Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Champions League – Wednesday

The big-name strikers keep on scoring, but it is two midfielders who impress the most in wins for both Man United and Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho puts the frighteners on Phil Jones owners ahead of a visit from Crystal Palace.

Here are the notes from an impressive night for the English clubs in Champions League action.

No danger Hazard’s not ready

Chelsea coach Antonio Conte has been sparing in his use of Eden Hazard as the midfielder recovers from injury.

But he now looks on course to make his first league start of the season in Saturday evening’s huge clash with Man City.

The Belgian was back to his best in Chelsea’s superb 2-1 win at Atletico Madrid, capping a fine individual performance with the assist for Alvaro Morata’s second-half equaliser.

The 10.5-priced playmaker is in just 2.9% of Fantasy Premier League teams and that figure might not increase massively with the in-form City up next.

But he’s a differential in the making for those brave enough to risk him and the Blues’ schedule then improves dramatically after this weekend.

Once the October international break is done, Chelsea begin a very attractive 11-match run that involves only two fixtures – United at home, Liverpool away – to truly test the champions.

Hazard looks poised to take full advantage.

Stationed up front alongside Morata as Conte opted for a 3-5-2 formation, his link-up play with the Spaniard was an eye-catching aspect of a great night for the Blues.

Morata had six shots, Hazard four – including one deflected effort that hit the post – and the pair look to be on the cusp of a very fruitful relationship. Hazard created seven scoring chances – more than any player in the Champions League this week.

Former Real Madrid man Morata thrived in a hostile atmosphere. He looked sharp and hungry throughout to make it seven goals in as many matches in all competitions this campaign.

More than 229,000 managers have brought him in this Gameweek, making him the most popular purchase to date, and even Man City’s defence – they’ve kept three straight clean sheets in the league – will struggle to contain him.

However, there could be potential concerns in the Chelsea camp based on this report this morning suggesting that the striker was seen limping in front of press after last night’s tie. The piece admits that no issue was reported during the player’s own interviews, so we can only await news from Antonio Conte on Friday.

Chelsea won Wednesday’s encounter with its last kick when substitute Michy Batshuayi converted Marcos Alonso’s low cross – a much-needed attacking return from the 19.3%-owned wing-back – and the Blues’ control of a match away from home against one of Europe’s very best sides sent a powerful message to both their domestic and continental rivals.

David Luiz, suspended domestically, returned to the back three but gave away the penalty from which Atletico took the lead. Gary Cahill, who didn’t start last weekend’s 4-0 win at Stoke City, also came back into the defence and looked rather more assured.

It will be a major surprise if he does not feature against City, while Hazard, Morata and Cesc Fabregas were all taken off by Conte, presumably with one eye on the weekend.

Pedro (1.5%), who was among the goals at Stoke, was benched and could be another being lined up to start against the Manchester table-toppers.

United keep on winning

Romelu Lukaku scored twice as Man United brushed aside CSKA Moscow 4-1 in the Russian capital.

The Belgian striker now has ten goals in nine appearances in all competitions this season and the trend to sell the 56.2%-owned asset seems to be finally on the turn.

Some 67,000+ managers have bought him this week with a plum home fixture against Crystal Palace just too good to resist.

On this evidence, his 11.7 asking price looks like money well spent, although four forwards – Morata, Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy have been purchased by more this week.

But it was Anthony Martial who impressed the most in Moscow.

The Frenchman has started just once in the league this season and yet he’s still managed 26 points from three goals and an assist.

He was industrious from the get-go last night and scored from the penalty spot, after Henrikh Mkhitaryan had been fouled, as well as providing the assists for all three of United’s goals.

He has now been involved in six goals in his last three matches in all competitions (three goals, three assists).

Mkhitaryan was the other scorer on the night, and his substitution after 60 minutes will have been welcomed by his 33.3% ownership who will be hoping the Armenian continues his own fine from when struggling Palace visit Old Trafford on Saturday.

Martial, however, went off with a knock later on, which could allow Marcus Rashford to return to the teamsheet against the Eagles on Saturday.

