Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Pre-Season

A loss for Chelsea, mayhem for Spurs and wins for Brighton and Burnley as the pre-season warm-ups return.

Stoke City are dulled by the Blades, however, despite the best efforts of Xherdan Shaqiri.

Here are the notes from Tuesday’s action…

Chelsea 2 Bayern Munich 3

Goals from Marcos Alonso and Michy Batshuayi took some of the sting out of a first pre-season loss for Chelsea as new striker Alvaro Morata made his debut.

The Spaniard claimed the assist for Batshuayi’s goal, flicking on a Cesc Fabregas corner, as the Blues belatedly recovered from being three down just before the break.

In an otherwise poor defensive display from the champions, Alonso’s goal, set up by Victor Moses, would have at least been heartening for the 13.9% of Fantasy Premier League managers with a chunky 7.0 tied up in the defender.

If the Spaniard is to deliver on his premium price this season, he’ll need to come close to replicating last year’s stellar campaign that harvested six goals, provided five assists and kept 15 clean sheets.

His performance against Bayern hinted at exactly that, although there were some uncharacteristic frailties on display at the back, with Thibaut Courtois and Cesar Azpilicueta particularly unconvincing as the Germans took control of the match.

Chelsea will not face many teams as potent as Bayern, however.

Young attacker Jeremie Boga again stood in for Pedro as he recovers from his almighty collision with Arsenal’s David Ospina, while Andreas Christensen played for just over an hour at the heart of Chelsea’s frequently troubled defence.

After breezing past the Gunners, this was a major reality check for Chelsea, with the 11.1%-owned Morata’s assist one of the few positives to emerge.

Chelsea XI: Courtois (Eduardo 74); Azpilicueta, Christensen (Luiz 63), Cahill; Moses, Kante, Fabregas (Pasalic 86), Alonso (Tomori 74); Willian, Batshuayi (Baker 86), Boga (Morata 63).
Subs not used: Caballero, Bulka, Kalas, Clarke-Salter, Scott, Remy.

Tottenham Hotspur 2 Roma 3

Another day, another high-scoring match for Spurs, but this time they were on the wrong end of a five-goal thriller won at the death by rivals Roma.

Late strikes from Harry Winks, from a Vincent Janssen rebound, and then Janssen himself, who swept home a Georges-Kevin Nkoudou cross, brought Spurs back from a two-goal deficit.

But the Italians had the last laugh in a match most notable for a wretched refereeing display from Hilario Grajeda.

The American official gave Roma a contentious penalty, denied Spurs what looked like a clear spot-kick of their own, watched a mini-brawl break out among the players and then tried, and completely failed, to send off Spurs coach Miguel D’Agostino.

Other than that, he had a great night.

Mauricio Pochettino mixed and matched, using three at the back in the first-half and a flat back four after the break, with key players such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld given the full 90 minutes. Youngster Josh Onomah was utilised in a central support role.

But the club’s lack of activity in the transfer market – chairman Daniel Levy going public with his belief that rivals’ spending is ‘unsustainable’ – and worries over the effect playing home matches at Wembley will have on the side have combined to dampen interest in Spurs stars.

Alli (38.0%) and Kane (34.1%) are highly popular FPL choices, but just four other team-mates make it into double figures for ownership.

By contrast, Chelsea have eight assets owned by at least 10% of FPL managers, with two injured players – Pedro and Eden Hazard – likely to join them once fit.

Spurs XI First half: Vorm; Carter-Vickers, Alderweireld, Vertonghen; Trippier, Dier, Dembele, Walker-Peters; Onomah, Alli; Kane.

Spurs XI Second half: Lloris; Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies; Winks, Dembele; Eriksen, Alli, Georgiou; Kane.

Southend 0 Brighton and Hove Albion 3

Solly March made it three goals in two matches for Brighton as Chris Hughton’s men again gave lower league opposition short shrift.

The midfielder scored twice, and veteran striker Glenn Murray added a third, while new Chelsea loan signing Izzy Brown was thrown straight into the side and earned post-match praise from his boss for his versatility.

“Izzy can play on either flank, but we know he can play off the front as well. Eventually, he could play as a number nine, but I don’t see him as a nine, I see him as one that is going to play off a front man or in a wide area.”

Assists came from Liam Rosenior, Markus Suttner and Murray.

Hughton chose to rest a number of first-teamers ahead of another pre-season run-out, on Saturday, against Norwich City.

