Scout Notes – Gameweek 14 – Sunday

Mesut Ozil maintains his stunning form by netting in Arsenal’s draw at Norwich. Chelsea register a third successive clean sheet to keep Tottenham at bay, James Milner fires Liverpool to victory over Swansea, whilst Mauro Zarate’s dead-ball expertise breaches West Brom’s backline at Upton Park.

Ozil Opener Not enough for Gunners

Arsenal are winless in three matches following their 1-1 draw at Carrow Road. Mesut Ozil prolonged his exceptional purple patch with the opening goal at the 30-minute mark. The German playmaker has delivered attacking returns in his previous eight starts, producing two goals and nine assists in the process. With head-to-heads against Sunderland (home) and Aston Villa (away) on the horizon, there’s a good chance that trend could continue.

The biggest talking point to surface from this encounter was the withdrawal of Alexis Sanchez on the hour mark because of a hamstring complaint. We await further news in the coming days to ascertain the extent of the injury, but Arsene Wenger is certainly not confident that it’s a mere impact knock – as the player himself insists. Ozil looks set to be the prime replacement if the Chilean is ruled out for any length of time.

The Gunners’ injury travails didn’t stop there: Laurent Koscielny came off after 10 minutes with a hip problem, while Santi Cazorla suffered a kick to the knee but had to remain on the pitch following the visitors’ third substitution. In the event that Koscielny faces a spell in the treatment room, Gabriel (4.6) shoots onto our radar as a budget source of defensive coverage.

Grabban Takes His Chance

In just his fifth appearance of the season, Lewis Grabban spoiled Arsenal’s evening with his first top-flight goal for the Carrow Road outfit. Man of the match, Robbie Brady supplied the assist for his team-mate and is now Norwich’s top-scoring player in the FPL game on 52 points. Although the Canaries have recorded just three goals in five outings, their defence was breached only four times across meetings with Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal. As such, the attacking threat of left-back Martin Olsson (4.4) could render him an intriguing pick-up later in the campaign – the Swede’s recent return to their starting XI has afforded Brady to move into midfield, with the Irishman serving up two assists in the last four.

Spurs Defence in the Points

Defences ruled supreme as Spurs’ attritional home tie against Chelsea ended in a goalless draw. Toby Alderweireld (three bonus) and Jan Vertonghen (two bonus) profited most from the stalemate, underlining the merits of investing in Tottenham’s rearguard. Considering that they boast the second-best defensive record (11 goals conceded) and a strong schedule through to the New Year (wba, NEW, sou, NOR, wat), the likes of Alderweireld and Eric Dier remain enticing picks in the mid-priced bracket. Vertonghen and Kyle Walker, though, now sit on the Suspension Tightrope on four yellow cards apiece.

Harry Kane’s blank arrested a four-match scoring streak, but he still managed to fire off four attempts in an uneventful encounter. Next on the agenda for Spurs is a trip to West Bromwich Albion, who rank top for goals conceded in home matches (13). Moreover, Newcastle United place joint-top for road goals conceded ahead of their visit to White Hart Lane in Gameweek 16, which bodes well for Kane’s Fantasy potential in the next fortnight.

Costa Dropped in Goalless Stalemate

Chelsea carded their third consecutive clean sheet in all competitions as they turned out a disciplined performance in north London. A consistent starter and the cheapest route into their back line, Kurt Zouma (5.4) is courting attention in light of the Blues’ excellent quartet of upcoming fixtures (BOU, lei, SUN, WAT). Bolstering the Frenchman’s case for investment, no side conceded fewer shots inside the box (five) or big chances (zero) in the last two Gameweeks.

Chelsea’s solid foundation against Tottenham came at the expense of goal threat, given that they mustered just five attempts and one shot on target. Eden Hazard had two decent chances but still represents a huge gamble at his 10.9 price point, making it hard to pinpoint a path into Chelsea’s misfiring attack. To further compound matters, Diego Costa (two goals in five) failed to grace the pitch at all, with Jose Mourinho opting to deploy Hazard as a false nine. The Spain international was conspicuous with his dissent, implying that there’s a certain disharmony between manager and player. Loic Remy missed out as his partner gave birth but is expected to be available next weekend, suggesting that Hazard is likely to drop back into an attacking midfield role again, regardless of Costa’s pitch time.

