The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 37

Frustration is the only word for it.

In a compelling season that has tested even the most hardened and experienced Fantasy manager, it seems we are destined to be deprived of a truly satisfying double Gameweek.

So often the pillars that hold up our season finale, we speculate and strategise, whipping ourselves into a frenzy as we conjure visions of big individual hauls and three-figure totals.

Inevitably they rarely live up to our expectations but this season’s double Gameweeks feel flatter than ever, with the past 48 hours proving particularly exasperating.

Friday provided an ominous opening, with Chelsea’s victory wrapping up the title race to introduce rotation concerns, while also providing blanks for both Eden Hazard and Diego Costa.

Mason Holgate’s withdrawal for Everton provided an additional blow for those with the Bench Boost in play – an early marker for Saturday’s misery.

Today’s events included a variety of cruel twists.

Manchester City’s failure to keep a clean sheet, together with Kevin De Bruyne’s blank, provided immediate irritation.

That was followed by Victor Anichebe’s injury and Jordan Pickford’s one-point return, before today’s arch villains – Southampton – provided the coup de grace.

Having shaken off his tinkerman moniker, Saints boss Claude Puel regressed to punish our Bench Boost ambitions with seven changes.

Manolo Gabbiadini and Dusan Tadic were nowhere to be seen, Jack Stephens sat unused on the bench. Then Middleborough played their part, notching an improbable consolation goal to snatch the points from the Southampton assets that remained.

Stoke City’s Peter Crouch then provided a sucker punch, quite literally, to deprive us of an Arsenal clean sheet and apply more salt to today’s wound.

Even this evening’s 12-point contribution from Alexis Sanchez, backed by over 450,000 with the captaincy, was a silver lining that had its cloud, the Chilean limping from the bet365 turf to cast doubt over his start against Sunderland in midweek.

He played on and scored while carrying the knock – an apparent thigh injury, perhaps a dead leg. We now have to hope that Sanchez has the opportunity to run at the Black Cats defence on Tuesday. With him, Gameweek 37 could yet deliver for so many.

Elsewhere today, it was perhaps typical that it was left to a pair of single fixture assets to provide some comfort, Swansea City’s Fernando Llorente and the prolific Josh King of Bournemouth repaying those who kept faith amid the clamour for twin-fixture targets.

The last two days provide a sobering reminder of how we can overplay the potential of a double Gameweek. But we’ll doubtless do it all over again, and also have to remain optimistic on what remains of Gameweek 37.

There are still many fixtures to be played out and, in all likelihood, further unexpected plot twists to come – some of which will hopefully turn more favourably for us Fantasy managers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

DGW as late as 37 is a lottery. Too many teams on the beach.

Anyone think John Terry's a shout for gameweek 38? Got to be a chance he starts in his last game for the club with the league already won.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is the Bench Boost best used away from end of season double Gameweeks?

For the second season in a row the bench boost chip, when used during an end of season double gameweek is looking like being a let down.

Rotation is a key factor – with Liverpool’s team tinkering in 15/16 disappointing many.

This year Chelsea look likely to do the same, and we have already seen significant rotation among Southampton and Arsenal’s ranks.

I don't think it is. GWK 1-6 or so are about feeling your way around the best players, formation etc. Its important to have a good wildcard if used earlier that can do well for a number of months and across xmas.

It was my first season playing properly, I didn't appreciate the significance of the chip until later in the season. From now on I will be using for DGWs that are early enough to be less of a rotation risk, if possible.

I think no. It's about having the right players. I have Sane, Shmeichel, Bertrand and Nyom on my bench. Other than Nyom I was expecting good returns from everyone. So it wasn't a bad choice tbh.

IMO it works as long as you field a mix of popular picks (likes of Citeh & Arsenal who have a lot to play for still) and some punts (I blindly went for Giroud despite everyone saying he won't start and all that, he generally plays like Lewandowski towards the end of every season). Eventually it's all down to a lot of planning yes but we all need a bit of luck.

