Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Life without Aguero begins with a draw for City while Lucas Perez makes a strong, but possibly futile, case for himself as Arsenal romp to victory in group-winning style. Here’s what we learned from last night’s Champions League action.

Man City 1 Celtic 1

Kelechi Iheanacho (6.6) began his potentially extended turn as Sergio Aguero’s (13.0) replacement with a goal in a match otherwise lacking in definitive pointers as to how Pep Guardiola will work around the Argentinian’s four-match ban.

With the tie the deadest of rubbers, the City boss opted for a decidedly experimental line-up, starting the match with three right-backs and a number of teenagers filling various roles.

John Stones (4.9), Nicolas Otamendi (5.9), who will be suspended for Saturday’s trip to Leicester, and Aguero were all benched, while Kevin De Bruyne (10.8) and David Silva (8.7) had the night off.

The 9.4% of Fantasy Premier League managers with Ilkay Gundogan (5.4) in their sides would have wished the same fate on the German. The fact that he started suggests a reduced role for him at the weekend – Yaya Toure is, of course, available to Guardiola.

By contrast, Guardiola’s use of Pablo Zabaleta (4.7) as a holding midfielder could point to the defender being given a run as Fernadinho’s (5.4) replacement while the Brazilian serves his three-match ban.

Nolito (8.6) set up Iheanacho’s goal, which followed a Celtic opener scored by winger Patrick Roberts – on loan from City. The 19-year-old’s strike seemed appropriate on a night when Guardiola started Tosin Adarabioyo, also 19, in defence and had 16-year-old Phil Foden among his substitutes.

If they represent City’s future, Guardiola was giving nothing away about his present plans in his post-match comments on Iheanacho.

“He [Iheanacho] scored a good goal. There’s not extra pressure (with Aguero’s suspension), he has to make his job for him and for the team.”

Nolito impressed, Iheanacho scored and De Bruyne stayed at home – all three could step in to Sergio’s shoes at the King Power. Guardiola might have learned more about that topic from last night’s match, but we have given up attempting to second guess his intentions.

Having said that, Iheanacho appears to be in little doubt as to his role…

“I have a responsibility to be the striker for the team, replacing Sergio when he is not around. I have to prove myself, give my best and work hard for the team and make sure we get the wins we need.”

Man City XI: Caballero, Sagna, Maffeo (Navas 62), Adarabioyo, Clichy, Zabaleta, Fernando, Gündogan, Nolito, Iheanacho, Sané.
Subs not used: Gunn, Agüero, Stones, Otamendi, Angelino, Foden.

Basel 1 Arsenal 4

Basel had their chances, but Arsenal had better ones and took them to secure a surprise top spot in their Champions League group.

Lucas Perez (7.8) starred, scoring a hat-trick that will most likely do no more than marginally improve his position in the pecking order of an Arsenal attack enjoying an abundant early December.

The summer signing has had just 88 minutes of league action thus far, and his performance in Basel should help him see more when the Christmas schedule really bites.

But with Alexis Sanchez (11.6) starting and both Theo Walcott (8.0) and the fit-again Olivier Giroud (8.7) also featuring in Switzerland, Perez is likely to remain a bit-part player at best.

At least he now has more goals to his name, courtesy of two assists from a consistently dangerous Kieran Gibbs (4.8) and one from Sanchez. Mesut Ozil (9.6) then set up Alex Iwobi (5.8) to cap a fine display from the German.

Shkodran Mustafi (6.1) was rested, Rob Holding (4.1) deputised and Gabriel (4.8) again filled in at right back, but they could not combine to keep a clean sheet – much as Arsenal have failed to do for the past five Gameweeks in the league as well.

That was the only blight on an otherwise impressive night, although tougher tests and better goalkeepers are to come.

Having said that, aside from a Gameweek 17 trip to Man City, the Gunners have strong enough fixtures all the way to February and their offensive threat is there for all to see – they have been blanked just twice in the league all season, while scoring at least three goals on eight of the other 12 occasions.