Zarate Stakes a Claim

An own goal from Winston Reid cancelled out Mauro Zarate’s dead-eyed free-kick in the 17th minute, resulting in a 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion. The latter enjoyed just his second start in eight outings but looks set to be afforded increased pitch time in the wake Diafra Sakho’s second-half ankle injury – the Senegalese frontman hobbled off the pitch in the 73rd minute, with manager Slaven Bilic later admitting that “it doesn’t look good”. Zarate (5.3) has bagged two goals in five appearances and is clearly adept from set-piece situations, but there are stronger alternatives (Troy Deeney, Odion Ighalo and even Arouna Kone) around his valuation.

Baggies Backline Breached Again

Rickie Lambert earned the assist for Reid’s own goal when his strike cannoned off the Kiwi centre-back. Of more pertinence to Fantasy managers was the Baggies’ inability to record a clean sheet for the fourth successive outing, having tallied five in seven prior to Gameweek 11. Tony Pulis’ troops now face tough match-ups against Tottenham (home) and Liverpool (away), before the fixtures start to fall in their favour (BOU, swa, NEW, STO) from Gameweek 17 onwards again.

Milner Wins it for Reds

Courtesy of James Milner’s penalty (assisted by Jordon Ibe) in the 62nd minute, Liverpool secured their third win in four matches. Given that the 6.6-priced midfielder also converted a spot-kick in the Reds’ midweek win over Bordeaux, he now looks ahead of Christian Benteke in the spot-kick pecking order, though it remains to be seen if he has usurped Jordan Henderson. The latter signalled his comeback from injury just two minutes after Milner netted, whilst Daniel Sturridge also made his return from injury with a 25-minute cameo at Anfield, setting him up for a potential start at Newcastle next Gameweek.

Alberto Moreno’s 15,000 new owners were rewarded with the Spaniard’s nine-point haul and Liverpool’s first clean sheet in five matches. Pitched at 4.9, the former Sevilla full-back serves as a cut-price route into a rearguard that will fancy their chances of rebuffing the lacklustre forward lines of Newcastle and West Brom in the next two Gameweeks.

Swansea’s Toils Continue

The Swans slumped to their third defeat in four matches and now lay claim to only one victory since Gameweek 5. Once again, Eder failed to lead the line with any authority, posting a solitary shot inside the box during his 68-minute stint – enhancing Bafetimbi Gomis’ case for a starting berth next time out. The 19%-owned Andrew Ayew fared no better, failing to fashion a single attempt throughout the 90 minutes. With Leicester and Man City up next, more Swansea owners will be parting company, with Garry Monk’s men now just four points clear of the drop zone.

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 15

This season we have revamped how we involve the community in our Scout Picks. Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

The big difference this year is the launch of the Scout Pick Champion Lottery. If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 2pm tomorrow (Tuesday) and then be asked to submit their XI by Thursday 3pm by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 83m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.
In addition, from this week FantasyBet (https://www.fantasybet.com/) are offering Community Champions the chance to win free entry into their £500 Guaranteed ‘Big Weekly’ game worth £22 by taking on our Scout Picks in a specially set up game ahead of Gameweek 11. In addition the eligible Community Champion who beats the Scout Picks by the highest margin every month will win a free entry into the £600 guaranteed ‘Boss’ game worth £55.
This is an extra offer that is available to any community champion who is 18 or over and not based in the US.
Champions will not be able to be selected as a champion for a second time. The champion will be revealed in a new midweek Scout Picks article on Tuesday, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual the day before the first match of the Gameweek.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

Worth a repost. I know the bottom team played a good side bit it's rubbish even so. Attacking teams for the GW arranged by collective ICT threat for the whole team.

