Team Of The Season – Seamus Coleman

Following two very productive seasons, Everton’s Seamus Coleman regressed during 2015/16, largely due to two separate injury lay-offs.

As a result, he began this season slightly under the radar – in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Republic of Ireland defender saw his price drop to 5.5.

That already looked good value, given his attacking capabilities from right-back and the prospect of fresh impetus from new Toffees boss Ronald Koeman.

Sure enough, after ticking over during the first half of the season, a favourable run of fixtures from the mid-point onwards saw Coleman put together a sensational run of form.

That spell ultimately earned the defender a place in our Team of the Season.

The Statistics

An ankle injury meant Coleman didn’t make his first appearance of the campaign until Gameweek 4, when he picked up six points in the 3-0 victory over Sunderland.

He followed that up with a goal in the 3-1 win against Middlesbrough a week later, and further strikes at Goodison Park followed against Swansea City and Arsenal during the first half of the campaign.

In terms of clean sheets, Coleman registered 10 over the course of the season, with Everton keeping 13 in total – an increase from the 12 that Southampton managed under the stewardship of Koeman in 2015/16.

But it was a 12-point haul in the emphatic 4-0 victory over Manchester City in Gameweek 21 that put Fantasy managers on red alert regarding the Toffees defender.

Coleman registered an assist and maximum bonus points in that win, which came ahead of a hugely favourable schedule for Koeman’s side.

By this stage, Coleman was owned by just 195,977 FPL managers.

With Koeman now dabbling with a three-man defence, deploying Colman at wing-back, Coleman flourished further with a 15-point score in the 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace. At that point, it became clear that he was pushing for ‘must-have’ status.

Coleman would go on to produce four clean sheets, three assists and four bonus points in his next seven starts as his price rose to a high of 6.1 in Gameweek 29, with the right-back then owned by 851,796 bosses.

But his season was then brought to a cruel conclusion when he suffered a broken leg during Republic of Ireland’s World Cup Qualifier against Wales at the end of March.

He ended the campaign with 133 points in FPL, placing him seventh among defenders in the game.

In terms of points per match (ppm), Coleman was ranked fourth with 5.1, while his four double-digit scores earned him four appearances in the Dream Team – only Bournemouth’s Charlie Daniels (five) received more call-ups among defenders.

The Prospects

While there is no exact timeline on Coleman’s return, early reports following his operation suggested that he may be running again by August. However, given the apparent severity of his double leg break, we should be prepared for him to be sidelined for at least the first half of the 2017/18 campaign.

The defender did sign a new five-year contract with the Toffees earlier this month, with the faith shown by the club illustrating they have no doubts that he will make a full recovery.

His performances this season might merit a price rise to 6.0 in FPL, although his injury could mean he remains at 5.5.

In Coleman’s absence, Mason Holgate deputised at right-back. Youngster Jonjoe Kenny is another option for Koeman, with the Republic of Ireland international himself heaping praise on how well the two youngsters performed in his absence.

But Koeman will surely explore the possibility of bringing in a more senior option, with Southampton’s Cedric Soares and the recently released Cuco Martina, having both previously worked with Koeman at St Mary’s, likely to be on the radar.

Holgate certainly looks set to see his price of 4.0 in FPL rise this summer, perhaps to 5.0, while senior defenders Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka are likely to warrant price tags of 5.5 given their attacking threat.

As for Coleman, his progress will be keenly monitored, and should he be able to recreate the form he showed before his injury, there’s little doubt that his Fantasy stock will soar once again.

          Yeah, Really good,
Already thinking at limiting GK/Def xfers and getting cheap passer/tackler enablers.

What's your plan schedule-wise? Regular from now or waiting for the prices to be released?

If that his his wish to leave then yes i believe we can bring in a lesser keeper (because lets face it they all are) and still improve as a team but if he genuinely wants to stay on after us getting back into the CL then we don't need the money for him at all.. Mourinho playing a smart game when asked about it a week or two ago when he said his next game would be in pre season.. almost forcing de Gea to force the move..

Stupid money to pay for a keeper. If I know nothing else about football it's that any keeper at any time can suffer with lack of confidence for no apparent reason and sink like a stone. I'm not saying it will because he's world class, but it might, it happens a lot more to keepers than any other position on the pitch.

