The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 24

Cursed with a reputation of failing to deliver to form and fixture, while some have tried to dispel the myth, Romelu Lukaku chose today to slay it once and for all.

The stage was dressed and set for the Belgian.

With the fixture list driving his recruitment, there was a degree of forced faith in Lukaku.

Two blanks on the road had created an air of caution, but Everton’s home form was strong enough to offer real hope.

Bournemouth, as today’s visitors, were offering the biggest reason for optimism. Incredibly, Eddie Howe’s side arrived at Goodison Park having shipped 20 goals in their last ten outings, conceding three in six of those matches.

The script was meticulously scribed and, for once, Lukaku read and stuck to it perfectly.

It took him just 30 seconds to expose the Cherries frailties, ominously curling home a confident opener to tease the destruction that was to follow.

Bournemouth’s second half rally merely drew the sting from Everton, with Lukaku ending the match in riotous form.

Acquired by over 75,000 prior to today’s deadline, Lukaku boasted an ownership of 1.1 million FPL managers.

However, only 22% of those owners chose to back him with the captaincy, perhaps distracted by the lure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Harry Kane, having previously been stung by the Everton striker.

However, announcing himself this season with a hat-trick on Wearside, Lukaku chose Bournemouth as his next major victims and bullied them with a similar display of pace, power and finishing.

His 21-points ranks second only to Alexis Sanchez’ fabled London Stadium haul – Lukaku’s return today is the top individual score by any FPL forward.

With the fixtures remaining kind and with Gameweeks 26 and 28 booked in, his ownership and price will likely rocket.

However, while we can lavish praise his way this evening, we should not forget the frustration he can cause.

Stalling badly from Gameweek 11, Lukaku appeared stuck in a rut and unable to drag Everton from their Autumnal malaise.

But something clicked thereafter – perhaps the new arrivals on Merseyside, perhaps Ronald Koeman’s new formation – but the smile returned, and the energy and hunger came with it.

Incredibly, he now leads the Golden Boot race. Involved in 51% of Everton’s goals, boasting an almost identical points per match tally as both Diego Costa and Ibrahimovic and second only to Jermain Defoe for points per million value, the case for Lukaku is compelling.

Was there ever any doubts? Of course, but at least for tonight, we will conveniently forget the past.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Amat and Kos to Coleman and Brunt (next GW) give me this team for GW26

    Foster (Jak)
    Baines, Coleman, Brunt, Alonso, (JONES)
    Alli, Coutinho, Phillips, Carroll, (SANCHEZ)
    Lukaku (c), Gray (IBRA)

After that i'm thinking Coutinho to Siggy and Gray to Carroll (to field 9 in GW28)

Is it worth taking a hit do do either of those moves earlier ?

Morning guys! Am I missing something? Lukaku scored 4 goals = 20 points, 90 mins = 2 points, Bonus = 3 points. Shouldn't it be 25 points? Also, why didn't he get an assist for McCarthy's goal? I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation!

Ha ha ha! Thank you! Still think he should of got the assist though. It only bounced off the defender back to McCarthy.

21 points is correct (4 for a goal).

It's at times like this when I wish FLP had a hat-trick bonus.

McCarthy shot twice; had he scored with the first one Lukaku would've got the assist.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    3-4-3 v 3-5-2 revisited

With the number of midfield options dwindling and the quantity of third strikers vying for attention increasing, has 3-4-3 become the optimum formation.

    Forwards

Looking at FPL form (points per game over the last 30 days) Lukaku and Kane are the top two forwards (with 7.5 ppm).

But there are several other strong third striker options to emerge and rekindle form over the last month.

For West Ham – Carroll is averaging 6.0ppm in terms of form and costs just 6.3. He also plays GWK 26 and 28.

For Watford Deeney and Niang both average 6.5 and also offer strong value and reasonable fixtures, although GWK 28 is in doubt.

Then there’s Jermain Defoe, who just won’t slip into retirement quietly. A brace last night shows that he deserves a place in our sides as a third striker.

As well as Niang among the Prem Lg newbies there is also Gabbiadini – who scored on his Saints debut. Although he misses GWK 26, thereafter he will have at least one DGWK. That GWK 26 blank though means for now he is out of the running as a third striker.

    Midfielders

Sanchez and Hazard continue to tick along nicely, with 6.3 ppm over the last 30 days.

Sigurdsson looks a strong reliable third midfielder.

