Scout Scribbles – Martial Strikes Again

Anthony Martial emerges from the bench to grab another goal for United. Sadio Mane and Jay Rodriguez bag braces for Southampton, Dwight Gayle nets a hat-trick for Palace, whilst Mathieu Flamini proves the unlikely hero for Arsenal by scoring twice in the north London derby.

Martial in the Goals Again

Manchester United gained entry into the fourth round of the League Cup by way of a comfortable 3-0 victory over a second-string Ipswich Town outfit. Wayne Rooney broke his domestic duck to open the scoring, before Andreas Pereira doubled the hosts’ lead with a spectacular free-kick. Anthony Martial came off the bench in the second period to net his fourth goal in three domestic appearances, with Memphis Depay supplying the assist. Phil Jones returned to the bench after recovering from a blood clot in his calf, whilst elsewhere at the back, Louis van Gaal fielded Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young in the full-back berths.

After the match, Louis van Gaal once again praised Martial’s stunning start to life at Old Trafford and insisted it’s easy to keep the youngster grounded:

“It is not so difficult because he is a player who is very modest. He knows that he can score and he can score because of his fellow players. We made it for him two times very easy because we won the game and the gaps are existing. With his speed and composure, he can score. He did it against Liverpool and now again. We are happy but still we have to keep our feet on the ground.”

The Scout Says: Over 450,000 Fantasy managers have drafted Martial in this week off the back of his breathless start to life in England’s top tier. Beyond an enticing home clash against Sunderland next Gameweek, a challenging trio of match-ups for the Red Devils (ars, eve, MCI) will afford us with a clearer picture of the 19-year-old’s pedigree. Rooney’s first domestic goal this campaign could prove to be the catalyst for further attacking returns in the league, yet the emergence of Martial in a more advanced role somewhat diminishes his allure. At the back, Valencia’s start suggests he could be set to vie with Matteo Darmian for the right-back berth after replacing the Italian at half-time against Southampton. Given that Valencia, Young and Daley Blind are all classified as midfielders in FPL, Chris Smalling was the only viable defender in Van Gaal’s back-four last night.

Blues Maintain Momentum

Ramires, Loic Remy, Kenedy and Pedro all found the target as Chelsea recorded a 4-1 win over League One outfit Walsall. In the absence of the suspended Diego Costa, Jose Mourinho fielded Radamel Falcao at the lone-striker berth in a 4-3-3 set-up, with Kenedy and Remy providing the width. Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas, Kurt Zouma and Cesar Azpilicueta were rested, but Pedro and Matic came on late in the second half. John Terry returned at centre-half alongside Gary Cahill, with Branislav Ivanovic retaining the right-back berth.

Although Falcao failed to find the net, his manager was pleased to afford the Colombian minutes as he builds up his sharpness ahead of the trip to Newcastle:

‘It was a good game for Falcao, a good 90 mins – important for fitness. He worked a lot, ran a lot, moved a lot. He was in the game a lot. For the first time this season he was on the pitch for a long, long time so it was a good game for him.

The Scout Says: Mourinho has decisions to make over the lone striker role on Costa’s enforced absence, though Remy’s confident finish may well have edged him past Falcao in the race for a start at Newcastle this Saturday. Pedro’s weaving run and crisp strike serves as encouragement for his 12% ownership ahead of a favourable batch of fixtures (new, SOU, AVL, whu). The former Barcelona wide man – despite missing the opening two Gameweeks – ranks top among Chelsea midfielders for attempts (14) and shots inside the box (eight), rendering him an attractive route into the Champions’ attack. At the back, Mourinho’s decision to rest Kurt Zouma suggests the youngster will come back into contention for the St James’ Park trip.

Liverpool Scramble Through

Liverpool made hard work of their home clash against League Two side Carlisle United, eventually besting them 3-2 on penalties – in no small part due to debutant Adam Bogdan’s three penalty saves. The Anfield showdown ended 1-1 after regulation time, with Danny Ings heading in an Adam Lallana cross after 23 minutes. Philippe Coutinho started the match on the bench but was brought on after 64 minutes. Dejan Lovren and Roberto Firmino both left the pitch with injuries, with Gary McAllister rolling out a post-match update:

“[Lovren]’s landed awkwardly. It didn’t look too good as he was stretchered off but fingers crossed I don’t think it’s as bad as it looked. [Firmino], like Dejan, landed badly. It was just a ball he went up for and he’s landed on the base of his spine, just on his lower back. It’s an awkward landing but he seems fine as well.”