Tend to agree but in this case the huge fee would be down to his quality and more so his age at only 26 he has the guts of 10 years left at the top who knows even longer.. would need to be careful because any a few howlers in front of the Madrid fans and they will turn on him in a heartbeat

Yep...that's what can happen. I've no problem with the signing, he's a good keeper but just wanted to make the point that keepers are fickle. 60 mill is a lot of money.

Been on the cards for a while. Mourinho said earlier I'm the season that if he wanted to move then United wouldn't stand in his way. There must have been some sort of prompt for saying that rather than just saying it out of the blue...

No doubt he did want the move before sure it was agreed until the whole fax machine mix up.. he did then commit to a 4 year contract after that.. perhaps the two trophies and CL confirmation has persuaded him to stay on.. ball firmly in his court now

Maybe he pines for Spain on and off. It wouldn't mean he dislikes playing for Manchester United...just that he misses home and could go...

He arguably the best in the world and still very young for a keeper so they will do their best to keep him.. unless he really wants and pushes for the move in which case we will sell for something around that 60 mark that is being quoted..

Romero did a fine job i agree but i would have reservations about him being given the number 1 spot tbh and i think Jose would too.. if de Gea does go i would expect at the very least there would be a replacement that Romero would compete with

The money does not really matter to United it is players we need
If Dave wants to go back to Spain then i would not hold a grudge he has been a shining light for United in a sea of darkness and has served the club well

If he goes i think a player exchange would be a better deal forget JRod it is Varane or Bale we need
At the end of the day he could be replaced but it will take time to bed in a keeper that will come close to reaching the standard that our Dave has set

Sorry if I hurt any Manu/Mourinho fans on here, but I honestly don't know why you would want to play under Mourinho if you are a striker/winger/attacking midfielder. He's a great coach, but I think he gets too much respect these days, it is much harder to let your team play nice attacking football than to park the bus every game. If you are a player like Griezman, surely you would rather play in a team where your team mates are actually trying to attack, no?

They're an odd team for sure. They actually do create a lot of chances and are fairly attacking (stats) but when you actually watch them it's hard to see. They just manage to be boring somehow for long spells.

They want to win silverware and have something to show for their careers when they are over.. no one wins trophies like Mourinho..

On the whole style thing he will park a bus if he sees that as the best way of nullifying a good team and nicking a goal and is more than capable of going out and putting a team to the sword too.. i'm not sure you remember his Chelsea teams of years gone by with Duff Robben Drogba and Real Madrid when he won la liga blowing teams away.. same at Inter and Porto..

The reason there would have been more nullifying of opponents this season is because he took over a squad put together by David Moyes and Lvg and at this point has only made 4 changes to it.. as he fills the squad with more players he feel he can fully trust then the shackles will come off a lot more like at every other club

I hope so. Like most neutrals I've looked forward to watching United as something of a cavalier team over the years capable of drubbing anybody at any given time.

United's attacking stats for the season arranged by collective ICT threat for the whole team...http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/4689/... Hit the ICT creativity column for chances created...

Yeah if we had been a lot more clinical in front of goal i doubt we would be having this discussion at all but like i said there will be more free flowing football when he has more of those in attack to produce it and those behind to protect while they do.. when the big away games come around nothing will change.. it will be safety first get behind the ball and break at pace and effectively when the chance arises

While I agree that his starting position was not great, and that the team has much improved since the LVG time (although, you could and probably should attribute that to Pogba and Zlatan more than to Mou), you're appreciating You too much on early merits. He's been a bore for a long, and not such a winner either.

Since his 2010 CL win with Inter, Mourninho has won La Liga with Real 2012, and PL with Chelsea 2015. Aside from that, it's a couple of domestic cups and 1 EL. Those smaller titles are all good and well for Spurs or Ajax, but not big club material. If you play CL semis every year like Griezmann does at Atleti, playing PL 4th place and EL and FA titles is just no improvement on that.

You'll be at ease finding more successful managers over last 7 seasons.

He's been extremely negative with all his teams during this time, including Chelsea. And he has even explained why so with his idea of the team making more errors losing.

Meanwhile, I am not saying that Griezmann wouldn't join ManU. He said it himself he could, so he could.

