Scout Report – Tom Ince

Huddersfield Town’s busy summer of recruitment continued on Tuesday with the signing of Derby County midfielder Tom Ince for an undisclosed fee, believed to be worth up to around £10 million.

The 25-year-old winger agreed a three-year deal with the Terriers, with the option of extending his contract for a further season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Huddersfield head coach David Wagner revealed what qualities he expects the former England U21 international will bring to his side:

“Everybody in England knows that Tom has high quality; he has been one of the best players in the Sky Bet Championship for many years now. He scores goals, creates them for others and is always a threat when he’s on the pitch… He has had a taste of the division for two short spells and he is desperate to show everyone that he belongs in the top division. I think he can be a big player for us.”

The History

Ince joined Liverpool’s academy in 2008 at the age of 16, and made his professional debut as a substitute in a League Cup tie against Northampton Town in September 2010.

He was then sent out on loan to League One side Notts County, where he scored twice in six matches, before joining Championship outfit Blackpool in August 2011 after declining a contract offer to remain at Liverpool.

The midfielder enjoyed a solid first season, registering six goals and seven assists in 33 league appearances, while he also scored in the 2-1 defeat to West Ham United in the Championship play-off final.

He then took his game to another level the following year, producing 18 goals and 14 assists in 44 matches. That prompted interest from both Premier League clubs and European giants such as Monaco and Inter Milan, but he ended up joining Crystal Palace on loan.

Ince totalled one goal and one assist in eight appearances for the Eagles before joining Hull City ahead of the 2014/15 season.

He failed to settle on Humberside and, following a loan spell at Nottingham Forest, it was another loan move, this time to Derby County, that saw Ince return to form.

The midfielder scored 11 goals in 18 appearances, convincing the Rams to sign Ince for £4.75 million in July 2015. And he has continued to put up impressive numbers over the last two seasons, tallying 26 goals and 15 assists in 90 matches.

Ince played six times for England U17s and U19s, and made 19 appearances for the U21s, producing three goals and seven assists.

The Prospects

Given the significant outlay made by the Terriers on Ince, it’s expected that the midfielder will command a regular starting spot in Wagner’s starting XI.

Last season, Ince made 47 of his 50 appearances in all competitions on the right wing, but he is equally capable of operating either on the opposite flank or even in a No 10 role.

His main qualities include his shooting, crossing, dribbling and ability to pick a pass, all of which should make him an intriguing Fantasy prospect.

Last term, it was Elias Kachunga (right) and Rajiv van La Parra (left) who were the favoured options out wide for Huddersfield, with Chelsea loanees Kasey Palmer and Izzy Brown sharing playing time in the central support role in the 4-2-3-1 formation.

The Terriers announced on Tuesday that Palmer will return to the club on a second season-long loan, so he looks to be a strong contender to start in the No 10 position.

Kachunga was Huddersfield’s top scorer last season with 12 goals, so he appears more likely to find a place in the side ahead of van La Parra, although the DR Congo international hasn’t played a lot of football on the left flank.

Given the number of additions made by Wagner already this summer, it’s clearly going to be crucial to analyse the Terriers during pre-season to assess what the likely starting XI will be.

Looking at Ince’s underlying statistics from last season, he impressively averaged a shot every 27.97 minutes, slightly superior to Palmer (30.83), and significantly better than both van La Parra (43.21) and Kachunga (52.27).

Indeed, only Fulham’s Sone Aluko managed more shots (134) than the 129 Ince produced in the Championship.

While around half of Ince’s goal attempts came from outside the box, he still averaged a shot from inside the penalty area every 55.51 minutes, again superior to Kachunga (64.68), Palmer (80.94) and van La Parra (84.21).

The former England U21 international also shone as a creator, averaging a key pass every 51.54 minutes, which while slightly inferior to Palmer (47.96), was better than both Kachunga (68.14) and van La Parra (164.20).

The data certainly indicates that Ince may well be the primary option among Huddersfield’s attacking midfielders, although Palmer also looks one to monitor should he be priced favourably.

Given his production, albeit in the Championship, Ince is likely to warrant a starting price of between 5.5 and 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

With the Terriers not facing any of last season’s top seven over the opening six Gameweeks (cpl, NEW, SOT, whm, LEI, brn), members of Wagner’s side could well emerge as popular budget options.

But with latest club-record signing Steve Mounie, along with fellow forward Laurent Depoitre and set-piece ace Aaron Mooy to also consider, choosing the right target may prove difficult.

Fantasy managers will hope pre-season will provide all important clues, with Ince likely to be at the forefront of our thinking – particularly if he can wrestle some set-piece duties from Mooy.

