Stock Check – Gameweek 34 – Tuesday

Diego Costa delivers his biggest haul of the season as Chelsea put four past Southampton at the Bridge. Eden Hazard scores a fouth in four Gameweeks, while Marcos Alonso and Gary Cahill atone for the lack of a clean sheet with further attacking returns.

On the Rise

Eden Hazard
Reinstalled to the Chelsea first XI along with Diego Costa, the Belgian delivered yet again after firing the opener against Southampton.

Having emerged from the bench to see off Spurs with a goal and assist at Wembley, Hazard’s early strike means he has now produced points in six of his last seven league appearances.

That form has taken him above Dele Alli into second spot in the FPL midfield standings and the Blues’ schemer looks an assured target for many Wildcard rebuilding programmes.

Hazard has netted 11 times in front of his own supporters – more than any FPL midfielder – and the schedule from Gameweek 36 onwards (MID, wba & WAT, SUN) looks far too inviting to ignore.

Diego Costa
The Chelsea striker cast aside the recent malaise that brought him just two goals from the previous ten, delivering his best tally of the season and first double-figure return at Stamford Bridge.

The second most transferred-out player for Gameweek 34, Costa was shown the door by over 136,000 FPL managers, only to net twice and provide an assist in an emphatic performance against the Saints.

Hazard remains the star attraction as a route into Conte’s attack, yet Costa – sitting in 29% of squads – has the potential to damage non-owners if he can build on last night’s output.

He was the top transfer target overnight – attracting more than 8,000 new owners.

Marcos Alonso, Gary Cahill
It’s 11 league matches without a clean sheet now for Chelsea.

Yet Alonso and Cahill continue to lead the FPL defender standings thanks to their penchant for points at both ends of the pitch.

Transferred out by over 65,000 managers last week, the Spaniard teed up Cahill for the Blues’ second, taking his tally to five goals and as many assists for the season.

While Alonso remains our Chelsea defender of choice across those favourable fixtures, the Blues’ skipper – who has also now scored on five occasions – could offer a double-up option for those looking to use their Wildcard to load up on the league leaders for the run-in.

Cesc Fabregas
Surprisingly preferred on the right of the front three, Fabregas’ assist for Costa’s goal maintained a remarkable run of consistency at Stamford Bridge.

The playmaker has now produced returns in eight of Chelsea’s last nine home league matches and has been named in the first XI in each of their last four at Stamford Bridge.

Given that the Blues play at home three times – against Middlesbrough, Watford and Sunderland – in the final trio of Gameweeks, Fabregas, at just 6.9 and owned by 1%, could prove a decent, if nonetheless risky, differential.

Manolo Gabbiadini
The January signing supplied the assist for Southampton’s opener and continues to appeal as a mid-price Wildcard option ahead of their Double Gameweeks 36 and 37.

Gabbiadini now has four goals and an assist in six outings, producing points on four of those occasions. After rising quickly to 6.9, he now sits at just 6.4 and boasts only a 3% ownership.

Given that the Saints have home clashes against Hull City and Stoke City on either side of their back-to-back doubles, investment in the Italian looks set to accelerate. He was second only to Costa for transfers in overnight.

In Decline

Pedro
A run of nine straight Gameweek starts came to an end as the Spaniard dropped to the bench for the Saints’ encounter.

Pedro’s form has hardly been the most convincing – just a single assist in six before last night – but after being named as a substitute in the weekend cup win over Spurs, many expected him to return to Conte’s teamsheet.

He did at least emerge from the bench to earn an assist and may well return to the starting XI at Goodison Park this weekend. But the doubts now hovering over his pitch-time could well persuade would-be suitors to steer clear.

Nathan Redmond
Prior to last night, no outfield player had started more league matches for Southampton this season than Redmond.

Named in the Saints’ first XI in 28 of the opening 31 Gameweeks, the winger was among the subs as Puel handed Sofiane Boufal the chance to impress.

Having netted three times in six before last night, Redmond – at 5.9 – looked like offering a cheaper route into the Saints’ midfield than Dusan Tadic. Yet with James Ward-Prowse, at 5.0, starting each of the last nine, the 6%-owned Redmond could be best avoided.

A strong defence is overrated, especially with few fixtures to go. Rotation in itself has added value, so as long as you get top fixtures with your cheapies, your defence can match the output of a more costly one.

Not like you are completely Sacrificing Attack?
Jesus/Giroud instead of Costa isn't that Bad is it?
Combined with Rose/Vert/Monreal/Kompany instead of Stephens

It could be huge imo. Chelsea going for the title with great fixtures. Costa is the main arrow in the attack.

But perhaps the points can be found elsewhere, different ways of playing I guess. I always prioritise strikers and mids over defence, as that's where the explosive returns are. Clean sheets are so fragile, and can be gone in an instant with one lapse in concentration, even by big teams.