But then the pot begins to dry up….with Manchester City’s KDB and Sterling facing a GWK 26 blank

For a 4th/5th spot there are a few candidates - but can we rely on two players from this pot every week?

Barkley looks to be a good fourth midfielder, based on fixtures and blank avoidance.

But for a fifth midfielder the options among the top players in terms of recent FPL form are less than reliable for a weekly berth.

Phillips has lost Fantasy form in recent weeks.
    Stanislas has lost his place.
    Will Josh King start?
Antonio is currently being overshadowed by the cheaper Carroll at West Ham.
    Iwobi misses GWK 26
    Arnautovic looks pricey at 7.1
Hull’s N’Diaye scored an impressive 10 pts on his debut but can he do that every week?

We also have to take into account two sets of blanks, then double Gameweeks on the horizon, for our set up.

With all this in mind - are you looking to set your team up in a 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 ….or even a different formation with four at the back?

Issue is, one weeks (or for a couple) it's mids filling their boots, then fwds getting hauls, then defs goi g all-in.

I'm not sure if's worth planning at all 😀

Or at least that's what I'm telling myself 😛

How's about Alli and Eriksen ?

Liverpool mids are not mentioned too, but their form say it all.

For me, it's always 3-4-3. It's just a challenge to pick the right forward.

I was basing this around the form players only - Alli and Eriksen don't have FPL form currently. I've Alli myself - but currently Kane is the one to get.

Zero returns against sun MID is poor from the Spurs pair.

Yep was just using form as a hook for this...but yep...there's no denying that Alli and Eriksen can do damage.

They are also 2m or so cheaper than Kane.

      3-4-3 here
I seem to be the only one with Costa/Defoe (Ibra) for some reason. They seem to save me this week in balancing Lukaku score. I think you really need 3 decent strikers up there, Mids need to be flexible and interchangeable, so Sanchez is a dilemma.
Your back 3 seem template now, Alonso/Brunt/Colman look well worth the outlay with Pieters as back up that's looks a fire and forget option.

Perfect timing. No soon as I went 352 the midfield points ground to a halt and the 3rd striker slot has been somewhat revitalised. Think I might have to switch back to 343.

Obviously have to look at the individuals case by case. Sanchez didnt have a touch in the box, Alli and Eriksen missd out big time. Philips as you say has gone off boil. And why I have Coutinho...dunno.

As for covering the blanks, will load up with cheap defs. Might even add Carroll to my Lukaku mix though.

On form Lukaku and Kane should take the two spots. Both play GWK 26 too.

I think Costa is in with a shout of that second spot - especially with Swansea up next.....first rule of FPL - always captain Costa v Swansea.

For the third striker if he can stay fit Carroll is the best value definite GWK 28 and 26 third striker.

Defoe though is the king of the third strikers.

Kane has blanked the last 2 as well(taking out the penalty yesterday)
I think the shift from 3 at the back to 4 at the back has made Spurs a little less attacking
Alli had good chances as well yesterday...Eriksen is off the boil

"Kane has blanked last two"....except for that goal...that's only blanking once. As penalty taker in an attacking side that gives him the edge in tight games.

Re ditching Ibra...I'm currently thinking of ditching one of Ibra or Sanchez for CHe v swansea...but am undecided which.

All being well I'll have two frees then....with a view to getting them back.

GWK 26's good planning in fielding XI with no hits could all go to waste if popular captaincy pick Costa or Hazard runs riot for the non-planners.

I think With Sanchez upfront again, he'll be among the goals..Yeah he blanked yesterday but we shouldnt forget it was against the best defence in the league..
and Arsenal are much more attacking than United..
All depends on Ibra scoring/blanking today...
Hoping he blanks..my ibra to costa decision will be easier then...
Carroll looks good for the 3rd striker spot...any idea why was he subbed?

Hmm. Planners vs non-planners is not entirely fair.

Some folks are planning to have Costa and / or Hazard for SWA, in the belief that their scores will compensate for blanks.

I know a lot of people don't like double-ups but with the blank gameweeks coming up, a back four of Baines -- Coleman -- Brunt -- McAuley sounds better than winging it too much in midfield. I don't have the transfers to do it myself as I already have Foster, Brunt and Philips and need to conserve transfers to have the right number of players in GW28 and come out of it with 2FTs to move towards DGW teams.

been a problem all season that there hasn't been a consistent budget 4th/5th midfielder.
Plenty have shown bursts of high pts but none seem to be genuinely consistent.
Not sure on the exact stats but seems most weeks forwards are rarely producing more than 50% of the total goals scored.
Still an argument for 4-4-2 with the price comparisons between a good 4th defender and many 4th & 5th mids.