Where Perez fits into all that remains to be seen.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Gabriel, Holding, Koscielny, Gibbs, Ramsey (Giroud 70), Xhaka, Iwobi, Özil (Walcott 74), Pérez, Sánchez (Elneny 70).
Subs not used: Cech, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Monreal, Mustafi.

I think I will have to bring Sanchez in my team! but Ozil provides more overall balance...

Overall balance is overrated. ML leader has Capoue Henderson Gundogan and he's still top.

Before this gameweek, I was set on buying Austin for Deeney but Aguero got banned and I feel like I have to take advantage and get in Iheanacho. However, he played the full 90 minutes last night and that concerns me. Do people still think he'll start this weekend? Pep is a rotating nutjob and it makes me want to stay away, but the next few weeks could be profitable.. I kind of have to make my decision by tonight too since Nacho is likely to rise.

Hmm, I hope so.. If not, he has to start the game after, surely. Pep could easily play Nolito or Sterling as false 9's. He is way too unpredictable

Looking at Nacho too but really feel the 90 mins last night was to improve his match fitness. Rested the weekend (maybe sub appearance) and then start the midweek PL game. I think I'll watch closely the weekend and pounce after. Will miss prob 1 price rise

I'm happy to have him for a few weeks. What other options are you talking about? Defoe and Austin? Realistically, it's only between Austin and Nacho for me. I don't mind the transfer aspect. Also, most people on here are saying that Austin is just as likely to get rested so if you bear that in mind, Nacho and Austin may start the same amount of games over the next few

You need to upgrade a def and upgrade Allen. He's not a 4th mid. But in doing that you should think about upcoming fixtures, recent form, team balance, rotation risk etc. Not just look at the last GW. Firm to Mane is a total sideways move.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

          Why ignore KDB and Iheanacho?

Given both excelled the last time Sergio Aguero was absent from the City side through suspension are we in danger of overlooking this pair of City assets through the glare of Chelsea and Arsenal stars?

With Leicester and Watford up next both certainly have the fixtures. And with a goal last night Iheanacho proved he has the form.

Which if any of this pair are you consideing drafting in?

I do not trust Pep any more, especially in a week with three league games. I don't think he can be relied on to avoid excessive rotation, so I will be avoiding City full stop.

This. I have to see Pep starting him first. (for Iheanacho). KDB too expensive, but loving the guy.

I'd rather try my luck with Origi. 🙂 Hopefully Sturridge isn't fit enough. But like I said. It's a punt, could pay off and could easily backfire.

I just can't warrant selling Austin (with his fixtures) for iheanacho, despite rating him highly. Love KDB but he's too tough to fit in when Hazard and Sanchez are in such good form.
In short, it's bad timing otherwise I'd be all over them.

This pretty much sums it up for me, the timing isn't great.

We're already a little worried about how Pep will line up each week so I'm not sure why I'd spend £10.8m on KDB when I can get Sanchez for a little more or Hazard for a little less, just no room at the inn.

Iheancho is an interesting one and I do like the price, when he starts he scores. Austin has Middlesbrough (h) next up though and not sure I can justify a -8 for Nacho. After that he could be a replacement but it's a 3 week replacement before having to get rid again.

Exactly. A 3 week purchase seems unnecessary, particularly given that (for me) Austin would likely come back in.
The city confidence doesn't seem great at the moment either.

Massive reply fail below. Andy Carroll gives me nightmares after the 9 point dgw triple captain last season. Are you not keen on Austins fixtures?

No room for KDB as i already have Alexis and Hazard . Will consider Iheanacho for Austin though.

have a couple of more pressing issues before before i can get Nacho

I need to get rid of Deeney so i'm considering Austin or Nacho. I'm very tempted by Nacho. I'm just unsure on his minutes.. I might just go for it as the general consensus on Austin is that he will get rotated quite a bit over the next few weeks..?

