Scout Report – Tom Ince

Huddersfield Town’s busy summer of recruitment continued on Tuesday with the signing of Derby County midfielder Tom Ince for an undisclosed fee, believed to be worth up to around £10 million.

The 25-year-old winger agreed a three-year deal with the Terriers, with the option of extending his contract for a further season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Huddersfield head coach David Wagner revealed what qualities he expects the former England U21 international will bring to his side:

“Everybody in England knows that Tom has high quality; he has been one of the best players in the Sky Bet Championship for many years now. He scores goals, creates them for others and is always a threat when he’s on the pitch… He has had a taste of the division for two short spells and he is desperate to show everyone that he belongs in the top division. I think he can be a big player for us.”

The History

Ince joined Liverpool’s academy in 2008 at the age of 16, and made his professional debut as a substitute in a League Cup tie against Northampton Town in September 2010.

He was then sent out on loan to League One side Notts County, where he scored twice in six matches, before joining Championship outfit Blackpool in August 2011 after declining a contract offer to remain at Liverpool.

The midfielder enjoyed a solid first season, registering six goals and seven assists in 33 league appearances, while he also scored in the 2-1 defeat to West Ham United in the Championship play-off final.

He then took his game to another level the following year, producing 18 goals and 14 assists in 44 matches. That prompted interest from both Premier League clubs and European giants such as Monaco and Inter Milan, but he ended up joining Crystal Palace on loan.

Ince totalled one goal and one assist in eight appearances for the Eagles before joining Hull City ahead of the 2014/15 season.

He failed to settle on Humberside and, following a loan spell at Nottingham Forest, it was another loan move, this time to Derby County, that saw Ince return to form.

The midfielder scored 11 goals in 18 appearances, convincing the Rams to sign Ince for £4.75 million in July 2015. And he has continued to put up impressive numbers over the last two seasons, tallying 26 goals and 15 assists in 90 matches.

Ince played six times for England U17s and U19s, and made 19 appearances for the U21s, producing three goals and seven assists.

The Prospects

Given the significant outlay made by the Terriers on Ince, it’s expected that the midfielder will command a regular starting spot in Wagner’s starting XI.

Last season, Ince made 47 of his 50 appearances in all competitions on the right wing, but he is equally capable of operating either on the opposite flank or even in a No 10 role.

His main qualities include his shooting, crossing, dribbling and ability to pick a pass, all of which should make him an intriguing Fantasy prospect.

Last term, it was Elias Kachunga (right) and Rajiv van La Parra (left) who were the favoured options out wide for Huddersfield, with Chelsea loanees Kasey Palmer and Izzy Brown sharing playing time in the central support role in the 4-2-3-1 formation.

The Terriers announced on Tuesday that Palmer will return to the club on a second season-long loan, so he looks to be a strong contender to start in the No 10 position.

Kachunga was Huddersfield’s top scorer last season with 12 goals, so he appears more likely to find a place in the side ahead of van La Parra, although the DR Congo international hasn’t played a lot of football on the left flank.

Given the number of additions made by Wagner already this summer, it’s clearly going to be crucial to analyse the Terriers during pre-season to assess what the likely starting XI will be.

Looking at Ince’s underlying statistics from last season, he impressively averaged a shot every 27.97 minutes, slightly superior to Palmer (30.83), and significantly better than both van La Parra (43.21) and Kachunga (52.27).

Indeed, only Fulham’s Sone Aluko managed more shots (134) than the 129 Ince produced in the Championship.

While around half of Ince’s goal attempts came from outside the box, he still averaged a shot from inside the penalty area every 55.51 minutes, again superior to Kachunga (64.68), Palmer (80.94) and van La Parra (84.21).

The former England U21 international also shone as a creator, averaging a key pass every 51.54 minutes, which while slightly inferior to Palmer (47.96), was better than both Kachunga (68.14) and van La Parra (164.20).

The data certainly indicates that Ince may well be the primary option among Huddersfield’s attacking midfielders, although Palmer also looks one to monitor should he be priced favourably.

Given his production, albeit in the Championship, Ince is likely to warrant a starting price of between 5.5 and 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

With the Terriers not facing any of last season’s top seven over the opening six Gameweeks (cpl, NEW, SOT, whm, LEI, brn), members of Wagner’s side could well emerge as popular budget options.

But with latest club-record signing Steve Mounie, along with fellow forward Laurent Depoitre and set-piece ace Aaron Mooy to also consider, choosing the right target may prove difficult.

Fantasy managers will hope pre-season will provide all important clues, with Ince likely to be at the forefront of our thinking – particularly if he can wrestle some set-piece duties from Mooy.

The 25-year-old has previously failed to grasp his opportunities in the top flight, but having gained more first-team experience, he should now be ready to make an impact at this level.

