Team Of The Season – Seamus Coleman

Following two very productive seasons, Everton’s Seamus Coleman regressed during 2015/16, largely due to two separate injury lay-offs.

As a result, he began this season slightly under the radar – in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Republic of Ireland defender saw his price drop to 5.5.

That already looked good value, given his attacking capabilities from right-back and the prospect of fresh impetus from new Toffees boss Ronald Koeman.

Sure enough, after ticking over during the first half of the season, a favourable run of fixtures from the mid-point onwards saw Coleman put together a sensational run of form.

That spell ultimately earned the defender a place in our Team of the Season.

The Statistics

An ankle injury meant Coleman didn’t make his first appearance of the campaign until Gameweek 4, when he picked up six points in the 3-0 victory over Sunderland.

He followed that up with a goal in the 3-1 win against Middlesbrough a week later, and further strikes at Goodison Park followed against Swansea City and Arsenal during the first half of the campaign.

In terms of clean sheets, Coleman registered 10 over the course of the season, with Everton keeping 13 in total – an increase from the 12 that Southampton managed under the stewardship of Koeman in 2015/16.

But it was a 12-point haul in the emphatic 4-0 victory over Manchester City in Gameweek 21 that put Fantasy managers on red alert regarding the Toffees defender.

Coleman registered an assist and maximum bonus points in that win, which came ahead of a hugely favourable schedule for Koeman’s side.

By this stage, Coleman was owned by just 195,977 FPL managers.

With Koeman now dabbling with a three-man defence, deploying Colman at wing-back, Coleman flourished further with a 15-point score in the 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace. At that point, it became clear that he was pushing for ‘must-have’ status.

Coleman would go on to produce four clean sheets, three assists and four bonus points in his next seven starts as his price rose to a high of 6.1 in Gameweek 29, with the right-back then owned by 851,796 bosses.

But his season was then brought to a cruel conclusion when he suffered a broken leg during Republic of Ireland’s World Cup Qualifier against Wales at the end of March.

He ended the campaign with 133 points in FPL, placing him seventh among defenders in the game.

In terms of points per match (ppm), Coleman was ranked fourth with 5.1, while his four double-digit scores earned him four appearances in the Dream Team – only Bournemouth’s Charlie Daniels (five) received more call-ups among defenders.

The Prospects

While there is no exact timeline on Coleman’s return, early reports following his operation suggested that he may be running again by August. However, given the apparent severity of his double leg break, we should be prepared for him to be sidelined for at least the first half of the 2017/18 campaign.

The defender did sign a new five-year contract with the Toffees earlier this month, with the faith shown by the club illustrating they have no doubts that he will make a full recovery.

His performances this season might merit a price rise to 6.0 in FPL, although his injury could mean he remains at 5.5.

In Coleman’s absence, Mason Holgate deputised at right-back. Youngster Jonjoe Kenny is another option for Koeman, with the Republic of Ireland international himself heaping praise on how well the two youngsters performed in his absence.

But Koeman will surely explore the possibility of bringing in a more senior option, with Southampton’s Cedric Soares and the recently released Cuco Martina, having both previously worked with Koeman at St Mary’s, likely to be on the radar.

Holgate certainly looks set to see his price of 4.0 in FPL rise this summer, perhaps to 5.0, while senior defenders Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka are likely to warrant price tags of 5.5 given their attacking threat.

As for Coleman, his progress will be keenly monitored, and should he be able to recreate the form he showed before his injury, there’s little doubt that his Fantasy stock will soar once again.

Seamus - glad to see him there. Think he and Alonso this year really exploded the idea not to take a -4 for a defender... OK, heavy caveat, but in their cases, it was 100% justified as you stood such a decent chance to get your hit back with profit (when they were firing, anyway!)

Average signing. If he has £150m to spend then buy proven quality. Why doesn't he go out to get someone like Aubameyang?

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 11 months ago

Yeah frustrating. Those signings should be attempted as soon as possible. But instead it's like Wenger is managing for the first time, never learning from mistakes. "Oh look, wingbacks have done well this season" - buys wing/full-backs. "Oh look, people say we lack mettle and spine" - buys Xhaka the hacker. "Oh look, criticism about poor quality up front" - plays Sanchez up front temporarily, before attemping to sign Henry yet again this summer.

He can't win though, can he? Because if he doesn't react to trends and criticism of his team in its latest iteration he's 'stubborn Arsène'.

I agree that he has far too much of an eye on the bargain, the young talent he can sell on for a profit, and he doesn't seem to realise that this policy only works when the team is performing well and makes those players look at least as good as they are, if not better. If he has a collection of unpolished diamonds they will always stay unpolished because there isn't enough of a structure within the squad to carry them and cushion some of the bumps of the development process.

Wenger, for example, would never have signed Zlatan. It goes against everything he stands for, but if he had done so, Arsenal would surely have finished in the top four. Sometimes playing for the short-term goal helps you with the longer-term ones too.

Exactly. People on here have this deluded idea that Premier League teams can sign whoever they want. Aubameyang can go to pretty much any club looking for a striker. Why would he choose Arsenal?

              1. For some players sure. If you think this applies to all players you're wrong.
              2. PSG and the other continental big boys are capable of offering big wages too.
              3. Sanchez doesn't make anywhere near that at Arsenal and very, very few players make that much anywhere in the world. Throwing that kind of money at Aubameyang would be ridiculous.

Only the worst sources known to man are reporting the Emil Forsberg story. Ignore all of Metro, Sun, Star, Mail, Express, Mirror etc.

In my opinion Arsenal have next to no chance of signing Forsberg for £30m, and with no CL (which RBL have). He's repeatedly said how happy he is there. His girlfriend also plays for Leipzig.