The 25-year-old has previously failed to grasp his opportunities in the top flight, but having gained more first-team experience, he should now be ready to make an impact at this level.

Ince certainly looks to have the potential to flourish as an FPL asset, and a strong pre-season could see him emerge as a popular budget option given Huddersfield’s favourable opening schedule.

So maybe an interesting thing to try:

Which teams would you say have had a successful transfer season so far?

And which teams have a rumour that looks likely to push them towards a good summer?

      Everton the best by far.

      Arsenal second.

      Gotta be Arsenal so far!

Kolasinac looks quality, Lacazette is a great opportunity for them to finally get a 20+ goal scorer, and it looks like they may have kept hold of Sanchez!

Last season for GW1, I was the only person on here to employ a strategy I call "Superior Firepower".

It's essentially 3 premium centre forwards - sometimes the most expensive 3.

My defence cost just £22m to enable this.

If Lukaku joins United, will the masses employ my superior firepower strategy? For example Kane - Lukaku - Jesus

We seem spoilt for choice in the premium centre forwards slot ... Why ration yourself to just 2 of them?

Just drafted this up to see if I could fit in Kane Lukaku Sanchez

      Foster 4.5 Myhill 4
      Bailly 5.5 Cedric 5 Evans 4.5 Francis 4.5 4m
      Sanchez 12 Zaha 6.5 Stanislas 6.5 Redmond 6.5 4.5
      Kane 13 Lukaku 11.5 Gabbiadini 6.5

Getting Jesus too may be going one step too far

    2007/08 - July 6 - 36 days before start of season

    2006/07 - July 9 - 41 days before start of season

Reasons why FPL will likely launch on July 11 :

    First - http://www.101greatgoals.com/news/fantasy-premier-league-confirm-new-feature-20172018/

This article was published on June 12 and the screenshot in the article shows that the Premier League was updated on June 11 saying 'Preparations for new feature' and 'Initial onboarding improvements for next season' so there is a good chance that FPL will launch exactly after a month since that 'update'.

    Second -

Mark : I don't believe it will Monday or the Friday for obvious reasons

Indeed as far as I know (from 2006) FPL has never launched on a Saturday. Since 2006 FPL has never launched on a Sunday. Since 2008 FPL has never launched on a Friday. Since 2010 FPL has never launched on a Monday. Last year FPL launched on Tuesday.

Not for me. I think we will have a lot of forward options this year with:

Lukaku, Kane, Jesus, Aguero, Lacazette, Defoe to mention a few.

It surprises me that Aguero is not being spoken about. What is to say that Aguero won't be the central striker and Jesus plays off the right and Sane off the left? Aguero would be a good option then.

Yeah. I think Aguero will play a lot of games and will be priced more fairly in FPL this season making him an option. He got 20 goals in 31 PL appearances last season which is very good. I think Aguero may be rotated for CL games because he can be more injury prone though. A lot depends on Sanchez - if he does move would prefer him to go to Bayern.

Defoe third mid if he's priced suitably, mind you 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 could be popular with 3 budget defs and mids for rotation

I think Swansea are a team that will start the season quite well. Clement had them playing well at the end of last season.

Not many will look to their assets early on, but I view Southampton away as a very nice fixture for a clean sheet and 2 goals.

I have said before have a look at the PL table as if the league started in Feb 2017. You can get an idea of who showed an uptick in form which can be taken into the new season. A couple of caveats:

      1) New manager effect (e.g. Palace, Watford and Southampton)
      2) Pulis effect (gives up after hitting 40 points)

Olsson and Mawson look good options if they're 4.5 and 5.0 respectively as would appear likely. A lot of good home fixtures all the way to December.

I don't see Llorente leaving. He's also dealing with a broken arm, so doubt anyone would come in for him at the moment.

Thought in May there was a very good chance Siggy would leave, but if Rooney goes to Everton starting to get more confident he'll stay. Still a decent chance he'll go though.

I have played fantasyleague.com/pro for ten years. About 12-14 is best. When we had 16, there were not enough starters to fill your squad. When we had single figures, you were able to pick up decent players at the end on free transfers (note that this version has a budget), which is a bit lame.

A degree of scarcity helps the game be better. If you can all get good teams, which you can with six, it isn't so good. Try organising it with budgets rather than going round picking people. If you do only manage that, then first in round 1 goes last in round 2 and so on.

For those who may be interested and are not aware - myself and Individual have produced a podcast for WGTA this week where we discuss all the teams and the opening fixtures, analysing which teams may be best to invest into at the start of the season and reviewing who we think the best assets are for each of the teams.