Ince certainly looks to have the potential to flourish as an FPL asset, and a strong pre-season could see him emerge as a popular budget option given Huddersfield’s favourable opening schedule.

How Man United should line up in my opinion:

    De Gea

    Valencia Lindelof Bailly Darmian

    Herrera

    Mhkitaryan Pogba Martial

    Lukaku Rashford

I know Jose won't actually line out like that and if they sign Lukaku its not a bad looking team eh? I feel we've always played better with 2 men up top!

No, could not complain. Has a golden boot in his future.

But he doesn't awaken any real passion either. I so do enjoy someone like Cantona, Zlatan etc. A player you get excited watching everytime he gets in to challenge, outcome good or bad, red card or a fantastic goal.

That's assuming that Lukaku converts every goal that ibra missed and can score every goal that ibra scored.

Ibra is one of the best strikers in the world. And Lukaku missed a sitter for Belgium recently that Ibra would have scored 100%

Not convinced on Tom Ince. Very much in the Nathan Redmond mode IMO. Looks good but doesn't deliver big points returns. Not as good as Redmond either.

The cheap FPL guys who do well are usually U21s who break into the first team e.g. Alli, Kane, Stephens, Holgate, Mawson. That is what I am looking for in my £4.5m and under players.

I'm going to use pre-season to scout them. Look at who has got a squad number, who has been playing, manager comments etc. I like the look of Kenny at Everton.

Tom Ince is at least the right type of player. I didn't think Zaha or King were ever going to perform in the PL, but they were amazing at times last year. I'm definitely not going to take a punt on Ince, but he could develop into a decent FPL prospect.

Zaha has shown flashes and improved his consistency last year - he is on my radar.

I still don't trust King - he is 25 and did nothing at Blackburn or in his first season at Bournemouth. Reminds me of when Ramsay killed it at Arsenal for one season.

I agree that Ince is an attacking player so he is 'right' in a FPL context. But history suggests the low price players to get are young prospects.

Let's all just forget about Lukaku going to United then. No point getting excited about anything these days.

Let's just talk about who will replace Darren Fletcher at West Brom instead. That's been confirmed so the hot topic police should be okay with that.

Or we can talk about it in the comments... and writers don't have to waste time making an article on what may or may not happen and can instead save time and resources to write an article when it's confirmed.

Feel free to submit a community article on Lukaku to United then if it bothers you so much 🙂

We can talk Lukaku - we are free to post. But no point writing an article on Lukaku until we know where he is going.

On Darren Fletcher. I think Pulis will play Yacob and Livermore as his defensive midfielders. With Rodriguez, Phillips and Chadli supporting Rondon up front. WBA need to find some defenders though as McAuley and Brunt are old and Evans is injury prone.

Firstly we're not a news site and don't really deal in transfers until confirmed.

Secondly the analysis of the move will be made when the move is complete. Why cannibalise that now and risk repeating the same information?

Nice article guys! I agree with him looking good but Mounie and Kachunga and other examples sitting around might obscure Incey. But he loves to make the difference, more so than the kind of goals scored by Kachunga and Mounie, so I'm favouring him

Good fixtures too, very kind and gives them a relatively gentle landing in the Prem; not beyond the realms of possiblity I have one of the mids as a punt. No promoted team midfield asset were more than 5.5 last year (fun fact: forgotten man Viktor Fischer was Boros!) so I'd wonder if they'll stick to that. Knockaert as well maybe a candidate for 6.0 if they do breach that for a promoted team.

Think it is a bad move for Iheanacho. He should go to a club where he will be first choice. Are Leicester going to play him in his preferred position as the furthest man forward when Vardy is still around?

I think he will get good amount of minutes, but I don't know how they will line up. 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 with Vardy as one of the wingers?

I can see 4-4-2. But Iheanacho is more of a poacher striker as opposed to a link man. Vardy in a similar mould.

Mooy at 7.5m - Should do well in the tackling and passing bonus.
Ward at 6m - Palace have decent first 3 fixtures.
Lacazette at 11.8m - relative to other big strikers.
Salah at 9.4m - He could be a bargain at this price relative to other liverpool mids.

I've done some research on Anthony Knockaert 2016/17 and his stats remind me of Matt Ritchie in Bournemouths 2014/15 promotion season.

Ritchie was 25 in that season, the same age as Knockaert now and played only 62 minutes less than the Brighton man. Both scored an impressive 15 goals, Ritchie won on the assists front with 17 compared to Knockaerts 8.

The following season in the premier league Ritchie registered 4 goals and 6 assists for Bournemouth.

    Why more teams should counter-attack:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtdkzOwYRPk (3:57)

Hopefully the expected goals model that this site uses, takes into account whether a shot is made on the counter attack. They have much higher conversion rates.

