Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Premium Defenders

We roll out the fourth article in our analysis of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player Price List this afternoon. Having looked at what’s on offer with the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders and Mid-Price Defenders, we cast an eye over the premium defenders for the 2015/16 campaign.

Before we kick off our analysis, it’s worth bearing in mind a handful of new changes to the FPL Bonus Point System (BPS) system revealed on Thursday, which will affect defenders.

As we’ve already discussed a decrease in the BPS for pass completion will prove detrimental to defenders in teams that dominate possession. This will influence some of the contenders in this article, such as Chris Smalling, Vincent Kompany, Laurent Koscielny and John Terry – all four registered a pass completion rate of 87% or more and also produced more than 30 successful passes per appearance.

To somewhat compensate, an alteration to the Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI) should boost the bonus point prospects of dominant central defenders. Previously, a defender was required to make three clearances, blocks or interceptions to earn a point towards BPS but now needs to make just two. In addition, players are now rewarded two BPS points for every net successful tackle this time around – double last season’s one point.

With that in mind, we’ll now assess the main premium candidates…

Laurent Koscielny is the only Arsenal defender to come in at 6.0 this season, largely by virtue of his three goals in just 27 appearances in the previous campaign. The France international only registered eight goal attempts from inside the box last term, however, so he may find it difficult to maintain such an impressive strike rate, although he has netted at least twice in each of the last five campaigns. Koscielny also grabbed 15 bonus points last season, three more than Per Mertesacker, who made eight more appearances than his partner at the heart of the Gunners defence. In terms of CBI, Koscielny’s average of one every 8.73 minutes was far quicker than Mertesacker’s 11.37 and suggests he’s the likeliest of the pair to benefit from this tweak.

The success of the Chelsea backline last season, where they racked up 17 clean sheets, has seen all their starters priced at 6.0 and above. Cesar Azpilicueta is the cheapest at 6.0, with the Spaniard perhaps the most likely of the back four to be rotated, with Filipe Luis offering solid cover. The latter only started nine matches last season, though, with two of those coming after the title had been wrapped up, so the threat to Azpilicueta looks minimal, particularly in light of speculation linking the Brazil international with a move back to Atletico Madrid. The former Marseille defender also led all Chelsea defenders for bonus points last season, despite only bagging three assists in terms of attacking returns.

Gary Cahill is available at 6.5, but is unlikely to attract many suitors given he lost his place to Kurt Zouma for part of last season and only managed to notch a single goal and assist. Compared to other Chelsea defenders, Cahill led the way for total CBI (289) and average CBI (one every 10.93 minutes) in 2014/15, though his security of starts looks weaker than the rest of the Blues’ backline.

That brings us to Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry, who both carry a 7.0 FPL price tag after starting all 38 league matches last term. Ivanovic was ranked fourth for successful tackles last time out, with a tally of 75 superior to any other Chelsea backline option, though Azpilicueta made just five fewer in almost 1000 minutes less. In terms of attacking threat, Terry scored five times last season to Ivanovic’s four, but the latter’s underlying stats are clearly superior. Ivanovic led all defenders in 2014/15 for goal attempts from inside the box with 30, compared to Terry’s 19, and was also third among all defenders for chances created (36). Terry netted 25% of his chances last time out and will be hard pushed to replicate that conversion rate.

With Romelu Lukaku seemingly Everton’s first-choice penalty taker, Leighton Baines has seen his stock plummet. The England left-back has a starting price of 6.5 this season, which unless the Toffees can improve on last term’s ten shut-outs, may deter many Fantasy managers. Baines also lost some of his direct free-kick duties to Kevin Mirallas, and should the Belgian stay at Goodison Park, this further dents the former Wigan man’s appeal. He did still chalk up two goals and nine assists in 2014/15, so when Everton’s schedule improves from Gameweek 11, Baines could move back onto our radars.

Seamus Coleman has also seen his price fall, with the Republic of Ireland international now setting us back 6.0 in FPL. The right-back scored three goals and grabbed four assists last season – a reasonable return – although with so many strong options available in the mid-price bracket, he will need to keep producing those attacking returns to justify that extra investment. Given that Phil Jagielka is cheaper at 5.5, Coleman may struggle to win over Fantasy suitors.