I think with Iheanacho playing the full 90 last night, he will be rested against Leic and then play the midweek game. My thinking is wait and see how the weekend pans out and get Nacho in for the midweek game.
KDB is just too expensive for me with a MD of Sanchez Hazard Firmino Capoue Siggy

Definitely no room at the inn for KdB.

Need to see if I can find space for Nacho - perceivably Kane Austin Nacho could be a decent front 3. Might see if he plays on the weekend - the midweek game home vs. Watford is surely a strong fixture to have him, but I'll have to be convinced he's def starting over a KdB false 9 as it'll be for a -4.

              Kdb Haz Alexis Siggy Cap
              Costa Anichebe Kane

              Capoue for CP/sun
              Anichebe for burn/LIVP

              I can live with that.

Neither, Kane is priority for me the next three weeks and allows an easier route back into Aguero or Ibra after that.

I also have Costa and Defoe and their form is too good at the moment. Defoe to Nacho would be the choice but he's been great so far.

I also got Sanchez in this week as a long-term solution, massive price rise this week and lovely fixtures soon. KDB would've been the other option but his starts have been too patchy to draft in.

Iheanacho looks ideal for me as a Benteke owner over gwks 16-18.

KDB has played more than 60 minutes in 10/14 games.
He has only blanked in 3 games this season in those 10 games. (is any other player more consistent?)
And managed to get an assist once as a sub too.

If you believe that KDB will definitely be starting regularly, you should be getting him.
I have used my FT and cant afford a straight swap, so will wait one more week before pulling the trigger.

Because, as already pointed out in a different hot topic, City are not in the form they were the last time Aguero missed out. They were scoring for fun at the start of the season and Iheanacho could finish the chances Aguero got in the previous games. They are not creating that many chances now so not worth it for me, especially with Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal requiring a lot of funds ( and providing points in contrast to City)

Seriously considering Allen and Foster to KDB and a 4.0 (leaving me with Pickford as my primary keeper.

That would leave me with a frightening front 7:

            Haz / Sanchez / KDB / Firm / Kane / Costa / Austin

And Lovren, Mcauley and Pieters in defence. Next week one of Mc or Lov to a saints defender.

It's either the above or Allen to Alli and one of my defence to Alonso. The likelihood is option two will probably yield better returns.

Timing is not right for KDB. Can't afford him with a midfield of Sanchez, Hazard, Firmino and Siggy. On the other hand I really like Nacho, when he plays he always delivers. Still I can't ignore Austin's fixtures and I'm already on a -4.

I really like their prospects and will probably get both for the upcoming December programme.
The general flock consensus around here and elsewhere funnily have concluded that Pep is the fpl devil, the team is out of form and everybody will be rotated.
The best December differential transfers imo.

Because Pep can't be trusted to play them.

I have had a no City policy since losing Aguero. I doubt that will change while Guardiola is manager there. Aguero is the only one of them I'd ever consider.

Bought Iheanacho in for this GW. Leicester and Watford are too good to ignore. Also own Austin , so Kane/Ibra. Costa is my third striker.

KDB not worth the 10.8m IMO. Doesn't score enough goals for me. Yes , he may improve without Aguero but Iheanacho looks a safer punt as he costs 4m less

Keep Austin for MID (h) then potentially bring in Nacho for three games.

Good article Jonty. I'm new to the site. My team is as follows:

            Courtois (Pickford)
            Pieters, Stones, Dann, Clyne (McAuley)
Sanchez (c), Mane, Sigurdsson, Capoue, (Traore)
            Costa, Kane, (Diomande)

I've used my free transfer to bring in Costa for Aguero. I've not taken a hit all season but thinking Iheanacho for Diomande before the weekend. This would leave me 0.2m in the bank. Thoughts would be appreciated. I'm guessing Jonty will approve!