The Scout Says: With Christian Benteke looking unlikely to make the home clash with former club Villa, Ings – who’s notched two goals in as many outings – could be set to partner Daniel Sturridge up top. The former Burnley marksman will be relishing the opportunity to showcase his talents this weekend, given that Tim Sherwood’s troops shipped five goals in their past two road ties. That being said, the Reds wasted a surfeit of chances against Carlisle – having engineered a staggering 47 attempts at goal – which hardly inspires confidence in their attacking recruits.

Gayle Treble Sees Palace Through

Dwight Gayle bagged a hat-trick (two penalties) for the Eagles as they recorded a resounding 4-1 victory over Charlton, while Fraizer Campbell netted the first goal and claimed an assist. Lee Chung-yong and Patrick Bamford also notched assists. Damien Delaney came off at the 34-minute mark due to minor groin problem, whilst Julian Speroni returned to the bench following his injury layoff.

The Scout Says: Gayle has struggled for playing time in the league this term, earning just two cameo appearances. Considering that Alan Pardew withdrew Wilfried Zaha at half-time against Spurs and has been critical of his application, there’s a chance that Gayle may be afforded a start against Watford this Sunday. With Joel Ward sidelined and Scott Dann a doubt for the weekend, the Eagles can ill afford any further injuries at the back. The London club have tallied just one clean sheet in their previous 20 league outings, yet four goals from their defensive recruits has kept us interested from a Fantasy perspective.

Saints Rack Up the Goals

Southampton romped to a 6-0 victory over MK Dons, with Jay Rodriquez (one penalty), Sadio Mane and Shane Long each registering a brace. Juanmi, Steven Davis, Oriol Romeu and Long (two assists) turned provider at various points throughout the night. Graziano Pelle missed out with a foot injury, but Ryan Bertrand and Gaston Ramirez made welcome returns to the bench.

Koeman was clearly delighted with Bertrand’s return but admitted he’s yet to decide whether the former Chelsea man will be handed a start against Swansea this weekend:

“I think Matthew (Targett) did a great job in all the games when he played for a young player, but Ryan what he showed last year and he’s close to be back. He played last Monday 45 minutes in the under-21s and now 30-35 minutes again. Little by little he will be close to his best physical level. You have to understand that he missed the whole pre-season, it’s always difficult, and he needs game time to be back to what he was…I don’t know (whether he’ll start). We have time enough to think about it.

The Scout Says: Bertrand’s imminent return places Targett’s 10% FPL owners on alert as his run in the first-team comes to an end. The youngster rose from 4.0 to 4.1 after starting each of the first six Gameweeks, though his minutes were curtailed against United last weekend after Koeman hauled him off at the break. Up front, with Rodriquez evidently rediscovering his rhythm, James Ward-Prowse is liable to drop out for Saints’ home tie against Swansea to facilitate the winger’s deployment. Rodriquez (6.7) served as a prime pick in the mid-priced bracket during the 2013/14 campaign – notching 15 goals and three assists – and will certainly factor into our thinking if he can show signs of his former glory. Long could be tasked with leading the line against the Swans if Pelle can’t recover in time, or Mane – who’s notched two goals and a pair of assists in as many starts – might be given the nod in a central role.

Newcastle’s Woes Continue

The Magpies crashed out of the League Cup after losing 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday. Steve McClaren fielded a strong XI but was forced to play Vurnon Anita at left-back, given that Massadio Haidara is nursing a knee injury. The Tyneside team – who were also without the likes of Papiss Cisse and Jack Colback due to injury last night – were dealt a further blow after weekend scorer Daryl Janmaat was forced off at the break. Post match, McClaren admitted he’s uncertain whether the Dutchman will be fit for the weekend visit of Chelsea:

“He was feeling a little dizzy in the first half, so he said he couldn’t continue, so young Kevin (Mbabu) came on and I thought he did very well.. I think we have to take a roll call tomorrow and have a look at things.”