It’s also worth noting that centre-back Uwe Huenemeier – priced at 4.0 in FPL and owned by 8.4% – played the full 90 minutes alongside Lewis Dunk in the heart of defence.

Brighton XI: Maenpaa; Rosenior (Cox 63), Huenemeier, Dunk (Tilley 82), Suttner (White 63); March (Molumby 82), Sidwell (LuaLua 63), Stephens (Dallison 82), Brown (Ince 63); Gross (Towell 82); Murray (Connelly 71).

Preston North End 1 Burnley 2

Robbie Brady was at the heart of Burnley’s win over Lancashire rivals Preston, with the goals coming from Jonathan Walters and Sam Vokes.

The Irish midfielder’s set-piece skills were a threat throughout.

His free-kick found Tom Anderson, who headed across goal for Walters to score, before the fit-again Vokes hit the winner, applying the slightest of touches to a Kevin Long header, again from a Brady dead-ball delivery.

Manager Sean Dyche’s latest buy, the experienced full-back Phil Bardsley, took no part in the match, but most of the Clarets’ first-team squad gained more valuable pitch-time.

Walters now has two goals and an assist since joining the club, while the productive Brady has returned a goal and assist.

But FPL interest in Burnley players remains low in light of the club’s tough start to the season – they travel to Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and Everton over the first seven Gameweeks – and only Tom Heaton and Ben Mee enjoy notable ownership.

Burnley XI: Heaton (Pope, 46); Lowton (C Long 81), Taylor (Ward 71), Anderson, K Long (Mee 64); Brady (Barnes 71), Gudmundsson (Ulvestad 75), Westwood (Defour 64), Cork (Hendrick 64); Walters (Agyei 81), Vokes (Gray 81).

Sheffield United 2 Stoke City 1

Xherdan Shaqiri was on the scoresheet for Stoke City as Kurt Zouma’s debut for the club ended in defeat.

The Swiss international combined with Ramadan Sobhi to level for the Potters before a late goal gave the hosts the win.

Chelsea loanee Zouma played the first half alongside Ryan Shawcross at the centre of the Stoke defence, but it was Shaqiri who caught the eye as he looks to take on more attacking responsibility following the sale of Marko Arnautovic to West Ham.

Elsewhere, defender Geoff Cameron was used in midfield for the first half, allowing Joe Allen to play in a more attacking role, before Hughes shuffled his pack after the break.

It should also be noted that Bardsley’s departure to Burnley seemingly cements Glen Johnson’s start at right-back or right wing-back; like Cameron, he is available as a 4.5 Stoke defender in FPL.

Stoke City XI: Grant; Johnson (Edwards 69), Pieters (Tymon 69) Shawcross (Muniesa 80), Zouma (Crouch 46); Fletcher (Adam 80) Cameron (Wollscheid 80); Shaqiri (Diouf 73), Allen (Imbula 80), Ramadan; Berahino (Bojan 73).

I have a feeling a lot of JayRod owners will be trying to find 1mil to upgrade. I'm in the process of doing it.
Even if he's useless over the early gameweeks you can easily downgrade compared to a 6mil of 6.5mil forward where you have to be watching early price rises of other strikers in that bracket.

Would probably have got him at 8.0. Think 7 could be a steal. WHA fixtures not too bad either.

Is Moratta a better pick than Jesus?

    - Surely Moratta is guaranteed more game time.
    - Is the main man
    - In a team that will create plenty
    - Is .5 cheaper

Don't you worry about minutes played tho? Surely logic says, Aguero will also feature? Where Moratta should be guaranteed starts and 60+ minutes every game.

That City attack is a minefield for FPL

So to get Kane I can now go Firmino to Hernandez and Cedric to Dunk. So which do you prefer?

    a) Kane, Hernandez, Dunk.
    b) Jesus, Firmino, Cedric.

Already have Alli (spurs cover) and Coutinho (pool cover) but no City.

Think the Saints striker to start is a good idea, just need to work out which one they're going to start.

Hi mate, please rate my team:

    De Gea,
Alonso, Trippier, Cedric Eriksen, Sane, Willian, T Carroll
    Kane, Lukaku (c), Chicarito

    (Elliott, RLC, Rangel, Hunemeier)

Still not sure of Alonso, T Caroll as 4 mid, Chicarito and bench is very week.

Before this: Monreal, Milivojevic ang Gayle

    Any advice? Thx you.

Chelsea defenders = overpriced except Alonso - not nailed with Sandro.