Jose Uncertain on Jones

The assumption heading into last night was that the 10.5%-owned Phil Jones, along with the likes of Antonio Valencia, missed out as he was rested.

But, post-match, Mourinho gave a less than heartening update on Jones’ prospects for Saturday.

“I think (Michael) Carrick has no chance, Jones I have many doubts and (Marouane) Fellaini I have a hope, just a hope.”

As the most transferred in (111,000+) defender in the Gameweek, Jones’ absence would be a bitter blow. United face an attack without a recognised striker after Christian Benteke was sidelined for weeks and are heavily backed to claim a sixth clean sheet in seven.

The cynics among us could suggest that, with an international break just around the corner, Mourinho is now looking to buy Jones some more time off.

It’s perhaps no coincidence that, prior to the last international break, we witnessed the same behaviour. The United manager’s attempts to talk up Jones’ ankle problems in late August were to no avail as the defender still went on to play 180 minutes across England’s pair of matches. There’s a feeling that he’s determined to prevent the same situation occurring again.

Should Jones not recover in time for the Palace fixture, it looks like a straight shoot-out between Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling to partner Eric Bailly at the heart of the United defence. That’s unless Mourinho opts to go with the three-man backline utilised in Moscow last night, which perhaps seems unlikely given Palace’s lack of conviction at either end of the pitch.

    It's an outrage!

Are the FFS writers speculating in transfers in/out? ONE newspaper mentions a Morata with a slight limp in the press area. They also mention that it could very well come from post-match stiffness. How many other players from PL has a slight limp after a game? A lot!

Why on earth would this warrant both a mention in the Scout Notes as well as its own twitter broadcast? To me, this looks fishy, with selective choosing of tabloid sources, to create transfer movement in their favour. My guess is that none of these writers have Morata in their sides, and wish people to sell Morata for their own forwards.

Yes, this is a rant, I realize that. And it might be unjustified. So for those of you who can fill me in, how many of the FFS leaders have Morata in their team, and specifically those who wrote these two texts?

Keep calm, and stay a neutral FFS community!

Yes. Why report a case that really is a non-case? As mentioned above - how many players limp after a game without it being mentioned in here? And - how many other "news stories" from tabloids are mentioned here? How do they choose what to report? I call for transparency! ^^

              Cold = disease.

              Limp = stiffness after game.

Also, their cases were mentioned by manager in press conference or in press releases. Not by a single reporter from a tabloid news paper, who thinks he/she saw a limp on a player who walks in the press area. Who knows, Morata might just be doing that gangsta limp?

You have no idea what's caused that limp ...your lack of objectivity is clouding your judgement. I suspect if the roles were reversed you'd be happy to take any advantage... that is how the game is played.

                  Fairness before egocentrism.

I have no idea what caused the limp, but neither do the reporter, or the FFS writers. So why write about it?

Not sure whether it is my objectivity that should be in question, seeing that you already mentioned a comparison with your own players, a comparison that I already gave away is flawed.

If he was flagged I'd agree with you. But reporting from mostly-reputable sites is consistent and one rationale for the site's existence (whether or not it happens to be in our favour should it prove premature. I also own Morata).

It has already been discussed on the FFS site how much power the FFS community has towards influencing FPL. Especially when it comes to flagging of players. And that is just the direct impact on flagging.

Another possibility is the indirect approach, where in this case:

Standard report possible limp from press area.
FFS mentions this in their own article, and on twitter.
Sports journalists on this site pick up injury news from twitter or article, and writes about it themselves. Even disreputable news agencies who make up more information about injury.
FPL sees that many sources mention the same injury, and they flag.

I am not saying that this is how it happens, but it might happen. Which is why I ask for transparancy from the FFS leaders on how they pick-and-choose stories to report.

What would be interesting for me is if you could highlight the comparable news stories written about players that haven't then been given the same treatment by FFS. That would help to justify your argument that there's an 'injustice' here.

That would be a phd thesis, and not the amount of work expected from anyone in here.

I just want the admins to share their parameters for choosing news stories to report. And wouldn't that be an easier way to get the same information? I ain't saying that anyone did wrong in this specific case, regarding Morata. In my opinion it is a story not worth reporting, and therefore I ask for transparancy on this.

