The Digest – Gameweek 26

Sunderland’s bid to beat the drop gains momentum thanks to their new playmaker. Liverpool look a different side as the treatment room starts to finally empty, whilst we ponder whether a temporary transfer out for Sergio Aguero could prove beneficial to our three-man frontlines.

The Player

If Sam Allardyce is to retain his proud record of having never tasted top-flight relegation, it’s fair to say that the performances of Sunderland new boy Wahbi Khazri are already looking crucial to his chances.

The Tunisian arrived from Bordeaux last month with five goals and seven assists in just 20 Ligue 1 appearances – only PSG’s Angel di Maria had teed up his team-mates more often in the French top division.

In his first start for the Wearsiders, Khazri earned both assists in a 2-2 comeback draw at Liverpool before maintaining momentum in Saturday lunchtime’s 2-1 home win over United. After firing a free-kick opener just two minutes into the match, Khazri’s dead-ball delivery again proved the undoing of United’s defence and led to the Black Cats’ vital second strike as they moved to just one point from safety.

Khazri tormented the Red Devils last weekend, producing five attempts on goal and creating as many chances as he wastes no time in bringing his Ligue 1 form to Wearside. At a price of 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he’s racked up 20 points in his two appearances in Allardyce’s starting XI – serving a reminder that at this time of year, there’s value to be had near the basement as the battle to beat the drop intensifies.

They may be an unlikely pairing but, as already evidenced, Big Sam’s love of set-pieces and Khazri’s dead-ball ability looks the perfect combination.

Given that they’ve just taken four points off Liverpool and United, Sunderland seem full of confidence right now. With West Ham, Palace, Everton, Newcastle and West Brom in the next six Gameweeks, Khazri has the platform to wreak further havoc as his manager looks set to plot yet another great escape.

The Team

Despite turning in some stellar showings since the appointment of Jurgen Klopp back in October, Liverpool’s on-pitch performances have failed to match their remarkable consistency for picking up injuries.

Indeed, the former Dortmund manager has had to wait until the eighteenth league match of his tenure – away to Villa on Sunday – before he could unleash Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge in the same starting XI.

The 6-0 annihilation of Remi Garde’s charges showcased the capabilities of an injury-free Klopp side. Whilst Sturridge bagged a goal and Coutinho created three assists on his way to 15 points, though, Firmino’s single assist indicates that he may suffer from the tactical reshuffle – having been fielded as a “false nine”, the weekend switch to 4-2-3-1 may not be to his liking.

Sunday’s result also points to a better balance. Although they’d registered big away wins at Chelsea, City and Norwich, Liverpool had never managed to score more than one goal in the league without conceding under Klopp. With Sturridge playing on the shoulder and the two Brazilians prompting proceedings in support roles, the Reds finally racked up the points at both ends of the pitch.

Granted, Villa are anything but a litmus test for Liverpool’s Fantasy potential but Sunday’s showing will only breed confidence ahead of a run that hands them four home matches in six (MCI, cpl, CHE, sou, TOT, STO) once their blank Gameweek 27 has passed. Given they have already put four past City and scored three times at the Bridge, Liverpool will hold little fear heading into those encounters – all the more so if they can take advantage of the former’s leaky defence in the upcoming Capital One Cup final prior to the resumption of league duties.

The Talking Point

Having notched four times at home to Spurs in the corresponding fixture last season, Sergio Aguero was the standout armband candidate for many Fantasy managers heading into the weekend deadline.

This time around, though, the Argentine failed to register a single attempt on target as City suffered a damaging 2-1 defeat that may well have killed their title ambitions. Damningly, the Etihad outfit have earned just six points in 10 matches against the top eight sides so far, scoring 11 times and conceding 20.

With City now set for a blank Gameweek 27 due to their Capital One Cup final duties, many are considering their short-term options and the idea of a temporary move out for Aguero is starting to gather pace. As discussed in Jonty’s Hot Topic yesterday, there’s method to this train of thought. City then face a trip to Liverpool in Gameweek 28 and also entertain United in Gameweek 31.