Chris Smalling’s attacking threat means he’s the priciest backline option at United. Setting you back 6.0, the centre-half produced four goals and 17 goal attempts from inside the box in just 24 appearances. Given his chequered injury history and the fact there will be Man United starters available for 5.5, though, it remains to be seen whether he’ll provide decent value. Smalling’s average CBI (8.37 minutes) was quicker than Arsenal’s Koscielny, for example, and just behind Phil Jones’ 7.86 for frequency amongst United backline options.

Over at the Etihad, disappointing campaigns for both Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta sees the pair both available at 6.0. In a season blighted by injury, Kompany failed to register any attacking returns in his 25 appearances last season, after scoring four times in the title-winning 2013/14 campaign. It’s worth noting that Kompany averaged one CBI every 12.98 minutes last time out – some way behind Martin Demichelis’ 10.46 for the Citizens.

Zabaleta registered a reasonable return of one goal and four assists last term, but like his skipper, struggled to hit the heights of previous years. He only created 26 chances in 29 appearances, which is a poor return given the attacking talent on show at City. Bacary Sagna didn’t steal too much playing time, making only eight starts, so if Manuel Pellegrini can get his side firing more consistently this season, it would only boost the Argentine’s chances of bagging attacking points. City did manage to keep 13 clean sheets last term, despite generally failing to impress as a backline, so an improvement on that number would certainly provide a boost to their regulars as Pellegrini attempts to wrestle the title back from Chelsea. Looking at the stats from last term, Zabaleta was second amongst defenders for successful tackles (78) and should be one of the main beneficiaries of this new rule change.

Not true. Pelle and Tadic were high on the RMT at the start of last season.

So the game is several days old now and I still can't even decide on the best route for keepers

The West Brom pair was my go too option and with their defensive options coming in at the same price or more it still seems a viable route. Not feeling any of the 9mil combo's unless I go 5mil plus a 4mil dud...

What's everyone else decided? Anyone going with a 'big name' instead of the cheap options?

What are the new chips worth? I think these numbers would be about right:

    Attack: 2-4 points
Captain: 8-12 points, probably 12-15 in a DGW
Bench: 8-12 points, possibly 15-18 in a DGW

The last 2 are best left till late season as far as I can see. The first one is a pain. It seems sensible to either use it early or save it for a defensive injury crisis and possibly never play it.

I have just been constructing a team designed to suit an early Attack chip and whilst it works, I'm really not sure that it's worth shifting my plans around so much for. I may just let it slide and/or keep it on the off chance that it may come in useful later on.

I am thinking attack could be better in the second half of season as well - higher TV - more money to spend on a better 5th mid

partially agree with this... either way it seems the chips are best used in the second half or on DGWs... casuals will likely use them early, though

first one has almost zero value IMO as you cannot tell outright that a 5th mid would beat your 3rd defender most weeks...

Bench boost can be massive if you play a WC the wek before DGW and accordingly have 15 DGW players

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

Silly comments really. You can't tell if your captain will score more than 2 points either.

I also doubt you could rely on more than I quoted for the Bench chip even in a DGW, For a start you'd need 5 or more teams involved, something we didn't once get last season as far as I remember.

In addition, if you wildcard 15 DGW players in (assuming they are there) what are you going to do after the DGW? Use the bonus points you made from the Bench chip in hits to get your squad in some kind of balance again is what.

They aren't worth anything much more than I wrote unless you get very, very lucky with the captain chip. But for everyone that gets it bang on there will be others who triple 4 points.

mathematically, you should play the triple captain in a DGW too... so at least 4-5 points x 3

point taken on the bench boost... I guess you are right, it is very unlikely you can play 15 DGW players...

League Cup final could lead to 2 games cancelled (GW27)
FA Cup quarter finals could lead to 8 games cancelled (GW30)
FA Cup semi finals could lead to 4 games cancelled (GW35)

So potentially 14 games involved in DGWs, so a bumper DGW is very possible, and it's likely that the better teams will be playing (as they got further in the cups) so team won't necessarily be a big mess.

It's all surmise. Last season they re-scheduled games to suit TV. And TV would prefer to spread them out over a number of weeks rather than having them all in one week. 🙁

The 1/4 finals are what may cause a bigger DGW this season because last time a free weekend was kept for them.

