Injuries

Treatment Table – Gameweek 8

Arsene Wenger and Manuel Pellegrini confirm that Alexis Sanchez and Sergio Aguero were withdrawn for precautionary reasons ahead of the upcoming internationals. West Brom have worries in defence, whilst Liverpool’s playmaker pulls out of the Brazil squad due to injury earlier today. Here’s our round up of the weekend injury news…

Arsenal
Alexis Sanchez came off after 81 minutes against Manchester United in visible discomfort, though Arsene Wenger was quick to allay fears over any injury, confirming that the wide man is set to feature for Chile in the upcoming internationals:

“He has a little groin problem. Unfortunately he goes to Chile. You cannot stop him from going to Chile and he loves so much to play for his country and he will play against Brazil [on Friday] and Peru [next] Tuesday so the game at home against Brazil he will not want to miss. Hopefully he will come back in good shape.”

Aston Villa
Ciaran Clark sat out the Villains’ 1-0 home defeat to Stoke City after picking up a thigh strain, Tim Sherwood has confirmed.

Chelsea
Goalscorer Willian was replaced by Loic Remy at the 64-minute mark of Chelsea’s home clash against Southampton, with Jose Mourinho later explaining that he took counsel with the club doctor after the Brazilian became ill during the break:

“When the fans boo the Willian decision, I would do that too if I didn’t know he was vomiting at half-time and the doctor said it would be hard for him to carry on.”

Leicester City
Jamie Vardy received a heavy blow to the knee in the first half of Leicester’s trip to Norwich City but was able to carry on and complete the match. Claudio Ranieri sought to allay fears over the form striker’s fitness, insisting that Vardy sustained no serious damage from the collision:

“No, nothing serious. When I saw Vardy on the ground I thought it was a bad injury because Jamie never stays down. When he came close to our bench, the physio said it was his knee, but he was stable and he continued to play.”

Liverpool
Philippe Coutinho has withdrawn from Brazil’s squad ahead of their World Cup qualifiers, with Liverpool’s official site offering no details on the nature of his injury.

Danny Ings confirmed he sustained a minor injury during the Merseyside derby but expects to be fit for upcoming England duties:

”I struggled through the game – I just got my ankle caught in Phil Jagielka’s legs. As the game went on I felt that I couldn’t move as much. It will be assessed but should be fine.”

Manchester City
Following his five-goal frenzy, Sergio Aguero was substituted after 66 minutes at the Etihad. Manuel Pellegrini said that the Argentine marksman received treatment at half time after taking kicks to his back and hamstring in the first period, so the Sky Blues boss elected to exercise caution and manage Aguero’s minutes:

“He had treatment at half time, and to give him more minutes he could have scored but we must be cautious about his fitness, because he could be injured. Last season Kun finished the season without any problem. He is doing a different preparation, so I’m not worried about injuries, you can be injured by kicks of course but muscle injuries he should not have any more.”

Newcastle United
Newcastle United defender Kevin Mbabu picked up a hamstring complaint in the process of trying to prevent Aguero scoring his third goal of an eventual 6-1 thrashing. The Switzerland U19 international is now set to undergo a scan to ascertain the extent of his injury.

Norwich City
Lewis Grabban rolled his ankle during training last week so was ruled out of the Foxes clash, but Alex Neil expects him to be sidelined for longer than a week.

Stoke City
Marko Arnautovic was subbed off 21 minutes from time after scoring the only goal during the Potters’ visit to Villa Park. Mark Hughes played down the reason for the winger’s withdrawal:

“He just cramped up in his back which needed unlocking.”

Meanwhile, Mame Biram Diouf was stretchered off in the second half after damaging his hip. Hughes admitted that the striker is unlikely to team up with Senegal during the international break.

“He’s been in a bit of pain. He’s got an issue with his hip and hopefully hasn’t done anything to the capsule in the joint. But he’s struggling to walk and I’d be surprised if he meets up with his international team because he’s in a lot of pain and can’t weight bear.”

Swansea
Kyle Naughton missed yesterday’s home draw with Spurs due to personal reasons, reports in the local press have confirmed.

Watford
Jose Manuel Jurado missed Watford’s trip to Bournemouth with a hamstring injury, while Ikechi Anya has been given the go ahead to travel with Scotland despite being subbed off with a leg injury.

West Bromwich Albion
Jonny Evans lasted just 24 minutes at Crystal Palace after picking up a hamstring strain, while James Morrison took a blow to his ankle in the second half. Both players underwent scans to determine the extent of their injuries:

“We’ve got a problem with (James) Morrison – he’s felt his ankle. The home nations, we want to help them as much as we can. Me in particular, if I can. Fingers crossed they’ll be okay. If they’re anywhere near it, we’ll give them a chance to play. It will be all down to the doctor. He’ll scan them tomorrow. The scans now are fantastic so he’ll know whether they’re serious injuries or not.”

Elsewhere in the Baggies camp, Gareth McAuley suffered a recurrence of the calf injury that saw him miss the home clash with Everton last Monday. The defender is expected to recover in time to start for Northern Ireland during their World Cup qualifiers.