The Scout Says: Following their defeat to the Owls, Newcastle have now lost 14 of their last 19 match-ups in all competitions. With a home encounter against Chelsea and a trip to Manchester City next on the agenda, it’s likely to be a few weeks yet before we take a closer look at the Toon’s Fantasy prospects. Indeed, an agreeable run of fixtures from Gameweek 9 (NOR, sun, STO, bou, LEI, cry) could promote some intriguing budget pick-ups within Newcastle’s ranks if they can find some form, though with one goal in their last five, few will be willing to take a punt.

Canaries Ease Into Next Round

The Canaries cruised to a 3-0 victory at home to West Bromwich Albion courtesy of goals from Matt Jarvis, Kyle Lafferty and Sebastien Pocognoli (own goal). DR Congo frontman Dieumerci Mbokani earned an assist on his debut. Alex Neil rested a host of key players, with Nathan Redmond, Cameron Jerome, Robert Brady and Russell Martin among those that were handed the night off.

The Scout Says: Although Jarvis is ineligible to play against his parent club this weekend, the West Ham loanee has impressed since his switch, notching two goals in three outings. Priced at 4.9, Jarvis harbours potential to be a viable budget option if he can secure a sustained run of starts. Norwich’s midfield as a whole could be subject to increased investment as they embark on an excellent quartet of match-ups (wha, LEI, new, WBA).

Baggies Crash Out

Tony Pulis rung the changes as the Baggies fell to a limp defeat at Carrow Road. Anders Lindegaard donned the West Brom strip for the first time, while Craig Dawson played the full 90 minutes. Strike duo Saido Berahino and Salomon Rondon were excluded from the 18-man squad, whilst the likes of James Chester, Jonas Olsson and Sebastien Pocognoli failed to stake a claim for a spot in Pulis’ first-choice backline in light of last night’s result.

The Scout Says: In light of the heavy rotation enacted by Pulis against the Canaries, those Fantasy managers who’ve recruited the likes of Boaz Myhill and Dawson will remain confident ahead of the Baggies’ home encounter against Everton on Monday. The West Midlanders boast four clean sheets in their previous five league ties and are pitted against a Toffees attack that’s only scored in one fixture since a 3-0 win over Southampton in Gameweek 2. With Palace, Sunderland, Norwich and Leicester following on from the Toffees encounter, many are eyeing up Pulis’ backline as a steady source of defensive returns.

Flamini Double Wins Derby for Gunners

Mathieu Flamini granted Arsenal bragging rights over North London rivals Tottenham with a rare double. Arsene Wenger named a raft of changes for their trip to White Hart Lane, with Aaron Ramsey, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Per Mertesacker and Olivier Giroud the most high-profile names included in the starting XI. Alexis Sanchez entered the fray at the 67-minute mark, while Theo Walcott emerged five minutes from the final whistle.

The Scout Says: Giroud did little to augment his case for a starting berth at Leicester this Saturday, fashioning just two shots (one on target) throughout the 90 minutes. Mertesacker has missed the last four through illness, with Gabriel impressing alongside Laurent Koscielny, though it still remains to be seen if the Brazilian will face a ban – he has until 6pm today to answer an improper conduct charge following the Gunners’ defeat at Chelsea. At 4.9, Gabriel could well be on our radars if he escapes the FA’s wrath and continues ahead of Mertesacker in the first XI this weekend. Arsenal secured three successive clean sheets before ill-discipline struck at Chelsea, yet the Gunners will do well to shut out a Foxes outfit that ranks joint-top for goals scored (13) this term.

Spurs Suffer Early Exit

The Lilywhites equalised through a Callum Chambers own goal but were beaten 12 minutes from time by a sweetly struck volley from Flamini. Harry Kane threatened on occasion but ultimately drew another blank in his seventh start in all competitions. Christian Eriksen, Nacer Chadli and Danny Rose were the other notable names in the starting XI, with the latter tallying more shots (three) than Giroud.

The Scout Says: Kane is operating in the right areas at present but currently lacks the clinical touch to finish his chances. A home tie against Manchester City – who’ve shut out five of their six opponents this campaign – will hardly fill his loyal 18% FPL ownership with optimism, either, with over 70,000 parting company this week. Rose proved highly effective from both an attacking and defensive perspective and will be hoping to displace Ben Davies on the weekend. Priced at 5.3, the marauding left-back would offer an exciting route into a Spurs rearguard that’s chalked up three clean sheets in row, though given that Davies (4.5) has started five of the first six, it remains to be seen whether Rose can regain his regular role under Mauricio Pochettino.