Hard to say. The past 30 days is when 3-5-2 was being promoted. Now in hindsight, it seems 3-4-3 should have been the call. Is another 30 days gonna bring us back to the same question in reverse and leaves us chasing tails yet again. Best just to pick one and stick?

Sticking with 3-4-3. I toyed with the idea of 3-5-2 earlier on but never committed to it and I don't think it's be worth it anymore. 3-4-3 is more flexible and I have the funds to afford a strong strike force.

It'd take two transfers to switch and another two to change back so not worth it anymore.

But how about a 4-3-3-formation? Are we ignoring the amazing form of certain defenders?

For starters, as mentioned on the FPL Show, before this week the four latest highest scorers in a GW had been defenders. Then add the defensive resiliance of Chelsea, Spurs and Everton, and also the attacking intent of Alonso, Cahill, Walker, Coleman, Baines, Brunt, McAuley, PVA and such. Depending on fixtures of course, isn't there better value here than scraping for a fourth mid in the same price bracket as say Coleman and Baines?

      For example:

      Heaton
      Alonso-Walker-Coleman-Brunt
      Sanchez-Hazard-Alli
      Costa-Lukaku-Carroll

      As opposed to:

      Heaton
      Alonso-Coleman-Brunt
      Sanchez-Hazard-Alli-Phillips/Zaha/Snodgrass/Stanislas
      Costa-Lukaku-Carroll

For sure I'd feel more comfortable with Walker in my starting 11 than with one of the cheaper mids? I find it difficult to understand why more people don't have Walker in their side on here; he's just so consistent: 11p-6p-1p-6p-11p-6p-6p-8p as his last 8 matches, averaging close to 7 PPM.

I'm looking at bringing Coleman in for Holebas this week and and sort of converting to 4-3-3, but formation will be fluid through blanks for sure.

      I'm back on 3 4 3 after a month of 3 5 2

obviously worked a treat this week with swapping Lallana and Gray for Tom Carroll and Lukaku

all depends on fixtures though - if there is one rule this season, it's very much that form is temporary

Are we a bit too hung up on whether 3-4-3 or 2-5-3 is the best formation? I am playing with four strong mids and two strong forwards. I swap my third forward and fifth mid around depending on who I think has the best chance at points and don't fixate too much about the shape of the team

With the midfielders being a problem, why not go 4-3-3, no shortage of options in defence, particularly as Baines, Coleman and Brunt won't blank, then you've got Chelsea/Spurs on top of that, and even Robertson/Maguire and Kone as cheapies to consider

Form over 30 days is based on too little data. Other factors should be taken into account before rejecting quality players such as Alli and Eriksen because of a small number of recent low scores.

Jesus could well be in all our teams once the blank game-weeks are over. Has made a terrific start, appears to have successfully replaced Aguero and is cheaper than the established premium players.

I actually played 5-4-1 this week. Alonso, Walker and Brunt all delivered and Coleman got an assist - unfortunately Chelsea conceded a very late goal to destroy Alonso's clean sheet, Baines blanked, Defoe stayed on my bench and I didn't own Lukaku, all of which resulted in yet another disappointing game-week score, but in an alternative universe it could have been brilliant!

Formations could be very variable over the next few game-weeks because of the distorting effects of the coming blank game-weeks, but 3-4-3 is certainly looking a lot more attractive than it did a few weeks ago.

It just depends on which players you have. There will always be more than five midfielders in form and more than three forwards in form at any given time. Those with Defoe as their third striker will tell you 3-4-3 is best, those with Sigurdsson as their fifth midfielder will tell you 3-5-2 is best.

In theory, if you can flawlessly pick out the best of the midfielders/forwards and avoid the trolls, you can make a good 5-3-2 with Chelsea/United/Spurs/Everton defenders. It just depends on who the individual players are.

Outrageous denial of an assist and how they give that last goal to Barkley when Lukaku clearly got the last touch is unbelievable

The government should be reforming FPL and not the FA

Potentially jamming up a valuable Everton place? Great fixtures and 26 & 28.

Let's face it, if you want three it's from Lukaku, Baines, Coleman, Funis Mori and possibly Barkley (probably not).

Therefore Holgate & Davies probably need to go?

Cheers Jaf. Wouldn't want 3 Everton, but agree Baines/Coleman would be nicer. Might downgrade Ibra after this week to Costa as enabler

That would work.....I'm probably also shifting Ibra, esp if he blanks tonight.