Such a scenario would leave them with just two favourable fixtures – a home clash with Villa in Gameweek 29 and trip to Norwich the following weekend – in the next five rounds of matches. Furthermore, if they defeat Chelsea in the FA Cup this weekend, that clash with the Canaries will need to be postponed, too, lessening Aguero’s appeal further.

A transfer out for Aguero would, of course, be a temporary affair and merely a means of playing the fixtures at such a tricky time of year. Aside from his blank against Spurs, the Argentine has seemed close to his best again – banging in four goals in as many matches. Looking at the form forwards in FPL, though, both Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane have bettered Aguero in the last four Gameweeks, whilst Diego Costa has equalled his output.

Vardy, along with United pair Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial (who both outscored Aguero in the last three Gameweeks), now has three home fixtures in the next four. Kane, meanwhile, has two home fixtures and a trip to whipping boys Villa over that same period.

Providing your squad is in shape to deal with the upcoming blanks, saying cheerio to Sergio for the short-term and plotting a course to draft him back in may not be as crazy as it seems.

Yeah, I really like him but 4 shots on target in his last 4 is a bit rubbish.

His boss has been saying he's tired... he wasn't really having a great deal of shots when he was scoring all his goals, he just wasn't missing many chances.

Once he's had a rest, I'm sure he'll be back to his clinical self - the best opportunity to rest him is this weekend, in which case, he'll be a bit consideration to bring in for GW27 for me.

Possibly move him on if he plays 90 minutes at the weekend and continues to be in need of a rest.

Would look at other options than Gabriel... not sure what his injury status is exactly, but whenever I read "hamstring" in the same sentence as "problem" or "strain" etc... it generally means avoid like the plague for me.

Is it worth taking out Aguero for Vardy or Ighalo for Vardy? Ighalo has poor form but is playing bournmouth.

    Butland (Henn)

Alder - Bellerin - Williams - VVD (simpson)

Ozil - Mahrez - Payet - Alli (Firminio)

    Kane - Ighalo (Aguero)

    I have 1ft and 3.1itb

If City lose to Chealse this weekend that will mean that they have a game GW30, in that case i wouldn't transfer out Kun just to get him back for GW29 and Villa at home. If they win then he have 2 blanks in 4 GW and it is easier to get rid of him

      1. djenzio
        • 9 Years

I still wouldnt get rid even with 2 blanks as that means he has 2 DGWs

Yeh good points, I'm just concerned with not having Vardy this GW and all the players behind me in my league having him. Watford don't have the best run of games after this GW so might take Ighalo out with Vardy being the better long term prospect.

        1. Salah Fingers
          • 8 Years
          8 years, 3 months ago

Alternatively I should just be patient and wait until after the cup games, I'm just a little concerned Vardy may rise by a further 0.2 by then.

        2. Rossonero
          • 9 Years

Ighalo have a great fix this week, so i think its 50-50 between keeping him or getting Vardy, if you feel like going a bit risky then you can cap Ighalo, or if you would rather play it safe get Vardy because lot of ppl will cap him (including me)

Ighalo's reportedly tired... IF he gets a rest this weekend, I'd fancy him to return to form for GW27, so I'd hold personally.

No rest at the weekend, I'd probably move him on for Vardy... although I do feel Vardy is almost borderline essential to have from this GW

          1. Salah Fingers
            • 8 Years

Yeh good point, Deeney was rested and came back firing so would be class if Ighalo had a rest for the cup game! If he does get a rest then I'll probs punt on aguero to vardy and then ighalo to Aguero the week after

              Yeah, Deeney perfect example!

IF Man City have a blank GW30 and Ighalo is rested this weekend, I'll be looking at bringing him in, as I already own Vardy.

I don't really want to have to pay the extra £0.6m to buy Aguero back though... so I may opt out of Ighalo, which will almost certainly boost Ighalo's chances of doing well!