He goes on this wild streak atleast twice every season. His goal at St. Mary's the other day was kind of a sign that he's in for another haul. Hence, I took a punt on him and it worked. Not a bad punt for a 3rd striker spot given the lack of options upfront apart from Jesus and Kane.

It's about picking the right players. Regardless of whether they have two games or not. I'm on 74 at the moment with Alli and Kane still to play. Captained Jesus. Had Jagielka and King as my only single weekers 🙂

It looks like I would have been considerably better off playing BB in any of the last 4 GWs, all had double figure scores, one above 20. This week Im on 4 with the whole bench having "played" (half of them didn't get a minute), I would take 10 points right now.

My highest points on the bench all season was GWK 1 - 27.

Scores of 19, 17, 15 following within the next few GWKs...Capoue factor proved more lucrative than the double Gameweeks.

Just wanted to add though some are measuring their bench based on their three lowest outfield players' scores. That doesn't do the BB justice as you need to measure by the three you would have benched before. Each year I try and do that to see what the BB is worth. This time mine was Cabelllero (3) King (9) Anichebe (1) and Holgate (1)

And Genuinely would have played Stephens over King as I went into this thinking he was looking safe from rotation plus had a strong chance of CS against a dire Boro side and a Europa focused ManU - A potential pts haul of around 12, whereas I thought King would get a little less.

I thought Holgate would get me 6 and Anichebe 4...So with a CS hopefully for Caballero v WBA I was anticipating something around 20-25 pts. Currently on 14 so if Caballero can get a CS then this probably will turn out as expected.

Holgate is just one of those things - it's a CS and at least 6pts if not for injury.
        I've averaged 21pts over last 3 weeks with a high of 31pts.
The thought process is sound when deciding BB it's just that it's had enough planning a normal GW 2 weeks ahead so planning for 15 players 2 weeks ahead is always fraught with risks.
If you could play BB same week as you wildcard then you'd end up with probably a very different squad.

The problem with looking back at weeks you had a good bench score is that sometimes those performances were totally out of the blue.

My most recent bench high score (20) came from Palace beating Liverpool and also included a auto sub due to Valencia not playing. I would never have chosen that week to BB. Plus if I had, I'd probably still whinged that one of my players didn't play that week!

Tekkers goal is making my bench look better now. Benteke and King in the points, Cech with another game to go and hopefully an appearance from Stephens.

In assessing the effectiveness of your bench boost, you not only have to count the 4 players that you would have benched anyway, you also need to allow for the auto-subs that would have been made.

So if Stephens doesn't play the next match either then you can't count King as part of your bench score.

My current bench score is a miserable 4 points (Pickford 1, Yoshida 2, Anichebe 1 & Gibson 0) - but if Gabbiadini doesn't play and Yoshida gets auto-subbed for him then my bench score so far drops to 2 points. I would certainly not have benched King.

        I have had 10 double-digit bench scores so far, in GWs 4 (Capoue 13), 5 (Jakupovic 7), 10 (Azpilicueta 8), 15 (Amat 6), 17 (Pickford 8), 24 (Defoe 13), 29 (Pickford 10), 30 (Brunt 6), 34 (Bertrand 6) and 36 (Pickford 9).

What lessons can I learn from this?
First, I played the wrong goalkeeper on 15 occasions; Jakupovic and later Pickford should have been my number one goalkeepers rather than Foster, Lloris and Grant, or I should have got Heaton early instead. I realised even before the season started that he had been outstanding in 2014-15, so why didn't I get him?
The rest were down to pure luck.

Perhaps it might be a good plan to boost the bench shortly before playing a wildcard, or to use it tactically. Apart from that it just seems to be a lottery.

Last season I played my Bench Boost in DGW34 and it was worth about 14 points. I had 9 points on my bench in DGW37 (including Sanchez 8, would you believe!) when I Triple Captained Payet (12*3). The winners were those who Triple Captained Sanchez for 25*3 in DGW34, but I did not own him at the time.