Link to the pod can be found here:

    http://whogottheassist.com/posts/767

We will be doing another one next week as well to tie in with the site launch where we reviewing the prices of the players, hunt for bargains and discuss initial drafts 🙂

Interestingly Jamie Jackson a month ago said he thought Griezmann and Lukaku would be two top targets. He described Mourinho as "obsessed with Lukaku"

Griezmann was undoubtedly his main target and would be a United player if the Madrid transfer ban hadn't been upheld and it would appear that Morata was the next choice but United were just not willing to pay £70 million for a player who has spent quite a lot of time on the bench for the last 3 seasons

? How do we know he didn't rate him?....He was young and ambitious (still is) and he can be hard for a manager to keep a young player if he isn't going to play him and he wants to move on. Just because he wasn't first choice and was destined to be bench fodder or back on loan for a while doesn't mean that Mourinho actually didn't rate him.

Some managers just want the finished proven article and not risk up and coming players...

At the same time young players need to know their role and accept what their managers are telling them.. Lukaku was incapable of this.. he has a big head but to be fair to him he proved at Everton he is more than capable of knocking in goals for fun at PL level.. can he make the step up and do it under a much bigger spotlight and at CL level.. i'm sure he has no doubt in himself and if the rumours are to be believed Jose thinks so too now

I also think less of a fantasy prospect because of CL and some real competition for his place from Rashford and Martial.
I also dont expect him to repeat his exploits of last season in his first season at United.

If the adjudicators at fpl have any since they should revise Lukaku's price down if anything.

Yep, as with anything, popularity regresses things to an unfortunate mean. That said, I still enjoy the insight and banter. It just takes longer to sort through the drivel to find the worthwhile nuggets.

Met a guy in Aldi tonight buying his second bottle of vino of the night. He waved cheerfully at me as he got into his car and drove off. Yikes.

Bit harsh. I'm an avid lurker and have my opinions on post quality, I just keep it to myself. I have enjoyed much of it recently in the quiet times.
It's a bit arrogant though to say that just because posts are no longer just by the regulars, things have become drivel.
You guys are the regulars and maybe some of the most interesting posters but that doesn't make you guardians. It's a public forum. Unless it's offensive, let people post.

Genuinely excited about the prospect of Lukaku at Old Trafford.

He's shown he can score goals in the Premier League and is still a young age.

Feels like we haven't had a striker who will stick around long term and do the business in forever

Cue Chelsea swooping in and beating us to the signing

I can't remember when there was last so many of the top 6 with striker spots up for grabs.

Arsenal - finally replaced RVP with Lacazette
      Man Utd
      Chelsea if Costa leaves
      Everton

Arguably, Liverpool unless they continue with a false 9

Last season had such a dearth of striker options. This season is shaping up nicely!

I hope they price Kane high enough that he's not at 40% ownership for GW1. Would really get people taking a few risks with the latest transfers.

Lukaku at United will be a must for me. I really like Lacazette at Arsenal too.

Already feels like it will be similar to last year - "can't have everyone"

Never known a season like it was last year.

Last season might look be a piece of cake if FPL price Lukaku, Lacazette, Jesus in the Kane/Aguero category, plus Alli, Eriksen, Coutinho, Mané around the 10m mark. It would be hell!

It excites me too but not going to get my hopes up about anything right now.. i would happily toss a coin between him and Morata tbh.. while Morata is a level above from a technical point of view hold up and link up play for example and has succeeded at elite clubs and at CL level.. it's undeniable that Lukaku in full flight has the much higher ceiling imo.. literally unplayable at times with that pace and power.. i mean if he could work on that first touch you're talking world beater material

Any merit in the idea of having a fully strong first 11, with 4 utter fodders on the bench (4.0, 4.0, 4.0, 4.5), in a 3-4-3, if you plan to wildcard early? Is this a stupid plan that's destined for disaster?

4.0 defender is always am ok idea if you're desperate for the extra 0.5. Just make sure you pick an absolute nobody to make sure you don't lose 0.1. Then just jump swap him onto the first 4.0 defender that becomes available.

A 4.5 keeper with a back up 4.0 keeper from the same team is a well worn route.

Possibly, although there may be a bit more to it than that.

Obviously it's hard to tell how much of what Journo's say is true but a few have said the £75m for Lukaku is a bit lower than they wanted because Rooney will go the other way (but not in the same deal)

For Morata a few of them have said Real Madrid were holding out for such a high figure because they believed United had no other options. Although to be fair same could be said of Chelsea in a few weeks.
