FA Cup Scout Notes – Fourth Round – Friday

Wayne Rooney gets back amongst the goals as United edge past Derby to book a spot in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup. Elsewhere, Diego Costa is available for Chelsea’s clash with MK Dons, Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson is set to be rested this weekend, whilst Connor Wickham is banned for three matches due to violent conduct.

Martial Shines as United Progress

Louis Van Gaal made two changes from the side that lost at home to Southampton last weekend as United made their way to Championship outfit Derby. Switching from a 3-4-1-2 back to his usual 4-2-3-1 set-up, the United boss drafted in Guillermo Varela and Juan Mata for the injured Matteo Darmian and Ander Herrera respectively. This saw Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard – who has now started each of the last four in all competitions – fielded on the left and right flanks respectively, with Wayne Rooney leading the line.

Rooney opened the scoring with his sixth strike in as many matches, courtesy of a Martial assist, before Lingard – priced at 4.2 in Fantasy Premier League – teed up Daley Blind to put United back in front after the home side had levelled the match at 1-1. Martial then capped off a Man of the Match display by earning his second assist of the evening, supplying the pass for Mata to finish matters off at 3-1.

Late Friday Press Conferences
After covering most of the team news in yesterday morning’s article, we check around the later Friday press conferences for any worthy updates.

Jurgen Klopp issued another extensive injury report on Liverpool’s walking wounded ahead of today’s encounter with West Ham. In defence, Martin Skrtel remains absent for the Reds, though Dejan Lovren – an unused sub in midweek against Stoke – is now fully fit and available for selection.

Elsewhere at the back, Nathaniel Clyne could be in contention to return, having missed out on Tuesday due to a knee injury:

“Nathaniel, possibly, but we are not sure. He is much better, it was knee against knee and that’s really painful. There’s no doubt about the [durability] of Clyney. I asked him, ‘One is no pain, ten is big, big pain – where are we?’ and he said seven! Maybe you should have a rest, then. But now it’s three, two, one, hopefully zero and we will see. He will train today and we will know more about this.”

The Reds boss conceded that Jordan Henderson will be rested against the Hammers after their Potters’ clash went to extra-time and penalties. Daniel Sturridge continues to struggle with on-going injury issues, though Philippe Coutinho could soon be back for the Merseysiders:

“[Coutinho] is close to returning to training but he’s not in the team training [yet]. He [will finish] his last two-three sessions with rehab and then he will be back on the pitch with us.”

Loic Remy is a concern for Chelsea’s trip to MK Dons due to a calf problem, Guus Hiddink has revealed. The interim Blues boss has also conceded that loan signing Alexandre Pato may well need to improve his fitness before seeing pitch time. Diego Costa, meanwhile, has been passed fit after returning to training on Thursday, having recovered from the knee knock that forced him off against Arsenal last Sunday. Eden Hazard could be in line to start tomorrow afternoon after emerging from the bench against the Gunners last time out to signal his comeback from injury.

Manuel Pellegrini confirmed that Kevin de Bruyne could be out for as much as 10 weeks with the knee problem sustained against Everton in midweek. The City boss revealed that the injury situation remains the same, though hopes to have a handful of players back in training over the next few days:

“We knew after the game it was a serious injury – not a season-ending injury as it was not a cruciate, but an important injury and will be out for 8-10 weeks. Eight to ten weeks more for Nasri and Kevin and I hope in a couple of weeks Bony will be fit again. Elsewhere, the same injuries as last week – Vincent, Mangala, Kolarov – I hope they will return next week to at least work with the squad.”

Alan Hutton is expected to miss out again with a hamstring problem as Aston Villa square up to Man City later today. Carlos Sanchez is struggling to overcome a similar complaint, though Gabby Agbonlahor has returned to training this week and will be assessed prior to the Villa Park encounter.

Jan Vertonghen, Clinton N’jie, Ryan Mason and Alex Pritchard are all ruled out of Tottenham’s trip to Colchester this lunchtime. Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that Mason has a chance of returning to full training ahead of Tuesday evening’s visit to Carrow Road.

Elsewhere, Palace’s Connor Wickham has been handed a three-match ban with immediate effect. The forward was involved in an elbowing incident with Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen last weekend and will miss today’s cup clash with Stoke, in addition to upcoming league encounters with Bournemouth and Swansea.

No, we do not know anything about DGWs for definite right now other than that ManCity Everton Liverpool and Newcastle have a blank and do not play in GW27.

Anybody wanting to know about DGWs please standby for announcements on Monday. Till then, just sit your ars£ down and strap your knees. Save any transfers that you can even if it will cost more later, yes even if MORE LATER. You may proceed with the transfers only if you cannot afford the 0.1 drop or rise.

Do not ask DGW questions before it is Monday.
Thank You and that is all. Have a nice day.

Sorry for a re-post but new article:

Right, I know we're not making transfers pre-FA Cup games, but I'm bored...

Apologies for the long post, but I'd appreciate some opinions...

    This is my front 8...

