The Lacazette injury latest as budget forward Nketiah waits on first-team chance

Arsenal 1-1 Fulham

  • Goals: Eddie Nketiah (£5.3m) | Josh Maja (£5.3m)
  • Assists: Daniel Ceballos (£4.7m) | Mario Lemina (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Ceballos x3 Maja x2 Nketiah x1

A last-minute Eddie Nketiah (£5.3m) goal broke Fulham hearts as Scott Parker’s side let more points – and another clean sheet – slip away.

Recent Fantasy interest in the Cottagers has mostly revolved around their excellent keeper Alphonse Areola (£4.6m), with his 5.0% ownership enduring a third straight clean sheet wipe-out, the last two involving late, late goals.

A Lack Of Lacca

But it was indicative of a generally poor match that the biggest FPL news involved an injury to Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m) who, with 10.5% ownership, was easily the most popular player on display – even more so after attracting 270,000 transfers in ahead of last Friday’s deadline.

The striker had scored four goals in his last four starts, only to limp off in the 70th minute on Sunday, with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta delivering a ‘wait and see’ verdict after the game.

We’ll have the scan on Tuesday, see the extent of the injury and the timeline to it. I don’t know. He felt something in his hamstring, we don’t know the extent of it.

Arteta’s attacking options were already limited by an injury to Martin Odegaard (£5.9m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang‘s (£11.3m) bout of malaria, meaning a second straight league start for Gabriel Martinelli (£4.9m).

The manager spoke about the need to rotate following Thursday’s Europa League tie and he was true to his word, with his most surprising move replacing the 7.3%-owned Bernd Leno (£5.0m) with Mat Ryan (£4.1m) because the latter ‘trains like a beast’.

All that training led to zero saves and no clean sheet either for the Australian, and it is the Lacazette development that could hurt the most Fantasy managers.

Then again, more Europa League-based rotation and upcoming games against Everton and Chelsea aren’t exactly boosting the appeal of the Gunners’ assets anyway.

Fast Eddie

At least the Frenchman’s replacement, Nketiah, thrived to earn the praise of his manager.

He always offers his best. Today he scored a goal, he had another two important chances and he’s always a threat in front of goal.

Fulham’s one and only shot on target came from Josh Maja‘s (£5.3m) penalty. Parker’s side have now scored just four goals in their last eight matches and haven’t managed more than one in a fixture since Gameweek 24.

The problem for Fantasy managers is that the Cottagers’ previous defensive resilience is an equally distant memory – having kept five clean sheets in seven matches up to Gameweek 27, they’ve not managed a single one since.

Parker might not have given up the ghost just yet:

No chance, absolutely no chance have we lost hope. Why would there not be belief? Of course, we are disappointed, I’m gutted, the last two weeks have been a real kick in terms of that.

We wake up tomorrow morning, put the gloves back on and go again, keep fighting, and try and pick up points.

But a Blank Gameweek 33 is followed by trips to Chelsea and Manchester United over the final five fixtures, suggesting Fantasy managers are unlikely to be moved by Parker’s fighting talk.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Ryan; Bellerin (Pepe 68), Holding, Gabriel, Xhaka; Elneny (Partey 68), Ceballos; Saka, Smith Rowe, Martinelli; Lacazette (Nketiah 70).

Fulham XI (4-4-2): Areola; Aina, Andersen, Adarabioyo, Robinson; Cavaleiro (Bryan 84), Zambo Anguissa, Lemina, Lookman (Reed 69); Maja (Loftus-Cheek 77), De Cordova-Reid.

The FA allowed the Glazers to buy UTD on debt, they are the ones who have brought all the clubs together to make this happen. Ruthless businessmen who have been slowly draining MUFC of money. Uniteds revenues have been falling and sadly this is their answer, a new league. Anything they're involved in is very bad for football.

All 12 clubs have been excluded from all domestic and European football for the 2021/22 season.

And FIFA and UEFA will sue all 12 clubs and all players will be banned from international football as well.