    Heaton.
    Walker, Brunt, Alonso.
    Phillips, Sanchez, Eriksen, Snodgrass.
    Kane, Lukaku, Ibra.
    Pickford, Funes Mori, Whelan, Amat.

The one thing with Liverpool is they don't have the squad to play two times a week. They have 12/13 decent players, but after that they are rubbish. Back to full strength now, no more midweek fixtures and the team have had a chance to play together again (even though they lost) after Coutinho's and Mane's absences.

          Mignolet
          Clyne Lovren Matip Milner
          Lallana Henderson Wijnaldum
          Mane Firmino Coutinho

Rondon and Phillips have been very unlucky in the last 4/5 weeks. Hit the bar / post, been on the end of some very good saves or been caught marginally offside when putting the ball in the net. Their luck may turn - we'll have to wait and see.

    A) Friend > 5.0 (who)

Morning all, your thoughts on this please?

    Foster
    Alonso Baines Jones
    Sanchez (c) Firmino Coutinho Chadli
    Kane Lukaku Carroll

    Subs: Heaton Brunt Yoshida Davies

    1 FT and 0 ITB.

    1. Firmino to Sigurdsson?

    2. Play Brunt or Jones?

This might sound like a silly question.

But what do you guys think about Baines > Coleman ?
I know it sounds too sideways, but watching Everton play it doesn't look like Baines is going to score or assist from an open play. Coleman on the other hand looks like he wants to get in the box at every opportunity. And even when they play 5 at the back, Coleman takes up much advanced position compared to Baines.

I remember what happened to people who persisted with Azpi instead of getting Alonso, saying it was too sideways. (Although in this case Baines has penalties)

With blanks coming up, transfers are crucial. But over the course of next 5 fixtures will a transfer wasted on this swap be justified ?

I think it is a good move if you are happy with the rest of your squad. Coleman is being more attacking than Baines especially when Everton play 3 at the back.

Dont think there's much difference in quality between the attackers of chelsea tottenham, mancity, arsenal or liverpool

The reason chelsea and spurs are 1st and 2nd is due to Wanyama/Dembele and Matic/Kante.(apart from their strong defence ofcourse)

    Unsung hero's.

Agree. but remember leicester won the title last year with Huth and Morgan as their central defenders (average defenders at best)

Take out Kante from their team and i think they wouldnt have won the league

Defenders aren't as important. Kante is a force of nature. Cahill looked finished last season. Luiz a laughing stock. Moses and Alonso? Come on.

Kante is player of the season by a mile. Anyone who can't see that doesn't understand football.

        Word up.

Kante is a Premier League winner. He could arguably win it for whoever he plays for every year.

As people still talk about 'the Makelele role' in years to come we will be talking about the 'Kante role'.

He's not as good as Makélélé was but he's probably the nearest I have seen. Plays the role in a different way though. Kante relies on athleticism and a fantastic engine. Makélélé relied on the most consummate positional sense I have ever seen in a footballer.

As a result, Makélélé was able to play at the very top well into his 30s. I'm not sure Kante will be able to do that. But he's a great player, no doubt of that.

I don't know Ruth. I'm beginning to form the opinion that he's better than Makelele in the sense the Makelele was strictly a breaker of a game. Kante has a lot more to his game imo in terms of play making ability and creating an attack from the back. More dynamic imo.

Kante is more dynamic. But he isn't a pure DM in actual fact. He plays alongside Matic and they both share that role in effect.

Makélélé was a pure DM and could play that position alone. With him sitting, no-one else was needed. The rest could go and play.

You watch Walcott and Ozil and you think these guys don't have the fight to win a league. You look at Pep and think why is he rotating so much? You look at Liverpool and you think their overall squad is rubbish (first eleven is fine) - they can't play more than once a week.

Unless FPL ever rewards points based on performance (a little like the BPS) players like this will never be worth having. It's a shame it won't ever happen because they have to keep the game mainstream.

    11. El-Kloppico

The reason I mentioned some way back that DM are wrongly rewarded in FPL. They can be the best players but when coming to points, if they are not on set pieces, they are of no value FPL-wise.
If for example there would have been points awarded for ball snatched from opponents, like save for GK, then only the DM will be regarded equally.

Such a shame these players aren't good FPL players. They don't get rewarded for the hard work they do. Wanyama practically collapsed to the floor at the end of the game yesterday. Man is a machine in front of the back 3/4.