    Ozil - Payet - Firmino - Mahrez - Alli
    Aguero - Kane - Ighalo

    1) Sanchez is almost a given, and I'm likely to do that for Ozil (although may wait a week or two)
    2) Having done so, I can do the following:

    A) Silva to anyone else in my field (but keep Ighalo, or spend no more than 7.2M/8.1M upgrading)
    B) Silva to anyone bar Mahrez/Alli, and I can upgrade Ighal > Giroud

The main crux, and I seem to have gone off on a tangent, irrespective of budget, I can't bring myself to lose any two of the above for Silva & Sanchez, but I want them both!

Now, do yo ind giving your thoughts on the above?

Basically, would you bring Silva & Sanchez in for any two of...?

              Ozil - Payet - Firmino - Mahrez - Alli

My other thought was Joss Stone maybe?

TBH I am not thinking about transfers until I know who comes throught their matches unscathed.

At present though Ozil is the only one of those I might think of taking out.

I don't know. That's not a bad track by Jossy (albeit I can't understand the lyrics).

That's my thought exactly. I wouldn't want to let any of the others go. But it excites me bring those two in. Suppose I'll wait and see how Mahrez continues...

I can't see a huge haul of points coming from him, but I'm thinking about shifting Ozil out for Sanchez after the game today anyway, if he plays a good amount of minutes.

My reasoning is that it seems Ozil has gone off the boil a bit points-wise and I'll almost definitely want Sanchez when he's fully-fit, therefore I may as well do the move now.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Early transfer horror stories

Plenty of Fantasy managers have made early moves for the likes of Payet, Aguero and Firmino even though they still have an FA Cup to go through. Those early birds will have their wings crossed that all come through these matches unscathed.

With that in mind what early moves have you made in the past that have ended in disaster?

I think my worst was getting Kompany on on a Saturday night to beat a price rise before Man City played on the Sunday. Kompany then got a red card and I was left having to take a hit.

Costa(yellow flagged) > Giroud last season for a hit and I stuck the armband on him... I don't know if it was an early transfer but it ended in disaster with Giroud red card and Costa starting and scoring a brace 😆

I recall removing Drogba a few seasons back when I think he was a doubt and then he was cleared to play I brought him back same week for a hit, he did score though. More recently Baines when injured on international duty, got stuck with him for a few weeks and when he came back think he scored 0

Getting Costa for -4 to beat price rise after he scored 2 away to SWA last season in a 5-0 demolition. Chelsea played liverpool in the league cup midweek and Costa got a retrospecrive 3 game ban for his stamp on Can before CHE's next league fixture

I took a early -12 back in gameweek 9 to have a perfect Aguero team, it was the week Silva Kolarov and Aguero all got injured later in the week, ended up taken a -24, but somehow managed to get get a green arrow from it ! So almost a disaster

very rarely do them. i think you pay the money in terms of drops and rises for the most information you can get pre deadline. its like that with kbd now as its highly likely payet comes in but lets hang on for injury and dgw news. plus there is usually a plan b if cash becomes an issue.

When Costa was in doubt and we had no news about him all week. I sold him for Dzeko(c) -4
Dzeko was injured in the warm up and Costa ended up starting, and scored double digits.

Bought Lanzini earlier this season for a -4. Was annoyed because West Ham left absolutely no clue to anyone that he was already injured and only released the info after the game.

Goddamn, it's their priority to ensure that fantasy footballers are catered and pampered for as much as their own players, isn't it? Am I expecting too much? Damn you West Ham! I shake my fist at you

In a gutsy move, I got Darren Bent! a couple of seasons ago on a monday to avoid a price fall for the striker I traded him with ( I can't recall whom). Aaand Bent got injured a day before the game.

I've been a little more cautious since then, although I did a few early transfers after that, nothing bad has happened, so far. I hope I didn't jinx it 😀

Like yourself, I used to wait but this year i've changed tactics and nearly always transfer early to get the benefits from the prices rises. Got a TV of £109m now and it would have been over £110m if not for 3 recent transfers out. And this tactic now means I have over £3m TV more than my closest rival in my mini league, which is starting to pay dividends in points (thank you Aguero) and a 66k overall ranking.

So, as this topic alludes to, sometimes this tactic will come back and bite you in the arse, but I would recommend buying early.

Bale was injured in his hot spell before Madrid, so j took him out. Came back in a cup game earlier then expected so took a hit too put him back on, having lost all the value I had from him!

Aguero > Sturridge (new) this season for a hit, got 20mins out of the man before he got injured again costing me -3

I can't remember too many disasters, but I've been forced into using my bench due to an early transfer and then an injury to another player occurred later in the week

Could have been the same with De Bruyne this week as I nearly made an early defender transfer. Glad I held with all these matches to be played!

        Got Ighalo/Pelle out before GW14, for Lukaku/Kun.
Despites Iggys fixtures, I just had to have Lukaku.

*Iggy goes on to score 3x double digits, plus an other goal in the next 4 fixtures.
*Kun gets hurt after 29 mins

        Early transfer GW 14:

        Sold Mahrez and bought Coutinho.

