Scout Notes – Europa League – Thursday

Henrikh Mkhitaryan returns from injury to score a vital away goal as Manchester United do just enough in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 16 tie.

FC Rostov 1 Manchester United 1

An ugly pitch led to an ugly match in which the two goals were the only moments of quality, with Manchester United’s effort tilting the tie very much in their favour.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored for the visitors, sweeping home Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s skilled cut-back as Jose Mourinho’s men produced an assured first-half performance.

The second-half belonged to the Russians, however. They deserved their equaliser and pushed United hard until the final whistle of a niggly match that was high on fouls – 38 between the teams – but low on finesse.

The wind, the cold and that pitch were chiefly to blame, though at least the return of Mkhitaryan afforded Jose something to cheer about.

Because of United’s packed schedule, the Armenian has missed only one league match since injuring his hamstring against Saint Etienne last month. His recovery – and goal – came as the Red Devils embarked on another four-match run across three competitions and ten days.

After the match, though, Mourinho admitted that the former Dortmund man – who was stationed in a central support role before being replaced midway through the second period – isn’t quite up to full fitness due to that stint on the sidelines.

“We know he cannot play 90 minutes. We knew he would only play 60 minutes – it doesn’t matter [what] the result [was], we made that decision together as he is not in the best condition. We gave him freedom to play in attacking positions with Zlatan, to try to find spaces to score. He did well and managed to finish the game without injury, which is important for us.”

Mourinho made seven changes to the side that drew with Bournemouth, but more strikingly moved to a back three in which Ashley Young and Daley Blind were used as wing-backs.

That formation could very well be wheeled out again for Monday’s FA Cup quarter-final tie with Chelsea and offers Fantasy managers the chance to pick from extra defensive options should Mourinho stick with his new tactic when his side returns to league duties in Gameweek 29.

With three clean sheets from their last four starts, United defenders are certainly worth considering in the short term. Once their Gameweek 28 blank is done and dusted, they’ll face Middlesbrough and Sunderland away and West Brom and Everton at Old Trafford.

Their run-in is tough – Chelsea at home in Gameweek 33 ushers in a schedule also involving Arsenal, Spurs and Man City all away before the season ends. However, with at least two double Gameweeks to come, we will surely be calling on United assets and a certain Zlatan Ibrahimovic once again.

In the short-term, the Swede is out of the equations – he now starts a three-match ban that will keep him out of Fantasy action until Gameweek 31.

The predictable exodus is now in full flow – Ibrahimovic has been sold by more than 238,000 managers this week – and the 2.1%-owned Mkhitaryan, while not a like-for-like replacement, could be an alternative route into United’s promising upcoming fixtures, at least as a differential.

Should United, as expected, see off Rostov next Thursday at Old Trafford, their Europa League quarter-final tie would take place on April 13 and 20, either side of that huge home match with Chelsea.

Team: Romero, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Blind (Valencia 90+2), Pogba, Herrera (Carrick 90+2), Fellaini, Mkhitaryan (Martial 67), Young, Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: De Gea, Mata, Lingard, Rashford.

So now that Phillips is out, a -4 is needed to put 9 out this week.

    Heaton (Given)
    Coleman, Smith (Walker, Monreal, Stones)
    Grosicki, Siggy, Firm, Lanzini (Eriksen)
    Lukaku (C), Rondon (Kane)

Should I field 9 or move Stones for another -4?

What's everybodies thinking on a saints defender for the DGW's?? (Yoshida?) They are due to play lots of the big teams in the run in. Is it necessary? Do you think they will keep clean sheets or is it just for cover?

This is confusing, need help to figure out a rational choice for keepers:

    1. Heaton: I have Mane, planning to captain him (no other Liv exposure)
    2. Foster: I have McAuley as well as Coleman/Lukaku

I'm pretty sure neither will keep a clean sheet, but it's kind of stupid to play a keeper when you're rooting for his opposite number to get a hatty right? Plus, McAuley is enough WB defence cover

But on the other hand, save points from Lord Heaton! And if Liv stick to script, they'll do poorly against Burnley...which opens up a whole new level of problems

Should I just captain Llorente? 😛

    1. Respect My Authoritah
      • 10 Years

Foster. WBA won't concede more than one imo, and have a good chance for a cleanie

Didn't Crystal Palace just score 2 against them?! And then against West Ham as well 2 GWs ago?

And then we're talking about Everton - they're definitely a better side and in much better form

          • 10 Years

Yes. But if you've ever followed Pulis teams, they tighten up a lot after shoddy displays. And Pulis hasn't conceded a goal in his last 3 visits to Goodison Park.

            • 7 Years

No, I do follow WB and know Pulis has historically been the guy who gets you cleanies.

But this season has been a different story all together, they have always conceded. ANd there has been no sign of tightening up. And more importantly, crossing that 40 point barrier seems to have had a relaxing effect on the players

But I see your point. Might stick with Foster because Burnley away are even worse

            Thanks!

I was going to get Lanzini/Antonio plus Llorente this week for a -4 and then sell Phillips for Carroll and bring in Kane for Anichebe next week for a -4. Does it make sense to do a -8 this week and bring in Carroll? If it were a Mane etc. I could justify it but it is Tom Carroll. The flipside is at least he will play this week (I probably won't ever play him in the future).

Last week was a tricky one to get right really. I had 3 choices: drop Alli; drop Hazard; don't get a City midfielder. All three looked unpalatable but seeing I was playing defensively I took Hazard out for Sterling.

The optimum route in hindsight was Zlatan to Aguero and leave it at that. But I didn't really consider removing Zlatan ahead of Bournemouth. Who was to know he'd get -1 and a ban. 🙁

I've been thinking of the -2 hit (everyone's talking about) and I'm a bit confused 'cause that's the case for not only blank players but for players who will play as well. For example, if I go with changing 5 players for -20 hit points, and sadly the new 5 ones got me 2 pts each = total 10 pts. Then the final outcome would be a -10. However, if I have left those 5 in the first place and they got me a total zero, then zero is def better than a -10. So how come for blank players it would be as a -2 hit and in the end, zero is better than a -2 pt.

Of course. No point in getting players who can't balance out the money we invested

      A. it gives you the chance to get rid of deadwood (e.g phillips, allen, capoue)
      B. they only need 2 points to make the transfer free, that gamble seems worth it

So you're saying changing 5 players for a -20 pts is a gamble worth taking?

This is one of the few opportunities to remove players who don't play GW 28 that you don't want anymore for only -2. It is effectively a half price FPL sale.

What sale? I'm already losing 4 pts. If the new one gets me 2 pts, then I actually lost -2. I lose 4 pts if the new player blanks for a red card for example.