1.) Chicarito any day over Austin
2.) Overpriced? Returns mate, Returns. David Luiz 6 is far from over priced. Plus defenders are the new midfielders in FPL
3.) Eriksen is not greater than Alli ! Thats Blasphemy

            1) Chicarito has poor fixtures.. Austins goal record is brilliant
            2) Good points but bad value for money, Luiz - 4.0 Ppm last year - Bertrand - 4.4 PPG (0.5 cheaper and better fixtures)

1st time poster long time lurker, thought I might try something different with my team this year and have flexible defence and attack.

    Foster/Elliot

    Tripper, Walker, Alonso, Cedric, 4m

    Mikhitaryan, Alli, Willian, Sane, RLC

    Lukaku, Chichartio, Rooney

GIves me the opportunity to either play 3 or 4 at the back and play 2 or 3 upfront.

ALso considering dropping Sane for Ramsey and upgrading 4m defender to Daniels.

Question: is anybody else actually really struggling with nailing down 4 mids that they're fully settled on? To me there seems to be question marks over almost every popular midfield option, and it's causing a headache:

(These are just my observations, so feel free to enlighten me if you disagree!)

KDB: obviously a great player, but will he play 100% of the time? Will he play too deep? Will he deliver consistent points, even surrounded by so much attacking threat that could potentially share the points with him? In short, is he worth his price?

Sanchez: obviously one of the best mids in the league, but 12m? Really tough to incorporate him in with all the striker options. This is all if he's even still in the premier league come the start of the season.

Coutinho/mane/salah: all top notch players who have the potential to deliver, but my gut tells me last season may repeat itself and the Liverpool midfield lottery headache will continue all season again. Tough choice either way but I never feel 100% settled with who I'm currently going with here.

Ramsay: perfect cheap option into a really enticing arsenal attack, but will he play too deep and suffer points wise? Will he be nailed? Will he stay fit?

Sane: again, great price for a city mid, who put up some decent points last year, but is he nailed on? Will this continue? Not overly impressed by his underlying stats, and there's just so many players in that squad capable of stealing the attacking spoils from him.

Pogba: 8m is very kind in my opinion. Arguably one of the most nailed players in the team and some really promising stats. But it really hinges on United signing a defensive mid to release his potential. A big question mark for me at the moment.

Willian: great price, so promising, but will his position be secure for as long as we think? Short term pick of course, but how short will it actually be?

Tadic/Redmond: the fixtures. Man, those fixtures just look amazing. But last season wasn't great for either of them, and I think is fair to say we expected more from them (especially tadic!). Will they have better fortune this year? Or will get suckered in by the fixtures only to be left disappointed and kicking ourselves for not learning our lesson from last year?

Alli/eriksen: great seasons last year, and obviously great players, but for some reason (considering many teams, mine included, will have Kane and given the number of great attacking teams this year) two spurs just feels like too much? Will their investment be better spent on another team to cover as many bases as possible?

Zaha: was genuinely impressed with this guy last season. In my opinion, palaces best player by far last year. And at 5.5m (if I remember?) he was an absolutely great pick. But 7m pushes him into the mid price bracket, and somehow this throws doubt over his value in my view. Can he really deliver the siggy level of points from last year? Possibly, but again, not 100% settled on the idea yet.

Phillips: decent price if you ask me, and had a great set of stats last season when in form. But he did also go through a horrendous dry patch, much to the frustration of many on here. Will he stay fit? Will he be nailed? Plus, it's West Brom, not exactly anything to scream about!

Apologies for the essay, thoughts would be appreciated!

      For me,

      1) Pick a Liverpool and stick with him (Cout/Mané/Salah)
      2) Willian is good for the first 5 GWS anyway, shouldn't be planning any further - he's in.
      3) Eriksen/Alli - having Kane doesn't affect their points, good short term atleast.

This sums up the reasons for my huge spending on defence until a few decent options present themselves.

In midfield I have gone for Alli (no Kane), Willian (short term pick, Zaha (better value than Benteke), Phillips (really good value going by ppg) & Carroll.

Zaha - will he be a flair player who looks good but doesn't bring in the points? (Just a thought)

Phillips - WBA getting worse by the day? And didn't his PPG decrease near the end/he's coming back from injury (?)