I'm going with budget defence plus all this big hitters.

Vertonghen would be my only premium defender.
And I think there is a case for a cheaper defence because I can't think of many premium defenders who are worth the price tag for the run in.

Anyone else planning out their GW36 WC, and then realising that it would give them a much better first XI this coming week as well?

It hadn't even occurred to me that it might be worth pulling the trigger now, until I compared my current team to my WC team for this week. Problem is that it feels like getting an extra week's worth of info first (is Jesus nailed? Costa back on form? etc) could be priceless.

The extra week is priceless IMO. I'd do it now otherwise but so many unknowns.

It's a good question. For me, I'm hoping this weekend gives a sense of whether Jesus is set to start (and whether on wing or up top), although given Pep's rotation I don't know whether the extra week's info really helps. Also whether Gabriel will keep his place in Arsenal's back three, and maybe whether Gabbi is definitely nailed for Southampton (though I think he is). All are on my WC draft. But given high risk of rotation anyway in 37, maybe I'm overthinking it all and should just get on with it!

as a GW35 captainer, a small plus is that you'll probably have 2 transfers going into GW37 just to rejig things if necessary

          1. hackneylad
            • 11 Years
            7 years, 2 days ago

Yep but problem is there might be a need for a rejig that involves more than 2FT if a big-hitter gets injured or you decide you need to restructure (e.g. ignore Costa on GW35 WC, then he smashes it again and you desperately want him in instead of Jesus for GW37!). But I agree, it's worth keeping the free transfers in mind.

Is interesting to see who of Gabriel/Holding loses the spot once Mustafi is healthy. Also, with the win this week Bournemouth look like they've secured a stay in the league, so they might tone it down now (similar to how they ended last season). Soton getting hammered might be a reason for Puel to try out Caceres (so Yoshi/Stephens might be at risk) - just a few things to think about.

Interested to hear some views on my WC strategy I adapted last week. Note that I've had 2 top 10k finishes in the past and this is my target again, currently ranked 60k so had ground to make up.

It seems most people saved their WC for GW35/36 and benchboost GW37. I am going to do the same but felt that I would be 'leaking' points now if I waited so I'm trying to take advantage of this week while also setting myself up for the upcoming double game weeks. This was my selection:

    Cech Pickford
    Alonso Yoshida Stones Gibson Baily
    Zaha Townsend Downing Tadic Sanchez
    Negredo Rashford Benteke

This means that I have 10 DGW players in GW 34 and Alonso. I've no doubt you had a giggle when you saw my midfield, especially Downing. All of these DGW attacking players had either form or fixtures going for them. 1 assist in 180 mins would be a bad return but still registers 7 points and there is min is 4 points which is close to an assist and anything more than 7 is a bonus. I also covered all basis as best I could which is demonstrated by the benteke haul but could easily have come or still come for rashford for example.

GW35 sees tough fixtures for Chelsea Everton Spurs and Arsenal who all play each other, so this minimises risk of big hauls for this gameweek. I only lack ManCity cover but have Man U cover. Key thing is the fixtures. Planned transfer is Negredo (MCI) -> Gabbiadini (HULL). So my team looks as such for GW 35

    Pickford (BOU)
Alonso (eve) Bailly (SWA) Yoshida (HULL)
Zaha (BUR) Townsend (BUR) Tadic (HULL) Sanchez (tot)
Gabbiadini (HULL) Benteke (BUR) Rashford (SWA)

My next transfer for GW 36 is an arsenal asset, probably Ozick so Downing -> Ozil. Now I have 3 Southampton and 3 Arsenal players for GW36.

For GW37 I will use benchboost and take a 12 point hit to get 4 inform players (prob spurs and chelsea) for zaha Townsend Benteke Gibson so I have 15 DGW players (Maybe 8 point hit if Benteke is worth it).

This was my idea of maximising point over the next few weeks. Interested to hear opinions on this?

This is not mainstream. But if you are serious about making up that kind of ground in a short time frame, maximizing your differential bets in a multi DGW backdrop, I applaud your balls to go for it. I share the same goal, but I was closer to 10k then you are, so didn't think I needed a plan with this many differentials. Still, with ground to make up, I opted to WC "early" in GW 33 to try to squeeze as much as I could out of player participation in all the upcoming DGWs. Helped massively so far by Ibra, which lead me to put the C on Benteke instead.

Yes my balls definitely grew when I opted for Downing, maybe he was one man too far haha!

Ya that is the idea and with the tough fixtures in GW 35 I'm trying to squeeze points as you say before GW 37. I will have spurs assests for GW37 but I share fear about lack of spurs assets.

I do feel that 180mins of footy can really give very solid returns or so is my experience in seasons gone by

That's too much of a gamble imo. I think this DGW was always going to be mediocre so betting your WC on it seems far too risky.

