Rio Fit To Oust Evans
Rio Ferdinand has been declared fit after completing a 45-minute run-out in Man United’s reserves last night. Ferdinand, who had been ruled out of England’s World Cup campaign with knee ligament damage – the latest in a line of recent niggles – proved his fitness in the 2-1 win over Oldham.
Reserve team boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave us more details on Rio’s road to recovery…
“It is a while since he has played but he was still calm…He has got through an important 45 minutes, straight after two very hard training sessions yesterday and the day before so we are delighted with him.”
The one time “fox in the box” striker gave us no doubt that Ferdinand was now available to Alex Ferguson for first team selection…

Three gameweeks in and still Wenger’s teamsheet dominates our Saturday morning thinking. The form of Gareth Bale, Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba has been great and all but it’s starting to create template Fantasy lineups.
We need some differentials; we need Wayne Rooney, Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and the Arsenal pairing of Cesc Fabregas and Robin Van Persie to offer us some form and shake things up. The Gunners pair are not going to give us options from the bench though and once again, with just a few hours to go before Arsenal kick-off at Ewood Park, we wonder whether we’re going to get run the rule of the mercurial pair from the first whistle.
Let’s take a wander with the Saturday morning rags and find out…

Gameweek two is here and the team news is pouring in. The major headline is that Cesc Fabregas remains straining at the leash on the bench, along with Robin Van Persie as Wenger continues to rest the World Cup pairing. Blackpool are spared their brilliance for now at least then. That will come as a major disappointment to all those who backed the pair with the Fantasy Premier League armband today.
Elsewhere, Jon Walters makes his debut for Stoke with Kenwyne Jones ruled out. Jeans, Palacios and Kaboul all come in for the visitors as they look to steer through an injury crisis. Birmingham start with Zigic up front with O’Connor making way. At Goodison meanwhile, David Moyes springs a surprise, relegating Louis Saha to the bench and handing a Premier League debut to Jermaine Beckford. Both Osman and Fellaini drop out with Bilyaletdinov and Heitinga coming into the midfield. Hibbert starts for the injured Neville at right-back. Mick McCarthty is without Fletcher and Van Damme who both miss out for Wolves with injuries, so Elokobi and Doyle return.
At Upton Park Avram Grant rings the changes with Gabbidon, Barrera, Dyer (remember him?) and Piquionne all earning starts with Reid, Kovac, Boa Morte and Tomkins dropping to the bench. Finally at the Hawthorns new signing Peter Odemwingie is thrown straight in for his debut against Sunderland; Olsson also replaces Ibanez at centre-back.
Today’s Dugout Discussion is now open to suck up all your Fantasy Football emotions in real-time.

So Petr Cech is out for a month before a competitive ball has been kicked. The setback is typical of a player haunted by a constant battle with his body which appears to break down with alarming regularity but also sums up the lack of security that Fantasy Managers can find amongst Carlo Ancelotti’s celebrated back five.
That Chelsea defence was second only to United’s in terms of clean sheets last term and will likely be vying with them and perhaps Liverpool, for the same accolade in the coming season. Capitalising on this from a Fantasy perspective is far from easy however given that there are injury or rotation concerns over every leading candidate available…

Powder-puff tackles, second-half elevens, the usual array of “the boys are edging back to fitness” comments when things go awry – pre-season friendlies are often predictable affairs. They are however, useful as a blueprint for a Premier League manager’s thinking before the real business starts in mid August.
Many of our potential signings have already been in action and a number of notable performances have cropped up. Martin Petrov put in a a full shift for Bolton in their 3-0 win over Charlotte Eagles and capped it with an assist and goal. Jack Rodwell notched in Everton’s 2-0 win over Melbourne Heart – a game in which young full-back Seamus Coleman also caught the eye with an assist. As for Blackburn Rovers, they may have played out a stalemate with Austrian side Strum Graz but Big Sam’s 3-5-2 formation offered a glimpse at his tactical thinking for the season ahead. Three centre-backs and the Fantasy fancied Martin Olsson at wing-back? It looks a possibility already…

Antonio Valencia misses out again for United as they wait on Stoke’s arrival at Old Trafford. A jubilant Harry Redknapp has concerns over Heurelho Gomes’ fitness and is set to rest Ledley King for the Turf Moor trip. Matt Jarvis returns to the Wolves squad with Mick McCarthy set to keep changes at a minimum again. Sam Allardyce hints at more changes with an opportunity for Amine Linganzi (me neither) on the cards…