Don't think Arsenal rotated? They played their strongest team as Wenger saw it I the games- and are one of the teams with a lot to play for and don't think we can complain about their selections.

South'ton on the other hand typified what can happen with a team with little to play for.

Wild Carders who loaded up on Ars, City, Spurs & Chelsea will, by and large, be better off than those who didn't........relying on the likes of Stephns, Tadic, Pickford & Big Victor to make "perfect DGW" was always a long shot.

Arsenal dropped Ramsey, Welbeck, Gibbs that's three out of XI changes. How many of those will also play v Sunderland? Is Holding safe? Monreal? There was definitely rotation - whether for tactical reasons, rest or injury management - the result is the same - changed team sheet.

Fair enough but it's way different to what South'ton did and what Chelsea might do. The 3 changes you mention are 3 players who aren't regular starters - and could reasonably have been predicted.

Was looking at Gibbs myself but decided against! - was always going to be a dodgy one!

Monreal is 90% certain to start in my opinion - playing really well and ahead of Gibbs - having said that, there could be more changes midweek, but no because of "resting" reasons - Ramsey for Coquelin probably.

But you cant say either Ramsey, Welbeck are safe of rotation...
          Not sure about Gibbs.
But the criteria for BB must be nailedonness.
And something to play for. I chose Gabbi knowing he was a big risk. Austin coming back, team with nothing to pmay for. Same for Stephens.

From a potential points point-of-view a DGW has to be the optimal time to use BB.
What complicates it is not being able to use the chip the same week as you wildcard. Spurs pick up a point at West Ham and Chelsea aren't potentially rotating and you have strong assets against a weak side in the 2nd game.

Last year the 1st DGW was GW34 (Ithink) which was far enough away from the end of the season to minimize most teams rotating. Didn't most people BB in GW34 and TC GW37?

Again just 1 extra game in GW35 this season would have changed the BB options.

There doesn't seem to be a rationale for Saints rotation as it's difficult to factor in the unsettled behind-the-scenes problems at Southampton. Again for many people if Stephens & Gabbiadini are involved next game then a reasonable BB score is still possible.

taken more Man City over Chelsea probably. Sane v. Pedro was a big decision on WC.
Kept Bailly as he's now definitely going to play every game.

            Yeah that all makes sense.

For me, this is the 2nd season in a row when trying to combine wildcard and bench boost has failed.

      I was thinking this too.
My thinking is to play it in a 37 scenario but instead of having a load of enablers on the bench maybe its best to spread out our budgets a bit more.
Holgate was the perfect enabler for gw37 but got hauled off early. Unlucky for plenty of you.
In hindsight removing hazard for a Pedro or even better a Sanė would of helped to upgrade the rest of the team.
But considering it all on happy with a bench of super cheap players. They enable me a stronger 11

Good point. Certainly a factor in me getting Cech and Koscielny - switched to Monreal - rather than Gibbs and say Pickford, as many others did. Pedro instead of KDB/Eriksen helped fund that.

I used it this time last year and ended that week with something like 160 points, so I thought it was great last season. This week has been terrible, but that's fantasy football. It would be a terrible game if it was predictable.

Looks that way, and their was an inevitability about it with this DGW.

Rotation was a massive risk this gw, and then we have to look at the fixture list.

5 of the Top 6 have doubles, meaning we would already have a load of these players without a wildcard, and they are all high priced, meaning the peripheral players in our 15s had to be uber cheap. WBA were written off early, and Watford have been in horrendous form. Sunderland have been awful all season and have already been relegated. Other than those 3 we're looking at big hitters, who so far have done ok this gw. None of the big hitters have been rotated yet, just imagine the scenes.

But I don't get why anyone's surprised by the failure of City and Arsenal defs, when none of us have touched them all season.