Both could be gems, just a lot of question marks

I'm on Alli, Pogba, Zaha and Redmond (Carrol) at the moment, Probably one of Pogba, Zaha and Redmond gets transfered out after the first two rounds. All of them have decent potential and fixtures so I'll be awaiting data. Same goes with regards to my third striker (Ronney in the moment but have been swapping between him and King). Hopefully Deeney, Gayle, Austin, Gabbi og Chicharito steps up during the first two rounds which will enable me to invest the liberated funds elsewhere. If not it means my starting 11 was better than the alternative. I've convinced my self it's a win win :o)

I've come to the same conclusion this morning! There seems to be many great options in attack, at a range of prices from 6.5-12.5m. Likewise in defence, I'm spoilt for choice here. So my solution has been to try out a 4-3-3. This immediately reduces the problem in midfield from 4 players to 3.

      My thoughts are:

KDB - being considered, but not in my team at present. Will be keeping a close eye on city pre season for clues. One advantage of owning him though is you can downgrade from him to almost anyone.

Sanchez - Too expensive, and too unsure of his future. He also played a summer tournament for the FORTH year in a row, potential fatigue issues? I'm ignoring him.

Liverpool - I share your worries, hence I might ease the pain slightly by going for the cheapest option who isn't a midfielder at all - Firmino at third striker. They are a fixture proof team though so could be treated as a "fire and forget" option. I feel you need one of them to cover explosive hauls, they are a team well capable of scoring 4 or more goals on any occasion.

Ramsey - Like KDB, another to be watched closely in p[re season. He does seem to get forward well in the 3-4-3 formation though. Fortunately Arsenal are playing in the charity shield this year so this should give us a good look at him in a reasonably competative match against a strong opponent. Arsenal may well go all in on the league this season, in which case, they could be less flaky than recent years. Big If, though!

Sane - Started 16 out of final 17 matches for city last season, and no players have been signed in his position (yet), so that makes him nailed for me. At 8.5 he is the cheapest route into the city attack aswell, he's in my team.

Pogba - a potential breakout star of this season, especially at 8.0m. However, I won't be touching him unless Utd sign a defensive midfielder.

Willian - At 7.0m, and a proven FPL asset playing for the champions, too attractive to ignore. We can always transfer him out when Hazard returns, thats what transfers are for, sometimes in pre season its easy to forget we aren't picking our GW1 teams for the whole season!

Tadic/Redmond - As you say, great fixtures. But such streaky players. I think I'm going to avoid initially, but if they light it up GW1, they can easily be bought in by downgrading one of the 7.0 mids.

Alli/Erik - Fantastic options. I'm only avoiding them as i have Kane, and am trying to cover as many of the top 6 as i can at first, before patterns emerge. There's also a question mark about Wembley.

Zaha - If he's playing OOP at striker in a 3-5-2, i think he's too good to ignore. Nice opening fixtures too. Its always difficult to know quite how good mid table sides can be when they change manager though. Possibly worth a punt for that attractive opening fixture though? Again, at his price point he can be easily transferred out to another 7.0 option.

Phillips - As i'm playing 4-3-3, he's not on my radar. in my opnion he's the best of the 6.0 options though.

So to summarise, I've gone with Sane, Willian, and either Ramsey or Zaha (not decided yet), to complete my front 6:

      Sane Willian Ramsey/Zaha

      Kane Lukaku Firmino

Why does everyone assume a United defensive mid is going to unleash Pogba? He'll still be in the double pivot when we play 4-2-3-1 at home. Might help him in the UCL but minimal impact in the Prem.

I believe I have managed to find a decent balance in a 3-5-2.

      I'm going with:
      Bailly Alonso Trippier
      Puncheon Alli Sane Willian Lingard
      Lukaku Aguero

      Myhill/ Daniels Dunk Fletcher

This set-up allows me to switch to a 4-4-2 with Daniels/Puncheon rotating.

The 'midfield minefield' is a headache, but I believe Lingard is offering very good value at just 6.0m, and Jose seems to be favouring him in pre-season.

      1. Judders

Id have Philips over Lingard. Far more nailed. Lingard has to compete with Rashford Mata Mhiky Martial and possibly Perisic coming in. Philips looks a much safer bet.

I was on Coutinho until all the Barca speculation and have reverted back to Willan (no brainer) Zaha (great fixtures, FDB building team around him) Redmond or Tadic (got to punt on one of them with three home games in four)

This allows me DDG in goal, Bertrand, Daniels, Dawson & Tripper but best of all shock and awe front three of Kane Lukaku & Aguero

Will then re-assess GW 5 and probably WC once I know the Liverpool situation better.

