Moving Target

Moving Target – Michael Keane

Hot on the heels of the signing of Spanish forward Sandro Ramirez, Everton announced the arrival of Burnley defender Michael Keane for a fee that could rise to a club-record equalling £30 million.

The 24-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year contract, and becomes the Toffees’ sixth summer signing, along with Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Nathangelo Markelo, Sandro and Henry Onyekuru, although the latter will spend the 2017/18 season on loan at Anderlecht.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Everton manager Ronald Koeman revealed his high hopes for the England international:

“Michael was high among the players we wanted to bring to Everton this summer, and I’m delighted he is here at the club… I believe there is much more to come from Michael and that’s what makes his signing really exciting for me – we will see his development as a player along with the progression overall… It’s another really positive sign of the direction the club is moving in. He’s 24 years old, his best years are to come, he’s an England international, too, and I couldn’t be more pleased that he’s now a Blue.”

The History

Born in Stockport, Keane began his youth career at Manchester United, and made his professional debut as a substitute in a League Cup tie against Aldershot Town in October 2011.

He was handed a first start in the same competition a year later against Newcastle United, and also started in the next round against Chelsea, before being sent out on loan to Championship side Leicester City.

Keane made 22 appearances for the Foxes, scoring twice, before taking in further loan spells at Derby County and Blackburn Rovers in the second tier, with his spell at Ewood Park yielding three goals from 13 matches.

The defender then joined Burnley on loan for the first half of the 2014/15 Premier League campaign, and joined the Clarets on a permanent basis in January 2015 for an undisclosed fee.

He made 21 appearances during that season, but couldn’t prevent Sean Dyche’s side from avoiding relegation to the Championship.

Keane stayed at Turf Moor, though, and was a key figure in their title-winning season in 2015/16, registering five goals and three assists in 44 appearances, while also being named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.

Last season, Keane once again starred for the Clarets as they maintained their top-flight status, producing two goals and one assist in 35 matches. He was also among the six nominees for the PFA Young Player of the Year.

Having represented the Republic of Ireland at U17 and U19 levels, Keane switched his allegiance to England, featuring 24 times at U19, U20 and U21 levels, before making his senior debut in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Germany in March on the back of his impressive club form.

The Prospects

After winning many admirers last season, leading to speculation surrounding a potential move to former side United, Chelsea or Liverpool, Keane’s signature represents something of a coup for the Toffees.

The 24-year-old, whose strengths include his calmness in possession and his ability to win aerial duels, should provide a major boost to the Everton rearguard, which has already been bolstered by the addition of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Koeman’s side kept a pretty impressive 13 clean sheets last season, conceding 44 goals – a number only bettered by five teams.

Ashley Williams was the mainstay in defence, making 35 starts, while Phil Jagielka (25 starts) and Ramiro Funes Mori (16 starts) job shared as the preferred partner to the Welsh international

It’s likely that Keane will partner Williams in central defence if Koeman opts for a four-man backline, although he experimented with a three-man defence on occasion.

Looking at the underlying statistics from last season, Keane’s potential impact at both ends of the pitch is obvious.

He claimed fourth overall for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI), with a total of 378 just behind Williams (382) in third spot.

The Toffees’ new boy was number one for successful aerial duels in 2016/17 – a tally of 149 was well ahead of Everton’s best defender Jagielka, with 88. His 65.6% aerial success rate was als higher than any Toffees defender and up markedly on Williams’ 57%.

Ranked third for touches in the box (65) among FPL defenders, Keane registered 22 attempts from inside the opposition area – just three shy of Marcos Alonso at the summit.

Last season, Williams and Jagielka came in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), while full-backs Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines came in at 5.5. Keane’s goal threat could mean he comes in at 5.5 this time around, yet his potential for points at both ends of the pitch could persuade many to earmark him as their weapon of choice in Koeman’s backline.

Should Romelu Lukaku depart Goodison Park this summer, Baines could be in the mix to take penalties, potentially boosting his appeal, although new boy Klaassen is also expected to come into consideration, having scored five of his seven spot-kicks for Ajax last term.

That situation will require monitoring during pre-season, then, along with the issue of who will start at right-back in the absence of the injured Coleman, with Mason Holgate or Jonjoe Kenny potentially providing a cut-price route should Koeman fail to recruit in that position.

But in any case, Everton’s brutal opening schedule (STO, mci, che, TOT, mun) means that there is likely to be little appetite to invest in their Fantasy assets in our initial squads.

The addition of Keane looks a significant coup for Everton, and with Idrissa Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin in central midfield, there looks real potential for the Toffees to improve on the 13 shut-outs recorded last season.

Those opening fixtures should provide us with the information as to who will emerge as the go-to option, with the impressive Keane expected to be jostling for attention at the front of the queue.

I dont really know how you could full prof it but maybe something along the lines of linked mobile phone number.

            😆

That would drop a lot of managers, but not protect from double-teaming the way the likes of Ruth do it. The missus has her own passport, you know. And own phone too, probably.

Phone number may work but easy to get a number from a friend who doesn't play.

Passport would potentially reduce players as not everyone would have one.