The number of shots is quite low for counter attacks and there's a good chance the xG is pretty high as it's an open shot most of the time.

        I like 10 and 11 over 1 and 20

Strategy comes into play. The pool of rreally quality strikers is small and they will go off the board first. If you have pick 10 and Eleven all the best strikers will be gone, but the best mids will remain so you better buying them and going for formation that does not need top strikers

Depends on the spread of high scoring players. There could be a huge dip in pts after the 2nd pick, then less of a difference moving forward.

There is a large degree of luck in drafts imo.

Just 6 players scored 200+ points last year...only 2 of those players were forwards. It will be a big drop off after the first few rounds.

It all depends on your draft strategy. Coming from a fantasy (NFL) football background of 36 years, I always preferred the middle (usually a 10-team league). I wouldn't hesitate drafting the top rated player if I were #1 selection in the overall draft...then wait and wait for my second round pick. The last pick is also a good slot, as you end up with the wrap around, last pick in the first, first pick in the second round. No matter how you look at it, even in a 10-team league the FPL draft game is going to be challenging to put forth a strong staring XI. It will be the top 3-4 players carrying your squad I feel.

It's pre season. Players get fat not everyone has Christiano Ronaldo's insane workfare some like to take time off and put on the pounds just means they'll need to work extra

Wouldnt mind that much on Ronnie as I know his workrate, he could get that taken care in a week (not that he would ever let that happen to him). My man Miki has problems running for 60 mins straight, not that he wouldnt have problems losing this. He also expects more gametime from Mou, yet doesnt work for it. Half of Madrids team last year was cutting short their vacation to impress Zizou and fight for their place in the team. Cant ever see that from Henrikh.

Darlow 5.9m - If newcastle don't sign another keeper and with good opening fixtures
Bong £5.5 - If brighton don't sign another lb, good fixtures
Stephens £6.5 - If he starts, good opening fixtures

Who will play LB for Utd is a big grey area.
Let's monitor who mourinho decides to play there during pre-season.
Blind could be a bargain at 7.9m if is a sure starter.

Will be free competition for fantasyleague.com/pro, which is still the best version but costs £34 each. You can still run it as an auction with budgets when you gather in the pub, the prices won't go into the game, you just store them in your spreadsheet. Then you have a budget for transfers (max of 3 at the end of each month works) and you submit them to an email address that you set up, it is blind bids against each other. Enjoy.

Do you think whether Lukaku being at Man utd or Everton when the game opens will make a difference to his price?-

I think he may be priced 0.5m more at Utd due to very kind opening fixtures.

You reckon they base prices on opening fixtures?

Yeah I would of thought difficulty of opening fixtures may be taken into account.Maybe not.

I wouldn't have thought so as it's a full season, but I guess it could be what happens. Would sort of make sense.

I disagree. Would swing prices unfairly. I do however think they take the team the person plays for into account. Hence, I believe Lukaku would be about 10.5 at Everton, while 11.0-11.5 at Chelsea/United.

Why the hell would opening fixtures effect pricing? Every team has to play each other twice it kinda balances itself out init.

I don't think actually do it, but I can see why they might. But my reasoning is possibly opposite to the Kangaroo. They could price someone like him lower than normal who has good fixtures because they know his price will rocket early on. Things will balance out a bit more later on, and there won't be as many transfers towards the later part of the season.

I could see him priced at 11.5 at Man Utd/Chelsea, but I think he will priced at 11.0 at most at Everton.

      It should not in theory.

The player prices are probably pretty much settled on now by fpl. It would be interesting to know if they revise his price and the reasons behind it on the back of the transfer but we will never really know will we?

It should be expected that he'd score more at ManU or Chelsea than at Everton, so yes.

Is there any chance United have bid £75m to force Chelsea to pay more for Lukaku?

Surely Mourinho wouldn't do that ... would he?

        Its a bit like Ebay

You put in an pre-emptive high bid on the basis that either you will win or, if not, someone else will have to pay more than they expected/intended

It's possible that they are leaning to Lukaku to get Madrid to stop playing funny buggers over Morata.. if we pull out of a deal for Morata they won't get near the fee we supposedly offered from anybody else.. nor will they ask for such a fee from anybody but us probably.. arseholes they are..

It's all a bit of a head wrecker this transfer window i dunno what's going on tbh

You dont play Russian roulette with £75m

A move for Lukaku makes a lot of since and United are not messing around here.

The £25m is a lot of money today if you adjust it for inflation.

Real Madrid have screwed us over since the beginning of time.

£25m for Beckham at the time was a complete joke. We should have haggled a lot harder. Was worth double that.

If Lukaku joins United, i just can't see any way that he doesn't score at least 20 PL goals.

    Please finalise the deal Ed.