It's a tough one. His conversion rate is incredible but people said that about Yaya and Ramsey but they kept on scoring. If most are being honest, he is a flair pick who will easily bank 0.2 on team value for those who picked him up early. I'd wait till his fixtures turn if you don't have him already.

  5. Evans v Dawson

Is Dawson worth the 0.2 extra over Evans?

If they both play every game I'd fancy Evans to outscore Dawson, but we all know he's injury prone. In saying that, the absence of European matches at WBA means more rest for Evans compared to what he got at United, which might help prevent frequent injuries (like it seems to have done with Fletcher)...

Thoughts? From what I've read so far, the community is quite split on this.

Yes McAuley has arguably the biggest goal threat but at 35 years of age and the likes of Chester waiting for a chance I'd say it's doubtful how long he remains a starter.

      Here's the BPS breakdown

      Dawson v Sou - 23, v AVL 26 (no bonus)

Evans v Sou - 27, v AVL - 28. (he earned 2 bonus pt from the Villa game)

Its actually quite tight but Evans may just have that extra edge when it comes to CBI and tackling. If Dawson gets any attacking returns (eg an assist when RB) then he would trump Evans.

Evans obviously the better option, but that old injury record is at the back of my mind.

Yep...it is much tighter than I thought and a prolific display on the wing would bump Dawson up. I guess it'll come down to the opposition. For tough sides that attack centrally Evans will do well. For sides with weak full backs Dawson could be given lots of attacking opportunity.

This is a good hot topic for me as I'm going to get one and don't know which yet.

Overall since Pulis took over, West Brom defenders have all had low baseline BPS/min scores, which is reflective of their style of play. This is what makes their GK such a good pick and why Myhill gets a lot of bonus points. The early signs are that Evans has a slight edge in the BPS but the sample size is obviously very small. I'm starting to think that despite being injury prone, the potential increased bonus point potential and cheaper price makes Evans the better pick...

Until Evans can prove to us he has no fitness issues then he's simply not worth the risk when Dawson is only 0.2 more. He's already started life at WBA injured so it's not looking great so far.

Dawson for me. The bps difference seems pretty minimal, so could go either way in future games. Looking at the member's area stats, Dawson is far and away the biggest attacking threat in the WBA backline, which would a) give him occasional attacking points, and b) swing the bonus in his favour when he does. Evans is also injury prone and the 0.2m saving just doesn't seem worth it taking it all into account.

It's almost a coin toss decision, but I just can't bare to make transfers between defenders (I still haven't changed Kompany to Kolarov) so for the sake of risk I am plumping for Dawson, just because it's less likely I'll have to worry about him until their fixtures turn poor.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Has all the Martial adoration got out of hand. He has an incredible 0.3 price rise within just a week. Is this due to ManU's global appeal, or is Martial a genuine prospect?

Are those who have drafted him in optimistic of returns during ManU's post Sunderland tough run?

Or will those that have ignored him be left for dust, as his price continues to climb and the goals keep coming.

United's global appeal is definitely a huge factor in his massively increasing ownership. As a non-owner, am I worried? This week - yes, as he will be captained by many. However, over the next month I doubt I'll be too worried about going without him.

I think part of it is the Sunderland game, part is the way in which he finished and the last part is that as United are a big team we feel they should have an asset up front. As soon as Martial started scoring I knew irrelevant of possible future points that people would get him, because there is an assumption that top teams have fantasy football options up front, and he was 8m so that's great value for a United striker.

Then he wasn't a striker though, he was a winger that occasionally played as a striker.

Is he a starter - well its looking that way. But who would have thought that two weeks ago?

Oh absolutely, not denying he played a fair amount from a wide position for Monaco, I witnessed him operate from there on a handful of occasions. He is/was still a striker though, and his best traits were always power and finishing. This is why I recalled those particular crackers from that Scoutcast, because I found it slightly odd that you were so adamant that he definitely wasn't a striker, whilst it was clear you knew next to nothing about him...