No the phone verification would not be a proper fix for the issue but would discourage the practice.

If a cheat ever managed to win it they would have a better chance of being exposed though.

I suppose yeah, how would you feel if they removed the limit on number of teams? Would it ruin the game?

Personally I don't think it would as people already do it and it would have much of an effect on the game overall

They might as well if they are not going to enforce the rules.

I would not be diametrically apposed on a manager having a number of teams for entering different types of leagues and that as long as it was transparent who the manager of the teams was so that cheating in mini leagues could be curtailed.

If you pick 2 of them, you miss decent scores by another one. A decent midfielder pick means a goodbye to decent forward.
Kane seems to be a must have.
Jesus or kun with this city attack and fixtures look essential
Lacazette priced 10-11 will outscore any midfielder in the game

What are we thinking for Man City options for the season?

For a while I'd been pretty sure I'd start the season with Sane and Jesus but I'm starting to feel there'll just be too much rotations likely to avoid at the beginning.

I'm going with Sane if Sanchez doesn't sign. Played most games when bedded into the team and is a favourite of Pep's. Someone here also posted analysis of Pep's time with Bayern where his wingers, particularly his left one, was a mainstay in the side, relatively. I'll go with Sanchez if he does sign. Might consider KDB once we the game launches and we know more.

Pretty much this. Sane if Sanchez doesn't sign. Jesus and KDB options as well.

Regarding Jesus, are worried he could end up on the right wing too often when he does play? Seems a bit expensive for a striker if he's going to be out wide. I know he did well there at the end of the season but that was only a couple of games so we can't really tell anything.

I really don't care as long as he's playing. Played as a winger a lot for Palmeiras and Brazil, recently moved to striker. I'm fine either way, he's proved he can do it.

Too many question marks for me. If City ends up with no signings other than a left back, then I would consider Silva. He should be slightly cheaper than last year, and I don't see him getting benched before CL starts.

Sané and Jesus depends a bit on their prices and where Bernardo Silva is going to play. I'm not bothered about Jesus playing on the wing. Guardiola's wingers tend to do a lot of the striker's job. I expect Sterling to get considerably more game time than he did at the end of last season. It was mostly his fitness level that was the issue, not that Guardiola preferred other players.

Agüero and KdB are too expensive. I don't trust them as captains due to random rotations, so I'd rather use the money on nailed on captains such as Kane, Sanchez and Hazard.

Looking at Sané and Jesus. Sané was basically undroppable last 15 games or so, provides something different to the others and had a rapid improvement curve.

Is a frontline of three premium strikers ever worth a bench of 4.0, 4.0, 4.5, 4.5?

I did better before (top 1k) when I had junk on the bench. It made decision making easier. Might go back to it. Main issue is getting the right keeper. Foster at 4.5m may suffice for the first while.

It used to be possible to have an even cheaper bench, and the money saved would not necessarily have to be spent on premium strikers.

Back in 2011/12 I started with a bench of Ruddy(NOR,4.0), Simpson(NEW,4.0), De Laet(NOR,4.0) and Dyer(SWA,4.5), and they were all starters for their teams (they scored 15 points between them in GW1).
Later I replaced Ruddy with Vorm(SWA,4.0).

But there are far fewer starters for 4.0 now than there were then - it really all depends on whether FPL prices any expected starters that cheaply.

Odds on manager and transfer markets are almost always wide of the mark. Bookies have little more information than your average punter on a club's thinking.

I'd suggest 4/7 on Chelsea is a very generous price.

Bookies' odds should really only be seen as an indication as to where the most money has been bet. They balance odds to guarantee a profit, nothing more nothing less.

Aye, but much more room for them to get the starting prices wrong in these particular markets than in any other due to their lack of info. Can't imagine there is too much money being traded on transfers.

If those reports had been right, he would have had 2-year contract offers by PSG and Inter on table long since and could have chosen one of them. But even if there were contract talks with those clubs, it's clear he was never offered that 2-year deal. And I still doubt there were even negotiations.

But he needed somebody to give him those 2 lucrative years, so the agent kept that story up about big clubs offering him that. Despite them denying it repetitively.

    Okay, I'm gonna say it.

At this point I don't even care about this Sanchez saga, I just want it over with.

We don't need him, Arsenal are screwed without him.
We'd love to have him, but we don't need him.

Nowadays it seems like City are so focused on this dumb deal that we haven't wrapped up any defensive signings apart from Ederson. Bernardo and Ederson were a great start, and now all I hear is Sanchez, Sanchez, Sanchez. Meanwhile, Everton are making tons of shrewd signings, and showing people how to do business in the transfer window.

For the good of everyone involved, I just want this done with. However it ends, I'm fine...though that may not apply to Arsenal fans.

I think most on Twitter say David Ornstein is very reliable. He tweeted a couple of things on July 1:

"Worth pointing out that as things stand Arsenal still yet to receive any offers for Sanchez, Wenger planning with him in the team #AFC #MCFC"

"#AFC made Sanchez big offer, hope he stays. But if set on leaving + fee acceptable possible he'll go this summer rather than free next #MCFC"

Still up in the air, but as it was the case all along, Arsenal are firmly in the driver's seat. If they meet whatever Alexis wants, he will stay 100%. It's when Arsenal decide they don't want to meet Alexis' demands, do Man City actually enter the frame.

