Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Mahrez edges Leicester to within touching distance of the knock-out stages while Lloris saves Spurs in Germany. Here’s the key moments from Tuesday’s Champions League matches…

Bayer Leverkusen 0 Tottenham Hotspur 0

It’s been a good few days for keepers. After Sunday’s Tom Heaton heroics and David de Gea’s Monday masterclass, it was all about Hugo Lloris (5.5) as Spurs held out for a point against Leverkusen.

Having had the better of the first-half, Tottenham hung on after the break, with Lloris making three superb saves.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino made four changes from the team who drew at West Brom.

Kieran Trippier’s (4.8) inclusion allowed Kyle Walker (6.0) to have his customary Euro break, while Heung-Min Son (7.7) and Danny Rose (5.9) returned to the starting line-up and Eric Dier (5.2) replaced the injured Toby Alderweireld (6.5).

This would appear to indicate starts for Walker and perhaps Ben Davies (4.9) in Gameweek 9.

Son didn’t come in for Vincent Janssen (7.8) up front, however, but in a midfield swap with Moussa Sissoko (6.8).

Should Pochettino continue with that tactic in the Premier League, the 13.3% of Fantasy Premier League managers with Son in their squads will be concerned about their man’s potentially reduced goal threat, particularly with Harry Kane (10.7) thought to be lining up a Gameweek 11 return.

Janssen again failed to score, although he did hit the bar, and Dele Alli (8.2) should have done better when he headed wide from six yards out.

Pochettino praised his keeper post-match – and gave an update on the 18.1%-owned Alderweireld.

“To talk about Hugo, he’s one of the best. That’s my opinion about him. It’s great to have him in goal. His save was fantastic and very important for the team. It’s difficult for the weekend because it’s still painful for him (Alderweireld) but it’s important that the scan was all clear. We’ll now see. If he’s not involved this weekend, maybe for the next few games.”

Alderweireld’s potential absence at Bournemouth will come as a blow, not just to his own 18% ownership but also the 36.7% with Walker in their line-ups.

The Belgian is a vital component of Pochettino’s defence which will be more vulnerable at the Vitality without his influence.

Spurs have kept four clean sheets to this point – more than any other Premier League side – but will be colliding with a Bournemouth outfit with three successive home wins, having scored eight goals over those matches.

Their next Champions League encounter will see them host Bayer Leverkusen at White Hart Lane following the Gameweek 10 date with Leicester City.

Spurs XI: Lloris, Trippier, Dier, Vertonghen, Rose, Alli, Wanyama, Lamela (Sissoko 71), Eriksen, Son (Onomah 90), Janssen (Dembele 65).

Leicester City 1 FC Copenhagen 0

The returning Algerian duo of Riyad Mahrez (9.2) and Islam Slimani (8.5) kept Leicester’s 100% Champions League record intact.

Rested at the weekend, an influential Mahrez flicked home Slimani’s header for the winner to virtually assure new year European football for the Foxes.

Boss Claudio Ranieri also restored full-back Danny Simpson (5.0) to the Leicester defence, which kept a second European clean sheet to go with their three domestic shut-outs. For that they had Kasper Schmeichel (5.0) to thank, the Dane making a fine late save.

Post-match, Ranieri was keen to turn the attention back to his team’s poor domestic form.

“You spend a lot of mental energy in the Champions League. When you come back, you are a little down, but this is normal. We want to change this mood because it is important now for us the Premier League. The Premier League is our priority.”

One player struggling in both competitions is Jamie Vardy (9.7). He again failed to score and has no goals in Europe and just two in the league this season, while Slimani continues to impress.

The Englishman enjoys 12.0% ownership, Slimani just 1.7%. A trip to Spurs aside, the Foxes have a blossoming set of fixtures to come, including Crystal Palace, West Brom and Middlesbrough at home and a trip to Sunderland.

Slimani, who is 1.2 cheaper and has matched Vardy’s goal count from four fewer starts, could offer a better value investment over that kindly spell.

Meanwhile, Mahrez continues to shine in Europe without translating that to Fantasy returns – he’s fetched just a single assist since his Gameweek 1 penalty kick at Hull City but has three Champions League goals.

The Foxes face the reverse fixture in Copenhagen on November 2, four days after the Gameweek trip to Spurs.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Simpson, Morgan, Huth, Fuchs, Mahrez (Amartey 91), King, Drinkwater, Albrighton, Vardy (Okazaki 84), Slimani (Ulloa 87).

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is it time to take the armband off Aguero?

Aguero has blanked in half of his six games this season and was a substitute in Gameweek 8 due to international and Champions League commitments.