I think there is too much FFS community (posters) swagger and disparagement of others this season. Perhaps it's to influence, perhaps not. But it detracts from discussion and getting annoying.

But that's not the same thing as admin reporting on publicly available news.

I am surprised myself, by the amount of suppression techniques used in here.

                      On point:

I DO want admins reporting on publicly available news. I just want them to show us their guidelines, so we know what parameters they choose news from. This way we can choose for ourselves whether we trust the reports or not. Perhaps their parameters aren't optimal atm? Who knows. I just want transparancy on this ^^

First eight comments, and none of them actually help the discussion.

To blatantly kill discussion is discouraging for the community.

I am disappointed, both with those who reply with suppression techniques, as well as with the lack of actually arguments against my cause.

I guess I'll have to research this myself, for now.

I severely doubt it. He is still first in NTI for today. However, Kane and Lukaku are gaining on him - slowly.

However, the more sites where this non-story is mentioned, and his NTI will fall. This will prevent his expected rise friday/saturday.

I do not see why people should sell Morata at all, if not for some rumours of a non-existent injury.

These reports are actually useful. There are too many examples where little niggles have become true , take what statements you find and make your own interpretation .

Don't go calling people trolls when you are over reacting about an imaginary investment in a fantasy sports game on a website where you don't even have a picture.

            1. Stat Sloth

"Have a picture"? I don't understand the meaning of that.

Only two people have been called trolls, hence to their statements of my post related to Brexit or 9/11. They tried to derail the discussion with non-related content and making fun of the writer of the post - therefore they match the definition of troll.

I certainly agree that reports are useful. I use them myself. However, this one did not contain enough solid evidence or reports. The reporter from the Standard said themselves that it was based on an eyesight report and a guesswork.

So what I expect from a community based semi-professional site like the FFS is to share how they choose what to report. I expect them to follow a set of guidelines, and a framework. Without the community aware of these guidelines, it is way too easy for community writers to take advantage and try to influence transfer movement.

nah, United away is the only 'bad' fixture from an attacking perspective - Eriksen is staying. I'm eyeing up another way to get Hazard though

Not sure I can justify getting on for 21million on Hazard and Morata - prefer the latter to get on the end of the former's assists like last night.

Just played free hit. Why not? Got in Kane (C) and Lukaku for Morata and Aguero. Also got in Alli, Bellerin, Daniels and Choupo Moting for Eriksen, Alonso, Hegazi and Mooy respectively.
Smart moves? Also gonna captain Kane over Lukaku based on form and differential captain. Thoughts?

Played mine last week in reverse to you (got Kun and Alonso in) and got 86 points, but because Kane and Kaku did well the benefit was small. I really played it because I was at 2.4 mill and felt I had to do something to get back in the game a bit.

I keep seeing people saying they have played it because they have had a bad start and need to make up points. There is absolutely no logic in this, as you are only going to effectively lose these points again when everyone else plays their chip.

So it's swings and roundabouts then because you will be playing yours at the same time as everyone else around the blank week. I'd rather try and recover while there are so many different options available than when templates start to form and you get less rank swing. Easy to say this if you started OK.

That's like saying a guy was given one lottery ticket and won the jackpot, and someone else was given two lottery tickets and won nothing, therefore next week if someone offers you one lottery ticket or two, it is better to take one.

Yeah but that doesn't make it a good strategy. If I TC Giroud this weekend and he scores a hattrick, its still a poor move.

The best chance of capitalising on it is when there's a blank week or a double week.

2FT's conundrum, still got wildcard, really want Lukaku in, but so far Mkhi, Bailly & Pogba have more or less covered his points. Alli came in for Pogba so I'm not particularly attached to him.

a Hold Jesus, or one week punt that might work out as a hold on Vardy? Then can get Morata in for the fixtures. Maybe selling Firmino.

          Or

b Lukaku in for Jesus, can't see any other way to fund except Alli>Silva? Maintains City cover but not the best week for it.

          Foster
          Davies Bailly Kola
          Brady Mkhi Alli Gross
          Kane(c) Jesus Firmino

I think b makes sense for this week but leaves little flexibility later?!