When playing BB, only put nailed on players.
If at the end of season, we know there will be rotation. DGW and SGW. It's then more important to only keep players from team that have something to play.
Taking out Alonso this week was part of that plan : -) Well he still got 8 points but is a risk for the secong game of the week and GW38.
Keeping Coutinho instead was part of the same plan. Keeping nailed players with something to play for.
Obviously you can't get rid of all of them at the same time but the plan is there : -)

It's finding teams with something to play for that is the problem though!! A lot of us finding ourselves with a strong 11/12 players with a few dodgy "enablers" like Big Vic thrown in!!

But maybe get a good balance within the 15 players. No hazard but Pedro. No KDB but Sane or Sterling. No Kane but Jesus. That will help build a good balanced team with 15 good players.

In the last couple weeks I had three 20+ points on bench, this week 6 and I think It will be hard to get another 20 pointer. We shouldn't bother with dgw if we have nice bench in some sgw, will try it next season when my gut says its time.

Playing BB on a DGW is always going to lead you to certain selections by its mere design and options available. Stephens at that price and being supposedly nailed was always gonna come in.

The way I look at BB is that it allows me to play a strong front 8. However I noticed that even with a decent TV I had to go down the road of a cheap mid or cheap forward.

Thankfully I avoided Gabbi but again coupling BB on this particular DGW means you are led to

Worst still for those who had to WC in 35/36 it means we are using 1 week out of date information and alot can change in a week, especially at this late stage.

BB worked really well for me last season in the big DGW. I didn't ruin my team and kept in form SGW players. This year given the fact the big DGW was so late I felt a bit freer in my selections as only one more week to negotiate. It isn't looking as being as good for me this year.

Personally I'd rather use it in a DGW to maximise the possible score. Yes, rotation is always a risk, but that can be minimised by saying up the chances of a player playing both games.

BB does seem to get more difference in opinion that the other cards. WC when your team needs an overhaul. TC someone with good fixtures, usually a DGW.

I've had disappointing TCs last season and this, but I don't put it down to an inherent flaw in my strategy of using it, just I picked the wrong player.

Just like everything in FPL, it's about trying to pick the right players and captain for a given week and then relying on things completely out of your control to get a good score.

Surely BB only useful when all your squad plays. Using BB to mitigate against rotation is a no no.

If you are affected by rotation next week, you subs will come onto your team anyway - so if that happens, your BB won't give you anything you wouldn't have gotten anyway??

i think the bb fail has come down to something of a perfect storm with Southampton.

a week before they and Arsenal had a double so most people loaded up with 3. Not only that but the two 4.x defenders looked nailed and Gabby was great value as the third striker and worth a punt, besides there being so little choice in that area. this allowed us to strengthen the rest of the team on WC.

once 37 came round there didnt appear to be a need to waste hits on the defenders. only Gabby was looking shaky but im sure many like me had other potential fires like kosc to worry about or fancied a man city mid. so many kept 3 soton. bb chip cant be blamed for that.

My best bench points of the season with no chips used
      GW 2 21 points GW 12 26 points.
I would never of played bench boost on either gameweeks.
In my view double gameweeks are the best chance to get alot of points. Last season didn't work out, this one so far is not looking promising. Next season could be a massive points haul, I for one am not willing to take the chance to miss out.

I think many had built up an impractically high expectation of this GW. Right from the turn of the year when people were debating when to play the chips, there were articles and comments on here with the stats to show that rotation was much more prevalent in GW37 than in GW34 and that GW37 had so many tasty TC options instead. But that was then down to individual choice to BB34,TC37 or TC34,BB37 (34 meaning 34 or 36).

Personally, I kind of blew it by deactivating BB hours before the deadline in 34 because I got concerned with Valencia's and Walker's minutes. Turns out I ended up with 25 points on the bench thanks to de Roon's goal and Mawson's clean sheet. I am lucky that my GW36 bench was not too far off thanks to Pickford and Yoshida and so far Sanchez TC this week has worked out well.