With other candidates showing better form is it time to limit Aguero’s captaincy and only consider him in the easiest of fixtures away from Champions League games?

GWK 9 doesn’t look overly promising for Aguero, with the resolute Southampton defence visiting.

Barcelona are up again a few days after GWK 10, which surely makes him a rotation risk. Meanwhile, that week Arsenal play Sunderland away and face a trip to that Bulgarian side that no one has heard of a few days later.

Gameweek 11 looks good for Aguero, when Middlesbrough visit

But then in Gameweek 12 Aguero travels to Palace, while Lukaku presents a viable alternative when Swansea visit Goodison.

Given that over the next four Aguero looks the best captain just once it also begs the question – is the Argentine ditchable and is KDB arguably a better option?

Thinking the unthinkable - getting rid altogether. Pairing Costa/ lukaku is currently getting better returns than Kun/ Defoe or Kun / Benteke for the same money.

I select the captain based mainly on fixtures. I captained Aguero in 4 of his 6 games.

I like to captain him when he's not the top pick. It seems to work every other time, and in my experience the gain in rank easily makes up for the time when it doesn't.

For me it's time to put the armband back on him I think. I gave him a miss last week because of the likelihood of a benching.

Southampton give up plenty of chances in the box, especially away from St Mary's. They just haven't conceded many so far. In addition, they play on Thursday in the San Siro while City have an extra day to prepare. I think Aguero can take advantage of that, there aren't many deadlier penalty-box finishers around.

Walcott could be his main rival as far as I am concerned but Middlesbrough are also quite solid defensively, the kind of team that Arsenal can sometimes struggle to break down.

One or other of those for me. But probably Aguero.

I think if you have Aguero, and don't captain him, then he's a waste of money. Too expensive not to captain.

Also, there are other in-form striker and mid who is scoring at will. And with good fixtures as well.

If not planning to captain him, then ditch him.

No, that's not right. A 13m player is poor value if you NEVER captain them. Doesn't mean you have to do it every week. 😕

I've had the armband off him and on Costa for the past 2 weeks and it's paid off. I feel that his is def in my squad (unditchable) but fixtures and CL commitments will determine armband choices. Holdfast but captain wisely....

We had this same debate last year gw1-7 when he had only scored 1, he ended up nearly top scorer in the league and will again this year. Keep him in your team and captain him plenty, but just doesn't need to be every week. There's no such thing as a set & forget captain, unless your a casual....

There are other options at the moment for sure. Although I seem to recall something similar last season then bang 5 goals v Newcastle. Because so many people had given up on captaining him those of us who didn't got a big jump in OR and you don't often get that from an Aguero captaincy as so many people do it usually.

Think there's a big difference between a very poor Newcastle side and quite a resolute Southampton side.

Even if Southampton were a little weaker they are nowhere near as poor as Newcastle were last season.

There is but Aguero has more capability than any otehr forward available. If you get him on the right day he can destroy any defence. How many of this Southampton defence are injured right now anyway?

Fonte and Van Djik is fully fit and running. Forster no pushover as well. Their fullbacks out injured. Matt Targett, Bertrand. Teenager Sam Mcqueen is prolly gonna deputise on the left. However, he played pretty well against Burnley. But Man City is something else.

Though I doubt Aguero will score freely like vs Newcastle. 2 at most.

My captain choices so far have been:

      Kun 18pts
      Kun 26pts
      Kun 4pts (fail)
Hazard 2pts (even bigger fail) - Kun banned
      Lukaku 24pts - Kun banned
      Kun 26pts
Ibra 2pts (another big fail) - Kun 2pts
      Sanchez 10pts - Kun -1pt

So overall I think he is still a safe choice mostly, but there are viable alternatives

No it is not time and it never will be. A missed pen which was poor but he also had a goal bound effort just turned round the post by a brilliant save. And that was in one half. Koeman said it was the best team he's ever come up against didn't he? City are capable of taking anyone apart. Saints defense struggling with injuries. I have both Sanchez and Wally so there is the difficulty of 'picking the right one'. Lastly Aguero is hands down the most talented striker in the league and can make a Hatrick out of nothing. So yes, I've convinced myself if nothing else.

Ditch the best striker in the league? Come on. Even if he costs 13m it doesn't mean you should captain him week in week out. Sometimes there are more sensible options like last GW. But ditch him? Kun scores for fun.

I gave the armband to Costa last week, and it paid off quite nicely. Arsenal look to have a better fixture than Man C, so I reckon it's Walcott for me this week. Costa is clearly in form, but Mourinho is going to park the bus and tell his players to wind Costa up until he blows!

