not based on nothing. LIV ars CHE in first 6, no thanks. If there were poor options elsewhere then maybe, but there are lots of more attractive options to most people

Personally, have United, Chelsea and Eriksen taking up by premium slots. I don't like the look of Liverpool or Arsenal early doors either. One or all will probably do better than I think, but I'm confident mine will do well

it's bizarre people are saying they have poor fixtures when the only tough away game is arsenal.

With that said, Nasri is a better pick than Silva IMO, based on the end of last season. I will have Dzeko and either Nasri or Yaya.

Not really. I always owned silva and aguero at the wrong times, when they're injured. On average Mata has had better seasons in terms of points than Silva. Yaya is too expensive. Nasri is just not pivotal for them, he gets the odd goal and assist. Mata will i think be behind rvp, he'll be on set pieces, his delivery is fantastic, he will be crucial. In some games he can rack up the points because he has the instinct to be more attacking in a goal scoring sense than silva who is always pulling the strings.

Basically i have no city because only yaya for cheap delivered. Now he's expensive.

So Graham Hunter claims one of Sanchez's poor attributes is finishing.

We'll take a look shall we? All stats from ESPN FC and based on League goals.

Alexis Sanchez = 27 goals from 66 shots or 40.9% conversion rate
Luis Suarez = 33 goals from 181 shots or 18.23% conversion rate
Daniel Sturridge = 26 from 99 shots or 26.26% conversion rate
Sergio Aguero = 23 from 86 shots or 23.25% conversion rate

Just to put that in perspective. Unless I'm missing something, Sanchez's finishing is pretty damn good.

Be unfair to expect the same percentage really in a different team/league but he is by no means a poor finisher so I've no clue what that turnip was saying.

A lot of tap ins and 1-on-1s contribute to a higher conversion rate percentage whereas Suarez, in particular, shoots from all over the place as long as he's 30 yards or closer to the goal and there is an opportunity to do so. His finishing is not bad, probably comparable to Walcott's, but he's still more of a winger, just like Walcott but with a stronger physical presence, and I wouldn't be convinced to play him as the 1 in 4-2-3-1 if I were Wenger.

I agree about tap ins and I'm not saying anything about what the other player's do, my point is just that he's not a bad finisher at all.

          More likely to get baps

And contrary to what is said on this site, debuchy isn't completely nailed on, especially with UCL qualifiers also in the way (and jenkisnon not being in the WC)

Hi all. Hope everyone's having as much fun as I am!
Have tweaked and tweaked and this is what I like best. Please tear to shreds.

Mannone/Krul (Or ANY other Keeper rotation/DDG+£4m)

    Mertesacker/Vlaar/Davies/Vermaelen/Wisdom

    Ramsey/DeJong/Siggurdson/Tadic/Erikson

    Dzeko/RVP/Carroll

    +£1m

Big assumptions on Davies arriving at WHL or Anfield (good option at either)
and Verm arriving at OT (Long shot). If Verm stays he would have to become another £5m
Vlaar should move and if not, £4.5m is cheap and cheerful for a team that MUST improve defensively.
Sigggy will move and always gets points when he plays.
MF consist of 4 players in the whole and a punty Tadic who has pretty decent stats and should hog Saints play.

What are your thoughts? Have a cocked up already?

    Cheers.

I think if Carroll is fit he will score off his arse, shin or face - he's that sort fo striker. Rumours are West Ham are under pressure to play more attacking, Zarate should create more space up top. If he does go to Newcastle that's just a bonus, they'd be desperate for a striker like him and play everything through him if he goes.

Mids - Ramsey and Erikson must be proven now? If Siggy plays he picks up points. DeJong is a goalscoring mid and Tadic has to take up Lallana's mantle.

I think I have a strong rotating pair in goal.

I have a Spurs, United and Arsenal player in defence, although bench is not great. [assuming Vermaelen goes to United]

My midfield is strong as I think Januzaj, Fabregas and Ramsey will score big this season and Henderson is good value at 6M and had a decent points haul last season.

I would probably keep Mata (nice fixtures) and downgrade Sanchez as their fixtures not as good and we don't know how he will settle. You will still be able to get a premium mid and upgrade both defenders. Ward or Vermaelen are good contenders at 5M and there are a few 5.5M options in the top teams who should be guaranteed starts.