Oh yes. Perfect really. He's a great fifth mid, that was probably the only week I would have started him for a while, but I feel confident that I can call on King Josh over Christmas if needed. Bournemouth are full of bargains at the moment.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Sanchez replacements

If Sanchez is out for a number of weeks as expected - who are your top choices to replace him.

Alot will do with who you already have. So for me I think Ozil is probably the best, but I already own him.

What of you? Anyone convinced by Hazard? What of Barkley and Bolasie who offer great returns for limited outlay? Or the Liverpool midfielders? Which of those appeal?

And finally what of Silva? Could he be a great pick if Aguero is out this weekend? Or does that limit his appeal?

The quick answer would be KDB, whom I swapped this week for Ozil.

Liverpool midfield for this week looks good, maybe a one week punt on Tadic. But yeah, it has to be ozil for the long run

      I've went for KDB.

Despite the griping by some, the longest he has gone without returns is 2 weeks. Strikes me as far more consistent than the likes of Sanchez or Hazard at the moment. I'm starting to think, with all the twists and turns this season is throwing up, consistent point scorers, even if not explosive, are the way to go.

I almost posted this earlier but assumed it would be todays hot topic - and badly needed 🙂

I don't own Ozil so that seems like the easiest transfer. I'd have the money to do Lanzini to Barkley too.

Otherwise I think Hazard is still too risky but can see the appeal of a punt. Already own Firmino but would prefer Coutinho.

I'm probably getting Barkley as a blocking move for my main mini league - they've all got him - incredible how I missed that memo in Gwk 12.

Key tactics of mini league victory - copy the best players of those higher up, ignore their poor ones.

That's what I did this week with Mata and Payet out for King and Ozil. Sometimes its good just to patch up and get back to basics - get in players that score consistently and well. Lanzini is a bit pricey for a fifth mid too.

Not sure they offer him any hope. Lanzini is around 20th in one of those tables and in the second, which for some reason you've filtered by passing not actual chances or goal scoring ability, Lanzini is second only to the legend that is Aston Villa's Gil.

As the owner of Ozil, KDB, Mahrez and Alli as my 5th mid, I can afford to wait. But Hazard is certainly on my radar. I'm not yet convinced by Barkley or Bolasie, but either could rotate with Alli when required. As a non-Aguero owner, Silva is a strong possibility, doubling up with KDB. But I'd like to see him play 90mins first.

Ozil/KDB the best if you don't own them.

Then, for me, it's a toss up between Barkley (obvious and cheapest pick) and Coutinho (flair pick). Eriksen also an interesting one.

Silva too much of a sicknote for Christmas, Hazard and Chelsea haven't proved anything yet.

I have ozil already or he would be straight in.

The short term chelsea fixtures and price point make hazard a tempting punt. Currently leaning this way.

Other options i'm currently looking at are barkley, coutinho, firmino, bolassie, so the obvious choices you have already flagged. Partly depends if i want to give myself an easy ighalo > aguero upgrade in 2 weeks.

Henderson is back now and (dare i say it, Sturridge), so we dont know how Klopp will incorporate them yet.

It'll be between KDB, Barkley, Coutinho, Hazard or possible Silva.

Sold KDB last week which is pretty frustrating. Barkley is the obvious choice. I'd want Coutinho for Liverpool cover rather than actually wanting him. Hazard is a punt. Silva is still a doubt.

        So, KDB or Barkley, then...

I fear I'm about to fall into the Hazard trap being laid for me by the FPL Gods. With those fixtures its just too tempting. If I come to my senses before the devil takes hold of me then Coutinho will be the nice and safe move.

I have KDB and Ozil already.

Aguero -> Kane is happening soon, and I have Lukaku and Vardy, so...Barkley or Coutinho? Do I trust Klopp's Liverpool to sort themselves out at home and actually attack when he's back in the side? Or should I just bank the cash and take the man in form with great fixtures?

I'm going with Hazard. He's started to look a bit better lately and need to take an odd risk to catch a mini league rival.

But mainly it happened because I was drink last night and hadn't a clue what I was doing, even had the armband on him.