  13. getting the most from your fifth mid
    SwissGuinness
    • 11 Years
    7 years, 7 months ago

Do you want £0.7 more to spend in your team ?

With good management of the fifth mid, you can do that. How ? Let me explain :

One condition is to have started with Capoue, which many of us did here.
I bought him at 4.5 and sold him for 4.9. That's 0.4 banked.

Then I got Allen at 4.8. He's already 4.9 and will surely rise at least to 5.0. If he does good against Hull, which I hope he will (I'm playing AOA this GW), the price rises could go crazy.

    So, 0.4 + 0.1 at least = 0.5 more for my team.

Then, I could get a mid at 4.3, if/when Allen's price and form start to fade.

So I started with a 4.5 Capoue. With his price rises (+0.4), Joe Allen's price rises (at least 0.1) + the potential swap for a 4.3 mid (+0.2), it mounts up to 0.7 to spend elsewhere, due only to a good management of the fifth mid !

This is of course if you have nothing more urgent to deal with. But people who are saying Allen is useless are wrong in my opinion. If you haven't got better things to do, it's a really smart transfer. And not only for money, he's playing HULL CITY with full confidence in his scoring ability.

I guess the issue is with "if you haven't got anything better to do"... I quite like the look of my team, but swapping out Foster or Antonio is priority for me over losing Capoue for Allen to make a few extra £'s.

That said, there are plenty of people who have Capoue as their 4th mid, so I think a swap to Allen for them is a great move.

      Nice post though 🙂

Bit of a waste of transfers imo. I don't think I'd ever play Allen. Not because hes not a good option but because my other 7 attackers are too good to bench. So I'd just be using transfers to make a bit of money. And I'd rather use them to make points.

I know a lot of people have other priorities, but that doesn't mean it's a waste of a transfer. If done in the right context, I think it's a good strategic move. If you're happy with you team, go for it !

I've got fires to put out all over the shop.

The smouldering cinders of Capoue can wait for now.

Hahaha Why would it be a rubbish transfer if you haven't got anything better to do ?! Capoue's price is falling. Allen's is on the rise. So is his form. Stoke's fixtures are great.

Happy to talk about it again in a few weeks, after he scores a brace against Hull for my AOA and when his price will be 0.5 more 😉

Just posted something very similar having not read this post yet.

Admittedly I have nothing better to do but I will play Allen 2-3 times in the next six weeks and my price rises are exactly the same as you describe (I started with Capoue in my team).

Actually, I probably won't sell Allen for a £4.3m mid as I like a playing one and have in the past had a £5.0-5.5m player in the fifth mid slot and actually play him if he has good form/fixtures. Prices are tougher this year but with planning, the fixtures are giving opportunities too, with teams having 5+ good games in a row at various points in the season. This means that I'm happy to move my players about for these periods at a time, planning for the next one (as Arsenal's, Watford's, Stoke's and Liverpool's fixtures each respectively come to an end).

I think team value will become increasing important as the season progresses and a combination of prices stabilising and fixture cancellations kick in...

Great to see some think the same way as I do about this 🙂

I don't know if I'll sell Allen for a £4.3 mid, but it's a great option if his form declines and if you need some money to spend elsewhere.

    10. Adz87
      • 7 Years
      7 years, 7 months ago

if 4.3 mid is the plan just do cap to 4.3, bank 0.6 and save 2 transfers in the process, miss out allen.

      1. SwissGuinness
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 7 months ago

True. It's an option, but :

        1) You would only save one transfer, not two. (Capoue -> 4.3 = 1 transfer /// Capoue -> Allen -> 4.3 = 2 transfers).

        2) As I said, Allen will surely rise to 5.0, but he may well rise even more, let's say 5.4, offering you 0.3 more to spend elsewhere than what you would get by doing Cap->4.3.

        3) You'd want to play your AOA before getting a 4.3 mid. I wouldn't feel comfortable with playing it with Capoue. Allen has better form and fixtures than him.

If Allen rises to 5.4 then it will be because he is continuing to score well, and in that case he should be kept, not sold.

Been making a conscious effort to simply follow form this season. Has been paying dividends thus far.

Have already brought in Holebas this week, but am sorely tempted by Benteke ---> Austin with my second FT.

This would be a form transfer in its purest form. Pretty awful fixtures for Charlie but he is bang in form and I feel he will still score goals.

Thoughts? Stick with Tekkers or continue form hunting?

Austin's fixtures aren't all that worse than Benteke's. It's a FT, you want to do it, and your tactic of following form has paid off as you stated. Sounds like a goer I think...