I agree with every single point you make but that is exactly why we play this game. If none of those concerns existed, the pricing would reflect what is to be expected and all (us) managers would differentiate by chance. Now, we have to find an answer to all your questions. Who finds them will conquer...

I currently have Alli, Coutinho, Willian and Sane and wouldn't say any of them are nailed in my team. I think Alli/Eriksen and Coutinho (if he stays) provide great value. Liverpool mids are a lottery for now anyway and you just need to pick one and stick with him. Willian is good value for 'safe' Chelsea coverage despite fairly hard fixtures. As far as City goes, I'm not comfortable picking any of the players, so I picked the cheapest one. Depends entirely on how they do in pre-season before I decide who to pick.

Couldn't the same exercise of finding doubts be performed for forwards?

There are four undeniable talismen in FPL, two mids, two fwds:
      Kane, Lukaku, Sanchez, Hazard

With the two midfielders uncertain picks for the start of the season, there might be a knock-on effect psychologically whereby one starts to question whether Alli or Eriksen or KDB can lead the line for an FPL midfield, but the same could be said if Kane and Lukaku were removed from the equation for forwards.

Aguero and Jesus - who gets the points?
      Lacazette - can he settle?
      Morata - same as Laca
Costa - don't let the door hit you on the way out
Firmino - if he keeps removing his shirts after his goals, now they'll only be worth an assist

There are certainly doubts over many of the players you listed, but I don't see why Alli, Eriksen, Coutinho, KDB should be among them -- they have it all except for the pedigree of being a talisman, and are certainly as strong as the above group of forwards, imo.

Right now I'm fairly settled on Kane, Lukaku and Chicharito as my front three (pending any developments to come)

Kane and lukaku I see as the safest options as they possess three crucial attributes I look for in a striker: ownership, nailedness (both the talisman strikers at their clubs) and premier league pedigree.

Aguero, Jesus, lacazette and morata (the only other 4 players I would consider in the same bracket as lukaku and Kane) all have at least one of those three crucial elements missing. I guess my point really comes down to the fact that I just can't seem to apply the same logic in the midfield.

Yup, this is the main reason why i'm going 4-3-3.

I've currently got Mkhitaryan, Ramsey, William, Redmond (Carroll)

I've gone heavy up front with Jesus, Kane, Laz.

I'm gonna wait and see what happens, downgrade the attack if I need to upgrade the midfield.

Totally agree. That's why I was set on three big hitters up top - kane, kaku, jesus.

But then they massively underpriced Hernandez and it's messing with my head

you can do this with every player in the game, even Kane and Lukaku can be questioned if you really want to.

      I am currently on:

      Alli | Salah | Willan | Zaha
      Kane | Lukaku | Austin

Alli - can't decide if Eriksen is better for BPS and potentially assists. But bot good value at 9.5

Salah - attacking front three. Courts could be far back. Mark has him

Zaha - Manager has already said how important he is. Good fixtures. Can move to someone else like Ramsey or Redmond/Phillips

Willian - no brainer at this price

I personally think Sane is a bit overpriced at 8.5

Yes, massively. That's part of the reason why I'm starting with a top-heavy 4-3-3 to begin with - to mitigate the problem. Tempted to even for 5-2-3, though I feel that might be a step too far.

this is why im currently on a 5-3-2

i have kane but still think alli/eriksen are such good value

      willian no brainer

and then ive gone coutinho, he's so good to watch.

      Forster
      Alonso Trippier Cedric Daniels Dawson
      Alli Cout Willian
      Kane Lukaku

      Great read.

I'm currently at KDB, Alli, Willian, Phillips. Feels like a good balance of heavy hitters and potential value.

Isn't this another clear reason for selecting Alonso in a 433 in lieu of a mid ?

Does anyone know whether you can start fpl draft scoring from a given gameweek? In other words can we start a league during the first intl break or does it have to start before gw1?

I don't think it's possible to set it up to start in particular GW but as mentioned you can start a league any given week.

Very good team. In my opinion, you'd be better off getting someone slightly cheaper than Mendy and using the extra cash to strengthen Humemeier so you have 5 playing defenders.

        THE PANGENGERS -

He has agreed terms with barca meaning he has agreed his wages if he wants to go. Liverpool and Barca haven't worked out a price and if they don't agree he won't go. All he has done is agree how much he is being payed IF he goes