Coutinho ended up getting injured that midweek and got me 12 points in 7 GW's until I FINALLY shipped him out in gw 21.

Mahrez on the other hand got the following scores before I got him back: 2, 21, 13, 15 - and thereafter begin his streak of 2 and 3-point rounds.

        Yay me!

          So, anyway, for those interested...
I took another hit later in the break (-8 in total) to bring in Kane right before his hot streak started.

Worst and best transfer, all in one week 🙂

2014-15 GW4: Made my transfers, Hazard (2) to Sterling (1) and Terry (-1) to Ivanovic(C) (1*2), too early in the international break in order to beat price changes.
Then I had to take an 8 point hit because of international injuries to make the additional transfers Sturridge (-) to Costa (17) and Phil Jones (-) to Moreno (1), so the two early transfers were both wasted.

I should have waited, kept Terry & Hazard, and then just replaced the injured Sturridge & Phil Jones with Costa & another defender, no hit being required.

Last GW of last season...Hazard flagged as yellow. I'm tied in first place for my H2H league. Took Hazard out...of course he played...I think scored good points...and I came third in my H2H costing me hundreds of dollars... 🙁 It still stings!

Help.....views welcome, currently in 4th place and 48 points off the lead in mini league with top 4 all having very similar mid and attack. I'm on WC at moment and looking at 2 options

Option 1 - nice to have but benching headache some weeks
Ozil, Payet, Mahzez, Silva (or Sanchez) and Alli
      Kun, Ighalo, Kane

      OR

Option 2 - not much movement but more big guns in starting 11
Ozil, Payet, Silva, Sanchez, Hoolahan (bench most likely)
      Kun, Ighalo, Vardy OR Austin

At the moment I'm on option 1 with Silva and may shift him out to Sanchez in 1/2 weeks but tempted by option 2 with debruyne out to give Silva more chances to get in amongst the goals and Sanchez can be a beast when on form

if you are seriously asking-when some teams play twice in a game week due to rescheduled matches normally because of cup success or scheduled to play against teams who have been successful in cups-
hence fevered speculation @ teams around mana citey and liverpool and teams that may yet have fa cup replays

How many players do you reckon you will have in the blankish 27?

I'm looking at it now and think that, if I do some planning, I can just about field 10 using a 5-3-1 formation! At this moment in time I wouldn't want to remove Lukaku, Silva, Aguero nor Firmino so I would have to make do with my team.

Ouchie. But not worth dismantling the team for the sake of 1 gw!

Yes that thing we cannot mention is why I still have Lukaku, though I accept that there are other options !

              I'm gonna have 15.

Probably only two of them will have a blank though 😛

Sanchez coming from the injury history:

            14/15:
not in the squad in GWs 23&24 -> blanked in GWs 25&26&27, and then scored against QPR in GW28

            13/14: (Barcelona)
not in the squad in GW3 against Valencia, then scored against Sevilla in GW4

            12/13:
ligament injury in GWs 12&13&14 -> blanked in GW15, got an assist in GW16 and blanked in GW17

            11/12:
strain injury from GW4-GW11, blanked in GWs 12&13&14 and then scored four goals in next three matches

            10/11: (Udinese)
            a) not in the squad in GW23 -> scored a goal in GW24
            b) not in the squad in GW26 -> banged four goals against Palermo in GW27, assist in GW28, goal and two assist in GW29, assist in GW30
            c) not in the squad in GW32&33 -> blank in GW34
            d) not in the squad in GW35 -> assist in GW36

In my opinion, Sanchez clearly needs some playing time until he will be firing again.

I'm on a WC & considering going with no arsenal in short term... But leaving enough ITB to do silva>sanchez if alexis hits form... Think he'll be essential at some point before end of season, its just a case of when!

good research, he can be very explosive tho & may be worth a try if you're chasing a lead

Some west hams genuinely think Sakho is better than Sturridge and Lanzini better than Coutinho.....

Sakho is better since he's at least sometimes FiT

              Coutinho is overrated

Sakho is better than Sturridge. He actually plays 🙂 Not much in it between Lanzini and Cout. I would probably say Lansing is better. Sorry.

Lanzini and coutinho both capable of good things. Need to see consistency from both.

How can you compare sturridge to anyone anymore? The guy doesn't play.

Some advice greatly appreciated. 1ft & 2.3itb. I want to bring in Payet.

              DDG (Elliott)
              Baines, Dier, Dawson (PVA, Simpson)
              Ozil, Firmino, Mirallas, Wijnaldum (Gosling)
              Aguero (c), Kane, Lukaku

              (a) Payet for Mirallas or Wijnaldum or Ozil
              (b) also would you play PVA over anyone.

              Thanks.

Mirallas for me. Didn't understand that bandwagon at all.

                Pva bench for me.

Superb from Kerber but it shows why Serena so hard to warm to. No way anyone could dominate the mens's game with so many glaring weaknesses in their game.

Very likely that will be a better final than the men's one though

The thing I dislike about Serena & most tennis players is that when they lose they always quote some bogus excuse rather than saying they lost to a better player.