I wouldn't agree i was going too big on early merits given he lifted two trophies one domestic and one in europe within the last few months you can discredit them all you like but they are major trophies all the same and trophies Klopp Wenger Pep Poch would take your hand off for in current circumstances.. a full 2 years since his last PL title in which that Chelsea team played some blinding stuff until the latter months when he just chilled out with the feet up and a cigar and saw it over the line..

He's also played some fantastic stuff with every team he has been in charge of and will always revert to safety first in the big away games that won't change and i said exactly that in my first post..

I'v supported United for close to thirty years and seen plenty of good football over the years and believe me i'm more than happy with Jose Mourinho right now and what he's looking to build

I guarantee that Klopp, Pep and Poch wouldn't give a rats arse for those trophies. Wenger would for EL, because it gives CL football. But Mourinho himself called it a mickey mouse cup, or what was it, a couple of years back, and said something like it is embarrassing to even compete for it. And it is, for ManU. Essentially, it meant they were not good enough to compete for CL.

And what are those domestic cups even? I honestly don't even remember what they are and within one year nobody but ManU fans remember they won them.

Not sure if you're even worth an answer, but I give you a one.

Like I said, it's the CL spot that matters. The EL title itself doesn't, for big clubs and their managers.

And you don't see Klopp regretting those domestic cups now that he's got CL football for him, do you? Conte lost a domestic cup final too, Wenger won. Only one was happy after the match, and that was Conte.

Well if they wouldn't give a rats for them they would need to re evaluate given none of them won a pick of anything this season between them.. has Poch won anything ever? and you're telling me he would turn his nose up at it.. wind it in mate.. he called it the mickey mouse to have a pop at Benitez who had just won it and at that time Jose was in the CL.. this season through no fault of his own he found himself involved in it and it gave the prize of not only the only trophy not won by Man United in their history but staright into the CL group stages so he just went out and won it.. as he does..

Of course the fans will remember them that's what football is about.. winning.. getting your clubs name on the trophies and in the history books.. there aren't trophies handed out for 2nd 3rd 4th place and fannying about with tiki taka shiping goals left right and centre.. at least i haven't seen them

But they don't win enough games.
Many of their opponents are happy to just sit back and play for a draw, and United have not been confident enough since Fergie retired to take a few more risks in order to break them down.

Jose was too proud of his long unbeaten run in the Premier League this season. That might be OK in Cup competitions, but in the Premier League the top teams need to risk the occasional loss in order to get more wins against the weaker opposition. A sequence of 5 wins and 1 loss (15 points) is far more valuable than an unbeaten one of 3 wins and 3 draws (12 points).

He has also complained too much about United's fixture congestion and his players' tiredness. It's the same for any successful club that is seriously competing for several major trophies. I don't remember Fergie making that much fuss the year they won the big treble, or Liverpool back in the 70s and 80s when they often came close to various trebles - and United aren't the only club to be hit by injuries either. They should have the wealth and squad strength to deal with it.

Jose called himself The Special One, but he's no longer the League's outstanding manager. Pep hasn't yet lived up to his reputation either. They have both been outshone this season by Conte and Poch.

I agree to some extent. If I was a hot young prospect with the freedom to choose from a list of clubs, I'd be avoiding Mourinho. Giving youngsters playing time is one thing, being able to develop them into the best they can be is a very different thing.

Point is more about developing youngsters. Martial has found himself played out of position and chasing full backs, Rashford was played out of position for the majority of the season and despite his bit of form towards the end of the season, there was no amazing development from last season to this.

It's a career tbf . Players don't have unlimited chances to secure a move to a big club . A loss of form or a bad injury could ensure a mediocre career or early retirement eg Torres
Being a top player does not allow you to pick your own club . There is no guarantee Barca , Madrid etc will be interested in the present or future . United are expected to bounce back sooner rather than later considering their coach and the amount of money they are spending . You are thinking like a fan imo .

Just an FPL post in amongst the transfer news.

With only a few exceptions (Dark knight) the perceived wisdom is to go cheap in defence, especially early season, with maybe just one big hitter defender (who quite often gets sold the first time we need the money)...but...

Something happened this season in the PL with the success of Chelsea's 3-5-2...other clubs began to follow suit !!....Notably Arsenal at the end of the season plus Everton on and off, and Spurs the same...