But the biggest factor here is the WC. Had I played the BB in 34, my WC in 35 would have included Ake and Love and given me much more funds to play with for my XI for the doubles. And from 34 to 35 the fixture turn was so sharp that one could have had a good 34 fifteen and terrible 35 eleven. I think fixture changes like those are perfect for BB then WC, and even better if they coincide with a DGW, even if it is only a mini-DGW.

I got it right last year and it done me well in 37, but this year bench boost (37) has been a massive fail. Of course, it could still change with a Huth & Yosh clean sheet in the 2nd games, but I doubt it. Will use it when/if I feel the time is more beneficial next season, that's for sure.

He warned us last season that Bench Boost was overrated in these parts and should be used independently of the wildcard instead of using the pair as a combination.

This season he played his Bench Boost in GW6 for a total game-week score of 73, including 10 points from a genuine bench.

He's played his Triple Captain this GW following a wildcard in GW36, but he's put it on KDB rather than Sanchez, so he'll be hoping that KDB gets at least 6 points more against West Brom than Sanchez does against Sunderland.

So as with everything in FPL it depends on the players you pick and a bit of luck.

I did TC in Lukaku's DGW last year and Aguero this year. Both weren't very good. Does that mean using TC in a DGW is wrong? Nope just I picked the wrong player.

My bench has scored 19 with two more games to go so I'm relatively pleased with that.

            Ruth's strategy ...

            Team 1 BB GW1 - 15 points, GW37 7 points off dodgy SG fodder

            Team 2 BB GW6 - 10 points. GW37 6 points off dodgy SG fodder

            Team 3 - not sure

            Does not really prove anything

BB when you think you have your strongest nailed bench seems to be the best strategy, which may even be GW1 if you pick a strong 15, because many seem to play the inevitable GW3 WC anyway

No. It's best used in a DGW.

Well maybe 37 is too late, but a 36 one would have worked great for me this year with Caballero, Albrighton and Stephens all delivering points. Too early to say yet how it worked out this round.

The problem is, there were no good mid-price options, enabling the distributions of funds more evenly, and thus getting a strong bench in gw 37 this season, even with good TV.

The wc gw 36 template was all about big hitters and enablers. My TV was 104.7 in gw 35, and after getting all the big hitters I needed, including the Spurs and Chelsea players, all I got left on the bench was Pickford, Maguire, Stephens and Anichebe. There were almost no budget friendly options with good dgw.

So you can play it earlier, in a sigle gw, when you feel you have strong bench, or save it for wc+dgw combination, to get the most out of those fixtures, but risking rotation and that most essential players with good dgw will be too expensive, and you just have to fill your bench with enablers you don't expect to do much.

This is superb time to play it. When your players on the bench have high points potential. The fact that its not going well for you or a set of people shouldn't cause generalization.

I've gotten 17 (Pickford 1+, luiz 8+, capoue 2+, Kelly 6) and 3 games left from it. 2 points each will be 6. I haven't had 23 points on my bench before.

I think the one lesson Ive learnt is to save TC to this last dgw and use the other chips when your bench has the highest possible chance of return sgw or dgw vs lower opposition. Also I am going to be playing fully boring next year, as 4 point hits are costly and I always did better when I didn't take the hits

with the logic of impending rotation at the end of the season and lack of motivation for most, I ended up playing BB on gw34. Had henessey(5) T.Carroll(10) Holebas(1) and Holgate (8) an aggregate of 24 pts from players with total value 17 million (at that point in time). That allowed me to have a very star studded starting 11. Aguerro injury derailed my financial planning subsequently. However, gw37 is proving highly stressful (hoping for unlikely goals to eradicate cleanies and rotation of DGW cheapie assets) to help me stay in contention for ML glory and Overall ranking. currently sitting on 16,517 OR. my point is that even with such a successful BB back in 34 the combo of DGW and BB could be devastating.

But you were just a bit lucky to catch Carroll & Holgate - they are both playing this week too and haven't returned against weak opposition in winning teams. It doesn't really prove much except that we need a bit of good fortune whenever we play our chips

    39. Sparty On
      • 7 Years

There is unpredictability with this chip no matter when you use it, but even if you only get 120 minutes out of a bench player over the DGW instead of 180, you're still improving your odds.