Your lack of ownership when it comes to big fpl assets is also likely to negate a lot of the ground you make up, as well as the inevitable points hit you'll have to take for GW37.

Ya I agree with you but I supppse I would add two things to my 10k target. 1 My team was in need of surgery and was leaking points and 2 It is hard to predict NOW which players I want for GW 37 and injuries/form can change quick.

So given I wanted to gain ground now and stop leaking points combined with the fact that I was unsure as to which double GW players to bring in, I felt this may be a profitable route less travelled by albeit I sense the risk. Perhaps Downing was too far.

It will be interesting to see how my rank goes

I know everyone's going for 36 but used mine last week. Gave me Bailly, De Gea, Benteke etc, far so good. Can't see things changing that much between now & 36, you'll still have a couple of FTs & if you need a -4 it'll possibly pay off. Just leave a little money so you have some room to move?

Really want 5 striker slots, 2 mids and 6 defs for my WC.

I think FPL would be improved if there were no restrictions on how many from each position you own except from the restriction of the budget on how many from each position you can afford. In fact, you could do away with positions entirely, beside GK, and just assign players DEF stickers to indicate they get points for CS etc. The DEF stickers represent how defensive the role of the player is (e.g., CBs have 2 stickers for full points; FB/WB/Def mids have 1 sticker for half points). Or even another tier (3-2-1-0 stickers). All of this would increase the pool of reasonable options throughout the season, and increase variation in FPL teams. What do you think?

  22. Piggs Boson
    • 12 Years
    7 years, 2 days ago

City's attacking points seem rather diluted.

They have: Silva, De Bruyne, Sterling, Sane, Aguero/Jesus?, all getting attacking returns, Yaya is also capable.

    Chelsea have just: Costa, Hazard
    Spurs: Kane, Eriksen, Alli
    Arsenal: Sanchez, Ozil, Striker, Walcott
United: Zlatan (did, hopefully the youngsters can match him...)

I tend to prefer to get big fish surrounded by little fish, in terms of pts. When that team score, you know pts are likely, and so is max bonus.

    What are your thoughts?

I think you can probably amend Arsenal down to ??? right now, I'm really struggling to see who I want.

City are a real conundrum. I want to get Sane, but if you look at his actual scoring its pretty poor. Not really sure where I'm going TBH.

I wouldn't really count Silva or KdB, maybe the latter. Spurs also have Son too.. You make a very good point though, need to bring Goal Involvement % into account when picking the stars of your team.

I'd say there's a few little fish out there surrounded by even littler fish, players of the Tekkers / Siggy / King ilk that we're all ignoring.

Perfect time to cash in if you must, but i would also look at the fixtures Chelsea have once more before deciding.

I've toyed with the idea on a couple of occasions, but ended up keeping him, coz he looks very very dangerous in every game.

Chelsea are shooting for the title and I think they'll keep a few CS along the way (even though recent history suggests against it).

Costa had 0 goals in the last 7 games in all competitions till yesterday. Look at the state today.

          Bad streaks happen.

attacking defender in a top team with set-pieces, hell no. their lack of clean sheets doesnt make any sense so shouldnt continue

It does make sense since the the other teams have found them out, playing 3-4-3 is easily exploited if one knows how to attack it. But selling Alonso is madness now, if not sold ages ago, with a smashing DGW to come.

Is Monreal not at risk of rotation with Gibbs over the doubles? Seeing him creeping into more teams

Gibbs only appeared 5 times this season in the league, doesn't seem to be any kind of threat.

Hardly an argument. Rotation during busy periods doesn't allow a bench player into the starting XI very often. I'm guessing less than 5 times a season in most cases. So 5 is actually quite a lot.

If Gibbs starts today then I would not get Monreal. If Nacho starts after 120 and derby coming up then he should be pretty secure for the rest of the season.

Could I get an order of priority of these players for GW36 onwards?

    a) Sanchez
    b) Hazard
    c) Costa
    d) Sane
    e) Jesus
    f) Lukaku
    g) Giroud

Sanchez, Hazard & Costa should be top priority.

A wait and watch approach might be better with Sane & Jesus. No one knows how Pep is going to rotate.

Hold Lukaku if you don't have a wc. And I wouldn't bother about Giroud.

    WC Team:

    De Gea, Pickford
    Alonso, Monreal, Yoshida, Stephens, Holgate
    Sanchez, Firmino, Eriksen, Alli, Sane
    Kane, Gabbi, Anichebe

    GW36 Firmino to Hazard

    Thoughts?

It's good. Could downgrade Alli/Eriksen to Son and bump up Anichebe?

      1. Darklord_bg
        • 7 Years

No real need to bump up Anichebe since I only need him for GW37.

I feel a bit apprehensive for triple Spurs in attack, though. Is it worth it to bring a Liverpool mid instead of one of the Spurs ones.

Then you could just wait and see, and have Erik/Son - Hazard as an option.
