The Numbers Game – Manchester United

Our summer series of members’ articles, offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of the previous campaign, continues with Manchester United.

To get things up and running, we’ll look at the performance levels on a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

Replacing Louis van Gaal as manager last May, Jose Mourinho could only manage a sixth-place finish in his first year in charge at Old Trafford.

This was, in part, due to the club’s successful march to Europa League success as Mourinho rotated his side towards the latter stages of the league season.

Despite adding big-name buys such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack, the Red Devils netted just 54 times – up five on 2015/16 and only eighth best in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, a total of 69 points was just three more than their haul from Van Gaal’s final year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Cleansheets are rare at the start of a season. Would rather pick up 3 strong forwards

If Cedric looked likely to miss GW1 wouldn't you just start with him anyway and expect him to be back GW2? seems a waste of transfer to get him in later, and waste of 0.5 to get Bertrand instead...?

Nice, a tip can be to leave 0.5 ITB in case Morata flops and/or Jesus goes large in GW1 so you can use your FT to do Morata>Jesus... I think Jesus looks better for GW2-6, but Morata looks better for GW1 so u get best of boh worlds 🙂

Relatively settled on this 4-3-3... Albeit i did bow to pressure & squeeze 0.5 out of my bench to upgrade Lindy > Bailly... Looking ok? Any changes obvious?

    Hart
    Bailly, Trippier, Cedric, Daniels
    Alli, Willian, Phillips
    Kane, Kaku, Jesus
    (Elliot, RLC, Carroll, 4.0)

    1. Salah’s Sonnet

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

Yeah i originally had Ramsey in the 7.0 slot, but Willian is edging it for GW1. I can't gamble on Lacazette... Thought about Ozil instead of Alli, but couldn't do it either!

        1. Salah’s Sonnet
          • 12 Years
          6 years, 9 months ago

Yeah agreed Willian seems much more likely to produce as well.
I can't bring myself to gamble in Lacazette either.
I like it, the forward line makes the sacrifices in midfield worth it.

    2. n-doggg
      • 11 Years

Mid looks very weak but it would with that attack. Couple of points

Jesus nailed? Worth waiting a few weeks?
Defence seems quite expensive given your week midfield. I'd downgrade Daniels and at least one more

Thx... Yeah i think Alli will get a lot of midfield points & Willian for first 3 weeks... phillips is my nap for this year, think he's going to do great things 🙂

    3. Individual

Think Linda to Bailly had to be done.

I think RLC is a bit of a risk, if he doesn't start GW1 he might end up being sold by many and maybe even threatening a drop - it's always so volatile come GW1. But it could pay off, equally, not too many 4.5 mids around which are exciting 😀

Avoidng Dawson on purpose... He only got 100 points last year from a full season, mostly due to yellow cards! He is a magnet for them, cost him 10 points directly + another few bonus. Danielsmlooks like a 130 pointer for same price

    Southampton

When the fixtures and then prices were announced there was much love for Southampton. Cheap assets, good fixtures. However, their defence looks to be becoming weaker by the minute, now even talk of Bertand being off.
New manager, fire sale, uncertainty about starters and morale, players training alone. Suddenly you have to wonder if this is the season when it all falls apart, they have managed to reinvent themselves a few times recently, can they pull off the same trick again?

      • 7 Years

Last season, towards the end everyone said the same thing, yet I picked Maya Yoshida who got me a bunch of clean sheets and BAPS and a couple of odd goals here and there. I don't think Cedric or Yoshida would massively let us down looking at their opening fixtures.

True. And Jack Stephens grew into his role so will be better for the experience.

Can't see Bertrand leaving - he left Chelsea to get off the bench and on with his career. Why would he now decide he likes the bench again?

Their manager looks Tony Pulisinho look attack minded.
Will only buy defenders from them.

Looks like a manager who bases his approach on defensive solidity. Lots of fans on Twitter saying defenders fine but the midfielders might be a ? as he will play on the counterattack - could benefit pacey Redmond

Sure they'll be OK, but only got 1 atm - if Austin looks like a starter tho he could barge into 3rd striker spot.

To be fair this is said every year. The likes of Shaw, Clyne, Alderweireld, Schinderlin, Wanyama are sold every year and they still manage a good defensive record for the most part. Losing Bertrand and VVD may be a bit too much imo, but I wouldn't count Southampton out.

      better manager?
      what fire sale?
      who is uncertain about starters?
      player training alone.

Southampton have one thing that some clubs (such as West Ham) don't have - that is team spirit. Even if VVD is sulking, Yoshida, Stephens, Targett, Davis, Austin, JWP, Redmond will try for the club.

    Any suggestions on my draft?

    Forster (Hart)
Valencia - Trippier - Cedric (Lascelles, Hudson)
Ince - Zaha - Pogba (not sure) - KDB (RLC)
    Morata - Kane - Austin

Too big a risk to go into the season without Lukaku, eh?

Did a test run of the draft format earlier today with two mates. First impressions are good:

    - the user interface is pretty simple and easy to handle
    - no glitches
    - the fast and furious pace of setting to 30s picks is great tension and it took us less than ten mins to compile our squads
    - lastly...at present, there are less than a dozen fit 'premium' forwards/mids that you'd want to prioritise in your squad..therefore leagues with 3,4 or 6 teams IMO will offer the best balance for each team.
    - picking 2nd in a 3-way draft sucks.. as both your opponents get back to back shots throughout!

    Current Premium watch list order:

    Kane
    Lukaku
    Alli
    Aguero
    De Bruyne
    Eriksen
    Sanchez
    Jesus
    Lacazette
    Coutinho
    Morata

My anal tips for setting up a watch list:
    - no need to watch more than the 'total number of player slots in each position' multiplied by the 'number of managers'... i.e I'm watching 9x forwards, 15x mids, 15x defenders and 6x goalkeepers.
    - Start by bringing in the forwards. Sort them into order of preference.
    - then being in mids. View just the mids in your watchlist and sort into order. Then view all players and sort again (it's easier if you've sorted the order for each position first, believe me!)
    - then repeat for defenders and goalies
    🙂

Finally... bit of an obvious one....during the draft, if you end up last to pick in any particular position- leave it to the end and prioritise players from other positions first!

Aguero is nailed at start of season. As soon as rotation kicks in we can transfer out

Aguero for sure... If he had gone to chelsea for example he would be in 90% of teams. But at city with Pep it's not the same, hence he is 11.5

Mikhi would be my Man U attacking player

So with the number of premium forwards out there, how many blanks in a row would the likes of Lukaku and Kane need at the start of the season for you to drop them?