Deeney's 13 points ruined my simple plan of swapping him for Vardy. Might do some Aguero juggling now, depending on the FA cup results

Khazri looks a very good punt, but the blank GW 30 is quite likely, Stoke has nice fixtures, but it's so unpredictable, so I suggest just wait until FA cup games, and then make 2 transfers in for players who will play in GW30

In the the current formation, yes.

If they change back to a 4-4-2 for whatever reason, be it an injury to another player, tactics, etc... then no, as Bertrand would surely play left back.

If you've got the extra funds, and given their propensity for keeping clean sheets of late, I'd rather pay the extra for VVD, Fonte or Berty if you can

    Toby Wolly Daniels
    Sanchez Ozil Mahrez Payet Alli
    Kane Vardy

    Mccarthy Bellerin Moreno Aguero

    1ft nothing in the bank

I might do Moreno to Fuchs this week and bench Daneils. That will leave 6 players for GW30.

Any idea how to plug the remaining gaps without getting rid of good players? Happy to lose Sanchez to Arnie or Willian or Aguero to Costa. Other than that I don't want to sell anyone else.

    Thoughts?

I've decided to wait until we know who has blanks GW30 before deciding on potential transfers... it just pickles my head otherwise - I'd suggest the same tactic to you, if you're able to leave it.

I have done Lukaku to Vardy with one of my FT's though, as it appears to be the glaringly obvious move that most are making - Everton 'should' beat Bournemouth at the weekend.

Once we know we has blanks, it'll be easier for you to plan transfers around getting a full team out GW30

I've gone for Higuain, Aubameyang and Martial. I did have Gameironand Hernandez in other drafts. I was tempted to do the transfer tactic your doing, but I decided I'll just keep it just incase.

I think gamiero and hernandez have easier games but higuain and aubameyang are much more clinical. By using my free transfer afterwards, i can check who starts in the 6 o'clock games to ensure I have a definite starter (like higuain who may not play)

I know there's a big gap in the quality of the leagues, but Sporting have the best defence in the Portugese league, which put me off Hernandez a bit.

But they did concede 11 goals in the group stages which, apart from the teams liverpool and united are playing, was the worst out of all the qualified teams

Neither I think, no idea whether klopp will rotate. Better options elsewhere as well imo such a reus, mkhitaryan, insigne etc

I am. Looks like there is no point having CL players for this round though as they only have 1 game compared to the EL teams having 2. Bit lost with who to pick though as not sure who is likely to rest players for this comp? Dortmund likely to put a full team out?

In the same position mate, luckily I have five teams (won £50 a few weeks a go so putting it into paying £2 a month) so I have evenly spread strikers like aubameyang, hernandez, aduriz, gamiero etc. I'd think dortmund would put a strong team out tho

I have Ronaldo, Aubameyand and Aduriz at the moment and was planning on doing the same as you with Ronaldo. Lots of the EL players not even listed though!

If anyone is interested, last week's top 10k template team was:

    Cech

    Toby Dann Bellerin

    Mahrez Ozil Barkley Alli

    Kun Kane Lukaku

    (Butland, Smalling, Sagna, Payet)

Firmino, Cresswell, Ighalo and Vardy were represented very highly as well.

Planning ahead a bit here, but Ozil>Arnie for a -4pt hit?

My logic, Stoke have 2 easy home fixtures, can't see Ozil doing that much against Man U and then obviously GW30 is here which means Ozil probably won't feature in that.

    UCL team

GK Navas, 3 mil bench fodder
DEF Otamendi, Rodriguez(wolf), Eliseu, Antunes(Kiev) 3 mil Bench fodder
MID Ozil, Willian, Gatain, Draxler, 3.5 mil bench fodder
    FWD Dzyuba, Messi, Ronaldo

Gatain or Dzyuba C first night
    Ronaldo C second night
    Messi C 3rd night
Otamendi C 4th night at a last resort

Alternatives are Modric and Douglas Costa for Will i an/Draxler, but Draxler hitting form and has favourable fixtures
Tough choices. I have no bayern so costa is appealing

    That kiev defender needs changing