Arsenal are going to have to sell quite a few players if they intend to meet the Financial Fair Play rules and still strengthen their team enough to challenge. They don't have the same level of revenue as the top sides in the league, so will have to spend more cautiously.

But if they do strengthen sufficiently Ozil could be great at 8.5m/9.0m for good value Arsenal covfefe

Everton are poised to make Southampton's Cuco Martina their first signing of the summer. Manager Ronald Koeman is keen to bring in cover for injured right-back Seamus Coleman.
Big spending Everton, whose owners are pretending to have up to £175m in their transfer kitty, will pip a host of Europe's elite to sign the much sought after, out of contract, 3rd choice Southampton right back on a free.

About 3 years ago off the top of my head. Perhaps that's a bit harsh. He needs games though doesn't he, Rooney. He can't be just coming in and out of the side and not getting properly match fit.

Rooney in his pomp was one of the best players i'v ever had the pleasure to see.. his decline over the last few years is staggering and he has to take responsibility for that.. This could be one of the reasons.
Although I feel the . main reason could be the amount of injuries he has suffered throughout the years. The injury against Bayern in 2010 was pretty bad. And the other reason is him not aging so well. There could be many reasons for it. But still there have been moments of brilliance like the fa cup final against Palace.
Feel bad for the present Rooney who looks jaded.

Rooney is one of the greatest players ever to come out of England his record speaks for itself

I think if he moved club and retired from English international duty he might get a second wind and get a few more years playing at a pl club

I think Everton would suit him down to the ground at this stage of his career he would not have to uproot his family and will be going back to his own roots in Liverpool

United frequently gave in to more and more outlandish wage demands. Rooney grew more and more complacent. Showed up to preseason out of shape and overweight. His first touch has deserted him because he hasn't worked to stay sharp. Quite frankly, he hasn't really cared for a few years.

Will never forget him in his prime, will always respect what he achieved but I won't be shedding any tears if an overpaid, disinterested player leaves. Got my back up when he threatened to join City for higher wages, did the same when he threatened to join Chelsea. There's occasionally a narrative that United fans should be loyal to him yet he's shown time and again his loyalty is to the paycheck.

Yup, but if he's valued at say £40m by Bayern and co this year with just 1yr to run on his contract, surely it's better business to just keep the boy 🙂

Agree. Don't think anyone will pay what he's worth in one season to arsenal, and nor do I think they'll replace him at all with the amount they could get.

I can foresee a gentleman's agreement-stay for one year, we will sign x, y and Z, contract is on the table but walk away if we don't win the league.

The reverse logic is why I said Sunderland should have sold Defoe in January. A player's value is relative to the club's situation. No amount of money is worth letting Alexis walk away now. And they are stubborn and well off enough not to need it.

He would be straight in my team but back in the real world Arsenal are running a business and having already lost out on the lucrative money that comes with CL this season and more than likely next too they aren't going to piss away the 40-50 million that a queue of clubs would be willing to pay to snap him up right now..

No one is saying he WILL stay, just surmising there's a CHANCE he could. Not sure why you're finding that difficult to swallow but until it's confirmed either way of course there's a chance, however small.
Really no need to be such a judgemental douche - we're all allowed to ask stupid and clever questions alike here 🙂

Not really a matter of him staying as he could stay and sign a new contract.

The discussion is how likely it is that Sanchez will leave Arsenal on a free transfer after playing this coming season for the club.

I don't see it as likely at all, I don't even see a remote chance.

Save your stupid douche lingo. It's ok if everyone agrees with you but not if they disagree. I'll disagree of course, what your suggesting is completely brain dead imo. We will wait and see does Sanchez leave next summer in a free transfer.

The question was framed from a 'could Arsenal cut their nose to spite their face perspective'. I don't think (and haven't said) it's THE most likely scenario, but it's nevertheless a fascinating possibility, however unlikely. WHU tried the same with Payet and didn't get very far. Sanchez could turn out to be a different beast in that respect.

The douche comment is just a light response to YOUR insinuation of my mushroom habitry - fair game no? 🙂

if they're running a business, I imagine they'd probably value their biggest asset at higher than the numbers you are quoting. Especially as selling him would mean pissing away CL qualfication again.

His worth his relative to the length of his contract.

Really the money being bandied about for Sanchez is huge money for a player with one year left on his contract.

What's the option? Hold him even if he wants away because if he doesn't sign a new deal we can assume he wants away. So hold him when he doesn't want to be there to qualify for the champions league and then let him walk out the door for nothing whether they do or not.

As I said he signs a contract or he transfers out.

Why he would have his time run down to gun Arsenal for glory is beyond me.

Arsenal don't hold the aces here, Sanchez does. they blew their chance when they blew Champions League. Sanchez dictates what he does all Arsenal can hope if he is happy to stay for a big pay day.

His worth is relative to what he can earn them in one season.

Sanchez doesn't hold the aces because he's under contract. He's not going to go on strike like Payet.

In a normal situation yes but not when this particular asset is in his final year of his contract and walks for free at the end of next season.. they can't possibly ask for more than 40- 50 million in this case.. they wouldn't be pissing away CL qualification either as they didn't achieve it this year with him in the form of his life and next season will be even tougher again with EL commitments.. On top of that keeping as player against their will who despite his great form has clearly looked disillusioned at the teams failings isn't going to do anyone any good

Reckon this team is achievable for less than £300m. Pretty good team IMO

    Pickford
    Maguire - Gibson - Keane
Jenkinson - Wilshere - De Roon - Robertson
    Sigurdsson - Barkley
    Lukaku