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Kane versus Lukaku for the GWK 7 captaincy

Many own both, the others probably wished they owned both. But which is the better armband option?

Kane with those sensational away stats, for his trip to Huddersfield?

Or home advantage against hapless Palace for Lukaku?

Does ownership come into it - with Lukaku's effective ownership likely to be more than 100%. Or will Kane simply out power him in terms of goals?

            I'll certainly be captaining Harry.

Kane the better option I feel. Less ownership and just as likely to score big as Lukaku. Having both is great and either way your getting points from both in one way or another. Feeling pretty chilled about captaincy this week

Both look likely to haul, which probably means neither will, as the FPL gods love to remind us of the power to pee us all off! Captaining Laca over Lukaku, cause I'm feeling mad....

Kane just edges it for me.
Personally I feel Spurs are more attacking than United even though United are scoring the 3's and 4's.
Kane on pens and fks too.
Plus his away form and early fixture form.
I might be biased here though towards Kane.
Could go Lukaku on Saturday lol

I have played my Free Hit for this gameweek because i have both Jesus and Ageuro, and they are playing Chelsea. So i have played it to get Lacazette, kane and Lukaku.

I will firmly be putting it on Kane, i can Lukaku coming off early if the job is done.

Kane looks less dependent on his team mates and is a better player. Combine a great away record with a fixture vs a freshly promoted side and the captain pick is clear for me. Granted Huddersfield have a good defensive record but Spurs might just break them with their quality.

Lacazette is just as viable an option as Kane and Lukaku. For me, its 1) Lukaku, 2) Lacazette, 3) Kane. All of them great options though.

Kane. 4 goals in PL. 1 supposed to be cross, (first goal against Everton) 2 goals after silly mistakes in WHU midfield. He has been in good form in Europe and in England shirt, still is he really in that good form? HUD defence better than CPL's. atm I do not have Lukaku / Kane. Probably bringin Lukaku in.

It's tricky; Huddersfield have better defensive stats than Palace but then again this is the first time The Terriers have played a top 6 side. I feel Spurs, and Kane in particular, will be much much better than anything they have faced so far.

Palace need to improve, they won't want to repeat their result against City, I'm sure they will get better but maybe not just yet.

Both strikers in devastating form. Kane on pens just edges it for me.

Was leaning towards Kane due to less travel and more rest after CL game. Plus his away stats are a joke frankly people were murdering their mothers to get aguero in after his recent hattie and Kane could have had 4 against West ham if not for the post. I think lukaku will score but I've punted on Rashford before my WC so ill have 2 man u I my front 3 so I think harry probably takes it.

He's the new messiah. He walks on water. The sun shines out of his arse. He's scored 4 prem goals & has zero assists. He's only blanked in 4 out of 6. He loves kittens. He buys his mum chocolates on her birthday. He voted remain.

Both look like great options so I am trying to find reasons not to captain each player:

                Lukaku:
                One less day of rest
Only scored one goal per game so far, less explosive?
                Doesn't have penalties

                Kane:
Huddersfield have only conceded 3 goals so far

                Anything to add?

Kaku depends on crosses a lot and if rashford is playing, his scoring chance went down further, rashford dont pass

For those thinking Kane, remember what happened to those who captained him against another promoted side with reasonable defensive solidity - Middlesbrough.

And yes I did captain him then.

And yes I don't own him right now. Just stirring the pot

A make or break round for Lukaku as steady captain I think. The "easiest" game of the season before they go heavy on the fixture-tickers, if he can't make the haul this time around he might actually be eligeble for shipping out for one of the other top strikers. It's the old slow'n'steady vs. big-haul potential debate all over again.

                Lukaku for captain.

P.S.: Huddersfield are a surprise solid team, don't have that as an "easy" fixture for spurs anyway.

                Lukaku simply for safety.

Any Kane haul will benefit your rank regardless of captaincy.

Any Lukaku haul would need to be doubled to get any real benefit because he'll be so heavily captained in the game.

If Lukaku blanks as as C and Kane hauls, you're still likely to do well.