True, but some mid-weeks are no-no's due to Europe (including the midweek immediately after the FAC QFs so games cancelled for the FAC QFs can't just be moved back a few days in the same GW) - weren't there only 3 or 4 weeks in the 30s available for midweek fixtures last season?

Not saying it is definitely going to happen, just saying it could 🙂

      Boost comparisons

Normal week = effectively 12 players (11+1 extra for captain)
Triple captain = effectively 13 players (11+2 extra for captain)
Bench Boost = effectively 16 players (15+1 extra for captain)

So a bumper DGW = Bench Boost (which would mean effectively up to 32 players!!!), but keep in mind you can't WC and BB the same week, so you would have to WC the GW before to maximise........

All out attack, I'm just keeping as a safety net in case I get a load of defence injuries, suspensions etc at once, otherwise will probably just use it GW38

          That's a good point actually.

The Bench and Attack chips ideally need setting up with a wildcard beforehand (as someone said) but there are major drawbacks to doing that because you are then stuck with a squad designed to maximise a one-off bonus.

However as we effectively have a wildcard right now I thought of setting up for an early 2-5-3 prior to wildcarding in the international break into the setup I actually want. That would have the additional advantage of only having to plan a team for 4 gameweeks.

Having spent some hours on setting up a squad that way it I can say that it works but I'm not convinced. The GW38 option if you don't get an injury crisis earlier may be the best way to go.

    Krul / Butland
    Mert, Apzi, Lescott, Morgan, Coates
    Haz, Ramsey, Mane, Ritchie, Wanyama

0.5 ITB for first transfer. Feedback greatly appreciated. Thanks

I was going to do a double up on leicster then decided wait for the new manager.
Also was tempted on a double rotation with villa/west brom defenders/keepers but is is villa after all!

    Schmeichel - Hamer

    Azpillicueta - Koscielny - Rose - O'Shea - 4.0

    Walcott - Mata - Chadli - Ritchie - Wanyama

    Aguero - Costa - Sakho

I think the cheap keepers this year will shine with the new saves bonus system, hence my selection of the Leicester duo. Azpi and Kos are great value picks and may turn out to be season keepers - it makes sense to start with these two. Rose is my differential, i think he is worth the .5 more over toby, and offers supreme attacking threat - though i am thinking about downgrading to a 5.0 and upgrading the last defender slot to a starting player. Costa and Aguero offer excellent captain choices and i think i can afford to avoid hazard, at least for the start when costa is fresh.

    What do you think?

    1. Respect My Authoritah

I'd rather have Rooney than Costa (and Cesc over Mata if you must have Chelsea cover - I don't think we need it from the off). Not sure Kosc is great value, but a solid pick nonetheless. Like the rest, on;y thing missing is a Saints player with those fixtures

Hi guys - A massive lurker on FFS, was wondering if i could get some help on my team.

Bit of a casual last year, hitting 10k in the first half of the season and then rapidly declining.

    Team as it stands:

    Courtois, Hamer
    Azpi, Mert, Cedric, Shaw, Targett
Mata/Depay, Silva (/sterling), Fab, Caz, Cattermole
    Wilson, Lukaku, Rooney

Aiming to start season without Aguero and Haz, with the ability to transfer them in later if needed

Any help would be really appreciated, cheers

If you see fit to include Silva or Sterling, you should be aiming for Kun instead, unless you really think he'll miss gw1, which I doubt.

Defence is too expensive unless you plan on playing a back 4

You're starting with both because you don't have the money to get better players everything else is just trying to justify poor decisions.

Cheap doesn't mean crap. Kane, Berahino, Austin...

Nope , but none were obvious at the outset , go with one at most to avoid risk of a double failure ?

      Neither.

Wait and see before taking punts on teams that may be whipping boys.

I see your point but surely that's part of the game... taking the odd punt?

Its not all about jumping on bandwagons

Currently I think either or. Both great prospects on paper and obviously both benefit from a great early run. But currently I favour Wilson as he is cheaper plus I'm hoping he'll be another Holt/Ings/Austin.

The price difference is small but in Gameweek 1 it is everything.

I've gone for Ritchie, purely as I really want Sakho

Ha, I've actually just tinkered Ritchie and Sakho in. It'll probably change back in a few days.

That's where I am sitting at the moment but seeing Ritchie in a lot of teams and wondered why... plus those 3 spots are precious, ha