A nailed Mourinho defender playing for a team that got joint most clean sheets last season, 17. Has bonus potential. Yes, he lacks goal threat, but he's probably the most secure United defensive option looking at the long-term, which is what I'm doing as I want to set and forget and use as least transfers as possible in defence.

          Underpriced at 5.5 imo.

I owned Bailly for like the last 10 weeks of the season, so I got a lot of his points. His bonus potential is not as much as it appears. He has minimal goal threat and does pick up booking every now and then. If he is the only nailed on starter, then by all means, but I doubt the United defense will be rotation central this and that means he goes to the back of the line if the others are priced identically.

Hmmm....I'm on the fence here. I seem to be able to see him at both prices the more I think about it tbh. Hope he's 5.5. In fact that does make sense if you compare him to say, Vertonghen, who's a similar FPL player. Plays for a great defence but zero goal threat keeps him at 5.5. I'm starting to see it now.

Arsenal looking good for next season if they actually pull that: keep the first team, add Lacazette, Mahrez, and Kola, and can keep Cazorla fit. An actual RB wouldn't harm them either. Bellerin doesn't look like he was too interested in defending and if he gets injured they'll have… Gabriel? Seriously?

Heard rumours he'd be completely past his injuries for next season. That can be complete bs of course. If it is, they need a new CM. Xhaka could sort of take his role, but although Coq gets too much stick here, he's absolutely fine, I'd really like somebody better there. You know, the way Chelsea has a French international backed up by Serbia international. Or Xhaka could be the last man back on midfield, if they paired him with someone mobile, technically apt and intelligent who did his own part in defence.

I know, but even if he stays, I think they need another RB. They can't rely just on Bellerin in any case. And, if he leaves, they're absolutely screwed.

Bellerin is an absolute liability for me. He does well against the lesser teams when in all honesty, they don't really need him. Really goes missing in the big games. Contrary to everyone wanting Arsenal to sign attackers, I wanted them to sign a LB, a RB and a Coq/Cazorla/Ramsey replacement. They got a LB which is good, the striker appears fine on paper, but the other two positions still need replacing. Just fyi, Arsenal scored 77 goals last year which was only 9 fewer than Spurs who really went crazy at the end. Everyone just goes overboard chasing attackers, when in this case, it is clearly the defense that has been the biggest problem.

      Off course he is staying.
How would they fit him into the City squad who would they drop/sell to accommodate him?
Might struggle to start every game for Munich which would drive him nuts.
PSG is not really a challenge for him.

He is the main man at Arsenal and that suits him down to the ground he is getting all the love and attention he need there so why would he risk a move?

If he can get his mojo back at Everton he might emerge as the bargain of the season.

I doubt they can keep me off the scoutcast this season. There would be mass defections to Who Got The Assist.

I'm expecting to be made honorary mod soon, too.

Reckon you should be mod ahead of TM anyway. I would turn the scoutcast if they asked me but each to their own. Reckon you would do great on it and add some much needed spice and humour.

Just not my cup of tea.

Nah, I'd never be a better mod than TM. It's simply not possible. He's up there with Mark and Jonty as Mr. FFS. He's got hulked green blood running through his veins!

Everyone on here will have the following starting defenders:

    Valencia - Cedric - Dawson.

It's all a bit predictable and, dare I say it, dull.

Jonty's nan has more of a goal threat than Bailly.

True, but would be decent value at 5.5. Also: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/07/04/moving-target-michael-keane/?hc_page=2#hc_comment_15820477

Interesting stuff. Mourinho is capable of stringing several clean sheets together. Could work out at £5.5.

Yoshida under threat from new centre half. McAuley's minutes likely to be managed.

Just 6 clean sheets last season. Conceded a lot of single goals very late on in games. Frustrating.

Yeah that was annoying last season. Hopefully tony gets some more 6 foot defenders in and they should be grand.

Who else do you fancy under 5.0m? I want to spend 8.5m max on keeper combo you see.Cant see any better options.

Tough one, will wait for prices. Pickford and a 4.0 is what I'm thinking but that's going to be 9.0.

Pickford with EVE tough first 5 fixtures(well apart from GW1)? My plan is Foster to Pickford in GW6 when EVE fixtures get juicy.

Defence is what is really interesting me this season. There are about a dozen defenders I want.

Midfielders I'm not too fussed on. Sanchez is the only I consider essential. Maybe Eriksen. But that's it, really.

I may replace low to mid price midfielders with premium wing backs. Similar PPG but £2 to £3m cheaper.

Kane will likely be in most teams, but should be plenty of contenders for the other spot(s).

One of the above for me. Will take Brunt if he's 5.0, rather than Dawson

Not keen on Cedric and I'll take my chances and go without Dawson if he is 5.0. Looking at Arsenal defenders especially if they are priced 5.5m.

The Arses I'll be monitoring are Holding to see if he starts in a back 3, and Kol[newboy] to see if he starts and beds in.