If Kane blanks as C and Lukaku hauls as C for loads of others, you'll still be losing points to a lot of th3 game.

I was on Lukaku but this is all swaying me towards Kane.
                -On pens
                -On free kicks
                -An extra day's rest
-Against a team at home who therefore can't 'park the bus' imo (which Palace could well attempt to do away from home)
-Lower owned and therefore with a potentially big upside, of course

Lukaku for me. Kane will find it difficult to score, a third consecutive game, a brace+.

Similarly, this is possibly the last time in the next 4 weeks that I will captain Lukaku and I want to make my acquisition worthwhile.

Leaning more towards Kane as the week goes on. Hasn't been to Russia, is in imperious form everywhere except Wembley, and Palace have had an extra week with Roy - it could easily be one of those days for United, especially with Pog and Fellaini both out.

I can certainly see Luka scoring but I think Kane is just as likely, and more likely to get a big haul.

Sometimes you can over-analyse things. For me, it's simple - Lukaku cannot stop scoring and is playing for the team joint-top of the table against the side that's rock bottom. That is pure armband material.

Throw in the fact that his high ownership can damage you and that Palace have no fit striker to hold up the ball and relieve pressure - it points to an easy decision IMO.

If Palace concede early then it could open the flood gates

The Huddersfield manager could work out a way to stop Spurs aka Swansea.

Is Lukaku going to start? Limited minutes? He played the whole CL game, Mourinho could've managed his minutes since they were winning, but he left him on. It's screaming "going to rest him" vs the worst team on the planet on Saturday. Thoughts?

I have both, C Kane but still not finalised between them. Triple C in Kane is too much ? As i see him gain more confident & sharper game by game IMO. And have no idea how the Hudders & CPL playing defends. Tq

              1. Jesus --> Lacazette

              2. Jesus + Mooy --> Rashford + Ramsey / Mahrez / 8.5 mid (-4)

              3. Jesus + Mooy --> Vardy + Ramsey (-4)

              May WC next week.

Ive got Aguero Kane and Vardy, would you say i need to find a way to fit in Morata/Lukaku in place of Vardy? Or is he a reasonable 3rd striker. Tempted to stick with these 3 for the next 4-5 GW's but a bit worried of the potential hauls from Luk and Morata

Keep Vardy. Top heavy 3 means compromises

Also have Silva, salah, Kolasinac and Davies. Might try find a way to go with Haz, would rather no Liverpool cover over no Chelsea cover

Need help with decision, want to go for 3 big-hitters up front, but I am not sure about the timing with Firmino.

              Current team:
              Foster - (Elliot)
Davis - Jones - Cédric (Naughton - Rangel)
Eriksen - David Silva - Willian - (Xhaka - Carroll)
              Lukaku - Aguero - Firmino

              Suggested transfer (4 points):
              Eriksen + Firmino -> Kane +

So a question on Marcos ..

Are there any other managers who have locked him in for the season like me ?? .. Shipping him out after 1 blank is senseless really ..could get a 15 pointer any given day

At risk of being replaced by VVD, should i do:

              a) Yoshida to Cedric
              b) Yoshida to Cresswell
              c) Yoshida to Fernandez
              d) ?

B possibly more consistent. A possibly more explosive. Both good picks. A for me.

              Hello 🙂

              Fabiański (Elliot)
              Walker-Davies-Simpson (Jones-Mbemba)
              Caroll-Eriksen-Ritchie-Gross (Chalobah)
              Kun-Kaku-Kane

I'm after WC. 1FT. In long term:
              A. Leave as it is and go for 2FT after reps
              B. Kun/Chalobah -> Vardy/Ramsey (-4)
              C. Kun/Gross -> Vardy/ smbdy form LIV (Salah, COU, Mane) (-4)
              D. Another option

              Regards 🙂

Possible 4-4-2 WC for GW8, what you think? Few players to monitor this weekend. Also, Cedric could be Jones or Sané could be Silva.

              Elliot
              Azpilicueta • Otamendi • Cedric • Ward
              Coutinho • Hazard • Sané • Loftus-Cheek
              Kane • Lukaku