Is it time for some of us to revise our gameplan?

Alonso Bellerin Coleman (or similar) would usually be a no go...but is it now?

They may effectively be three mids available at 5.5/6.0.....

If the trend towards 3-5-2 continues then I doubt Alonso would be the best pick of the bunch...he'd certainly have competition.

The first thing I'll do is put 4 or 5 premium Wingbacks in and see what's possible from there. Then probably ending up removing the least nailed 1 or 2 because nailedness may be a concern at the start of the season in that position. I'd replace them with cheapies, or stretch to 5 M if I was happy with having 1 or 2 cheap nailed good attacking options if they exist.

Too early to say, but basically yeah it's an option, and I'd consider what 4 or 5 at the back would look like, especially if they were all definite starters

      1. Deulofail

Three good WB's (5.5/6.0) with 4.5 and 4.0 defenders in the other two spots as subs and continue with 3-4-3 might be doable.

It's all hypothetical of course and relies on the trend continuing...

May have to go with a 5 2 3 formation to afford Kane, Jesus and maybe even Aguero upfront. Good wingbacks might get 5ppg, equivalent to good MIDs.

My initial plan is to have:

Bellerin, City FB (Mendy/Walker maybe), 4.5, 4.5, Amat.

Always been one to spend super cheap in defence but I strongly agree with you in that defenders are a new breed nowadays. 6m for a midifielder that gets clean sheets is gold, as we saw this season.

Possibly. Although I think the real way to do it would be to look at the cheap teams that are playing 3-5-2.

Three from the top teams is probably still too much for me. It's so hard to pick the correct big hitters, particularly at the beginning of the season when TV is low. I think I'll end up going cheap and then reassess, with the caveat that I'd adapt if there were cheap or midprice options in 3-5-2

    7. MTPockets
        6 years, 11 months ago

Next season may be the first where I bin the uber-cheap defence idea. Repeatedly poor picks (e.g. Kelly, Chambers, Friend, Amat) stuffed up my squad b/c got increasingly difficult to shift them. Don't fancy that again, and as you say, formations may lend themselves to a different points approach.

Nope. United and Tottenham joint-top on 17 clean sheets each. Chelsea just behind them. Not sure how many they had though.

The timing is awfully strange for sure. Doubt RM would make it public prior to a CL final and knock their current GK confidence.

There is no way Zizou would lessen the confidence in Navas right before the CL final when Keylor was arguably in the top 3 with Isco and Ronnie in the last few months. As far as Zizou is concerned, Keylor is good enough keeper (Id argue hes better than Dave) for Madrid, so anything that concerns this transfer is based of Florentinos wishes who wants a galactico in the net. A lot depends on the result of the final. Win and Zizou gets free hands, lose and Perez will sign the players he could get the most marketing off as a side of securing his position as a chief.

Coleman in team of the year.

What a joke. I thought the criteria was a player that played the whole season - or near enough? Coleman had a good run of 7-10 games but did nothing else.

These things lose all credibility when we make these sort of decisions.

Would be great if we could get proper upgrades on that potential lineup but I can't see the starting eleven being far off. As you say Hendo could be a doubt with his chronic heel problem but a world class signing in central midfield could be key. It's the depth of squad that's lacking and competition for places. Also tactically we struggled in the air and against lesser teams sitting deep so that would need to be addressed; Benteke might of given us an edge with both of those weaknesses.

Yeah he really has. I just think the team was more free flowing and fun to watch when he played out wide. Something like this would be great:

                  Cout - Firm - Mané
                  Wijnaldum - Keita - Lallana

i think that had a lot to do with Mane playing. Egypt press suggesting we have agreed deal for Salah. I would love another fast player in the front 3 to allow Coutinho to pull strings from midfield

I totally agree. Getting him back in like a great transfer in itself. Assuming we sign Salah I totally agree with you. We still have to rotate anyway so I would love Coutinho in a midfield three and those guys running riot infront of him.

think Coutinho might play on left against the better teams. Playing him in midfield prob works against the smaller more defensive teams i.e. Man Utd

I think Karius will eventually be first choice, unless Klopp reneges on his promise. And I don't think we'll sign VVD, or any CB in fact, supposedly there is no interest in anyone for that position. Henderson starts for me.