Having said that, I can definitely see why you'd assume he was a winger. Like many who'd like to believe he was completely "unheard of", would judge off nothing more than the stats. And people wouldn't be too impressed at first glance with 9 league goals, although that was decent when you take into account the % of starts, the defensive tactics of Monaco, and the low scoring league.

And it was always likely he'd become a starter imo, just not right off the bat against Liverpool, understandably.

Again, like many would like to believe, United didn't spend £36M on an unheard of nobody. It was one of the best teenagers in world football, probably the best. I'd already posted this before he kicked a ball for United, and unless I'm missing someone obvious, he is 'probably' at the top.

Maybe. Not captaining him myself, feeling Hazard (if I had him) and Pedro more.

Not sure if your mention of me in the latest Community Roundup article was a little dig, maybe? That's cool if so, but I'm not really a hardcore French football fan as the article suggests, nor did I claim to be. I'm trying to increase my poor TV before i WC in GW 13 or so.. and considering i owned Benteke, Martial was the perfect wagon. Can always shift him out on WC if needed and pocket the price rises. Also, i play with a strong 8th attacker so i dont mind if he misses a game or two or benching him for the tough ones. If he does indeed perform i'll have got Manutd's main striker for 8 million!

Martial's meteoric rise also relates to the fact we lack solid striking options this season. So more than crediting that to United's global appeal only, I'd also blame the so-called premium centre-forwards to make an impact so far.

Regarding his post-Sunderland impact, following his goal against Liverpool and his brace at Southampton, I do believe he could be fixture proof, especially because Man United are scoring goals and he, as the target man, might keep his momentum by profiting from the chances he will surely get during his next three games.

United actually have a real issue in terms of creating chances. They're really not making much for their forwards and are very reliant on Mata given Rooney's poor form and Depay's lack of impact in the PL so far. Martial will have to be *very* efficient to keep up anything like his current goalscoring rate.

Sunderland at home has a lot to do with it... and the lack of quality strikers delivering for the top teams

As a United fan the upcoming schedule doesn't worry me (for Martial) because he will get more space to work in against better teams. He's going to blank sooner or later but if its later then I want to be on the bandwagon up to that point

Martial is still an unknown but what you've got is a lad who's obviously in form, the focal point of the Utd attack and he's playing Sunderland at a time when captaincy options seem thin on the ground. It's an absoloute no brainer for me.

Can't really se how Martial will end up burning us non-owners in the long run. United's lack of creativity and poor fixtures should ensure that at least some of the other options (Pelle, Gomis, Wilson, etc.) are able to keep pace with Martial.

It's really just the Sunderland game we have to worry about as they are awful and he is the outstanding captain choice.

If they somehow manage to hold him at bay though then I'll be pretty delighted that so many people made unnecessary sacrifices to bring him in. For example, I can't see how those ditching the likes of Pelle/Gomis for a hit expect to come out ahead....

Its the United effect of that I'm sure, an FPL prospect has been a long time coming for United fans and not doubt they'd be delighted to jump on board. People who don't look closely at stats will also be all over a cheap United prospect, especially one that cost 36m and arrived with such fan fare, he must be good right?

      1. Man U have no FPL prospects but seem to be getting some momentum up. Ideal.
      2. Dearth of reliable strikers in general, especially at that mid price.
      3. Benteke injury - he's a perfect short term replacement.
      4. Sunderland. Particularly their defence.

Will it crash and burn? Quite possibly. But you'll get a good return for at least 1 week from him.

I bought him at 8.0 almost entirely as something of a safety net.

We all knew he was going to rise by 0.3 this week. That wasn't a surprise. My thoughts were that if he plays against Sunderland and maybe scores, his price will continue to rise (probably to around 8.5-8.6 by the following deadline) partly due to the mass Man united appeal.

Do I think he is a genuine FPL prospect? I have no idea. I have seen all the stats (from a minimal sample size) and the stats from Ligue 1 (slightly underwhelming) and watched the game against Southampton, and I can't tell. It is too small a sample size to be able to predict how he will perform over the entire season.

So that safety net that comes with buying him early means that if he fails to do anything whatsoever over the next few weeks, even if he is dropped and barely plays, I will simply move on and sell him at a profit. If, however, he kicks off and gets any attacking returns from the three matches following Sunderland, then the long list of fixtures following those are primed for a run of goals, and he will by then be around the 9.0 mark, annoyingly large difference had I not brought him in already.

