The Community Round Up

Election fever gripped the community this week in its search for a Scout Picks champion in what proved to be the closest contest yet. We look back on that campaign, whilst also checking in on the activity surrounding the frantic deadline day dash Ultimate Fantasy Premier League managers faced. Elsewhere, we revisit a love letter for Leighton Baines and consider the balance of perception versus reality. As ever, we throw in all the latest members tables, hottest topics and hear news of a new team-based quiz taking place soon.

The Community Articles

Gameweek 4 proved was pivotal for those playing the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game as the transfer window closed and managers made their final squad changes before January. Loans are still available up to then, but may not be needed if managers can get their selection right. Luckily QPR Expects Glory was on hand with this excellent guide to picking the right UFPL players for the next few months.

This weekend’s matches were also important for those looking for key differentials. The Puntmaster is proving quite the soothsayer with his regular trio of gambles and this week Southampton’s Graziano Pelle was among those coming into sharp focus in his crystal ball for Gameweek 4. Arvin-ation is another regular “punter” and offered up a trio of midfield options ahead of Gameweek 4.

With 15 % ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, Leighton Baines is hardly a differential. Christina argued, though, that his ownership ought to be higher. Here’s his passionate defence of the Everton man who repaid the faith with a strong haul in Gameweek 4.

Meanwhile, AZ took a look at the promoted teams’ defences to see if any budget friendly differential defenders had emerged as enticing prospects.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

As British Prime Minister David Cameron and Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond took part in some frantic last-minute campaigning in the Scottish independence referendum, we had our very own dramatic battle on the hustings. In our tightest contest yet to find a community champion for our Gameweek Scout Picks, Arvin-ation prevailed over rival Doosra by a nail-biting 105-104 votes. This was our biggest poll yet, with the community offering up 20 candidates to choose from. Watch out on Monday when the morning’s daily hot topic will launch the search for a Gameweek 5 community champion.

There was more campaigning against homophobia in football this week by the charity Stonewall. It has been urging footballers to show their support for their campaign by wearing rainbow laces. Thanks to the efforts of Tinkerman, our community also showed their support for the campaign by adopting a range of brightly coloured Gravatar images.

Facer chipped in with another of the week’s popular posts – our resident injury expert correctly assessed that Aaron Ramsey would shake off his injury and start.

Diego Costa was, of course, another player to recover from an injury doubt for Gameweek 4 – with devastating effect Pepin pointed out that, with such a high ownership, his hat-trick this weekend presents the season with its first game-changing moment, particularly for those that captained the Chelsea striker. Why is Pardew for Kinnear took this issue further, showcasing how a raft of highly owned, high scoring players, also including Cesc Fabregas, have the potential to ruin the season.

Impressed by QPR Expects Glory’s guide to the UFPL transfer day, 7 Shades of Smoke consulted his abacus to come up with this detailed look at where the smart money should be invested in the game. This will be worth looking back on in January when the transfer window reopens.

Finally, we asked to what extent perception clouds our sense of reality over a player’s potential. Inspired by a raft of posts critical of Danny Welbeck’s goal-scoring ability, despite statistics showing he is one of the Premier League’s most accurate strikers, we asked which other players cause a blind spot. For Goonerbyron, Yaya Toure remains a no-go zone, while for Athletico Timbo, Mario Balotelli is a player he remains reluctant to recruit; the showing against Villa certainly backed his stance.

The Members Tables

My goals imminent table, which seeks to predict potential goal-scorers based on goal attempts so far, claimed a couple of notable victories this weekend after correctly anticipating strikes from Kevin Mirallas and Pelle. Members are urged to keep a close eye on this table during the week to gain an insight into Gameweek 5’s under-the-radar potential high scorers.

Elsewhere in the members area Saintkeratinsins constructed this interesting look at the most attacking midfielders so far this season based on attempts on goal. Goal threat was also a focus for Burdinho in his look at the key performance indicators for forwards, midfielders and defenders.

Shots in the box remains the key criteria for assessing attacking potential for Banana Shaquiri, meanwhile Sk42ers looked at more negative attributes of strikers by delving into indicators such as bad touches and big chances missed.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

    A) Krul

rose i believe is under constant threat 1-2 bad games and davies is lurking - ideally you do not want to waste transfers on defenders.
Bardsley is a super buy now IMO - very attacking, completely nailed till cameron is back (many weeks) and good fixtures.