Also, there is value to using it late in that you can plan in advance while not worrying too much about long-term repercussions to your lineup as you only need to hold on for - in the case of this season - one more week. For the other 36 weeks or so of the season you can afford to carry at least one budget bench player to free up funds for your starting lineup. If you play it midseason, you might be stuck with bench players that are more expensive than necessary. Not much glory in racking up bench points when you've used your BB and at the expense of spending more on your starters.

If Hull get a draw today, they will still be a favourite to get relegated due to worse goal difference.

If Hull get 3 points today, they will create the 3-horse race in relegation battle : CPL (38 pts), SWA (38 pts), and HUL (37 pts).

If there is one thing I have learnt this season it is to just follow the FPL Show on the FPL website. Give excellent advice and basically can just do what they say and you will fly up the ranks. For example, they told you when to WC, play BB etc. They pick out the best differentials. They even came up with a template WC team for GW36 to follow.

To be honest, if you just followed their advice you would probably be in the Top 20k. The show has evolved a lot since GW1 and it basically summarises everything you get here but in a bitesize 30 mins.

Not really. All that does is put forward what you can do if you take some time out. These FPL show folks no doubt spend hours looking at the stats. It's all there its all there for you to do same. Not exactly as skilled as poker where you have to do a bit of math is it 😉

We know all the inputs over there come from Mark right? I reckon even the FPL official scout squad every week is the one drafted by Mark. It's like flip sides of the same coin, FFS or @officialFPL.

That is true, but it takes less than 30 mins every week. Rather than trawling through the FFS website you can just watch their content and bingo.

True that. Even I prefer watching that 30 mins clip for decisions related to my team. Mark IMO one of the better FPL pundits out there, if not the best. Even on the scoutcast, I prefer considering his ideas most of the times. I mostly browse through FFS articles and comments to chill/have fun/interact etc.; the way we wanna put it.

West Ham will give them one tough game. That's for sure. Bilic is fighting for his credibility, Adrian is hot as keeper can get, defence is tight. There won't be many goals scored by Pool today. Plus they tend to crumble under the pressure or when the pitch is too dry 😉

Im not feeling confident about beating the iron men who blow bubbles. The footballing gods have been nasty this year.
Utd will win Europa League, Chelsea league and cup double.
Liverpool injury hit season, a small weak squad with bench full of kids. The season coming to an end with the players struggling to get over the line. Finishing in the top four is vital to be able to attract better calibre of players. Just hope the players dont bottle it.

Has anyone (or is it even possible) ever worked out the highest possible score you can get each season?

As in start with the most appropriate 15 to ensure highest scores each week, making perfect transfers (if required) and captaining the correct player every GW.

So many permutations but there must be an optimum score for a season.

Wonder how much higher it is over OR1 at seasons end.

Somebody work this out for me?

    League - Salford Lads Club

Rattus Norvegicus (my team) total for May (GW 36 + 37) is 88 + 70 = 158, however the league shows me on 154 because an adjustment has been made to the total for 2 transfers i.e -4pts that I made for GW 36

My opponent Zlatan Reds total for May (GW 36 + 37) is 71 + 57 = 128 points. The league shows 128 for May. He has not been deducted the twelve points for transfers he made for GW 36.

I have screenshots of the leagues before the points went on for GW 37 and after the start of GW 37.

Any ideas - the rules say the points come off your total at the start of the next GW. Mine have come off but his haven't

For some reason any hits you take on the first GW does not count towards the total for that month.

Yes. I understand that the transfers before The game is split into months and Gameweeks. At the beginning of each month, any transfer points spent in preparation for the first Gameweek of the month are not taken off the month score.

This rule is in place to enable managers who are struggling on the FPL game, perhaps with a number of injured or poorly performing players in their squads, to compete for the monthly prizes.

Still doesn't explain why his total has not been affected.