IF this is true it is very appropriate and I hope they follow through and make sure these clubs are genuinely punished for their greed and blatant disregard for the integrity of the sport.

UEFA are just as culpable for this. I kept saying for years that the UCL needed to be restructured to keep the bigger teams happy. You couldn't have Arsenal, Milan, Inter etc. in europa every year while shakhtar donetsk get a free pass

But instead they add a freaking conference league (for extra money), give more spots to the likes of lokomotiv moscow, rennes, midtjyland etc. (to scoop up as much money from other countries) and just been downright corrupt.

Why should you want to keep the "big" Teams happy? If a big team performs badly in the league why should they get a free pass into the CL because they are rich?

      1. diabydoesgallas
        • 10 Years

Exactly. A large part of the interest each year comes from seeing who can qualify for Europe the following year (ie West Ham this year, etc). This is an awful idea all round. Surely it’s not gonna fly.

It's similar to saying get rid of small countries from Asia and Africa from the next world cup so more European nations with better teams don't miss out.

Why not? If Milan are too rubbish to qualify that's their problem. That's the whole point of competitive sport and exactly the reason everyone is disgusted with tonight's events.

I am not close to this but there must be something the governing bodies are not getting right for these clubs to do what they are doing. Have seen this happen in cricket and rugby league where breakaway comps have been created.

Also not sure how players/clubs can be banned playing a different comp while fulfilling obligations in the domestic comps?

This post is absurd and UEFA have created this monster.

While I agree that the the breakaway teams have no morals, UEFA had it coming. Why can’t the champions of their leagues get into the CHAMPIONS league? Why should England get 4 spots? Been corrupt for a long time and set up nicely for the so called top richest leagues in Europe.

Big Wenger predicting this would happen. Kinda proud that I backed him all the way until the very last day.

Arsene Wenger was a Messiah. He's the reason Arsenal even have a claim to be in this super league. And his entire legacy that he worked so hard to build just been spat on by these scumbags. No wonder they got rid of him just before this rubbish cos he would've never stood for this

Exactly, this is completely anti PL. PL has been redistributing funds more evenly than Spanish and Italian leagues, and that's why the "big clubs" there have "eaten themselves". I can imagine playing most league games is not attractive to global audiences, but that's the problem they've created themselves, not distributing money down the league, and helping the rest of the league develop and attract talent. If I am an owner of PL club I would try to have every advantage I can to win as many European trophies, not help my European rivals to get out of trouble they've created joining them in so called super league. But not many PL owners seem to think that way.

Kick the six out straight away. Award the FA Cup to Leicester, the League Cup to Brentford and the league to Leicester or West Ham, whoever finishes higher.

Give the Champions League to PSG and play the Europa Final between Villarreal and Roma.

From a global context who wants to watch those teams? The fan base is global now. Where is the money going to come from for the clubs not in the new comp?

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus have only themselves to blame that their league games are not attractive to global audiences. I believe the West Ham Newcastle game was globally attractive game, and that's because PL has made the system that benefits all, not just the top two or three teams.

Don't disagree. But if the new comp can attract all the best players I would expect the global audience to watch that.

Yes, but it benefits to other European clubs more, than to PL clubs. Of course, the money was too good for them to decline.

From fans going to games. Sponsors, merchandise, media deals.

Can't see many genuine supporters trekking across Europe to watch games with no relegation or promotion from a lower league, no local bragging rights in the depths of a world recession.

      This should actually be done.

The only response has to be a extreme one and these owners have to be dealt with harshly, and if they want to rejoin the domestic league they will have to start at the bottom and work their way through the leagues.

It's just the logical conclusion of capitalism - concentration of wealth and power in fewer and fewer business firms. Karl Marx was right on that one.

You're thinking of Richard Marx? He was fairly psychic. Wrote a song about Hazard before he was heard of, had COVID hair long before it was cool...

Rightly so. In fact Man Utd should be considered as defunct in 2020. Because to associate this glazer run mafia operation with the great Man Utd that Sir Alex Ferguson devoted his entire life to would be blasphemy. Absolute disgrace