Yes I would, since you have a bad defence this week there is a good chance of the hit paying off immediately. And you want Alonso long term anyway. Means yoy will habe to stick with Diomande though. Try to upgrade Capoue later since you are playing him every week

Ya I think Alonso is a must and either Cap/Dio can start this week with both having ok home fixtures. Dio can become Anichebe easy enough for the Xmas period if I don't have enough funds to do anyone else

Good morning DZ, is this too heavy in defence ? (Toby comes in next week, the rest I have already)

          Heaton - Pickford
          Alderweireld - Alonso - Brunt - Cedric - Friend
          Sanchez - Hazard - Firmino - Siggy - Phillips
          Kane - Austin - Iheanacho

I know. Phillips is my back-up mid. I know Iheanacho will be benched in 1 or 2 over the next weeks, so I prefer him to step up instead of some 4.3 monkey. Makes me feel better to have quality on my bench for Christmas.

Toby a rotation risk. Just back from injury and the games come in thick and fast. Dier will be totally out of the side when Toby returns IMO, so would expect him to slot in for one of the easier games

Hmmmm. The grav is showing on the back end at least, not sure why it's not showing here. As per Tim below - did you select G?

          Alonso/Walker/Holebas(McAuley,Amat)
          Siggy/Hazard/Sanchez/Firm(Zaha)
          Anichebe/Kane/Costa

Any changes to starting 11 ?
Before GW16 I want Can and Eriksen for Siggy and Zaha, before GW17 Holebas to Boro def.

Captain choice is going to be so hard this week?

          EDEN?
          ALEXIS?
          DIEGO?

Brought in Hazard for a hit this week and have a gut feel at the minute for him. But it's so close!

Four last weeks, returns have been: -2, DNP, 0, 1. Watford have been wretched recently, especially with their beaten-up defensive corps. I'm hanging on to Janmaat for the moment, but he's not a source of joy.

          Friend, Amat, Smith, Clyne, Holebas
          Hazard, Firmino, Sánchez, Fletcher, Allen
          Costa, Kane, Austin

Already used free transfer to get Kane in for Aguero

Should i take a -4 point hit for ( 2.1mil in the bank)

          a) Austin to Origi
          b) Allen to Can
          c) Firmino to Mane
          d) Friend/Amat/Holebas to a stronger defender (who???)

Think B is a good shout. Allen has seemingly had his time in the sun - I removed for Sanchez this week - and Can looking like the man who will take the mantle as the best budget 4th mid.

Depends on your price point, but Eriksen is on the set pieces and is probably the least rotation risk.

Tend to think Eriksen flatters to deceive - will score big one week but struggles with inconsistency a lot of the time I've owned him at least.

Probably Alli for me, think he'll play the most in that no10 role due to his effective link up with HK

I tend to agree. Eriksen comes to life when the game is already won so I think his stats could be a bit misleading. Saying that I still think it's a toss up between him and Alli.

He had a good period last year when he'd score me goals in the last minutes of a game, but I tend to think Alli is the better fpl prospect in turns of consistent returns. Bit like a lower tier Sanchez vs. Ozil debate I suppose

I got Eriksen in last week. I think he's the most nailed on and has set pieces, also his stats have been great so I'm told. Son is explosive though but let me down earlier in the season. Haven't really got a valid reason not to get Alli apart from he's a bit "meh".

Repost - question for the ffs team - how often is RMT updated? Not sure it's quite reflecting current form!

          Couple of examples;
Brunt underestimated, but is oop in a flying WBA team
Kaku overestimated in an Everton team looking bereft of ideas, plus Yannick out for the season!

          Thanks!!

Found it, thanks. To sum up for everyone:

Barragan, Chambers, Gibson, Fabio - thats the preffered lineup right now. Friend is coming on LB instead of Fabio. Fabio might be switched on RB ahead of Barragan but its unlikely.

Looks like its between Gibson, Chambers and Friend for me.

Is Stones to Alonso worth a hit ?. I'd play him instead of Amat this GW.

          Mt current D is

          Foster (Jak)
          Kosceilny, Kone, Amat (Stones, Vertongen)

Be interesting to see if Perez can displace Walcott as RW starter by then. Am guessing that Wally still gets the start this weekend but gets subbed off for Perez on the hour.