While all the focus is on tonight’s Champions League play-off at Eastlands, we shouldn’t forget that our double gameweek is completed by Fulham’s tussle with Stoke at the Cottage this evening.
It’s widely expected that we’ll see another second string selection from Roy Hodgson tonight, with Bobby Zamora again sidelined as he battles for fitness ahead of the Europa League final. That could well hand Clint Dempsey the chance to lead the attack once again, unless Hodgson opts to throw in David Elm or Stefano Okaka against the Stoke back four. The other poser is whether Zoltan Gera will play some part after being kept in reserve on the bench in the 3-2 win over West Ham at the weekend. I expect him to see some pitch time from him tonight.
The rest of the Fulham lineup looks set to be very similar with Jonathan Greeening, Kagisho Dikgacoi and Bjorn Helge Riise poised to see action once more. Simon Davies could be rested here with Dempsey possibly shifting to the right side of midfield. At the back, we can only speculate as to whether we will see either Aaron Hughes or Brede Hangeland. I suspect Hughes is the more likely to figure with Hangeland continuing speaking out earlier in the season on the strains of so many games this term.
As for Stoke, they seem set to be largely unchanged. Abdoulaye Faye remains a doubt with a thigh injury and seems unlikely to break back into the side regardless after a strong showing from the Stoke rearguard in his absence. Expect Ryan Shawcross to start again tonight then. A change could be on the cards up front with Tuncay an option, but Tony Pulis would seem likely to stick with the Ricardo Fuller/Mama Sidibe partnership.

As yet, there’s still no definitive news on the fitness of Heurelho Gomes going into tonight’s crunchiest of games with Man City. Harry Redknapp confirmed yesterday that Gomes had not returned to training following the groin injury suffered in Saturday’s win over Bolton and indicated that he would leave things to the last minute before assessing his keeper’s availability..
“He didn’t train yesterday (Monday) and he won’t do too much today…We hope he’s fit because he’s important to us. I’m hopeful.”
An insight into the Gomes may come later today, although Redknapp may decide to keep his cards cuddled up to his chest. It’s a similar situation with Ledley King who is also set to be assessed prior to kick-off. King’s long-running knee problems continue to make it difficult for the defender to take part in midweek matches having turned out at the weekend but again, Redknapp seems hopeful…
“I’ll leave it to Ledley. If he feels he’s fit and he’s up for playing, he’ll tell me. If he’s not quite right, he’ll tell me. He knows his body and how his knee is feeling and he will let me know.”
The Spurs boss will likely turn to Sebastien Bassong should King fail to make it, or possibly shift Younes Kaboul to a central role and switch Benoit Assou-Ekotto to right-back. Either way Gareth Bale owners will be waiting anxiously to see if their man lines up on the left of midfield tonight.
It was confirmed yesterday that Verdran Coluka was once again sidelined with his ankle injury and personally, I can see Redknapp starting with the more mobile Assou-Ekotto against the threat of Craig Bellamy, while he’ll also be tempted to recall Wilson Palacios to a midfield role in order to strengthen things in the middle of the park. That would likely see Luka Modric switch to the left in Bale’s position.

Afternoon all. With so many transfers-in for Double Gameweek players this week, the penultimate Premier League weekend of the season has been a bit of a disappointment if you didn’t have the likes of Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor and Adam Johnson.

Alex Ferguson has announced that Wayne Rooney will return to training today and could be available for the trip to Sunderland this weekend.
The United boss revealed that Rooney has made a recovery from the groin injury sustained in training last Thursday and is set to join a session today in preparation for Sunday’s game.
“We expect Wayne to join us in training and possibly Rio Ferdinand as well…We will see how they do but we have a couple of days. Wayne missed last week’s game against Tottenham to allow the ankle to settle. We don’t have any issues with that now. But groin injuries can be a problem at this time of year when the ground is hard. Hopefully he is okay.”
The news comes off the back of earlier reports stating that the United medical staff had given Rooney an “outside chance” of being available. It will serve as a major revelation to Fantasy Managers, many of whom will have either sold on or contemplated selling Rooney for the season climax…