Darren Fletcher has trained for Scotland earlier today despite picking up a knock during West Brom’s loss at Palace.

West Ham United
Winston Reid was subbed off after 66 minutes at the Stadium of Light, whilst Victor Moses has withdrawn from international duties with Nigeria, claiming a lack of fitness.

I'm not looking at any other criteria other than how much he has won. And I wouldn't class his medal haul as having won much.

Whether he's a good manager or not is a different story.

Klopp is clearly overrated. What he has won? German league, maybe twice, who knows. Pearson has won Championship AND League One, and is proven in PL. You never know about players/managers who come from those inferior foreign leagues, they may fail miserably.

I think you are devaluing the importance of charisma and stature needed to manage in the premier league. Tactics here are less important. If you think about the average mental nous of a premier league footballer it's more important to man manage and get the best possible performance out of each player. Look at what effect someone who dresses sharp and talks charmingly has from mou. Anyone with an ounce of intelligence or substance can see right through him - it seems it takes the average football player three seasons though. In this sense Pearson has as much drive as a damp flannel - did you see those cringeworthy pressers last season , ewww

“Ever watched a porn movie?” the interviewer asked.

    “Yes,” Jürgen Klopp replied immediately.

The name of the porn movie Klopp watched, when he was about 15 or 16, was Josefine Mutzenbacher: wie sie wirklich war (Josefine Mutzenbacher: how she really was). The film traces the sexual awakening of a young Austrian girl in the 19th century, from an innocent child to a high‑class Viennese prostitute.

“I don’t remember the plot,” Klopp admitted, “but it got right down to business.”

They still played 2nd or 3rd best overall. Just massively bad luck and bad goalkeeping. It was the most important improvement that they bought a new GK, although they did that at least 6 months too late.

The GK was vital. Other issues such as a bit of defensive floundering got my goat, and certain players who should have upped it somewhat. Then they got their stride back and things picked up nicely.

Immobile, one that Zorc and co. got wrong.

And that was so obvious! I don't understand why they bought him. And not only did he fail, but he kept Aubameyang on bench and on wing for quite a while, when it was clear that he would fit the team perfectly, and excel as a striker.

Yes, but a number of those defenders can play better than they did. Similar in attack. Compare even Aubameyang's goals last season to this season so far and look at the progression. Other players injured, others very disappointing. As I say, a general crap fest the whole way around for the first half of the season.

Or are you asking did you make money on that? Imagine you had not had Mané in the start at all, but would then have bought him after he dropped to 7.9. Would you consider you made 0.1 with that? If so, your team value disagrees. The situation is identical to yours, in fact. From the moment you sold Mané for the same price you bought him with, it is identical, from team value perspective, to not having had him at all. When buying him back for 0.1 less, your team value, ceteris paribus, had remained identical.

        team value = 100

        Mane = 8

rest of the team = 92

        ----------------------------------------

        team value = 100

        Mane = 7.9

rest of the team = 92.1

The team value hasn't increased, his value as part of the team has decreased.

It's funny. I have watched and listened to Liverpool and Sunderland fans harp on about Klopp and Allardyce not being good enough, haven't won enough or could do better than them.

Well it's a fact that Liverpool haven't won a leagues in 25 years and for Sunderland just staying up is all they can ever hope for, maybe mid table. Klopp will give pool and chance of relative success (champions league qualification and maybe a cup). Allardyce will do thing he is absolutely solid at. Keep a team of championship standard in the top league. It won't be pretty but effective.

Let them overreach and see what it's like in the real world.
We did, and are rebuilding under Russell Slade (whose appt I was heavily against) yet the club is happier than its been in a long time and games are actually fun to be at

Just some more thoughts on Wally...and it's the same as last week

Giroud isn't coming back as no1 striker any time soon...he just isn't...Arsenal are too good without him...
Once again the RW for Arsenal was the only difficult position for Arsenal at the weekend so even when Giroud does get the odd start it will surely be Wally on the wing.
And....just to add to the nailedoniness....Ozil was fantastic playing alongside Wally and Sanchez and all that pace....

I just can't see Wenger relegating Wally back to an also ran.

Then of you don't get him then start looking at Ozil again because all those chances are going to start going in with both of Wally and Sanchez on the pitch.

as an owner i like what you are saying, but Walcott's minutes can be reduced not because Giroud is better, it can be because wenger will need to rotate him and keep him fresh for more important games.
he is the priority for the arsenal attack for now but he can be rotated now and then.
      thats my thinking.

Would you do it if Sanchez was listed as a mid and Wally an 8.6 fwd ?....Quite a few would.

It just seems strange because they are both listed as mids...but actually they are two strikers.

Totally agree. Giroud has been poor and the red card in ucl didn't help. I thought Walcott was excellent against Man U and can't see him being dropped anytime soon.

Had Sanchez and Walcott for past two weeks and keeping it for the foreseeable future.

Not in an aguero way, but it is the steady drip drip drip of 8-11 that you get. Considering we are fifth of way through the season and he is probably around 50% down on his required returns he is going to have hit a good week or two to make that up.
Though if he drops to 11 mark he may be good option once they start to perform