Well, we are kind of used to teams that pass better than Tottenham, so the whole thing is a bloody culture shock.

It is not that we hoof ball - it is just that we did not keep it well, so Noble was overworked, getting it back. Now we have Kouyate as well, and stuff is much better. Downing is almost back to his best, too. When we get Song in the engine room as well, some teams are going to get a shock.

Also, the sight of bloody Nolan shinning/bumming the ball into the net used to stick in the craw of some of us. We are used to Tony Cottee.

A few more, from an app I have:

The Tigers have been reduced to 10 men in three of their last four Barclays Premier League meetings with West Ham United.

The Hammers have won four of their last five league games against Hull City (L1).

Carlton Cole has scored four goals and one own goal in his last five games against Hull City.

Nikica Jelavic has scored with both of his shots on target this season.

Steve Bruce's side have also seen their woodwork hit a league-high three times.

West Ham have scored more goals from outside the box than any other Premier League team this term (3).

Was going through a few stats from the past few seasons and some conclusion I can draw from them are -

    1) Baines is a much better choice than Ivanovic or any other defender

    2) Clyne is the defender to pick from Saints backline followed by Bertrand. Avoid Alder

    3) Looking at Di Maria and Falcao's stats, I'd want to jump onto Falcao asap.

    1. DO RE MI MATA

        1) Poor value? He has been priced 7.0 every season and always turns in to a must have defender

        2) I agree with that but was just pointing out the attacking potential of those defenders and Clyne looks to be the best bet out of those 3

        3) Falcao is a goal machine and with Di Maria and Rooney supplying I expect him to do well and the stats back him as well

Mata to Fab definitely worth a hit. An assist in every game so far. Mata is not nailed on when Falcao reaches full fitness

Should have stated that I wouldn't do Azpi to X for a hit anyway, just wanted some opinions on CHE defenders since they appear leaky - haven't seen them really so not sure if coincidence or more attacking.

Mata to Fab, you think Fab is gonna rise again? TotalFPL "trustworthy" again? Haven't been on here over the weekend so I maybe missed it.

Looking at doing Hazard to Fabregas this week. Nothing else pressing. I know they have City but is that actually any reason not to do the transfer this week?

I'd save it, could be a tight 0-0 game, no one will want to lose to potential rivals, in fact a City win might suit the rest if the league.

Southampton, Everton, Liverpool and Man City over the next few weeks begin very favourable fixtures. Obviously there are a couple weeks here and there which isn't tempting. City v Chelsea, Liverpool v Everton.

Then there is the fact that Liverpool look sloppy at the back. I think you're right that Southampton are the best.

My team is definitely in need of a tune up. I want to bring in Aguero either this week or next, thoughts?

      Foster (Myhill)

      Cahill, Lovren, Chester (N.Taylor, Hutton)

Ramsey, Sterling, Siggurdson, Mutch (Isgrove - was a punt gone wrong)

      Costa, Balotelli, Rooney.

      1 FT, 1.7m ITB

The only move I can make to get Aguero immediately is Rooney out. Otherwise I need to find 0.5m and do it next week.... or wildcard. Thoughts?

A very enlightening week for Rooney owners. I am delighted.

      1) He delivered his first big haul.
      2) He is fit and sharp and his passing is great.
      3) He will not play as further back in midfield as we think. They have herrera, blind and ADM for that. And even if he drops back sometimes, he will still mainly play near the box behind the 2 strikers and will be involved in most of Utd's attacking play.
      4) RVP will be the first to be sacrified for Falcao not Rooney. He is lacking fitness, sharpness and confidence. We might see many 60 min cameos from him which means Rooney will play as a striker more often that we think and can be on some spot kicks as well.
      5) Falcao is also not match fit and it will take some time to ease him in. Rooney will still be the main man for a couple of weeks at least.

Conclusion: Right now if Utd can build on this, Rooney and ADM are utd's spark. Don't be deceived by ADM's big haul though. The assist was meant as a shot and the goal was meant as a cross. He got lucky twice. Rooney will still be the main source of points imo.

I'm not judging based on QPR alone. The fitness and Falcao and RVP is not related to how easy opposition was it is just a fact. Same thing for Rooney's position. Herrera,Blind and ADM will occupy the midfield positions and with the quality they have, Rooney shouldn't have to drop back to receive the ball. I just hope LVG doesn't go back to 352.