I've been stuck around 150k OR for about 6 weeks now. 62 points was a red arrow this week :/ I've done Sanchez to Hazard and plan to captain him this weekend to try and push on to the top 100k..

This indeed is the question ruining my sleep. Straight swap to Ozil is the easy one but hardly dynamic with near 40% ownership. Barkley is a no go for me as chose Deulofeu over him a few weeks back (ouch) KDB would be a nice blocker in my mini-league. Would love Silva but not until he has played a couple of games. So this leaves me Hazard and the coming of the second burn, even though I kept him for the majority of the start of the season, I'm seriously looking at getting him back, a differential for obvious reasons, but as said things seem to be changing and fair enough he won't play so high every week but his attitude and the teams seemed different and if a failure I can always swap easily for someone. If lone behold he does score well and if no other injuries I can see it would be a few weeks for people to start getting him back in due to his price, so potentially could be a profitable time. Hmmmmmm I'm still not sure.

Injuries now play much too big a part in FF. It is way beyond the element of luck and skilful management. Rule change needed - (additional) free transfer for any player projected to be out for a month/4 gameweeks or more.

Rotation is a different matter - there is genuine judgement involved in choosing or avoiding players who are attractive but not nailed on.

        Mmm...Not sure.

Aguero, Silva, Kos, Sturridge, Ramsey and co have known injury problems. If we pick them then it our fault.
        Also
In the case of somebody like Sanchez Arsene Wenger told us he had a hamstring problem and he told us he needed resting...we chose to ignore it.

I know I've posted about this a few times, sorry.

Why is Henderson not being brought up in a lot of these Sanchez replacements?
He's still most likely on spot kicks and some free kicks
Klopps pressing style suits him perfectly
      He's a work horse
      Can score
      Can assist
      He's guaranteed a spot.

Obviously I know he doesn't have form at the minute whereas the like of Barkley and Courinho do, but for 6.5 he could be a steal

He's on my radar, but I think its silly replacing Sanchez with a player who hasn't played a full 90 yet. Plus, seeing as he's cheap, very easy to get by transferring out other mids (Ayew, Deulofeu etc.)

Morning guys, please can you cast your eyes over this, kind sirs.

Already done Sanchez ---> Ozil. Weirdly Ozil is a differential in my ML and would rather go with a guy who has shown cracking form and consistency over a punt like Hazard.

      DDG
      Sagna Cedric Bellerin
      Ozil KDB Barkley Mahrez
      Vardy Kun** lukaku

Subs- Stanislas (Che) janmaat (LIV) Simpson (swa)

      Question is mainly, if KUN is injured and not playing this GW, would you;

A.) -4 to get Kane or another striker in
B.) Bench Kun and play a sub.
      C.) -4 Janmaat to Moreno

My main worry is that if Kun is ruled out and Cedric doesn't play v Villa, I would then be down to the bare bones. Brought Kun in on a -4 so pretty sick to be considering -4 to get him out.

      Thoughts please?

I am. All his goals look sort of jammy, but in the same way Lineker's goals looked jammy - Barkley is getting in the right place at the right time so often now that it is definitely skill. Quite the poacher. Certainly looking at him with those fixtures.

Sanchez was ran into the ground by a manager whose desperation trumped his common sense

Harsh. Wenger would have rested him if others were fit. We are just unlucky with injuries.

unlucky with injuries? no warm ups for walcott and ox against shefield wednesday. its not all bad luck. He could have rejigged team against norwich and still given sanchez a rest by using campbell instead

              That's your view.

He would be criticised even if he rotated and lost.

its not rotation if a player is injured or burnt out

Sturridge I no longer care about as I'll never own him.
Aguero has really become an absolute chore this season.
Costa is rubbish this season anyway.
Sanchez isn't really an injury problem for me, it's his piss poor form.

things have got worse and worse, need some help

      Gomes (McCarthy)
Kolarov Nyom Bellerin Rojo (S. Taylor)
      Mahrez Cabaye Sanchez Ozil KDB
      Lukaku Vardy (Martial)

Martial + Sanchez -> Barkley + Kane seems obvious
is there anything else worth changing for -4?