In short (in answer to your question) nobody can tell yet. But I think it's worth jumping on this bandwagon purely just to be hauled along by the Man Utd masses

We don't know if it's out of hand because we don't have enough data to go on. What's absurd is if he scores 2 goals from 2 shots next week people will say he's not a good option. If he scores 2 goals from 6-7 shots people will say get him in.

Just on the point about United fans. If memory serves me correct, back in the day when fpl used to show the best fans league United had about 400,000 out of around 2 million players at the time. So that's roughly 20%. Factor in the glory hunting nature of the Average United fan and it's not surprising they've all jumped on board. 😀
It is a bit of a worry for me as I've brought him in too and Man United were always bottom of that league so it's not a good sign. 🙁

The quick 0.3 rise is down to several factors as far as I can see

He plays for Man U and has 4 goals in 3 games (incl League cup game)
      He's a great price
Not many good striker options about
      Benteke injury
      Costa ban
Man U play Sunderland next game so don't really care what the fix are like after that.

I think it is just possible that Martial might tonight become the first ever player to rise 0.4m in a single game-week!

The 0.3m limit for the maximum rise in a single game-week was imposed in 2013-14 (and possibly also in 2012-13), when the threshold for a second or third rise in the same game-week was the same as for the first rise.

In other seasons, the threshold for the second rise was twice that required for the first, the threshold for the third was three times, and no-one ever reached the threshold of four times that might have been required for a fourth rise.

The current threshold for a single rise is 38,168 according to fplstatistics, so the threshold for a 4th rise would be 4*38,168=152,672.

The latest figure from fplstatistics is that Martial currently needs another 50,918 net transfers in today to reach that figure. It could happen!

Watched Man city and Arsenal this week to keep a firm eye on Agüero and Sánchez as they were my preferred captain choices. Agüero didn't look the Agüero of old, missed an easy chance by his standards and didn't have that usually spring in his step. I think his head is down because of the service he's getting from Navas and Sterling it's shocking. If Silva is a no show am definitely not putting the armband on him. I know KDB is there, but they have only played a couple of matches together yet .. On to Sánchez , he played 30 Mins ..and has everybody knows his stats are great, but his body language when he plays suggests different, he's just not got that drive that he had when he first signed for Arsenal ..the pressing ..the desire has all gone..

Am a non Martial owner, struggling for a captain ..Payet seems the better choice this week.

I think that's a bit harsh on Aguero his finishing is perhaps a little bit below par, but he still looks threatening and Spurs are gonna be there for the taking after yesterdays result.

I also think Navas' days as a starting player are numbered with KDB now in the team.

Payet isn't a bad choice, but I don't think he has the chance to be as explosive as Aguero.

Agüero is a phenomenal player. The best in the league by far when he is in the groove. Tuesday night he was far from in the groove playing the worst defence in the league ..Scored a penalty and to be honest did nothing much else ...Sterling and KDB were far more threatening.

Silva and penalties at this point for me are the only reasons to captain Agüero.

Any one of those 3 really, I personally prefer pelle or Ighalo both have their pros and cons but all depends on your team, plans and balance. Pelle has the stats but is wasteful and abit frustrating to own but will deliver sometimes. Ighalo also has the stats and fixtures but like u said Watford are not as attacking, he is new the league.

I am going Ighalo but really up to you.

Nice well done mate. I went with Ighalo. I would be getting Mane in a 352 formation and benching Ighalo against arsenal.

Yea the aguero captain was refreshing and reassuring although I missed out on the sanchez captain .

    What to do about Costa?

I have taken a hit the last two gameweeks and don't want to make it a hat trick.

My subs are not helping my situation:

    Richards (liv)
    Brady (wh)
    Anya (CRY)

I am thinking hold onto Costa and leave subs in the order above.

Bringing Igahlo in for FPL and Martial in for UFPL.....nice....

    Off topic....

Middle son started his A levels this year. I've just paid his deposit for a two week trip to Los Angeles with the college after Christmas. Young folk are so damned lucky these days. Jealous as hell...

I'm getting Martial in UFPL too. If you were going to get him on a one week loan, I'd suggest getting him for 2 instead as he has a MD2 game next week.
